Articular cartilage (AC) is an aneural and avascular tissue that covers the ends of articulating bones in diarthrodial joints, and its main functions are to distribute joint loading and to provide nearly frictionless movement of the articulating bones. The mechanical properties of AC can be attribute to the complex structure of its extracellular matrix (ECM), mainly composed by collagen fibres, proteoglycan (PG) aggregates and interstitial water [1, 2]. Nowadays, the progression of mean expectation of life has highlighted the importance of a correct diagnosis for many age-related diseases. In AC, aging process occur in older age with cellular senescence [3, 4] and ECM modifications [5, 6], frequently involving in Osteoarthritic diseases [7–9]. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common degenerative joint disease and represent one of the most common disabilities cause (6,6% of Italian population, actually), posing a high economical burden to society. OA is characterized by the proceeding destruction of AC by uncontrolled proteolysis of ECM and typically leads to a remodeling of affected joints. No treatment neither early diagnosis method currently exist for OA pathologies, and the detection of differences and relations between early OA and aging is still an open field in clinical research [3...

We focus on the Brownian motion within channels with varying cross – section as well as on the diffusion on branched structures, a subject particularly relevant for the modeling of the passive transport process within living cells, which are characterized by a naturally constrained environment and the motion, at least on the length scales of the macromolecules, is well described by diffusion rather than bulk flow. In particular, we studied the occurrence of anomalous transport in a variety of branched structures and fractal trees. We proved that the Fluctuation Dissipation Relation (FDR) can be extended, in some cases, to the anomalous transport regime, at least within the linear response approximation. On the other hand, We pointed out how the FDR can be broken by choosing properly the branching of the analyzed structure, as a consequence of the emergence of an “entropic” drift due to the high ramifications introduced. This result suggests that FDRs are more sensitive to the geometrical structure rather than to the details of the dynamics. Il presente lavoro di ricerca è stato articolato intorno a temi attinenti l’ingegneria biomedica, riguardando, in particolare, lo studio del comportamento di agenti di contrasto in campi ultracustici per tecniche di ecografia diagnostica. Nell’ambito di tale settore scientifico, un ruolo di fondamentale importanza è svolto dalla diagnostica medica per immagini e in particolare dalle tecniche ecografiche. Queste ultime rappresentano un ottimo compromesso tra la pericolosità per l’organismo e la necessità di ottenere immagini dettagliate delle sue sezioni interne, al fine di poter ricavare importanti informazioni sullo stato di salute del paziente. La modesta invasività dell’ecografia diagnostica, inoltre, contribuisce a rendere tale tecnica uno degli strumenti di indagine più utilizzati in ambito medico, non essendo necessari per il suo svolgimento alcuna forma di sedazione o terapia preparatoria. In generale, per tutte le tecniche ecografiche, la ricostruzione delle immagini dei vari distretti corporei costituenti un sistema biologico è basata sulla rilevazione delle onde ultrasonore riflesse in corrispondenza delle discontinuità tessutali presenti al loro interno.
