Tese apresentada à Universidade de Wolverhampton para obtenção do grau de Doutor em Filosofia, orientada por Les Worrall; There is a vast literature on business strategy and organisational performance particularly within an American context. However, little attention has been given to the development of a more complete, integrated and holistic view of the inter-relationships between business strategy, the dynamics of strategy and organisational performance: this is the key aim of this thesis. The current research, attempts, based on Miles and Snow’s (1978) strategic typology, to understand the process of business strategy development and the overall implications on organisational performance in the context of the Portuguese mould industry. The purpose is to: • Test the applicability of Miles and Snow’s strategic typology to the Portuguese mould manufacturing industry, using a series of cross-sectional studies covering the period from 1980 to 1997 in five tranches. • Test the dynamics of Miles and Snow’s strategy types, using longitudinal analysis specifically to explore how business strategy has evolved over the years in response to environmental changes (from 1980 until 1997). • Test the overall implications of the static and the dynamic viewpoint of Miles and Snow’s strategy types on organisational performance. Data was collected using a variety of methods including in-depth...

As duas dimensões...

The rapid and continuous pace of technological change is a major challenge for all managers, who are often faced with innovations’ adoption decisions affecting the future of their companies. This is a fundamental issue on strategy, if we see strategy as a set of actions to make critical choices between two or more alternatives, in order to achieve competitive advantages or to respond to competitors. Strategy‐minded leaders try to predict the value that they will create with their choices in the organization. However, formulating strategy is a difficult task, due to the high level of uncertainty hampering the anticipation of future trends. An even harder work is the implementation of strategy, due to its interdependent relationship with strategy formulation, which is materialized in the organizational structure dedicated to fulfil the organization goals. In this work we propose to look at the factors that strategy‐minded leaders perceive that influence the adoption of innovations and we explore their relationships within several academic fields, of study, namely strategic management, organization theory, organization behaviour and organization development, adopting an holistic perspective that will allow for a better understanding of strategic adoption decisions. This analysis is grounded on field work that involved the collection of primary data from different enterprises. The research was based on a quantitative approach and on an intentional non‐probabilistic sampling strategy. The sample includes thirty four Portuguese firms...

Innovation and internationalization, along with strategy formulation, due to their relationship of mutual interdependence, are widely referred to as decisive factors for the sustainable growth of SMEs. In this article we aim to study the relationships between strategy, innovation and internationalization and its effects on business competitiveness, filling a gap in terms of the knowledge concerning these interactions, which is diffuse or inconclusive. Failure rates related to strategy, innovation and internationalization are high, with correspondingly high costs for companies, and we postulate that they are linked to aspects of implementation. As companies enter or consider each one of these dimensions of the business, they will incur in increasing costs if there is a poor implementation of strategy, innovation and internationalization. However, despite their importance, many SMEs do not have structured processes of strategy, innovation and internationalization. This may be particularly true in micro, entrepreneurial enterprises, which are the subject of this study. The determination of the causes and determinants, as well as the tools that companies use in designing their processes of formulation and implementation of strategy, innovation and internationalization...

Master in Business Administration / JEL Classification System: M10 and M19; Strategy as practice is an emergent view in strategy research that focuses on the practical things of strategy, that is, the practitioners, the practices and the praxis. In this perspective, strategy tools such as SWOT Analysis, Scenario Analysis or Balanced Scorecard are strategic practices around which strategic activities take place. This dissertation departs from a practice perspective to examine the use of strategy tools in the largest companies in Portugal. The main goal is to find the most popular strategy tools and to describe their use in companies. This is relevant since it is reported in the literature that companies invest vast resources to acquire and implement these tools. Moreover, strategy tools are important vehicles to turn theories actionable in practice. It was adopted a mixed method research that comprises the utilisation of two data collection techniques. Firstly, a questionnaire was applied to obtain a broad overview about the use of strategy tools. Secondly, seven interviews were done in different companies to better understand the questionnaire results and to get more detailed information about strategy tools’ use. In terms of results...

The paper aims to identify the similarities and differences in the emphases and patterns that military and civilian managers attribute to strategy. Two different analysis methods were employed in order to achieve abovementioned research objective. In the first method, the aim was to reveal and compare strategy understanding of the sample groups. Towards that end, ten different strategy definitions and nine different necessity statements compiled from various definitions/statements in the existing strategic management literature were provided to the samples. Then, the samples were requested to consider how strategy and necessity of strategy is formed in their minds, and then to choose top three definitions out of 9/10, and finally rank them in preference order, from one to three. Lastly, we counted the ranks/perceived importance of the various strategy definitions and necessity statements that which statement is ranked to which place. Using mean rank assessment by nonparametric comparison method the study shows differences between military and civilian managers in following aspect: the comparison of the emphases that are attributed to approach to strategy identified significant differences among business and military managers. This is the third of a series of papers addressing the problem of service quality strategy implementation. The first paper focuses on service quality as a function of quality gaps and proposes a comprehensive model that amplifies the areas where to look for service quality gaps (Cândido & Morris, 2000). The second paper focuses on strategy implementation and proposes three interrelated models: a static model of the organisation; a dynamic model of the strategy process; and a mixed model, which integrates static and dynamic models (Cândido & Morris, 2001). Taken together, the four models can help to implement a service quality strategy that simultaneously avoids quality gaps and resistance to change. Now, this paper undertakes a tentative validation of the models. Sample data has been collected through two complementary questionnaires, both implemented in the population of four and five star hotels of the Algarve (FFSHA). Data analysis involves descriptive statistics and statistical tests. In general, the descriptives and the statistical tests do not provide evidence against the models thus supporting their validity. Descriptives have also raised concerns about some possible inconsistent management practices during the implementation of a quality strategy. The paper concludes with insights to managers interested in implementing such a strategy.

The role of middle management is essential when managing integrative and emergent strategy formation processes. We stand out the importance of its role connecting micro and macro organizational level offering a very important contribution when examining the strategy-as-practice perspective and integrative strategy formation process. The main goal of this research is to analyse the relationship between the integrative strategy formation process and the roles of middle management under the strategy-as-practice perspective. To check it out we adopted a qualitative methodology droving a case analysis in a Spanish University. Data was collected by means of personal interviews with members of different levels of the Institution, documents analysis and direct observation. In advance of some results we find out that the University develops an integrative strategy formation process and confers to middle management an important role extended all over the organization.

Provides an analysis of President Bush's new national security strategy first unveiled in Aspen, Colorado on August 2, 1990, involving a mix of active, reserve, and reconstitutable forces, and General Colin Powell's "base" force. If implemented, the new strategy and force structure would return a significant amount of U.S. ground and air forces to the continental U.S. where most would be demobilized. In the event of a major crisis, the U.S. would rely on active and reserve forces for a contingency response much the same as has been done for Operation DESERT SHIELD. The new strategy is based upon a revised Soviet threat and new international security environment which allows us to assume two years warning of a major ground war in Europe. During this two year period, the U.S. would reconstitute additional military capability. Outline of all sources of new strategy and force structure, the "base" force, transportation requirements, and whether or not the U.S. will retain a unilateral capability for overseas Intervention. Discussion of parallel NATO initiatives. Discussion of major issues resulting from this new proposed strategy and force structure, including: is the new strategy real, defining new goals and objectives in both programming and war planning...

In 1992, following a decade of negative publicity and a series of public inquiries into mental health services, the Australian Federal, State and Territory Governments adopted a National Mental Health Policy. This policy, through a series of five year National Mental Health Plans (NMHPlans), became known as the National Mental Health Strategy (NMHS). The aims of the National Strategy were, and still are, to develop a framework of mental health care services which promotes mental health; prevents mental illness where possible; reduces the burden of mental illness on sufferers, carers and the general community; and treats persons with a mental illness in a way which satisfies the United Nation' s Principles for the Protection of Persons with Mental fllness and the Improvement of Mental Health Care. Upon release, this policy was widely acclaimed and considered an international benchmark. Now, more than a decade later, a recent review by the Canadian Senate, several evaluations of the Strategy, and a widespread review of the mental health sector show this opinion is still supported. However, in the case of mental health care in Australia, it is apparent that world class policy does not necessarily equate to world class outcomes. Despite increased investment...

32 pages, 2 figures.-- JEL Classification Number: D71.; A social choice function is group strategy-proof on a domain if no group of agents can manipulate its final outcome to their own benefit by declaring false preferences on that domain. Group strategy-proofness is a very attractive requirement of incentive compatibility. But in many cases it is hard or impossible to find nontrivial social choice functions satisfying even the weakest condition of individual strategy-proofness. However, there are a number of economically significant domains where interesting rules satisfying individual strategy-proofness can be defined, and for some of them, all these rules turn out to also satisfy the stronger requirement of group strategy-proofness. This is the case, for example, when preferences are single-peaked or single-dipped. In other cases, this equivalence does not hold. We provide sufficient conditions defining domains of preferences guaranteeing that individual and group strategy-proofness are equivalent for all rules defined on these domains. Our results extend to intermediate versions of strategy-proofness, defined to exclude manipulations by small group of agents. They also provide guidelines on how to restrict the ranges of functions defined on domains that only satisfy our condition partially. Finally...
