The growth of the species of ju??ara palm Tree Euterpe edulis (Mart.) and royal palm Roystonea regia (Kunth) has no record of studies focusing on south region of Rio Grande do Sul State. It is necessary to identify a system that ensures the proper growth of plants of these species. In this context, these works provide alternatives for producing seedlings with adaptability for family farms of southern half of Rio Grande do Sul. The effect of different substrates on initial growth of the seedlings and the appropriate level of shading for their initial development were determined. The seedlings were grown on Esta????o Experimental Cascata, Embrapa Clima Temperado. The experiments reported in Chapters I determine the effect of different substrates. The seedlings grew from seeds originated in a family farm located in the municipalities of Tabai and Pelotas, RS. A combination of different substrates was used, represented by the treatments T1 - Plantmax??, T2 - forest soil, T3 - clayey soil, T4 - forest soil:clayey soil 1:1 (v:v), T5 - forest soil:carbonized rice husk 3:1 (v:v), T6 - forest soil:carbonized rice husk 1:1 (v:v), T7 - forest soil:rice husk in natura 1:1 (v:v), T8 - clayey soil:carbonized rice husk 3:1 (v:v), T9 - clayey soil:carbonized rice husk 1:1 (v:v)...

This paper examines the regulation of safe design and planning of construction works. Eliminating and controlling risks to health and safety "at the source", as early as possible in the life cycle of work and workplaces, is a well recognised strategy for preventing or minimising occupational fatalities, injuries and disease. A commitment to "eliminate hazards at the design stage" is one of five priorities expressed in The National OHS Strategy 2002–2012, endorsed by the Australian Workplace Relations Ministers’ Council in May 2002 ..... As well as designers, those initiating or procuring construction works also influence OHS outcomes through the design features, timeframes, financial aspects and other requirements they specify or impose. This can be a positive influence, encouraging those responsible for design and construction to address OHS matters. Conversely, tight schedules or budgetary constraints may make it impossible to address OHS effectively. Other upstream factors impacting on OHS include poorly considered architectural options, poor organisation and planning, poor selection and coordination of the multiple contractors engaged, and poor coordination and cooperation between the different parties involved in the respective phases of design and planning...

This article has been accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society © 2010 RAS © 2010 The Authors Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society. All rights reserved.; Using analytical models and cosmological N-body simulations, we study the free-free radio emission from ionized gas in clusters and groups of galaxies. The results obtained with the simulations are compared with analytical predictions based on the mass function and scaling relations. Earlier works based on analytical models have shown that the average free-free signal from small haloes (galaxies) during and after the reionization time could be detected with future experiments as a distortion of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) spectrum at low frequencies (ν < 5 GHz). We focus on the period after the reionization time (from redshift z= 0 to 7) and on haloes that are more massive than in previous works (groups and clusters). We show how the average signal from haloes with M > 10 13 h -1 M Ȯ is less than 10 per cent the signal from the more abundant and colder smaller mass haloes. However, the individual signal from the massive haloes could be detected with future experiments opening the door for a new window to study the intracluster medium

ABSTRACT: Everyday objects depicted in painting are key elements for establishing the lifestyles of the society in the Golden Age. The paintings that belong to the Royal Collection, guarded in Prado National Museum, constitute clear illustrative examples of that historical context. In addition, they are also a sign of the pictorial tastes of Philip II, Philip III and Philip IV - monarchs who carried out a policy of works of art acquisition and the promotion of the best artists from the 16th and 17th centuries. In these paintings there are religious, historical, mythological and genre scenes, providing a graphical view of daily life, social classes, trades and ways of leisure. In the present study we will find different ways of representation according to the artistic school to which those works belong. The Italian model of representation was led by the Bassano family painting, and in the Nordic painting model, still lifes and vases will be basic. The study done on each specific element that appears in the paintings allows you to draw general conclusions for a conceptual reflection on art and society in the European Golden Age.; Grado en Historia

Scene with men playing golf while spectators and caddies look on. The setting is a smooth rolled rectangular lawn with a sandpit on the right, amid low grassy hills and trees. The trees include pines and Lombardy poplars with in the background a growth of eucalypts. As early as 1913, Director General of Works, Colonel Percy Owen suggested the establishment of a golf course near what is now the city centre. When that land was taken over by a new workmen's camp in 1922, the golfers moved to Acton where they shared the site with the racecourse. In 1926 the Federal Capital Commission constructed a new golf course at Acton on the banks of the Molonglo River and in 1933 the Club was granted royal status by King George V. With the imminent formation of Lake Burley Griffin by damming the Molonglo, the Royal Canberra Golf Club moved to its present site at Westbourne Woods in Yarralumla. This photograph is from an album that was held at the London office of the Australian National University over the period 1949 to 1952.

This article concerns the use of rhetorical strategies in the natural historical and anatomical works of the seventeenth-century Royal Society. Choosing representative works, it argues that naturalists such as Nehemiah Grew, John Ray and the neuroanatomist Thomas Willis used the rhetorical device known as ‘comparison’ to make their descriptions of natural things vivid. By turning to contemporary works of neurology such as Willis's Cerebri Anatome and contemporary rhetorical works inspired by other such descriptions of the brain and nerves, it is argued that the effects of these strategies were taken to be wide-ranging. Contemporaries understood the effects of rhetoric in terms inflected by anatomical and medical discourse—the brain was physically altered by powerful sense impressions such as those of rhetoric. I suggest that the rhetoric of natural history could have been understood in the same way and that natural history and anatomy might therefore have been understood to cultivate the mind, improving its capacity for moral judgements as well as giving it knowledge of nature.

The medieval Alcázar (fortress) of Madrid was transformed into the residential palace of the Austriandynasty in Spain from the reign of Charles I through that of Charles II. On Christmas Eve 1734, duringthe reign of the Bourbon king Philip V...
