Questiona-se aqui a usual primazia do espaço em detrimento do ambiente, feita tanto por parte de arquitetos como de educadores, entendendo a complexidade como um aspecto fundamental no desenvolvimento de projetos ambientais escolares.; Although the discussion on the significance of School Environment for the child development has gained importance, the physical aspects of these environments are still neglected when they are planned. Once basic needs are supplied and security, accessibility and maintenance demands are fulfilled, environments should be developed not as merely backdrops to children interaction...

Background: Poor indoor air quality (IAQ) and psychosocial problems are common in schools worldwide, yet longitudinal research on the issue is scarce. We examined whether the level of or a change in pupil-reported school environment (IAQ, school satisfaction, and bullying) predicts recorded sick leaves among teachers. Methods: Changes in the school environment were assessed using pupil surveys at two time points (2001/02 and 2004/05) in 92 secondary schools in Finland. Variables indicating change were based on median values at baseline. We linked these data to individual-level records of teachers’ (n = 1678) sick leaves in 2001–02 and in 2004–05. Results: Multilevel multinomial logistic regression models adjusted for baseline sick leave and covariates showed a decreased risk for short-term (one to three days) sick leaves among teachers working in schools with good perceived IAQ at both times (OR = 0.6, 95% CI: 0.5-0.9), and for those with a positive change in IAQ (OR = 0.6, 95% CI: 0.4-0.9), compared to teachers in schools where IAQ was constantly poor. Negative changes in pupil school satisfaction (OR = 1.8, 95% CI: 1.1-2.8) and bullying (OR = 1.5, 95% CI: 1.0-2.3) increased the risk for short-term leaves among teachers when compared to teachers in schools where the level of satisfaction and bullying had remained stable. School environment factors were not associated with long-term sick leaves. Conclusions: Good and improved IAQ are associated with decreased teacher absenteeism. While pupil-related psychosocial factors also contribute to sick leaves...

non-peer-reviewed; Children with autism can have difficulty demonstrating appropriate behaviour as a result of their diagnosis, causing frustration to both themselves and their care-givers. Despite growing knowledge of behavioural difficulties associated with autism, relatively little is understood about how these behaviours transfer across settings. This study aimed to investigate whether parents identified a difference in their children’s’ behaviour between the school and home setting, and to explore potential variables reported. A questionnaire was drawn up to address the purpose of this study and completed by parents of children with autism. Results found that the higher proportion of participants (52%) believed their child behaved better in the school environment, 44% suggested their child behaved the same in both these environments and only 4% indicated behaviour to be better in the home environment. Variables including; parents’ marital status, child’s age of diagnosis, type of school and use of visual schedules are all examined. This study further highlights the importance of examining the client’s context as part of the occupational therapy process and understanding the client in his/her multiple environments both when assessing and providing interventions. Further research should take a qualitative form to gain a more comprehensive insight into the behaviour of these children across settings.

Background: Schools are important settings for the promotion of a healthy diet and sufficient physical activity and thus overweight prevention. Objective: To assess differences in school nutrition environment and body mass index (BMI) in primary schools between and within 12 European countries. Methods: Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) European Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative (COSI) were used (1831 and 2045 schools in 2007/2008 and 2009/2010, respectively). School personnel provided information on 18 school environmental characteristics on nutrition and physical activity. A school nutrition environment score was calculated using five nutrition-related characteristics whereby higher scores correspond to higher support for a healthy school nutrition environment. Trained field workers measured children’s weight and height; BMI-for-age (BMI/A) Z-scores were computed using the 2007 WHO growth reference and, for each school, the mean of the children’s BMI/A Z-scores was calculated. Results: Large between-country differences were found in the availability of food items on the premises (e.g., fresh fruit could be obtained in 12%95% of schools) and school nutrition environment scores (range: 0.300.93). Low-score countries (Bulgaria...

Appendix E videotape located at DKL-119 call number VHS 5000064; Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited; This thesis addresses the problem that virtual environments (VE's) do not possess a practical, intuitive, and comfortable interface that allows a user to control a virtual human's movements in real-time. Such a device would give the user the feeling of being immersed in the virtual world, greatly expanding the usability of today's virtual environments. The approach was to develop an interface for the upper body, since it is through this part of users' anatomy that they interact most with their environment. Lower body motion can be more easily scripted. Implementation includes construction of a kinematic model of the upper body. The model is then manipulated in real-time with inputs from electromagnetic motion tracking sensors places on the user. Research resulted in an interface that is easy to use and allows its user limited interaction with a VE. The device takes approximately one sixth the time to don and calibrate as do mechanical interfaces with similar capability. It tracks thirteen degrees of freedom. Upper body position is tracked, allowing the users to move through the VE. Users can orient their upper body and control the movements of one arm. Uncorrected position data from two trackers was used to generate clavicle joint angles. Difficulty in controlling figure motion indicates that the sensors used lack sufficient registration for this purpose. Therefore...

MBA Professional Report; The Planning, Programming and Budgeting (PPB) system was introduced in the department of Defense (DoD) in the 1960's to link strategies to programs that best satisfy the Nation's policy objectives and fit within budget constraints. Over the past 45 years, modifications were made to the PPB system, and it is now referred to as the Planning, Programming, Budgeting and Execution (PPBE) system, but the original intent of PPB remains intact. Traditionally, wars were funded initially with emergency supplemental funding until the cost of the war could be added into the baseline budget process. The Global War on Terror (GWOT), now in its six year, continues to be funded outside the PPBE process through supplemental appropriations. This project identifies and examines the key factors related to this deviation from the PPBE process. The research analyzes the domestic environment in which PPB was originally implemented and the post 9/11 environment in which it currently exists. A comparative analysis is used to determine the reasons for the increased use of supplementals for baseline and GWOT funding in the last six years. The project also identifies the implications of continued deviation from the PPBE process utilizing parallel budgeting processes.

MBA Professional Report; The motivation for using Flight Training Synthetic Environment Technology (FTSET) in military aviation is to create a cost-efficient and a risk-managed training environment. However, deciding on the appropriate mix of synthetic versus actual flight training remains a great unresolved issue. Further, FTSET usage and its adoption level may vary across the aviation community and flight training curricula. TUAA has employed FTSET in helicopter flight training since 1990. Since then, it has exhibited three different FTSET Support Usage patterns, which include an initial phase of lower support rates until 1997, a substantial increase phase from 1997-2001, and a leveling-off phase, where growth stagnated, from 2001-2006. We hypothesize that these sequential phasing can be explained in terms of the organizational culture in which the FTSET is employed, organizational changes that favor FTSET usage and increasing FTSET expertise in the usage, and the current FTSET's limited technical capability and its sole support for one type of helicopter. To test our hypotheses we develop a systems dynamics model of the FTSET adoption process (AP) that has three interrelated sectors: Technology Improvement and Acquisition, Technology Adoption...

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.; The history of the Department of Defense (DOD) information system technical infrastructure includes a collection of stovepipe, single purpose systems. Recently, the DOD has developed initiatives to help promote the development of common target architectures to which DOD information systems can migrate, evolve, and interoperate. The DOD's Technical Architecture Framework for Information Managers (TAFIM) provide system developers guidance and methodologies for developing standard architectures. The Defense Information Infrastructure (DII) Common Operating Environment (COE) is a development architecture based on the ideas of TAFIM, and provides a framework for designing and building military information systems. This thesis applies the objectives presented in TAFIM in order to develop an approach for determining which network operating system (NOS) would best facilitate implementations of the DII COE. By first examining the evolution of Navy information systems, and the development of the DII COE, this thesis provides a detailed description of requirements placed on a NOS by a DOD DII COE based information system. These requirements are the used to help understand how TAFIM's objectives apply to NOSs. Two prevalent NOSs...

CHDS State/Local; There is a lack of attention towards the process of recovery in U.S. schools despite their vulnerability to natural and intentional threats with the potential of creating mass casualties. By promoting resilience as a component of recovery as similarly modeled in Israel and the UK, the U.S. can empower children and the at-large community, enabling a quicker recovery. Case studies from past mass casualty incidents from a variety of threat mechanisms involving schools were analyzed to assess (1) time criticality, (2) lack of information sharing, (3) family reunification, (4) lockdown considerations, and (5) first responder considerations. Regardless of threat mechanism, most variables will factor in a school's ability to recover, including the reality that the longer the exposure to the trauma, the greater the psychosocial impact and greater difficulty in recovery. School administrators and first responders, primarily from public health and law enforcement, should collaborate on efforts in the pre-event phase to mitigate both physical and psychological impacts from trauma. The success of fire prevention education has promoted resilience for decades. Similar strategies should focus on all hazards and the term "resilience" should become a natural term in the American lexicon.; Walled Lake (MI) Fire Department author (civilian).

This pilot study developed a climate instrument which was administered in a sample of high schools in one board of education. Several tests were conducted i n order to determine the reliability and internal consistency of the instrument . The ability of the instrument to identify the demographic differences of school and gender was also tested. The relationship between leadership styles and an effective use of authority in creating a productive and rewarding work environment was the f ocus of t his study. Attitudes to leadership and perceived school morale were investigated in a demographic study, a climate survey, as well as a body of related literature. In light of the empirical research, an attempt was made to determine the extent to which the authority figure's behaviour and adopted leadership style contributed to a positive school climate : one in which t eachers were motivated to achieve to t he best of their abilities by way of their commitment and service. The tone of authority assumed by t he leader not only shapes the mood of the school environment but ultimately determines the efficiency and morale of t he teaching staff.
