The main aim of this dissertation paper is to study how can companies create Shared Value (CSV) to a given community, by engaging in Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The problem statement relies on questioning if CSR is the best solution to provide CSV or if there must be something else a company must do, namely, create a special segment in order to address this subject matter. In order to comply with the objective of explaining the problem statement, a study case was built with EDP Group, the leader in the energy sector in Portugal, as well as its Foundation; EDP Foundation, leader in the tertiary sector in the same country. The case study is important to analyze if the companies which address CSR are delivering the shared value desired by society, or if it would be better for them to address CSR by the means of a Foundation, or a different entity, that deals solely with the tertiary sector. The structure of this dissertation consists in five main chapters: (1) Introduction, referring to aim, scope and methodology that will be used in the dissertation paper; (2) Literature Review...

In the past years, a lot has been said about the role business develops in society. There are opposite views about the position that both business and society should take. In fact, it is a theme that is increasingly popular and there is an increasing discussion around it in the business academic arena. However, one thing is clear: companies have to address societal issues in a proactive way in order to satisfy the increasing demands of their stakeholders. They really have to do good or, at least, appear to. This is the reason why many companies have been pursuing Social Responsibility strategies in order to rebrand its image, trying to create a competitive advantage in an evolving market. The main idea of the present dissertation is to study why and how companies should engage in Social Responsibility strategies in order to create both economic and societal value. The problem statement relies on understanding how a strategic focus on social issues may create a sustainable, long-term view where both economic and social values are created. The present dissertation, written in the form of a case study, aims to present the successful case of Nestlé when developing and implementing its Creating Shared Value strategy. All the steps that Nestlé took since 2006 are analysed to explain why and how did Nestlé successfully change the image of the company while increasing the total pool of value created...

Over the years we have seen a growing awareness of consumers and investors concerning companies’ good practices. Corporate Social Responsibility has been gaining ground and has now become part of several companies’ strategic plan as a means of creating a win-win situation for themselves and for society through the creation of Shared Value. In this context, we thought it pertinent to introduce BizSpark, a global Microsoft’s three-year program that supports technological startups by providing them with free software and giving the opportunity to access a wide network of partners, through a case-study. The focus of this dissertation is on the impact of the BizSpark program in the Portuguese entrepreneurial environment and, consequently, the national competitiveness. With the BizSpark program, Microsoft is filling a gap in society, the lack of support to early-stage startups, and is simultaneously improving its competitive context. BizSpark plays a fundamental role in enhancing the entrepreneurship in Portugal once its helps startups to overcome one of their biggest barriers, the fear of failure. In order to be effective, the entire organization including leadership should be committed to implementing Shared Value.; Ao longo dos anos a preocupação de consumidores e investidores quanto às boas práticas das empresas tem vindo a crescer. Neste sentido...

Most distributed applications require, at least conceptually, some sort of shared state: information that is non-static but mostly read, and needed at more than one site. At the same time, RPC-based systems such as Sun RPC, Java RMI, CORBA, and .NET have become the de facto standards by which distributed applications communicate. As a result, shared state tends to be implemented either through the redundant transmission of deep-copy RPC parameters or through ad-hoc, application-specific caching and coherence protocols. The former option can waste large amounts of bandwidth; the latter significantly complicates program design and maintenance. To overcome these problems, we propose a distributed middleware system that works seamlessly with RPC-based systems, providing them with a global, persistent store that can be accessed using ordinary reads and writes. In an RPC-based program, shared state serves to (1) support genuine reference parameters in RPC calls, eliminating the need to pass large structures repeatedly by value, or to recursively expand pointer-rich data structures using deep-copy parameter modes; (2) eliminate invocations devoted to maintaining the coherence and consistency of cached data; (3) reduce the number of trivial invocations used simply to put or get data. Relaxed coherence models and aggressive protocol optimizations reduce the bandwidth required to maintain shared state. Integrated support for transactions allows a chain of RPC calls to update that state atomically. We focus in this paper on the implementation challenges involved in combining RPC with shared state...

Corporate sustainability ratings are a potentially powerful but still underused tool for building a competitive, socially purposeful, and financially sound enterprise. In a globalizing world replete with business opportunities and risk, corporate boards continually need to reappraise what constitutes good governance. Traditional board duties pertaining to strategic oversight, executive compensation, and financial auditing will remain integral for the foreseeable future. But these alone will not suffice in a time when the prosperity of companies is inextricably linked to issues such as reputation, brands, supply chain management, quality and quantity of human and intellectual capital, protection of human and labor rights, and climate change. Such emergent issues are part of a historical moment in which the role of companies in fostering societal and ecological well-being at the global, national, and local levels is under increasing scrutiny. These are conditions that fuel intensifying public discourse concerning corporate social responsibility...

The Transparency Amendment, included in the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, can be an important tool in curtailing the resource curse that so heavily burdens resource-rich developing countries by shedding light on opaque payments between the extractive sector and host countries. From the get-go, however, extractive industry companies have fiercely opposed the new mandatory disclosure requirements as set out in this regulation. The corporate opposition is for the largest part motivated by the fear of a competitive disadvantage that derives from the fact that the amendment is housed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and thus only holds jurisdiction over those that report to the SEC. Although on the one hand watering down these corporate fears, this article draws on the “shared value approach” and empirical evidence to argue that there is a business case for transparency. This refreshing take on transparency regulation invites corporate leaders to reassess their current oppositional stance and to embrace new initiatives like the Transparency Amendment and to take a proactive stance in building a convincing global regulatory system of transparency.

The purpose of this study is to better understand the relationship between business and development by looking particularly at the textile and garment industry in Bangladesh. Previous research shows that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), or what today is better known as creating shared value, is often seen as a bridge connecting the arenas of business and development. This report raises and seeks to answer questions centered on the idea of ‘Decent Work’ as propounded by the International Labour Organization (ILO). What is the quality of life of workers in factories in Bangladesh who produce clothing’s that are exported to Europe? Can we call the conditions of employment of these workers as what ILO terms ‘Decent Work’? An exploratory research design is used to understand the different aspects of the research question. Data collection is performed through secondary data, and the research is divided into a quantitative and qualitative part. A statistical database is used to try to understand ILOs indicators of ‘Decent Work’ from the perspective of the local textile and garment worker in Bangladesh. Furthermore, five companies’ sustainability approach has been analyzed, all outsourcing their manufacturing to Bangladesh. The findings indicate that there are areas for improvement. Through relocation of supply chains...

Purpose – The paper aims to explain why the customer value construct is important to resource-based view (RBV) scholars and how one might define it to study it. Design/methodology/approach – By a summary of the ideas behind the RBV and previously applied definitions of customer value, the paper explains why Woodruff's multidimensional definition of customer value is suited to studying customer value from a managerial perspective. To this end, it develops a framework and derives three research questions for studying how managers use the firm's resources to create customer value. Findings – It was found that to understand how managers invest in dynamic capabilities to create customer value one must identify how a firm's managers develop a shared understanding of their customers' values and the firm's capacity to deliver on them. This shared understanding will need to reflect customers' multidimensional values and what is most important to the firm. Practical implications – These phenomena are best studied qualitatively because the focus is on understanding how managers work together and use the resources at their disposal to create customer value. The performance effects of different resource investment decisions can be examined by including high and low performing firms in the study dataset. Originality/value – The paper describes a framework that can explain how managers map customer value and its different dimensions against the resources at the firm which they believe can deliver an optimal product and service mix to the firm's customers.; Angelina Zubac...

We present Masstree, a fast key-value database designed for SMP machines. Masstree keeps all data in memory. Its main data structure is a trie-like concatenation of \(B^+\)-trees, each of which handles a fixed-length slice of a variable-length key. This structure effectively handles arbitrary-length possiblybinary keys, including keys with long shared prefixes. \(^+\)-tree fanout was chosen to minimize total DRAM delay when descending the tree and prefetching each tree node. Lookups use optimistic concurrency control, a read-copy-update-like technique, and do not write shared data structures; updates lock only affected nodes. Logging and checkpointing provide consistency and durability. Though some of these ideas appear elsewhere, Masstree is the first to combine them. We discuss design variants and their consequences. On a 16-core machine, with logging enabled and queries arriving over a network, Masstree executes more than six million simple queries per second. This performance is comparable to that of memcached, a non-persistent hash table server, and higher (often much higher) than that of VoltDB, MongoDB, and Redis.; Engineering and Applied Sciences

This is the final published version. It first appeared at http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/21681015.2014.1000399#.VWSB4S6fbe4.; Pressures on business to operate sustainably are increasing. This requires companies to adopt a systemic approach that seeks to integrate consideration of the three dimensions of sustainability ? social, environmental, and economic ? in a manner that generates shared value creation for all stakeholders including the environment and society. This is referred to as sustainable business thinking. The business model concept offers a framework for system-level innovation for sustainability and provides the conceptual linkage with the activities of the firm such as design, production, supply chains, partnerships, and distribution channels. A value mapping tool has been presented in the literature to assist in sustainable business model innovation. This study explores the use of value mapping for broader sustainable business thinking, by reflection on its use in workshop settings. A range of new applications is identified which is expected to be of interest to business practitioners, policy makers, and academic researchers.; This work was supported by Sustain Value, a European Commission?s 7th Framework Program [FP7/2007?2013]; and the EPSRC Center for Innovative Manufacturing in Industrial Sustainability [RG64858].

This project is the simulation of page based distributed shared memory originally called IVY proposed by Li in 1986[3] and then by Li and Hudak in 1989[4]. The 'Page Based Distributed Shared Memory System' consists of a collection of clients or workstations connected to a server by a Local Area Network. The server contains a shared memory segment within which the distributed database is located. The shared memory segment is divided in the form of pages and hence the name 'Page Based Distributed Shared Memory System' where each page represents a table within that distributed database. In the simplest variant, each page is present on exactly one machine. A reference to a local page is done at full memory speed. An attempt to reference a page on a different machine causes a page fault, which is trapped by the software. The software then sends a message to the remote machine, which finds the needed page and sends it to the requesting process. The fault is then restarted and can now complete, which is achieved with the help of Inter Process Communication (IPC) library. In essence, this design is similar to traditional virtual memory systems: when a process touches a nonresident page, a fault occurs and the operating system fetches the page and maps it in. The difference here is that instead of getting the page from the disk...
