The Internet and communication technologies have caused profound changes in the circulation of information, and consequently in the ways we teach, learn, and interact with each other. A research project was initiated in the year 2009 in order to investigate whether virtual communities, created from the existing social software on the web, provide the development of meaningful learning, the result of interactions, and knowledge sharing among its members. The first phase of the presented project assumed the design, development, and validation of an analysis and evaluation grid of virtual communities, which in the social web developed around the central theme Education-Training- Technologies.; Universidade do Minho. This paper reports on the use of social media marketing by pre-adults, setting off from a case study of students of different courses at one Portuguese higher education school. Data were collected through a questionnaire available online and analysed with descriptive statistical techniques. Based on the pointed outlines, this research explores and analyses four key issues: (1) what are the types of social media that students are using?; (2) in which contexts are they using each social media type?; (3) what are their opinions about the persuasive intentions of social media marketing?; and (4) how does social media marketing influence their brand knowledge, attitude and behaviour?. Within the research questions proposed, the study points towards some understanding of how the young at this age and education level see social media marketing. Furthermore, in this paper, tendencies around the concepts, the tools and levels of attraction by the audiences, with focus on relationship marketing in the 2.0 era, are revisited. This study, by focusing on this age group, contributes with critical information that might help cast light over recent theories and practices of social media marketing. The main results show that the youngsters are fans of several brands...

Among the many initiatives in using information and communication technologies (ICTs) for development, telecenters or kiosks occupy a prominent place. These centers provide public access to these technologies and related services through computers and internet. The last decade has seen many such initiatives being launched to bring the benefits of ICTs to the rural population in many countries. As most of these initiatives are relatively recent, there have been few evaluations of their social and economic impacts in their communities. There is also lack of a good understanding about a sound conceptual and theoretical framework for planning and design of such centers. This study seeks to fill a portion of this information gap by focusing on assessing the social, governance, and economic impacts of one such relatively large project in rural India and examining its implications and sustainability within the framework of the theory of diffusion of innovations. The project under study is the widely acclaimed Sustainable Access in Rural India (SARI) project, which has established computer and internet kiosks in over 40 rural communities in Tamil Nadu state in India. The kiosks provide basic computer education, e-mail, web browsing, e-government...

This short country report, a result of larger Information for Development Program (infoDev) - supported survey of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in education in Africa, provides a general overview of current activities and issues related to ICT use in education in the country. The Republic of Congo has recently developed an official ICT policy co-ordinated by the Committee for the Promotion of Information Technologies in Congo (COPTIC). One of the priorities is to set up a national plan for ICT infrastructure, the lack of which, along with the high cost of computer products and services, is hindering the development of ICT applications in several social sectors, including education. A recent lowering of custom fees has helped to alleviate the problem somewhat. Several distance education initiatives are being developed to provide students and businesses in the Congo with an opportunity to access advanced quality training.

The Internet and its increasing usage has changed informal learning in depth. This change has affected young and older adults in both the workplace and in higher education. But, in spite of this, formal and non-formal course-based approaches have not taken full advantage of these new informal learning scenarios and technologies. The Web 2.0 is a new way for people to communicate across the Internet. Communication is a means of transformation and knowledge exchange. These are the facts that cannot be obviated by the organisations in their training programmes and knowledge management. This special issue is devoted to investigating how informal learning changes or influences online information in Social Web and training strategies in institutions. In order to do so, five papers will present different approaches of informal learning in the workplace regarding Web 2.0 capabilities.; This proyect has been funded with the support of the Lifelong Learning Program of the European Union TRAILER Project (Reference: 519141 LLP 1 2011 1 ES KA3 KA3MP) and with the support from the European Commision. Nowadays the Social Networks are experiencing a growing importance. The reason of this is that they enable the information exchange among people, meeting people in the same field of work or establishing collaborations with other research groups. In order to manage social networks and to find people inside them, they are usually represented as graphs with persons as nodes and relationships between them as edges. Once this is done, establishing contact with anyone involves searching the chain of people to reach him/her, that is, the search of the path inside the graph which joins two nodes. In this paper, a new algorithm based on nature is proposed to realize this search: SoS-ACO (Sense of Smell - Ant Colony Optimization). This algorithm improves the classical ACO algorithm when it is applied in huge graphs.; This study was funded through a competitive grant awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science for the THUBAN Project (TIN2008-02711) and through MA2VICMR consortium (S2009/TIC-1542, http://www.mavir.net), a network of excellence funded by the Madrid Regional Government.; Proceedings of: Third International Conference on Computational Aspects of Social Networks (CASoN).Took place 2011, October,19-21 , in Salamanca (Sapin). The event Web site is http://www.mirlabs.net/cason11/

Senegal's hand on commitment to incorporating ICT in education is still in the beginning stages of progress and evaluation. Although Senegal's public officials and government bodies recognize ICT as a powerful engine for progress in economic expansion and modernization and have a national ICT policy in place, it has not yet been integrated into the education sector in any kind of formal policy. However, the Ministry of Education and several organizations have taken initiatives to launch and continue activities that will facilitate the modernization of schools and other educational institutions. Initiatives have also been made in the informal sector, such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Community Multimedia Center Scale-Up Project...

The change of paradigm imposed by the Bologna process, in which the student will be responsible for their own learning, and the presence of a new generation of students with higher technological skills, represent a huge challenge for higher education institutions. The use of new Web Social concepts in teaching process, supported by applications commonly called Web 2.0, with which these new students feel at ease, can bring benefits in terms of motivation and the frequency and quality of students' involvement in academic activities. An e-learning platform with web-based applications as a complement can significantly contribute to the development of different skills in higher education students, covering areas which are usually in deficit.

Many advocates of computer-mediated distance education emphasize its positive aspects and understate the kinds of communicative and technical capabilities and work required by students and faculty. There are few systematic analytical studies of students who have experienced new technologies in higher education. This article presents a qualitative case study of a web-based distance education course at a major U.S. university. The case data reveal a topic that is glossed over in much of the distance education literature written for administrators, instructors and prospective students: students' periodic distressing experiences (such as frustration, anxiety and confusion) in a small graduate-level course due to communication breakdowns and technical difficulties. Our intent is that this study will enhance understanding of the instructional design issues, instructor and student preparation, and communication practices that are needed to improve web-based distance education courses.; Indiana University

We have found ourselves in this delicate and complex moment in education. This is due to the development and acceleration of New Technology of Information and Communication (NNTT) of Social Webs. This is why we are carrying out an investigation on some teenagers who are at the risk of being excluded on a social and educational level. These teenagers are in this computer assistance programme which is part of PCPI (Professional Qualification Programme). Students make use of NNTT, the social web and TUENTI

There is currently much hype about a phenomenon known as Web 2.0 or social software and not a day goes by when there isn't a new story about the social networking site Facebook , or about a company buying space in Second Life . Librarians and libraries are certainly no different and Web 2.0, or ‘Library 2.0’ as it has been called, has been receiving considerable publicity recently. Even the professional body CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals) has opened offices in Second Life and has been encouraging CILIP groups to set up blogs. There have also been a number of recent publications on implementing Web 2.0 technologies in libraries.1,2 A team based at the University of London and led by Dr Jane Secker at LSE's Centre for Learning Technology, has spent the past 9 months working on the LASSIE (Libraries and Social Software in Education) project to explore how social software might enhance the distance learners' experience of libraries. The team includes librarians, learning technologists and archivists from the Institute of Education, the Open University, the University of London Research Library Services and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. This short paper will present an overview of the work of the project to date...

Describes a recent project funded by the University of London to explore how social software or web 2.0 technologies can enhance the use of libraries by distance learners. LASSIE (Libraries And Social Software In Education) involves a team of librarians, learning technologists and archivists. The project first conducted an extensive literature review, which is available online. (Secker, 2007) The literature review provides an overview of key social software and explores the current implementation of these tools by libraries. It also considers the key issues in supporting distance learners’ use of libraries and whether social software might provide solutions. The literature review was followed by several case studies to explore specific types of social software in practice. These included the use of social bookmarking for sharing resources, social software and online reading lists, blogging in the library community, the use of social networking sites and podcasting for information literacy support. LASSIE will be completed in December 2007 and a final report with results from the case studies and an updated literature review will be made available from the project website. One of the successes of the project has been to establish a project blog...

Student mobility policies have become a high priority of the European Union since they are expected to result in private and social returns. However, at the same time these policies risk leading to unwanted geographical consequences, particularly brain drain from lagging to core regions, as formerly mobile students may not return on completion of their studies. Accordingly, this thesis focuses on both the private returns to student mobility and the determinants of return migration. It is important to note that, currently, the literature about the mobility of students is scarce and provides mixed evidence regarding both these issues. We contribute to the current academic debate in this field by doing a case study on the Master and Back programme, which was implemented since 2005 by the Italian lagging region of Sardinia. The programme is co-financed by the European Social Fund and consists of providing talented Sardinian students with generous scholarships to pursue Master's and Doctoral degrees in the world's best universities. Concerning the private returns to migration, we evaluate the impact of this scheme on the odds of employment and net monthly income of the recipients. Moreover, we assess whether the scheme has been able to improve their job matching. To perform this analysis we access unique administrative data on the recipients and a suitable control group...
