After identification of a case of extrinsic allergic alveolitis due to exposure to wood dust at a sawmill, all employees at the sawmill where he worked were studied with an occupational, environmental, and symptom questionnaire, spirometry, skin prick tests, and serum specific IgG measurements. Ninety five of current and 14 of 17 ex-sawmill workers were studied. As a basis for comparison, a group of 58 workers from a nearby light engineering factory were also studied. Few women (6) were employed and they were excluded from the analysis. Workers at the sawmill were stratified into high and low exposure groups depending on their place of work. This division was supported both by their subjective assessment of the dustiness of their environment and the results of personal dust samples. There were no significant differences between the three groups in age, height, smoking habits, exposure to other causes of extrinsic allergic alveolitis, forced expiratory volume in one second, forced vital capacity, atopic state, or cutaneous reactivity to moulds. In the high exposure group the prevalence of work related cough and nasal and eye symptoms was higher than in the low exposure and comparison groups. The prevalence of work related wheeze was similar in both the high exposure and comparison groups...

OBJECTIVES: To study whether air contaminants in sawmills can induce acute changes in the upper and lower airways of previously non-exposed subjects. METHODS: Nineteen healthy volunteers were examined to find the concentration of interleukin 6 (IL-6) in nasal lavage fluid and lung function before and after five hour exposure to dusts and fumes generated in a sawmill where timber from Scots pine was sawed. When exposed, the subjects had respirators with and without a particle filter. RESULTS: The median for daily time weighted average concentration of total dust for subjects with respirators without a filter was 0.13 mg/m3, which was significantly higher than the median of 0.04 mg/m3 for subjects who had respirators with a filter. The median for the concentration of IL-6 in the nasal lavage fluid increased after exposure from 0.5 to 5.9 pg/ml in subjects with respirators without a particle filter (P < 0.05). The increase of the concentration of IL-6 was significantly correlated with the dust concentration. A decrease in transfer factor of the lung was significantly correlated with daily time weighted average concentrations of terpenes. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that healthy volunteers, exposed to air contaminants in a sawmill...

The objective of this study was to determine whether paternal occupational exposure to chlorophenol fungicides and their dioxin contaminants is associated with childhood cancer in the offspring of sawmill workers. We used data from 23,829 British Columbian sawmill workers employed for at least 1 continuous year between 1950 and 1985 in 11 sawmills that used chlorophenates. Probabilistic linkage of the sawmill worker cohort to the provincial marriage and birth files produced an offspring cohort of 19,674 children born at least 1 year after the initiation of employment in the period 1952-1988. We then linked the offspring cohort to the British Columbia Cancer Registry. We included all malignancies in cases younger than 20 years of age that appeared on the cancer registry between 1969 and 1993. We calculated standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) using the British Columbia population as a reference. A nested case-control analysis assessed the effects of paternal cumulative exposure and windows of exposure on the risk of developing cancer in the offspring. We identified 40 cases of cancer during 259,919 person-years of follow-up. The all-cancer SIR was 1.0 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.7-1.4]; the SIR for leukemia was 1.0 (CI, 0.5-1.8); and the SIR for brain cancer was 1.3 (CI...

The purpose of this study was to determine the sawmill workers’ knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) in relation to noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 83 workers from 3 factories in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. Questionnaires were distributed to obtain the socio-demography, knowledge, attitude and practice level in relation to noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). The weak areas identified in the knowledge section were treatment aspects (15.5%), signs and symptoms of NIHL (20.2%) and risk factors (31%). As for attitude; the prevention aspects were the lowest (25.3%), followed by risk taking attitude (26.2%), and causes of hearing loss (42.1%). Overall, the practice was not encouraging at all. It is important to have an education program to raise workers’ awareness and to improve their attitude and practices towards noise-induced hearing loss.

Sticky-traps baited continuously with racemic sulcatol (6-methyl-5-hepten-2-01) set out in 5 locations in a commercial sawmill in 1976, captured 42,907 Gnathotrichus sulcatus (LeConte), an estimated 65.1% of the total population. Peak flights occurred in the 1st wk of May and Sept. Highest attack rates on lumber occurred also at these times and for the following 3 wk as attacking beetles apparently set up competitive natural sources of secondary attraction. Major factors associated with higher beetle catches were temperature, mill log inventory, and lumber inventory. Numbers of attacks on lumber were also positively correlated with the sum of the attacks for the previous 3 wk. Percentage suppression of beetles was highest in the warmer summer months when inflight populations were low. Vertical distribution of beetles on traps was directly related to height of the pheromone release system. The suppression traps required less than one man-day/month for maintenance, and offer an effective alternative to the use of conventional insecticides. The mass trapping technique could be readily adapted for dryland log sorting areas to help prevent the build up of pest populations of G. sulcatus.

The control over the products of the sawing of logs is important for the management of the sawmill and also to reduce environmental impacts. The yield and the time study are parameters for the assessment of unfolding in a sawmill. This study aimed to evaluate the yield and the time study of the sawing of Eucalyptus logs during the production of structural parts. This work used ten logs of Eucalyptus grandis from a plantation with 15 years of age, taken from an area of the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA). In the experimental sawmill of UFLA the logs were sawn using a band saw and the planks were resawn in a circular saw. The structural parts followed the dimensions laid down in the NBR 7190 (ASSOCIAÇÃO BRASILEIRA DE NORMAS TÉCNICAS - ABNT, 1997). The parts produced were measured and calculated yield. The times of all stages of the process were obtained using a stopwatch and then analyzed the time actually sawing and the processing time of logs and planks. The average of yield for the production of main parts was 20.9% and secondary part was 22.9%. Average yield of sawing was satisfactory if compared with the values obtained in other studies. The circular saw compared to band saw showed higher percentage of effective time sawing of wood. The effective time of sawing was less than half the total processing time of the logs.; O controle sobre os produtos obtidos no desdobro das toras é importante para a gestão da serraria e também para a redução dos impactos ao ambiente. O rendimento e o estudo de tempo são parâmetros para a avaliação do desdobro em uma serraria. No presente trabalho...

Several methods are employed by the timber industry to try to restrict the flow of products from illegal or unsustainable sources into timber supply chains. The most commonly applied are systems of log marking and associated documentation that accompany the logs. However this system is open to falsification, particularly between the logging concession and the timber mill, where the majority of illegally logged timber enters the supply chain. This paper describes the development of a methodology to track a unique genetic fingerprint for single logs of merbau, Intsia palembanica (Leguminosae), a high-value Indonesian timber species, from logging concession to the mill, where the DNA profile of individual logs is difficult or impossible to falsify. We find that whilst the ability to extract DNA and amplify a PCR product from logs decreases slightly between forest concession (59.2%) and mill (41.9%) samples, that overall enough samples worked across the 14 microsatellite markers to provide an exact genotype match between forest and sawmill samples for 27 out of 32 logs. Furthermore for these 27 samples, the probability that an illegal log with an exact genotype match to forest samples had been substituted was very low (less than 10–5) for 18 samples...

A 34 year old sawmill maintenance engineer developed a dry cough that was associated with widespread wheezes and crackles in his lungs. His symptoms worsened, with work related lethargy, fever, and breathlessness, and the loss of a stone in weight. At that time, while still at work, he had a neutrophil leucocytosis and increased concentration of gamma globulins. When seen subsequently some two months after stopping work, his chest radiograph and lung function tests were normal, but the cells recovered at bronchoalveolar lavage showed an increase in lymphocytes and mast cells, a pattern consistent with extrinsic allergic alveolitis. Serum precipitins were identified to extracts of sawdust, wood chips, and bark from the sawmill, and to eight species of mould grown from these samples. Specific IgG binding inhibition studies suggested that a common epitope present on Trichoderma koningii might be responsible for the cross reactivity of the patient's serum with the wood and fungal extracts. A diagnosis of wood associated extrinsic allergic alveolitis was made and since changing his job the patient has remained well. Wood associated allergic alveolitis has not previously been described in British sawmill workers, but has been reported in Sweden...

This project conducts a market analysis of Pacific Albus and investigates the statistical relationship between timber inputs and lumber outputs at GreenWood Resources’ Upper Columbia Mill. The market analysis was done to gain a better understanding of the Pacific Albus and to identify future opportunities for it to gain market share given its competitiveness with alder, aspen, and other species; both in terms of end-use functionality and price. This study also developed an enhanced product recovery model for Pacific Albus that describes how log measurement variables statistically explain the board feet recovered and the composition of those products. By doing so, it may be possible to estimate recovered lumber volume and value of Pacific Albus trees by taking a few simple measurements.

The aim was to determine the yield of Eucalyptus benthamii and Eucalyptus grandis in the process of the sawing. The methodology involved two diameter classes (20-25 cm and 25.1-30 cm) and two systems sawing (tangential and radial). The yield of sawing was obtained through the relationship between the volume of logs and lumber, being separated into gross yield, no splits, no trimming and liquid. The analysis yield was adopted the Analysis of Variance and Tukey test. The results demonstrated that the system of tangential sawing showed better utilization of raw-material. The treatments consisted of the E. benthamii and tangential system presented the greatest yield reduction due to the removal of parts of the split pieces, while for the loss due to destopo, the percentages found were similar for both species. In the final yield of the process, there was no reduction of yield in lumber with the increase of the diameter of the logs for both species. Keywords: Eucalypt; log end splits; utilization of raw material; sawmill.; O objetivo foi determinar o aproveitamento do Eucalyptus benthamii e do Eucalyptus grandis no processo de desdobro. The objective of this research was to compare conventional and programmed cutting of logs pine at small sawmill. The models have been used for cutting different diametrical classes. The software MaxiTora was employed aiming to optimize logs cutting. For such, 80 logs of Pinus sp had been selected with diameters that varied from 24 cm to 33 cm, gathering four diametrical classes with 20 logs each. In each diametrical class, the logs had been separated in two lots of 10 units, then the first lot was submitted to random cutting and the second lot was submitted to programmed cutting. In relation to the random cutting system, the yield obtained in all the diametrical classes varied from 44.96% to 52.47%, and the general average corresponded to 49.01%. In relation to the programmed cutting system, the yield varied from 49.93% to 55.25% in all the diametrical classes studied, and the general average corresponded to 52.14%. Grading of logs and cutting schedule allowed to increase the sawmill efficiency in at least three percentage points.

The growing demand for wood has resulted in large volumes of wood wastes that are daily released to the soil from the activities of sawmills in South-Western Nigeria. In an attempt to setup a bioremediation model for sawdust, this study therefore aimed at evaluating microbial diversity, and the level of digestive enzymes in the gut of earthworms (Eudrilus eugeniae, Libyodrilus violaceous and Hyperiodrilus africanus) of sawmill origin. Four major sawmills located in Abeokuta (7o9’12” N - 3o19’35” E), namely Lafenwa, Sapon, Isale-Ake and Kotopo sawmills were used for this study. The arboretum of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta was used as control. Gut microbial analysis was carried out using the pour-plate method while digestive enzyme activities in the earthworm guts were done by the spectrophotometric method. Higher microbial counts (28.5±0.1x10³-97.0±0.1x10³cfu for bacteria and 7.0±0.1x10³-96.0±0.1x10³cfu for fungi) and microbial diversity were recorded in the gut of earthworms of the sawmill locations than those of the control site (17.5±0.1x10³cfu for bacteria and 4.5±0.1x10³cfu for fungi). Streptococcus mutans and Proteus spp.were common in the gut of E. eugeniae, and L. violaceous from the study sawmills...
