Master’s thesis Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historical Constructions; This thesis addresses the study of the stability of Saint George of the Latins church, which is located in Famagusta (Cyprus), under self-weight and seismic loading. In the first part of the work, the state of the art is presented, including brief review on Famagusta history, its seismicity and the inspection and diagnosis works carried out on the church. The limit analysis of collapse mechanisms, both force based and displacement based, was used for a first safety assessment. After that, a numerical model was prepared using finite elements and it was updated using the dynamic identification results. The updated model was subjected to non-linear static (pushover) analysis in different directions (global and principal) using two lateral load patterns: proportional to the mass and proportional to the mode shape of the structure in the applicable direction. The results of the pushover analyses were compared with the limit analysis results. As final step, non-linear dynamic analyses with time integration were carried out and the dynamic behavior of the structure was compared with the results of limit analysis and pushover analysis. By analyzing simplified collapse mechanisms (2D)...

This work addresses the seismic safety of the remainings of one church in Famagusta (Cyprus), including also a historical survey, inspection and diagnosis. The seismic safety is studied in detail, using limit analysis of collapse mechanisms as preliminary safety assessment. Then, a finite element model was prepared and updated using dynamic identification results. The updated model was subjected to non-linear static (pushover) analysis in different directions (global and principal) using two lateral load patterns: proportional to the mass and proportional to the modal shapes of the structure. Finally, a time history analysis is also performed. The results allow to conclude that: (a) limit analysis of collapse mechanism can be adequately employed for the seismic assessment of masonry ruins, as they provide comparable results to more sophisticated analysis; (b) load patterns proportional to the mode shapes in pushover analysis of complex masonry structures should be carefully considered, as they can provide too conservative results; (c) the ruins of the church exhibit a low seismic safety.

Australia confederated : a lecture delivered in the Town Hall, Adelaide / by J. Jefferis ; with speeches on the occasion by...W.F.D. Jervois...[et al]; The Rev. James Jefferis was pastor of the North Adelaide Congregational Church from 1859-77 and a keen promoter of secular education in South Australia, being influential in the founding of Union College and the University of Adelaide and a foundation member of the Council of the University. In 1877 he had accepted an invitation to become pastor of the Pitt St. Congregational Church in Sydney, where he was similarly active in promoting education and 'common Christianity'. His contribution to the federation debate, begun in the 1870s in a series of articles in the Adelaide Advertiser, were based on his conviction that 'Australia was destined to be a new and nobler nation spreading Christianity, civilization and liberty throughout the southern seas'. In this lecture, though he began with reservations as to the appropriateness of his comments in view of what he called the 'secularization' of politics, he urged the importance of the issue to all citizens and strongly supported the need for union among the colonies. In examining the form union might take he discussed the Canadian Dominion model and argued in favour of federal union rather than Henry Parkes's 1879 proposal of a legislative union...
