The behavior of an individual within a social aggregation profoundly influences behavior and physiology of other animals within the aggregation in such a way that these social interactions can enhance reproductive success, survival and fitness. This phenomenon is particularly important during the breeding season when males and female must synchronize their reproductive efforts. We examined whether exposure to conspecific social cues can elevate sex steroid levels, specifically estradiol and androgens, in female túngara frogs (Physalaemus pustulosus). We compared plasma estradiol and androgen concentrations in wild-caught females before and after exposure to either natural mate choruses or random tones. After exposure to mate choruses for 10 consecutive nights, estradiol concentrations were significantly elevated whereas there was no significant elevation in estradiol concentrations in the group of females exposed to random tones for 10 nights. Plasma androgen concentrations were not significantly changed after exposure to either natural mate choruses or random tones for 10 consecutive nights. Social modulation of estradiol concentrations may be important in maintaining a female’s reproductive state while males are chorusing. To our knowledge...

Relationships between genes and social behavior have historically been construed as a one-way street, with genes in control. Recent analyses have challenged this view by discovering broad alterations in the expression of human genes as a function of differing socio-environmental conditions. The emerging field of social genomics has begun to identity the types of genes subject to social regulation, the biological signaling pathways mediating those effects, and the genetic polymorphisms that moderate socio-environmental influences on human gene expression.

Recent analyses have discovered broad alterations in the expression of human genes across different social environments. The emerging field of social genomics has begun to identify the types of genes sensitive to social regulation, the biological signaling pathways mediating these effects, and the genetic polymorphisms that modify their individual impact. The human genome appears to have evolved specific “social programs” to adapt molecular physiology to the changing patterns of threat and opportunity ancestrally associated with changing social conditions. In the context of the immune system, this programming now fosters many of the diseases that dominate public health. The embedding of individual genomes within a broader metagenomic network provides a framework for integrating molecular, physiologic, and social perspectives on human health.

The study of religion is severely handicapped by a lack of adequate cross-national data. Despite the prominence of religion in international events and recent theoretical models pointing to the consequences of regulating religion, cross-national research on religion has been lacking. We strive to fill this void by developing measurement models and indexes for government regulation, government favoritism, and social regulation of religion. The indexes rely on data from an extensive coding of the 2003 International Religious Freedom Report for 196 countries and territories. Using a series of tests to evaluate the new data and indexes, we find that the measures developed are highly reliable and valid. The three indexes will allow researchers and others to measure the government’s subsidy and regulation of religion as well as the restrictions placed on religion by social and cultural forces beyond the state.

Linked to the State and Educational Policies Research Line of the Post-graduation Program in Education of Universidade Federal de Goiás (UFG), the organization of schools in cycles in Goiânia is analyzed in this thesis from the perspective of the processes of regulation of the educational policies undertaken in Brazil, starting mainly in the 1990 s. Based on the analyses of the social regulation carried out on the economy field and the political sociology and having as reference the methodological-theoretical frame developed by Marks and fertilized by Gramsci, it was aimed to understand the constitutional determinations of the organization of the school in cycles in Goiânia and questioned in which way they correspond to the processes of regulation of the educational policies or, in the other hand, they can mean a counterpoint to the hegemonic processes of regulation in progress. The investigation in local extent demanded, in addition to the bibliographic research, a process which involved document analysis, interviewing and applying questionnaires in 15 schools. The data obtained from the questionnaires received statistics treatment through the electronic program SPSS - Statistical Package for The Social Sciences. Taking the organization of the school in cycles as a policy in the strict meaning of the state s action...

The purpose of my research is to look at how members of the public experience the social regulatory activities of the police and the courts. In particular, I am concerned about the experiences of the members of two minority groups—African-Americans and Hispanics. My goal is to explore the implications of my findings for models of policing and court administration. These models focus on finding effective ways to regulate social behaviour.

My argument is that we have a lot to gain by reframing the way we think about the general approach to social regulation that has dominated legal scholarship for several decades. I propose and defend empirically the value of a proactive model of social regulation that is based upon encouraging and maintaining public trust in the character and motives of legal authorities. The public trust in the police and courts central to this model is sustained by process based policing and process oriented problem solving by the courts. Process is the key issue in each case because public trust in these legal authorities is encouraged when they make their decisions through procedures that members of the public view as fair.; no

The South Australian Rann Labor government elected in 2002 became the first in the nation to address ‘social exclusion’ through the implementation of a Social Inclusion Initiative. The increasingly popular term ‘social exclusion’ was first used overseas in the early 1970s to describe serious symptoms of socio-economic disadvantage linked with global economic restructuring. Taking the South Australian policy initiative as a point of departure, this thesis provides a multi-layered analysis of social exclusion discourses and policy approaches, exploring their significance in the context of Australia’s shifting welfare state terrain. In so doing, the thesis seeks to break new ground both at general theory and specific case study levels by utilising a regulation approach (RA) to test the research hypothesis that ‘social inclusion’ policies are reflective of a transitional neoliberal (or, in some instances, Third Way) mode of social regulation which is inadequate to arrest rising socio-economic inequality linked to the collapse of the post-war ‘Fordist-Keynesian’ consensus. The cross-disciplinary regulation approach is a method of inquiry used to analyse spatially and temporally specific shifts in phases of capitalist accumulation and the different policy and institutional arrangements that support accumulation in each phase. The complex and interrelated institutional shifts at the Australian national level are critical to understanding the origins and impact of ‘social inclusion’ policies. Hence the adoption of this type of policy approach at the South Australian state level is considered in a broader national political economic context where the phenomenon of social exclusion is located within national welfare to work reforms. By applying a regulationist lens to examine the global concept of social exclusion in a local and broader national setting...

In this paper we analyze the most likely and the most desirable developments in financial markets and in a broader sense, the most desirable regulation of the financial sector. The purpose of the essay is in fact to analyze the most important issues of financial regulation and to highlight that finding the most desirable solutions are particularly difficult. These difficulties come from purely technical reasons, the multi-dimensionality of the analyzed problems, but also some aspects of the methodology and philosophy under the current methodological approach for financial regulation; En este trabajo se analiza las novedades más probables y más deseables en los mercados financieros y en un sentido más amplio, la regulación más deseable del sector financiero.

This is a book about the ever more complex legal networks of transnational economic governance structures and their legitimacy problems. The book takes up the challenge of the editors' earlier pioneering works which have called for more cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary analysis by scholars of international law, European and international economic law, private international law, international relations theory, and social philosophy to examine the interdependence of multilevel governance in transnational economic, social, environmental, and legal relations. Two complementary strands of theorizing are expounded. One argues that globalization and the universal recognition of human rights are transforming the intergovernmental 'society of states' into a cosmopolitan community of citizens which requires more effective constitutional safeguards for protecting human rights and consumer welfare in the national and international governance and legal regulation of international trade. The second emphasizes the dependence of the functioning of international markets and liberal trade on governance arrangements which respond credibly to safety and environmental concerns of consumers, traders, politicians, and non-governmental actors. Inquiries into the generation of international standards and empirical analysis of legalization practices form part of this agenda. The perspectives and conclusions of the more than 20 contributors from Europe and North America cannot be uniform. But they converge in their search for a constitutional architecture which limits...

This study aims to discuss the work of Eros and Thanatos in the context of social regulation, where the organizational social responsibility is commonly identified as being a management system capable of minimizing the negative effects of capitalism. The fieldwork indicated a fallacy between discourse and practices of responsibility. Qualitative data from three organizations were used and categorized based on the logic of social representations. It has been identified that the organizational social responsibility is in the service of Eros, being a possible way to beat the anguish of organizational death. However, that model is vulnerable to the work of Thanatos. It has been concluded that the perception of the work of death that is noticeable in the institutional dynamics may favor its confrontation and also find ways out to the necrosis in the social tissue which work organizations are also part.; Este estudo objetiva discutir o trabalho de Eros e de Tanatos no contexto de regulação social  na qual a responsabilidade social organizacional é comumente associada a um sistema de gestão capaz de minimizar os efeitos negativos do capitalismo.

This article analyzes the role of municipal public assistance councils in the regulation of civil society organizations classified as social welfare organizations. We draw attention to the importance that these councils have for the operationalization of the more general principles governing the country’s social welfare/public assistance policies. Focusing on the regulatory role that management councils’ take on, we seek to understand, on the one hand, the wider institutional environment to which they belong and, on the other, their power to remodel a particular type of associativism which until very recently was identified and identified itself as philanthropical. This article develops a conceptual perspective of how the society of risk...

This work discusses the concepts of work, production, reproduction and regulation process, in the light of the Marxist political economy. The basic hypothesis, with its origin in the Marxian-theoretical demarche, is the one that the work process (material form) and capital (social form) make up a conceptual unity, constituting analytical error, the automation of one of these spheres. Besides, this conceptual pair assumes totality status just in case it is inserted in the production, reproduction and social regulation movement.

Abstract The article is structured from David Harvey`s interpretation of the nature of contemporary capitalism, particularly his proposal that this nature is essentially predatory. This proposition is confronted and qualified by the theses of financialization expressed in the contribution by François Chesnais. Thereafter it is shown how the discussion of the State...
