A multi-criteria approach for the design and evaluation of demand responsive transport (DRT) services

Demand responsive transport services are nowadays an established and recognized way to provide better social inclusion to non-urban, low population density areas. The concept has its origins in the 70´s in the USA, but just recently the advances in technology made this type of service more economically attractive. Therefore is of no surprise that this kind of transportation is starting to be a serious option in several regions across Europe. The European Commission has been promoting projects to study and implement DRT services. One of these projects, MASCARA (deMand responsive trAnsport service for increasing Social Cohesion in urbAn/Rural Areas), involved a team from the Engineering School of the University of Porto, with the participation of the author. The MASCARA project was designed to promote the cooperation between several regions in Europe to share knowledge about DRT services, evaluating DRT pilots and DRT feasibility studies. This dissertation focus on the design of a framework to help this evaluation. The work resulted in combining two known multi-criteria methodologies, namely AHP and TOPSIS. Albeit these methods were designed to help choosing (ranking) between two or more possible scenarios, the proposed framework is able to evaluate and score one scenario situations. This work can be viewed as having two parts: the first one (from chapter 1 to chapter 4) deals with the design of the framework and methodology. From chapter 5 onwards the practical application is adressed. The author work was focused on the design and software implementation of the evaluation framework.

The provision of traditional public transport services in rural areas have shown to be very inefficient and ineffective. In fact, rural areas are naturally categorized by low levels of population density leading to complex demand patterns (low levels and high spatial and temporal dispersion), which leads to low levels of service of conventional transport services (low frequencies, usage of old vehicles, etc). Demand Responsive Transport systems have been seen as an effective alternative solution already adopted in several countries. There are however some issues concerning DRT costs and benefits that still have to be addressed. In this research work an integrated analysis incorporating both internal and external costs is proposed aiming to support decision makers investigating the impacts and performance measures related to the adoption of a flexible transportation system solution. Additionally, DRT systems are highly dependent on the correct calibration of some organizational and functional parameters. Rural areas are becoming more desert from day to day, leading to complex dispersed and scarce demand patterns for public transport. As a consequence, conventional transport services are becoming less frequent, reducing levels of service (e.g., low occupancy rates, usage of old vehicles). With rigid predefined routes and schedules, they are inappropriate to operate in such environments. Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) systems have been seen as an interesting alternative solution, providing flexible transport services to meet trip requests. This solution has already been adopted in several countries as a way to increase user’s mobility and mitigate social exclusion. There are however some issues concerning DRT scheme design and evaluation requiring further developments. Namely, there is still a lack of adequate tools to support some of the strategic and tactic level decisions that must be made at the design phase. In this research, we propose an Integrated Decision Support System (IDSS) and general action methodology that will allow achieving better planning decisions and allowing the evaluation of alternative scheme designs prior to its implementation. The IDSS and methodology are based on an event-driven simulation framework which emulates real-world customers’ behavior and vehicles movements. The paper will concentrate its analysis on this framework. Mediterranean vernacular architecture was developed not only with respect to environmental and climatic factors but also with respect to culture, traditional construction materials and morphology. Despite the far distance between Portugal and Egypt, it was possible to find similar vernacular strategies under the influence of the Mediterranean climate and both Roman and Arab cultures. The paper adopted an explanatory qualitative analysis and comparative synthesis methods for vernacular passive and climatic responsive strategies for two regions. Covering from site planning, building design till building materials used through considering topography, resources, historic and cultural aspects. The outcomes of this research allow for understanding how different passive solar strategies and the use of natural energy sources can contribute to achieve appropriate indoor comfort conditions for contemporary practice. The paper draws a set of recommendations for more in-depth quantitative survey and energy efficiency measurements in Mediterranean climate.

Transportation planners, analysts and decision-makers usually make use of simulation tools in order to accurately predict the performance of new practices and policies before their implementation. Additionally, most of them, recently introduced new auxiliary Business Intelligence decision support tools in order to transform their available huge amount of real operating data into timely and accurate information for their decisions. However, although both of those types of automated decision support are valuable, very few attempts were already made by researchers to integrate them into a unified tool. This paper proposes a general conceptual framework for a strategic and tactical decision support system that integrates both of these technologies, simulation and Business Intelligence, in order to enhance the overall practical interest for its usage by taking advantage of the foreseen synergy of the integration. This approach is then extended and illustrated to the case of demand responsive transport (DRT) systems. DRT systems provide transport on demand for users, using flexible schedules and routes to satisfy their travel needs. Miniaturization and commercialization of integrated microfluidic systems has had great success with the development of a wide variety of techniques in microfabrication, since they allowed their construction at a low cost and by following simple step-series procedures. However, one of the major challenges in the design of microfluidic systems is to achieve control of flow and delivery of different chemical reagents. This feature is especially important when using microfluidic systems in the development of cell culture systems, the construction of labs on a chip and the fabrication and design of chemical microreactors. Spatiotemporal control of the microenvironment in microfluidic devices has been only partially achieved by incorporating actuator parts (mechanical and non-mechanical) within these devices; nevertheless, recently there has been enormous progress due to advances in the materials sciences, and the development of novel polymeric "intelligent" materials. These materials have proved to be excellent candidates in the construction of non-mechanical actuators in the form of environmentally responsive valves. peer-reviewed; This thesis examines interactive sonification, in particular the design, implementation and evaluation of user interface components using sound. It consists of a series of design interventions and explorations, including preliminary empirical investigations, showing features of this space. A novel search method and tool for finding sound files was created. The Sonic Browser utilised the human ability to listen to multiple simultaneous sounds, and facilitated users to switch attention between the sounds while navigating a virtual soundscape. The notion of sound object models, based on physical modelling, or physics-inspired modelling, was developed and explored. The sound object model approach can be used for more responsive and expressive user interfaces based on sound. A method for measuring causal uncertainty in listening tests was improved and modified to also facilitate the design of user interface metaphors based on short narratives provided by participants in listening tests. This Practice Based Research PhD concerns how Responsive Environments may be created to evoke environmental responsibility. As a diverse constellation of practices within Interactive Art, participation, interactivity and responsivity form the poles of Artist-Artwork-Audience relations in Responsive Environments. Within these artforms, responsibility may be evoked to the physical environment of the artwork itself and/or in the social responsibility arising from the interaction between artist, artwork and audience. This study is conducted in two interrelated domains: a dissertation and my solo and collaborative creation of a suite of artworks. Dissertation and artworks form a combined exploratory journey through questions arising from and refined by practice. Both explore context- and content-appropriate approaches for evoking environmental responsibility according to the relationship between an artworks’ responsivity and the responsibility thus created for audiences. Stimuli-responsive polymer materials can change their structure and physical properties drastically on external signals like a change in temperature, solvent properties (pH, ionic strength), the magnetic or electrical field etc. Such "smart" polymer materials play an important role in various fields such as biology, medicine, and soft materials. However, it is a great challenge to investigate such "smart" polymer materials due to highly inhomogeneous structure at the molecular scale and the complex interactions. In this thesis, we have systematically studied three common types of stimuli-responsive polymer brushes such as temperature responsive polymer brushes, copolymer brushes, and mixed polymer brushes by using classical density functional theory. We find a surface outer layer switch for both copolymer brushes and mixed polymer brushes with a selective solvent. Without using any temperature-dependent parameter, our theory successfully captures the lower critical solution temperature behavior of the associating polymer brushes. Related parameters such as molecular weight, grafting density, and solvent properties that affect the phase behavior of these stimuli-responsive polymer brushes have been also investigated. This thesis reports the preparation of novel multi-responsive and multiply stimulable triblock copolymers. The resultant polymers were used to coat cotton fabrics and glass to render them amphiphobic. Further, a method was developed for the preparation of poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PEG-b-PHEMA) via anionic polymerization. The multi-responsive copolymer refers to poly(ethylene glycol)-orthonitrobenzyl-poly[2-(perfluorooctyl)ethyl methacrylate)-block-poly(2-cinnamoloxyethyl methacrylate) (PEG-ONB-PFOEMA-b-PCEMA, or P1). P1 was synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of FOEMA and a precursory monomer of CEMA using a PEG macroinitiator. The copolymer was multi-responsive or dual light-responsive because the ONB junction cleaves and PCEMA block becomes crosslinked upon UV photolysis. The multiply stimulable copolymers are a series of poly(ethylene glycol)-disulfide-poly[2-(perfluorooctyl)ethyl methacrylate)-block-poly(2-cinnamoloxyethyl methacrylate) (PEG-S2-PFOEMA-b-PCEMA) copolymers. It has become more and more important to offer solid user experiences to an increasing number of contexts. Responsive Web Design offers a set of tools to support the creation of web pages that adapt to any screen size. We use fluid grids, flexible images and media queries to adapt web pages regardless of the device's screen dimensions. Hoping to contribute with new resources to the responsive design area, this dissertation describes how a tool was developed which allows web sites' navigation to automatically adapt, according to different patterns. The main goal is to make designers' and developers' work easier by providing adaptive menus that adjust to the screen size. However, different use contexts cannot be limited to the screen size. Thinking on the specific case of mobile devices, which are with us wherever we go, different connectivity conditions (from strong wireless networks to limited 3G connections) may have an impact on the user experience. Network thinking has opened up new research fields for the understanding of the city form. Cities are not completely predicable and they are much more about self-organized networks than about rational top-down planning and design. Self-organization is a property of complex open systems and the city is not an exception. Urban development and regeneration requires new creative responses bottom-up based approaches. However a theory which creates a framework for examining self-organized cities was unavailable until recently. Using complexity theories and network thinking, the design of cities should start within an entirely new field, emerging in response to major changes in society. Also the understanding of the concepts of scale-free networks, self-similarity structures, and the process of unfolding can be utilized to understand the cities’ form and to predict and design efficiently new developments. Opportunistic urban design, invites us to consider innovative urban design solutions that respond to a specific context. This abstract focuses on the discussion of these topics in a research project that is being developed on the city of Lisbon considering the cross-referencing of its natural morphology with the city’s street movement which generates a self-organized network composed by links (streets) and nodes (plazas). The final aim is to define a pedestrian network informed by the understanding of patterns of public life which enable a public space to become a successful place. Based on the fact that architecture is, among other things, the crystallization of a mediation among design intentions (function), meaning and contextual constraints (performance), we as designers are obligated to produce morphologically flexible & adaptive design solutions; both during the design process and as a final outcome. In that sense this thesis is an open ended exploration of embedding rational adaptability to object design through computational tools. This thesis will speculate on the advantages of thinking architecture in terms of "adaptation" in an action-reaction fashion, evolving from the seed idea of "motion" in architecture but rather pushing and exploring the potential of digitally designed responsive buildings and the dissection of its methodological approach. Empirically, it will look into some of nature's responsive designs, arguing that buildings can be conceptualized as adaptable living organisms. With the increasing need for tactile feedback in Human Computer Interfaces used in robotics, medical, and mobile devices, there has been an increasing interest in the design of tactile sensors, displays, and complete haptic systems to transfer tactile information to users. These systems have improved users ability to work with remote tools or virtual environments, from enhancing the accuracy of tools like robotic surgery to improving user experiences in virtual reality systems. Despite many advances, the potential of these technologies to provide augmented or realistic sensations of touch is limited in part by the lack of understanding the complex mechanisms involved in the human perception of touch. To improve the understanding of tactile physiology, this work begins the design of a biophysically accurate simulation model of the receptor cell responsive to high frequency vibration, the Pacinian corpuscle. This receptor plays a key role in the fine control of tools and is a common target for vibrotactile haptic displays. The model incorporates computational and theoretical principles of the Pacinian corpuscles biophysics, which have been developed in past studies, to simulate its electrical response to mechanical, thermal and electrical stimuli. The accuracy and flaws of the model are demonstrated through comparisons with published physiological data. Experiments are also proposed to show how the simulation model can be used to quantitatively compare the results of different tactile displays and different external environments in order to improve the design of modern haptic systems.

Para isso recorreu-se a uma contextualização da web e interface gráfica de forma a compreender a relação existente entre os meios gráficos e os diferentes dispositivos electrónicos que os alojam. Permitindo assim esclarecer o modo como as circunstâncias condicionam o caráter dos ícones. Assim, o presente projecto apresenta uma série de experimentações visuais focadas em ícones responsivos, com diferentes propriedades e características e com o objetivo de delinear as suas limitações e potenciais em relação às propriedades flexíveis da web. A adoção de novas tecnologias no processo de projeto tem desempenhado um papel fundamental na Arquitetura contemporânea. Isso tem instigado os professores a buscar conhecer os processos cognitivos envolvidos na aprendizagem de projeto. Este artigo é um estudo de caso da disciplina Responsive Architecture, lecionada pela arquiteta Anne Save de Beaurecueil na Unicamp. A disciplina inclui uma intensa utilização de meios computacionais de geração, representação e modelagem do projeto. O objetivo deste artigo é descrever o método utilizado nessa disciplina, a partir da observação das atividades, contextualizando-o no cenário das novas práticas arquitetônicas e de seu impacto no ensino, em escolas de excelência internacional.
