We are living a time of intense renovation in what concerns the way the Catholic Church interacts with its citizens. In a certain sense, the “creative destruction” defended by Schumpeter (1942) also applies to the world of religion, once the new technologies have been replacing other ways of getting in touch with people. New paradigms and the notion that speech should become closer, leads the Church to adhere to the new digital and interactive media . Thus, we are witnessing the internet as a missionary tool, whether through websites or through social networks like MySpace, Facebook, Twitter or Youtube, a theme already presented in studies at IAMCR (Balonas: 2010, 2011). In short, religion is renewing its discourse with the outside world, creating new bridges of contact, seeking for more followers. Portuguese religious institutions are also aware of the power of these new mediators, reason why they have been hiring advertising and communication companies to implement new strategies for communication, targeting the younger. But this seems to be insufficient. A recent case study shows that the speech and the contents have to be rethought in an internal level, within the catholic community. Nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs) catalyze the formation of structurally diverse and biologically important peptides. Given their modular organization, NRPSs provide an enormous potential for biocombinatorial approaches to generate novel bioactive compounds. Crucial for the exploitation of this potential is a profound knowledge of the intermolecular communication between partner NRPSs. The overall goal of this study was to understand the basis of protein–protein communication that facilitates the selective interaction in these multienzyme complexes. On this account, we studied the relevance of short regions at the termini of the NRPSs tyrocidine (Tyc) synthetases TycA, TycB, and TycC, constituting the Tyc biosynthetic template. In vitro and in vivo investigations of C-terminal deletion mutants of the initiation module TycA provided evidence for the existence and impact of short communication-mediating (COM) domains. Their decisive role in protein–protein recognition was subsequently proven by means of COM domain-swapping experiments. Substitution of the terminal COM domains between the donor modules TycA and TycB3, as well as between the acceptor modules TycB1 and TycC1, clearly demonstrated that matching pairs of COM domains are both necessary and sufficient for the establishment of communication between partner NRPSs in trans. This short communication deals with the questions of how to calculate the expected proportion of compound heterozygous patients among affected offspring of consanguineous parents, and how, from an observed proportion of compound heterozygotes, to calculate both the proportion of homozygotes not identical by descent and the frequency of pathogenic alleles in the population. This estimate of allele frequency may be useful when dealing with populations with a considerable number of consanguineous matings.

Fibroblasts are a major stromal cell type present in human connective tissue maintaining the structural integrity in health. Depending on the situation, location and various conditions, fibroblasts exhibit considerable variation in morphology, size and shape that suggest the existence of discrete cellular subsets. The purpose of this short communication is to provide information regarding the heterogenecity of fibroblasts and its variability in physiological and pathological conditions.

SHORT-ROOT (SHR) is a key regulator of radial patterning and stem-cell renewal in the Arabidopsis root. Although SHR is expressed in the stele, its function in the vascular tissue was not recognized until recently. In shr, the protoxylem is missing due to the loss of expression of microRNA165A (miR165A) and microRNA166B (miR165B). shr is also defective in lateral root formation, but the mechanism remains unclear. To dissect the SHR developmental pathway, we recently have identified its direct targets at the genome scale by chromatin immunoprecipitation followed by microarray analysis (ChIP-chip). In further studies, we have shown that SHR regulates cytokinin homeostasis through cytokinin oxidase 3 and that this role of SHR is critical to vascular patterning in the root. In this communication we report that SHR also regulates miR165A and miR166B indirectly through its effect on cytokinin homeostasis. Although cytokinin is inhibitory to root growth, the root-apical-meristem defect in shr was not alleviated by reduction of endogenous cytokinin. These results together suggest that SHR regulates vascular patterning, but not root apical meristematic activity, through cytokinin homeostasis.

This short communication reports on the design and construction of a catheter manipulation skill enhancement phantom for use by residents and fellows outside the clinical environment. The phantom contains a variety of path trajectories and vessel diameter transitions, allowing trainees to manipulate catheters through vessel paths of varying difficulty. The multipath phantom, which is easy to construct and provides easily visualised paths, provides a simple, cost-effective training platform to facilitate and accelerate interventional training.

PPR (Pentatricopeptide repeat) proteins are mainly involved in RNA metabolism. In Arabidopsis, the PPR family is composed of more than 450 members; however, only few of them were functionally characterized. In a previous report,1 we identified a novel mitochondrial PPR RNA editing factor, named SLO2, which is responsible for 7 editing events in Arabidopsis. Loss-of-function mutation in SLO2 results in plant growth retardation, and delayed development, and leads to the dysfunction of mitochondrial complex I, III and IV. slo2 is the first example of a single gene mutation affecting 3 complexes of the mitochondrial electron transport chain. This Short Communication discusses the conservation of upstream regions of editing sites affected by SLO2 and illustrates the effect of mutation of SLO2 on activation of the alternative pathway. We also reflect upon the implications and perspectives of these findings.

Dental implants have evolved dramatically over the last decade, and so have our expectations from them in terms of functional and esthetic criteria. The maintenance and augmentation of the soft tissue has emerged as an area of concern and focus. The triad of anatomical peri-implant characteristics, soft tissue response to the implant material, and clinical skill form the fundamental principles in augmenting soft tissue. However, as clinicians, where are we with regards to the ability to augment and maintain soft tissue around dental implants, about 40 years after the first implants were placed? We now understand that peri-implant soft tissue management begins with extraction management. Our treatment modalities have evolved from socket compression post-extraction, to socket preservation with an aim to enhance the eventual peri-implant soft tissue. This short communication will assess the evolution of our thought regarding peri-implant soft tissue management, augmentation of keratinized mucosa around implants, and also look at some recent techniques including the rotated pedicle connective tissue graft for enhancing inter-implant papilla architecture. With newer research modalities, such as cyto-detachment technology, and cutting-edge bioengineering solutions (possibly a soft-tissue-implant construct) which might be available in the near future for enhancing soft tissue...

The mitochondrial enzyme succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) consists of four subunits, a flavoprotein (SDH1), an iron-sulfur (Fe-S) protein (SDH2) and two integral membrane subunits (SDH3/SDH4). In mammals and yeast, an assembly factor termed SDHAF2/SDH5 is required for accumulation of flavinylated SDH1. In Arabidopsis, we have recently reported the characterization of an unknown function protein with low sequence similarity to SDHAF2 that is needed for assembly and activity of SDH and also for normal root elongation.1 In this short communication, we have reviewed the sequence diversity and conservation of SDHAF2 across kingdoms based on phylogenetic analysis. Given that flavinylation of SDH is dependent on the SDH1:SDHAF2 interaction, we have also discussed the conservation of the C-terminal tail of SDH1, which is required for this interaction process. In combination, we provide comparative evidence for a conserved role of SDHAF2 as an assembly factor from animals to plants.

Current trends in pharmaceutical quality assurance moved when the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) of the USA published its new guideline on process validation in 2011. This guidance introduced the lifecycle approach of process validation. The goal of modern implant therapy entails more than just the successful osseointegration of the implant. A successful result must also include an esthetic and functional restoration surrounded by stable peri-implant tissue levels that are in harmony with the existing dentition. In an attempt to improve long-term bone maintenance around implants, a new implant-to abutment connection referred to as “platform switching” has been proposed. It refers to the use of an abutment of smaller diameter connected to an implant neck of larger diameter. Platform switching is a simple and effective way to control circumferential bone loss around dental implants. This short communication aims to present an overview of concept of platform switching in dental implantology.

Little is known about age-related differences in short-term effects of estradiol on ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) insults. The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of short-term treatment with estradiol on reperfusion arrhythmias in isolated hearts of 6-7-week-old and 12-14-month-old female rats. Wistar rats were sham-operated, ovariectomized and treated with vehicle or ovariectomized and treated with 17β-estradiol (E2; 5 µg·100 g−1·day−1) for 4 days. Hearts were perfused by the Langendorff technique. Reperfusion arrhythmias, i.e., ventricular tachycardia and/or ventricular fibrillation, were induced by 15 min of left coronary artery ligation and 30 min of reperfusion. The duration and incidence of I/R arrhythmias were significantly higher in young rats compared to middle-aged rats (arrhythmia severity index: 9.4 ± 1.0 vs 3.0 ± 0.3 arbitrary units, respectively, P < 0.05). In addition, middle-aged rats showed lower heart rate, systolic tension and coronary flow. Four-day E2 treatment caused an increase in uterine weight. Although E2 administration had no significant effect on the duration of I/R arrhythmias in middle-aged rats, it induced a marked reduction in the rhythm disturbances of young rats accompanied by a decrease in heart rate of isolated hearts. Mortality and morbidity from trauma continues to be a serious, ubiquitous public health problem. Our short communication reports on the benefits of a dedicated lower limb trauma coordinator (LLTC) to the trauma service of a busy inner-London Plastics unit. This is based on a retrospective case-note based audit; performed 19 months prior to the introduction of the LLTC and for 16 months after. After the introduction of a LLTC our statistical analysis demonstrated a significant improvement in trauma timings in terms of injury to referral time, time to first plastics operation and duration of inpatient stay. This suggests the use of a fully qualified nurse with an orthopaedic background as a coordinator may prove to be highly advantageous over a non-clinical administrator improving the overall journey of the lower limb trauma patient in the English National Health Service.

Symplasmic short- and long-distance communication may be regulated at different levels of plant body organization. It depends on cell-to-cell transport modulated by plasmodesmata conductivity and frequency but above all on morphogenetic fields that integrate a plant at the supracellular level. Their control of physiological and developmental processes is especially important in trees, where the continuum consists of 3-dimensional systems of: 1) stem cells in cambium, and 2) living parenchyma cells in the secondary conductive tissues. We found that long-distance symplasmic transport in trees is spatially regulated. Uneven distribution of fluorescent tracer in cambial cells along the branches examined illustrates an unknown intrinsic phenomenon that can possibly be important for plant organism integration. Here we illustrate the spatial dynamics of symplasmic transport in cambium, test and exclude the role of callose in its regulation, and discuss the mechanism that could possibly be responsible for the maintenance of this spatial pattern.

Video games are accepted and used for a wide variety of applications. In the medical world, research on the positive effects of playing games on basic laparoscopic skills is rapidly increasing. Although these benefits have been proven several times, no institution actually uses video games for surgical training. This Short Communication describes some of the theoretical backgrounds, development and underlying educational foundations of a specifically designed video game and custom-made hardware that takes advantage of the positive effects of games on basic laparoscopic skills.

The ward round (WR) is a complex task and medical teachers are often faced with the challenge of finding a balance between service provision and clinical development of learners. Some aspects of pathogenesis and therapeutic approach to the gingival recession are discussed in this short communication with the example of a typical case from Russia, where excessive socket curettage after a tooth extraction resulted in a marked gingival recession. Subgingival plaque and calculus can be secondary to recession. An argument about plaque as a source of microorganisms might be plausible in case of inflammation, although various microorganisms are normal for the oral cavity. From the viewpoint of general pathology, being an atrophic condition, recession can progress due to repeated damage. On the author's opinion, calculus removal is not indicated at least for aged patients with marked gingival recession, having modest esthetic demands. Socket curettage after exodontia should be gentle. Surgical treatment of the gingival recession is beyond the scope of this communication.
