Herbicides in the upper Poxim River, Sergipe, and the risk of contamination of water resources

Increased agricultural activity in watershed areas has been causing concern over contamination by herbicides in agricultural areas. The problem becomes more important when contamination can affect water for human consumption, as happens with water from the Poxim river, which supplies the city of Aracaju, capital of the State of Sergipe. The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk of contamination by herbicides to both surface and groundwater in the upper sub-basin of the Poxim River, and to detect the presence of the active ingredients Diuron and Ametrine up-river from the sugar-cane plantations. Risk analysis was carried out using criteria from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the GUS index, and the GOSS method. It was observed that several active ingredients are at risk of leaching, demonstrating the importance of monitoring the river to control both the quality of water and the frequency and volume of herbicides used in the region. Based on the results, monitoring was carried out bi-monthly from July 2009 to July 2010 at two sampling points. Water samples were analyzed in the laboratory, where the presence of Diuron and Ametrine was noted. O sistema estuarino-lagunar do Rio São Francisco, litoral norte da zona costeira de Sergipe, é uma região que apresenta vastas áreas de manguezal, apesar da incidência de tensores antrópicos. O presente estudo realizou um diagnóstico ambiental dos manguezais dessa zona costeira, considerando-se os níveis hierárquicos setting (paisagem), stand (unidade de paisagem) e site (parcela ou árvore), adaptado da proposta de Schaeffer-Novelli et al. (2000; 2005). Imagens de satélites e fotografias aéreas coloridas da área de estudo foram processadas em SIG e foi gerado um mapa de uso e cobertura da terra para 2008. Verdade de campo foi realizada e características qualitativas da composição da vegetação e da estrutura de bosques de mangue foram registradas. Atualmente 93% (179 km2) da zona costeira em estudo é ocupada por áreas de vegetação natural: manguezal (30 Km2, 16%), apicum (1,4 Km2,0,7%) e formações pioneiras de influência marinha (14 Km2, 77%); enquanto que 7% (13,56 km2) é ocupada por áreas antrópicas: aquicultura (4,6 Km2, 2,4%) e culturas de coco e arroz (9 Km2, 4,7%). Acid volatile sulfide (AVS), simultaneously extracted metals (SEM) and metals were studied in sediment cores from the Sergipe River Estuary, Brazil. AVS and SEM concentrations were, in general, higher in the core sediments from areas which receive a higher anthropic contribution due to urban pollution. In these cores, the sulfide seemed to be the main connection for the metals. In the core obtained from the area of major marine influence, the most important binding phases for the metals seemed to be associated with organic matter and carbonates. The AVS profiles allow identification of two types of sedimentation processes in the estuary. In all cores SEM/AVS ratios were much lower than 1.

The Poxim river hydrographic sub-basin comprises four freshwater rivers, Poxim-Açu, Poxim-Mirim, Poxim and Pitanga, and is located in the East of Sergipe State, Northeast of Brazil. The present work investigates the distribution, the factors controlling concentrations, and toxicity risks of the metals Co, Cr, Cu, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, Al and Fe, in surface sediments of the four rivers. Toxicity was evaluated using the Consensus-based Sediment Quality Guidelines for freshwater ecosystems. Spearman correlation analysis did not indicate any association of the metals with organic matter, however strong, moderate and weak correlations with aluminium, iron, and manganese, respectively, suggested that clay minerals were the main carrier of metals to sediments. Concentrations of metals in all samples were below the TEC (threshold effect concentration), indicating that for these trace metals adverse effects on aquatic biota should rarely occur. A geochemical baseline for the region was defined using lithium as reference element. Metal enrichments due to anthropogenic influence were only observed at three sites. At other sites, enrichment factors were indicative of a large predominance of naturally occurring metals in the sediments.

The sequential extraction procedure proposed by the European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) was applied for the fractionation of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in sediments from the Sergipe Estuary, Brazil. The method showed satisfactory recoveries, detection limits and standard deviations for trace metals determinations in sediment samples. Cd was the metal with the greatest percentage in the exchangeable fraction. Pb and Ni were present mainly in the reducible and oxidizable fractions. Cr, Cu and Zn were predominantly associated with the residual fraction. The order of mobility of metals extracted was Pb > Cd > Ni > Cu > Cr > Zn. According to the risk assessment code (RAC), the sediments showed low to medium risk for all metals.

Fluorescence spectroscopy and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) measurements were used to characterize the dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the Piauí River estuary, a tropical estuary situated in the State of Sergipe, Northeast Brazil. Fluorescence intensities were greater during the rainy period than the dry period, demonstrating that variability in the fluorescence properties of the DOM was determined mainly by the fluvial discharge and the dilution processes occurring in the estuary. During the rainy period, tryptophan-like and humic substances were the main components of the DOM, while during the dry period there was a significant increase of protein-like constituents. Relationships identified between fluorescence intensities and salinity were indicative of non-conservative behavior of the fluorescent DOM. DOC showed behavior that was conservative during the dry period, and non-conservative during the rainy period, with production of DOC in the upper reaches of the estuary. The complexation of DOM with Cu(II), studied using the fluorescence suppression technique, showed the complexation potentials of protein, tryptophan and humic type fluorophores.

The distributions of Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Fe and Al were investigated in surface sediments collected at 19 sites in the Sergipe River Hydrographic Basin of Northeast Brazil. A regional geochemical baseline (RGB) was defined using iron as a reference element. Enrichment factors (EF) and geoaccumulation indices (Igeo) were used to determine the extent of anthropogenic metal pollution. EF values showed that sediments from sites 1, 5 and 13 could be considered contaminated by Pb, Cr and Cu, respectively. Igeo values showed that only site 13 could be considered contaminated. For other sites, results indicated that naturally occurring metals predominated in the sediments. Possible toxicity related to these metals was examined using the comparing sediment chemical data with sediment quality guidelines (SQG) PEC-TEC values. Principal component analysis (PCA) clearly separated the sites into two groups and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) confirmed the interpretations made from the PCA results.

The objectives of this paper were to analyze the seasonal distributions of climatic and hydrological variables along the Lower São Francisco River, Northeastern Brazil, between the States of Sergipe and Alagoas, and further, to verify their relationships with the erosion of the right margin in Sergipe State. The investigated area comprises the sedimentary portions of the Lower São Francisco River, located at the Cotinguiba-Pindoba Irrigated Perimeter. Historical records of variables such as rainfall, river streamflow velocity, river discharge, wind velocity and the predominant direction were collected from a climatological station as well as rain and streamflow gauges located in the municipality of Propriá. The rainfall that occurs in the region is considered non-erosive, 96.2% of the rain had intensity less than 25.0 mm h-1. The evolution of erosion is explained by the increase in the outflow in February that peaked at 9,894.50 m³ s-1 and led to increases in the flow velocity. The rainfall regime interacts with the wind that blows predominantly from the eastern direction during the dry season and from the southeastern direction during the rainy season with maximum velocities of 5.5 and 8.0 m s-1, respectively.

We surveyed populations of the broad-snouted caiman, Caiman latirostris, throughout the São Francisco River basin, from Três Marias reservoir, State of Minas Gerais, to the river delta, at the boarder of Sergipe and Alagoas states. We registered the occurrence of crocodilians in 61% of all surveyed localities (n = 64), in which the presence of C. latirostris was confirmed in 44% of the surveyed sites. Caimans occurred in both lentic and lotic habitats, although there was a preference for small dams, oxbow lakes and wetlands. Despite the hunting pressure and human impact on natural habitats, our results indicate that the populations of C. latirostris in the São Francisco basin are not fragmented.

The state of Sergipe has suffered extreme reduction of its Atlantic Forest area in the last decades. The objective of this study is to present an inventory of the Mata do Crasto flora, the largest Atlantic Forest Remnant in Sergipe (approximately 1,000 ha), located in the Municipality of Santa Luzia do Itanhy. An intensive survey was undertaken with monthly plant collections in the study area, for four years (1995 to 1999). Additionally, collections deposited in herbaria were consulted to complete the species list. A total of 324 species were found, belonging to 84 families and 193 genera. This study adds an additional 29 genera and 96 species to the Sergipe flora as new occurrences. The four most speciose families were the Fabaceae (33 species), Rubiaceae (24 species), Myrtaceae (23 species) and Melastomataceae (15 species), that accounted for ca. 30% of the total species. The taxonomic distinction of the area is very similar to three other lowland forests in Northeastern Brazil, although its species composition is quite distinct.

O imposex é um excelente marcador da contaminação marinha por compostos orgânicos de estanho (COEs). Esse fenômeno consiste no surgimento de caracteres sexuais masculinos mensuráveis, em fêmeas de neogastrópodes. Um total de 17 estações de coleta foram olhidas nas proximidades do terminal portuário de Jaraguá no Estado de Alagoas e no interior do estuário do Rio Sergipe, no Estado de Sergipe. Em ambas as áreas observa-se um intenso tráfego de embarcações. Em cada uma dessas estações foram coletados um total de 30 exemplares adultos de Stramonita rustica. Esses animais foram conduzidos ao laboratório e analisados quanto à presença do imposex revelando índices altamente elevados. A presença de imposex nessas amostras sugere fortemente que as referidas áreas estão contaminadas por COEs visto que o imposex só ocorre em animais expostos a esse tipo de contaminação.; Imposex in gastropods is used worldwide as a bioindicator of organotin compounds (OTs). Imposex is the imposition of male secondary sexual characteristics in female neogastropods. Samples of 30 adult Stramonita rustica were collected in 17 sites from Jaraguá Harbor in Alagoas State and Sergipe River estuary in Sergipe State. These areas presented high shipping activities. The samples were led to the laboratory and were examined for occurrence of imposex. The imposex levels observed in samples were very high. The occurrence of imposex in S. rustica from harbor areas indicated organotin contamination.

To clarify the functional mechanisms of habitat use is necessary to analyze it in conjunction with the conduct performed by animals. The occurrence, distribution and use of space are characteristic of a species resulting from habitat selection that is in search of conditions favorable to its survival. One can relate the physical and biological factors of the environment with the ecological characteristics of the species, since these factors act by regulating the ecological success of organisms, and from there you can get important information about the habitat use and behavior of individuals. This study aimed to characterize the use of habitat and diurnal activity expressed by the Guiana dolphin, Sotalia guianensis in an estuarine area of Sergipe state, Brazil, analyzing the influence of tide and time days on the occurrence of animals and behavior s state, and group s size and composition in this cetacean species. Tomando-se em consideração o contexto socioambiental do Comitê da Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio Sergipe frente a sua área de gestão, foram realizadas observações presenciais durante as reuniões (gestão 2008 - 2010), possibilitando sinalizar algumas dificuldades enfrentadas entre estrutura física, apoio logístico até a efetiva realização de uma gestão participativa. In the context of hydrographic condition of the State, the basin of Sergipe River is to be presented with greater diversity in relation to the use, often conflicting between supplying and irrigation, and with regard to aspects of physiographic order, which have ultimately affected a quantitative and qualitative spatial variation of water availability. The present study aimed at, among other aspects, locating the State Program of Support for Participatory Management of Water Resources (surface and underground) at the current law; it was also found various forms of water usage in the basin. In order to achieve these objectives, it was used different procedures relating to the bibliographic, mapping and field surveys. Among other results, it was observed in the basin that there are forms of water usage associated with the consumptives and non-consumptives types presenting variation from the human supplying up to the animal drinking, irrigation, industrial, agriculture, navigation, fishing and recreation. The system of water distribution in the basin has an installed capacity of 180.272m3/day, equivalent to 2.09 m3/s, with an estimated demand for year 2020 around 439,623 m3/day (5.09 m3/s) from which about 66.5% will be needed to human supplying.

Resumo capítulo 1 - Investigações in situ dos efeitos de poluentes mutagênicos (monitoramento ambiental) têm, crescentemente, usado bioindicadores, e os peixes freqüentemente são usados nesses estudos como organismos sentinela. No presente estudo, nós usamos o Teste do Micronúcleo (TMN) em peixes como um indicador biológico in situ de contaminação quimica em duas espécies de peixes de água doce (Astyanax bimaculatus and Hoplias malabaricus). Os peixes foram coletados no Rio Japaratuba (Sergipe, Brasil) em uma área impactada por uma industria petroquímica (Sitios 1 e 2) , a qual descarta indiretamente efluente tratado (água de produção) no rio. Respostas em peixes desses sitios foram comparadas a de peixes de um sítio de referência (Rio Jacarecica – Sergipe,Brasil). Os resultados indicam uma freqüência aumentada de MN em células vermelhas do sangue periférico de A. bimaculatus coletadas nos Sítios 1 e 2, quando comparadas com o respectivo controle negativo (A. bimaculatus coletados do Rio Jacarecica). Os resultados desse estudo indicam que o TMN em peixes é uma tecnica útil para a detecção de contaminates quimicos em ambiente aquático e mostra potencial para o monitoramento in situ da qualidade da água. The study is a survey conducted for the Master of Social Sciences carried out in partnership between the Universidade Tiradentes-UNIT/SE and the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). Being a religious event, we seek to show that the religious parties generally have particular meanings for each nation or region. A sub-bacia do Rio Cotinguiba é uma das principais formadoras da bacia do Rio Sergipe, não só pela sua magnitude, como também pela importância geocconômica da área que atravessa. O seu alto curso, inserido predominantemente no município de Areia Branca/SE, vem sofrendo degradações dc origem antrópica em virtude da devastação acelerada dos seus mananciais com atividades agrícolas e extrativistas que não contemplam as práticas de manejo e conservação ambiental. This work aimed to analyze current changes caused by riverbank’s erosion, as well as to verify the effectiveness of soil bioengineering techniques on the landscape recovery applied to Paramopama River banks. In order to verify landscape’s changes, it analyzed a photographic set produced during the period of 1998-2008, which had been classified according to its degree of anthropization as very high, high and low degree. Species with higher occurrence were those belonging to botanic family of Gramineae. There were many factors to landscape change, erosion was the most important followed by disturbances caused by ducts installation across the river channel. At Paramopama River two different moments could be observed, firstly, a very high degree of anthropization followed by a high degree of anthropization. The objective of this work was to analytically identify river bank erosion control practices at the state of Sergipe, Brazil, adopted by the riverine population or by the governmental actions through civil engineering and also soil bioengineering techniques. The studied sites were composed by the margin of the Lower São Francisco river, Sergipe river and Paramopama river in the Municipalities of Propriá, Aracaju and São Cristóvão, respectively. The riverine population have search to their own solutions through the use of low cost materials. On the other hand riprap has been applied to absorb the impact of water waves. The red mangrove crab, Goniopsis cruentata, influences the recruitment and composition of plant species in the mangrove ecosystem and it is an important fishery resource. Nevertheless, no current management and conservation plans are available for this species for the Brazilian coast. This investigation evaluated the population structure and reproductive biology in populations of G. cruentata under contrasting fishery pressures. The sampling program was carried out in two mangroves, Vaza-Barris and Sergipe River, from January through December 2011. Crabs from both mangroves were randomly collected by a professional fisherman during daytime low tide periods, using a fishing rod baited with pieces of a locally abundant gastropod, Pugilina morio, during 20min/area (catch per unit effort). Monthly measurements of air, sediment surface layer and water temperatures were obtained with a digital thermometer and salinity with an optical refractometer. Both crab populations were compared concerning their abundance, body size, sex ratio, size at onset of sexual maturity and fecundity (FI).
