Linear hierarchies, the classical pecking-order structures, are formed readily in both nature and the laboratory in a great range of species including humans. However, the probability of getting linear structures by chance alone is quite low. In this paper we investigate the two hypotheses that are proposed most often to explain linear hierarchies: they are predetermined by differences in the attributes of animals, or they are produced by the dynamics of social interaction, i.e., they are self-organizing. We evaluate these hypotheses using cichlid fish as model animals, and although differences in attributes play a significant part, we find that social interaction is necessary for high proportions of groups with linear hierarchies. Our results suggest that dominance hierarchy formation is a much richer and more complex phenomenon than previously thought, and we explore the implications of these results for evolutionary biology, the social sciences, and the use of animal models in understanding human social organization.

Meeting human needs while sustaining ecosystems and the benefits they provide is a global challenge. Coastal marine systems present a particularly important case, given that >50% of the world’s population lives within 100 km of the coast and fisheries are the primary source of protein for >1 billion people worldwide. Our integrative analysis here yields an understanding of the sustainability of coupled social-ecological systems that is quite distinct from that provided by either the biophysical or the social sciences alone and that illustrates the feasibility and value of operationalizing the social-ecological systems framework for comparative analyses of coupled systems, particularly in data-poor and developing nation settings.

This dissertation investigates the practice of leadership in collaboratively designed and funded research in a university setting. More specifically, this research explores the meaning of leadership as experienced by researchers who were, or still are, engaged on Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) funded collaborative research projects in a university setting. This qualitative study (Gay & Airasian, 2003) is situated within a social constructivist paradigm (Kezar, Carducci, & Contreras-McGavin, 2006) and involves an analysis of the responses from 12 researchers who answered 11questions related to my overarching research question: What is the impact of leadership on university based collaborative research projects funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council based on the experiences of researchers involved? The data that emerged supported and enhanced the existing literature related to leadership and collaborative groups in academia. The type of preferred leadership that emerged as a result of this research seemed to indicate that the type of leader that appeared to be optimal in this context might be described as a functional collaborative expert.

This collection of papers addresses the issue of ‘objective vs. subjective’ knowledge in the social sciences and humanities: how we may get ‘objective’ knowledge out of ‘subjective’ perceptions; how ‘induction’ and ‘deduction’ should interact; how we can make policies or legal recommendations based on ‘objective knowledge’; how social agents’ knowledge should be modelled. Drawing on the structure of the conference, the papers are organized in sections which address a set of interrelated questions, against a common thematic background provided by Popper’s contribution on objective knowledge in the social sciences and humanities: the ‘induction problem’ and the accumulation of ‘subjective’ knowledge out of ‘objective’ knowledge; ‘objectivity’ of the law and of social policies; objectivity of facts and causal relations in the social sciences and humanities; the objective/subjective rationality of social agents.; Foreword Ramon Marimon 1 Introduction Chiara Valentini 3 Section I From ‘Subjective’ To ‘Objective Knowledge’: The ‘Induction Problem’ Revisited Simon Blackburn: Popper and His Successors 9 Carol Cleland: Common Cause Explanation and the Asymmetry of Overdetermination 17 Section II Objectivity of The Law and of Social Policies Gerald Postema: Hayek and Popper on the Evolution of Rules and Mind 33 Section III Objectivity of Facts and Causal Relations in the Social Sciences and Humanities Harry Collins: Demarcation Criteria and Elective Modernism 55 Justin Cruikshank: The Importance of Nominal Problems 61 Section IV Modeling Individual and Social Agents as Objective/Subjective ‘Rational’ Agents’ Frédéric Vandenberghe: Falsification Falsified. The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument to measure high school students’ perspectives on global awareness and attitudes toward social issues. The research questions that guided this study were: (a) Can acceptable validity and reliability estimates be established for an instrument developed to measure high schools students' global awareness? (b) Can acceptable validity and reliability estimates be established for an instrument developed to measure high schools students' attitudes towards global social issues? (c) What is the relationship between high school students’ GPA, race/ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status, parents’ education, getting the news, reading and listening habits, the number of classes taken in the social sciences, whether they speak a second language, and have experienced living in or visiting other countries, and their perception of global awareness and attitudes toward global social issues. ^ An ex post facto research design was used and the data were collected using a 4-part Likert-type survey. It was administered to 14 schools in the Miami-Dade County, Florida area to 704 students. A factor analysis with an orthogonal varimax rotation was vii used to select the factors that best represented the three constructs – global education...

This dissertation analyses the genesis of environmental studies in the Brazilian social sciences from the 1970's to the 1990's. The author argues that the social conditions of the emergence of the environmental social sciences production are linked to specific state of the social sciences field's history in the 1980's and the formation of the environmental market in the Brazilian social space. The intermediation of the agents and institutions linked to social sciences produced the favourable conditions for the genesis of a scientific production according to the rules of field and towards the emergent environmental market. Starting from the discussion about the nature of Social Sciences and its relationships with Education, this work defends that it is indispensable that the education offers a didacticism of Social Sciences that considers the nature of this type of knowledge, so those can be disciplines that form and introduce the students in a learning plan that makes them discover the rationality of the social analysis, with the whole formative load that it has. In that sense, it is fundamental that it is not diluted in the Social Sciences, but that it be configured in the school curriculum in a coherent way with the social science that produced this knowledge. Taking as object the History, here are presented the purposes and objectives of that discipline, highlighting its formative potentialities. History teaching is discussed recollecting that, besides the hermeutics difficulties that are inherent to every process of transmission of knowledge, the History gathers characteristics that transform it in a learning field with special difficulties. It is indicated the need of teaching History using the historian’s instruments, deriving of there the methods and work techniques, that point for activities that should be present in the whole didactic process...

This is an edited transcript of a symposium held by the Academy of Social Sciences and the ESRC and hosted by the University of Bath on 14 March 2007. The question addressed was 'whether the theory of natural selection has anything to offer present-day studies of culture and society'. Four leading scholars contributed from different disciplinary backgrounds. All focused on the Darwinian evolutionary paradigm of variation, replication and selection and agreed on its powerful contribution to understanding cultural and social entities and change. However, their contributions revealed the wide variety of concepts, frameworks and empirical studies which come under the general evolutionary heading. The seminar also illustrated the important contribution that such ideas can make to overcoming disciplinary boundaries in the social sciences

A Transatlantic History of the Social Sciences helps us better understand how and in what way the social sciences came to occupy a central place in universities across Europe and North America. Author Christian Fleck shows that the social sciences were born in order to help make sense of a complex and changing world, yet ultimately their very shape was structured by the very world they sought to explain. Daniel Sage finds the book to be essential reading for anyone interested in the origins of social research

Moneyball, starring Brad Pitt, premiered recently in Britain and though not apparent from the title, the film helps clarify some of the most pressing debates in political science, especially the hot-topic of the ‘impact’ of social science. Eric Kaufmann discusses how the story of a US baseball coach who utilised the human sciences to create a winning dynasty highlights the real, measurable forms of knowledge that social sciences can produce.

This paper discusses some widespread but often not fully articulated views concerning the possible roles of biology and evolution in the social sciences. Such views cluster around a set of intuitions that suggest that evolution's role is “ballistic”: it constitutes a starting point for mind that has been, and is, superseded by the role of culture and social construction. An implication is that evolved and the socially constructed aspects of mind are separable and independent, with the latter being the primary driver of mind. I outline four variants of the ballistic view. I then show how current findings and arguments in evolutionary thinking as related to mind contradict those ballistic views. The contrary view—that evolutionary and social factors are interdependent in the generation of social psychological capacities—is proposed as a consequence. This view is able to respect some insights of theories that make ballistic assumptions, whilst avoiding those assumptions.

A growing body of research shows that the overall quality of teaching and learning is improved when learners have the opportunity to become actively involved in the learning process through which ample opportunities are given to question, apply and consolidate new knowledge. With the dawning of a new South Africa in 1994, more emphasis was placed on learner-centred instruction and assessment which is the reason why policy documents such as the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) and the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) endorsed this educational approach. The aim of this study is to investigate through the observation of trainee teachers to what extent History and Social Sciences teachers have adjusted from their predominately traditional educational paradigm of transmitted and absorbed knowledge by passive learners to employ different learner-centred instructional and assessment practices that emphasise the responsibility of learning into actively engaging learners. By means of a structured questionnaire a small scale study (n=51) was done in urban, rural, township, and private schools in the North West and Gauteng provinces. The findings, inter alia, suggest that although History and Social Sciences teachers showed a willingness to utilise some of the learner-centred instruction strategies...
