Young Black males, aged 13 to 29 years, have the highest annual rates of HIV infections in the United States. Young Black men who have sex with men (MSM) are the only subgroup with significant increases in HIV incident infections in recent years. Black men, particularly MSM, are also disproportionately affected by other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Therefore, we must strengthen HIV and STI prevention opportunities during routine, preventive health care visits and at other, nontraditional venues accessed by young men of color, with inclusive, nonjudgmental approaches. The Affordable Care Act and National HIV/AIDS Strategy present new opportunities to reframe and strengthen sexual health promotion and HIV and STI prevention efforts with young men of color.

Since the International Conference on Population and Development, definitions of sexuality and sexual health have been greatly elaborated alongside widely accepted recognition that sexual health requires respect, protection and fulfilment of human rights. Considerable progress has also been made in enacting or changing laws that affect sexuality and sexual health, in line with human rights standards. These measures include legal guarantees against non-discrimination and violence, decriminalisation of consensual sexual conduct and guaranteeing availability, accessibility, acceptability and quality of sexual health information and services to all. Such legal actions have had positive effects on health and specifically on sexual health, particularly for marginalised populations. Yet in all regions of the world, laws still exist which jeopardise health, including sexual health, and violate human rights. In order to ensure accountability for the rights and health of their populations, states have an obligation to bring their laws into line with international, regional and national human rights standards. These rights-based legal guarantees, while insufficient alone, are essential for effective systems of accountability, achieving positive sexual health outcomes and the respect and protection of human rights.

Thesis (Ph. D.)--University of Rochester. Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development, 2008.; Sexual health is woven into the fabric of society and is “inherently related to many of the social and public health concerns and challenges in the United States today” (di Mauro, 1995, p.1). Despite the saliency of sexual health concerns in the public health arena, sexuality is not currently being adequately addressed in counseling and mental health training curriculum (Gray, House, & Eicken, 1995). This gap in sexual health content at the baccalaureate and master levels of clinical training was the focus of this dissertation study, which aimed to explore how clinical staff at a not-for-profit child and adolescent mental health service agency: 1) conceptualize sexual health, 2) characterize their own practices related to inclusion of sexual health considerations, and 3) respond to questions related to their general attitudes and knowledge of sexual health.
Research participants completed instruments that included a survey pertaining to staff attitudes and beliefs, a sexual knowledge questionnaire, and a demographic questionnaire created by this researcher that included training, cultural values, family influences...

Parent-child sexual health communication can be beneficial. Many factors affect such communication in Chinese immigrant families. This qualitative study explored the influences of acculturation, parenting, and parental participation in the Raising Sexually Healthy Children Program (RSHC) on such communication. With a hermeneutic framework, the purpose was to develop understanding based on the topic, context, and researcher interpretations. Twelve interviews elicited data from six parent-child dyads, three from the RSHC. Analysis involved coding processes; data were compared repeatedly and organized into themes. Perceived personality differences between generations were confounded with cultural communicative differences. Parents used implicitness observed in Chinese culture to establish "open" communication; children expected explicitness observed in Western culture. Post- RSHC, parents perceived themselves as more open to talking about sex; children did not perceive such parental changes. Future research should include joint interviews and longitudinal program evaluation. Future practice should focus on cross-cultural communication and involving children in RSHC.

Thesis (Ph.D.) - Indiana University, School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, 2009; Research into the provision of sexual health information for Indiana youth has demonstrated inadequate school support and little to no information exchange between Indiana parents and their children. Community leaders in Indiana have suggested that community-based organizations (CBOs) may play a role in providing sexual health information to young people. However, little is known about the nature of sexual health information resources among youth-serving Indiana community-based organizations. The purpose of this study was to assess the provision of sexual health information by Indiana youth-serving community-based organizations. Specifically, the study looked to assess 1) the comfort, confidence, skills, and knowledge (CCSK) of youth development professionals (YDPs) in addressing questions from youth about sexuality, and 2) the potential for CBOs to provide sexuality-related programming, referrals, and resources to adolescents in Indiana. Utilizing community-based participatory research (CBPR) methods, a community advisory board developed and implemented a 20-minute Internet survey. The survey measured constructs determined by the community advisory board to be relevant to the foci above. Results of the study found a high level of CCSK among YDPs as well as a high level of desire for additional training. Less than half of participants indicated their organizations offered programming and resources on various sexuality-related topics. About half of participants indicated their organization had referral protocols in place for a variety of sexual health issues. Availability of programming...

Thesis (Ph.D.) - Indiana University, School of Public Health, 2015; Female Intravenous Drug Users (IDUs) face numerous unique health risks and challenges, yet their singular experiences are rarely captured in research given how difficult these populations can be to reach. The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of the HIV-related sexual and drug use behaviors of, and to assess the experiences of access to healthcare services and of sexual aggression among female IDUs in Puerto Rico. In collaboration with community based and government organizations that provide drug outreach programs and addiction treatment services in Puerto Rico, a mixed-methods study, utilizing a transformative theoretical perspective, was completed utilizing surveys and semi-structured interviews as methods of inquiry. Ninety women who reported IDU within the last 12 months and who received services from one of the study recruitment venues were recruited to participate in the survey portion of the study. Additionally, 35 women who had previously completed the survey completed semi-structured interviews. Measures included sociodemographic characteristics, drug use, most recent/lifetime sexual behavior history, experiences of sexual violence...

This report examines Australia's role in the provision of reproductive health services to victims of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This includes the role of the Australian Government, the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and various Australian NonGovernment Organisations (NGOs). This topic is of particular relevance in 2010, as the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade (JSCFADT) conducts its inquiry into Australia's relationship with the countries of Africa, with a focus on development assistance co-operation and capacity building. Research for the report included a wide-ranging examination of the issue of sexual violence and reproductive health in the DRC. It included information and analysis from various international agencies such as the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the World Health Organisation (WHO), as well as from the Australian Government and the individual NGOs themselves. Interviews were conducted with the various NGOs in order to assess the current need for reproductive health services within the DRC as well as the capacity of the NGOs to provide them. The major findings of the report indicate that the most pressing need for victims of sexual violence in the DRC is access to basic health services...

Over the past decade a number of community based sexual health projects aimed solely at young men have proved to be very successful at attracting young men into genitourinary medicine services. These projects are often short term funded and under evaluated so it isn't clear exactly how successful they are and why this might be so. These projects should be carefully evaluated and examined to elicit factors, either unique or common in nature, which could be utilised by mainstream sexual health services wishing to develop work with young men. There are many barriers to this happening in mainstream services, some being resource and time problems and others to do with values of staff and lack of quality training. The article looks at practical ways that working with men and the skills and confidence of staff can be improved in mainstream settings while recognising that much of what needs to be done to support the needs of young men must take place in the planning and commissioning stage of services.

Despite the World Health Organization's definition of sexual health as a state of well-being, virtually no public health research has examined sexual well-being outcomes, including sexual satisfaction. Emerging evidence suggests that sexual well-being indicators are associated with more classic measures of healthy sexual behaviors. We surveyed 2168 university students in the United States and asked them to rate their physiological and psychological satisfaction with their current sexual lives. Many respondents reported that they were either satisfied (approximately half) or very satisfied (approximately one third). In multivariate analyses, significant (P < .05) correlates of both physiological and psychological satisfaction included sexual guilt, sexual self-comfort, self-esteem (especially among men), relationship status, and sexual frequency. To enhance sexual well-being, public health practitioners should work to improve sexual self-comfort, alleviate sexual guilt, and promote longer term relationships.

O texto se encerra afirmando, ainda, a necessidade desses espaços para formulação e implementação de propostas que considerem os diversos perfis de morbi-mortalidade do município.; This paper aims to show the situation of the male reproductive and sexual healthcare in the municipality of Francisco Morato in 2004, based on the discourse of health professionals...

Women who have sex with women face a unique, yet under-researched set of HIV/AIDS-related risks in sub-Saharan Africa. The findings of this study highlights a tension that, on the one hand, exists between the heteronormativity of healthcare providers and broader society, and the ways in which this silences lesbians and other women who have sex with women in their healthcare interactions and, on the other, the totalising view of WSW sexualities within this community, which silences conversations about HIV because such conversations may expose or accuse a person of 'not being a real lesbian'. The women within the African lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) community who participated in our study had scant access to credible HIV/AIDS and safe-sex information, resulting in various and dangerous (mis)conceptions proliferating. The vulnerability of lesbians and other WSW to HIV infection is a complicated public health issue that is perplexing to some and ignored by many, not only on the African continent, but globally. Our research indicates that some WSW engage in high-risk behaviour that places them at an increased risk for HIV transmission. Furthermore, a lack of access to inclusive prevention and healthcare services and an unwillingness to seek treatment are often the consequence of stigma and discrimination and point to distinct inequalities for female-identified LGBTI persons. The study explored the prevailing perceptions of women within the LGBTI community on HIV/AIDS...

Societies are reluctant to openly confront issues of sexuality, and this reluctance forms a barrier of communication between parents and teenagers and even between sexual partners (Wulf, 2004:2). This reluctance promotes the presence of misconceptions about sexual health, sexual risks and its consequences. Poor dialogue about sexual health between parents and teenagers is one of the contributory factors of high teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates including HIV and AIDS. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe how dialogue about sexual health between teenagers and parents is conducted and to use the information gathered as a basis for making recommendations for improvement. A qualitative study of an explorative, descriptive and contextual nature was used. The researcher used the main question as a point of departure and more questions emanated from the discussions. There were 42 informants involved in the study, of which 4 were males and 38 were females. A purposive sampling method was used to collect data through in depth individual interviews and focus group discussions. The researcher strived to adhere to the principle of trustworthiness by adopting Guba's model (in Krefting, 1991: 217). Tech's method (Creswell...
