The present work was a consequence of the investigation of one problem: Do teachers that assume positions of administration in universities are prepared previously for that? How? Why? About sixteen teachers were heard through well designed interviews...

In this paper we would like to present the second phase of a Network Collaborative Project between medical libraries belonging to different institutions, located in different geographical areas and with different aims, objectives and interests (some of them focusing on research and teaching and other on medical practice). The main goal of this project from its conception has been developing an open, flexible, adaptive medical library, promoted by the community of participants, with the ultimate aim of supporting higher education, research and clinical practice or care, as well as of serving as a tool for the professionals working at the libraries. The platform of choice for us is NETVIBES. To achieve greater integration and effectiveness of the services we have conducted a review of the platform and have integrated two tools that we believe will facilitate the discovery and dissemination of scientific information in our area of expertise. They are two of the social references manager with more projection: CiteUlike and Connotea As often happens in social web services, online references manager are becoming cost-effective solutions that are simple, and powerful to collect large sets of metadata resulting from scientific collaboration. These are isolated data on interest...

Facilitating low level human supervisory control of mission management is highly challenging because of concerns regarding system stability and performance. Previous implementations of mission managers based on C. S. Draper Laboratory?s All-Domain Execution and Planning Technology (ADEPT) are based on an architecture that can be verified to act deterministically with scripted human interaction opportunities. This thesis describes the Human Interactive Mission Manager (HIMM), a general software architecture to facilitate human supervisory control level of interaction based on ADEPT. The HIMM provides operator insight and mission designer interaction mechanisms. These features provide interaction in a controlled but asynchronous way as a baseline service of the HIMM system. The design separates the information used by the operator from the data used by the mission manager so that the addition of asynchronous human interaction will not adversely affect normal execution. To explore the interaction mechanisms and exercise the system, the software was applied to a space domain application. This prototype system facilitates asynchronous input from a human operator to the mission manager.; by Jason M. Furtado.; Thesis (M. Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology...

The Front Office Manager: Key to Hotel Communications is a written study by Denney G. Rutherford, Department of Hotel and Restaurant Administration, College of Business and Economics at Washington State University. In it he initially observes, “Since the front office manager is usually viewed as the key to the efficient and orderly operation of a hotel, the author has researched the job and activities of this individual in an attempt to provide data about an area which he says was "intuitively known" but never "empirically explored." “Current literature implies that the activities of the front office are so important to the daily operations of the hotel that it occupies a preeminent position among other departments,” Rutherford says. He also references, Gray and Liguori, who describe the front office as: “the nerve center of the hote1,” echoing an early work by Heldenbrand indicating that it “becomes a sort of listening post for management.” The quotes are cited. The primary stage of the article relies on a seven-page, two-part questionnaire, which was used to collect data regarding the FOM – front office manager - position. Even though the position is considered a crucial one, it seems there is a significant lack of pragmatic data regarding it. Rutherford graphs the studies. Good communication skills are imperative. “Other recent research has suggested that the skills of effective communication are among the most vital a manager at any level can bring to his/her endeavors in the service industries...

This paper describes the experience of the Library Virginie Buff D'Apice of FMVZ/ USP on the training in the use of Endnote software and its applicability for their users; also aims to demonstrate the potential use of this tool to normalize academic and scientific papers. In this thesis, we address the problem of resource allocation in wireless cellular networks carrying elastic data traffic. A recent approach to the study of large scale engineering systems, such as communication networks, has been to apply fundamental economic principles to understand how resources can be efficiently allocated in a system despite the competing interests and selfish behavior of the users. The most common approach has been to assume that each user behaves selfishly according to a payoff function, which is the difference between his utility derived from the resources he is allocated, and the price charged by the network's manager. The network manager can influence user behavior through the price, and thereby improve the system's efficiency. While extensive analysis along these lines has been carried out for wireline networks (see, for example, [10], [7], [23], [29], [21]), the wireless environment poses a host of unique challenges. Another recent line of research for wireline networks seeks to better understand how the economic realities of data networks can impact the system's efficiency. In particular, authors have considered the case where the network manager sets prices in order to maximize profits rather than achieve efficient resource allocation; see [1] and references therein.; (cont.) Experibase is an experimental database that supports the storage of data from leading biological experiment techniques. Experibase ontology was extended to include a robust representation of microarray data, a leading experimental technique. The microarray submission system takes advantage of Experibase's new microarray storage capabilities by allowing biologist to submit microarray data to Experibase using an application that they are already familiar with. The transformation of data from the submitted format to a format suitable for Experibase takes place without the submitter's knowledge, reducing the need for an Experibase specific submission application.; by Aidan Rawle Downes.; Thesis (M. Researchers and students gather a wealth of information from the Internet. With increasingly affordable large hard disk spaces, much content can be archived in the computer for future reference. However, the only means for organizing this information on today's machines is the folder system. Information on a topic may be spread over many folders. This provides for poor content navigation and retrieval. This thesis describes how the concept of keyword-based indexing can be applied towards navigation of electronic content. The idea is implemented in the form of a software solution - Desktop Content Manager. The information on keywords and content are stored and represented in a manner facilitating automatic hyper linking of related information providing immediate access. The software was tested with sample content extracted from different sources and the scalability and limitations of the suggested approach identified. The findings are used to define further work in this area.; by Deepak Ravichandran.; Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, 2004.; Includes bibliographical references (p. 65-66).

Data is being generated at an enormous rate, due to online activities and use of resources related to computing. To access and handle such enormous amount of data spread, dis- tributed systems is an efficient mechanism. One such widely used distributed filesystem is Hadoop distributed filesystem (HDFS). HDFS follows a cluster approach in order to store huge amounts of data, it is scalable and works on low commodity. It uses MapRe- duce framework to perform analysis and carry computations parallely on these large data sets. Hadoop follows the master/slave architecture decoupling system metadata and appli- cation data where metadata is stored on dedicated server NameNode and application data on DataNodes. In this thesis work, study was performed on Hadoop Architecture, behaviour of filesys- tem and MapReduce in detail and concluded that processing of MapReduce is slow which was further confirmed by initial analysis and experiments performed on default Hadoop configuration. It is known that accessing data from cache is much faster as compared to disk access. Collaborative caching is one such mechanism in which the cache distributed over the clients or dedicated servers or storage devices form a single cache to serve the re- quests. This mechanism helps in improving the performance...

The study investigated the semantic structure of the Image of the Well Succeeded Executive and the question of the position of the Corporeality in this one. A questionnaire with open and closed questions was applied to undergraduate students in Business Administration at three moments of the formation, when it analyzed for the present study the question “Which are the characteristics that an executive needs to have to guarantee his professional success?”. The results were analyzed through content analysis and to nonparametric and multidimensional quantitative techniques (Structure of Similarity Analysis and External Variables as Points in SSA) and interpreted for contributions of the Symbolic Interactionism, Social Construcionism and Facet Theory. The polar structure formed by six facets (Agency, Bond, Cognition, Creativity, Individualism and Competences) and the location in the projection of the extern variable of three “moments of formation” suggest a differentiated process of individualization of the image of the Executive along the university course, with a growth of signification of connected aspects his personality and corporeality, besides extinguishment of ethical and bond references.; O estudo investigou a estrutura semântica da imagem do executivo bem sucedido e a questão da posição da corporeidade nessa imagem. Many scholars have regarded the parable of the shrewd manager (Lk 16:1-8) as the most puzzling of all parables as Jesus seems to use the unrighteous actions of a dishonest (worldly) manager as a model for emulation by others. The unease associated with this understanding was managed in part by focusing almost exclusively on the 'shrewdness' of the dishonest manager. In this interpretation, it is not his unjust behaviour that is to be imitated but his wise and intelligent actions. This interpretation has led to a divergence of applications regarding the 'property' that was entrusted to him. The author, however, argues that, in the context of the historical Jesus, the entrusted property in the parable references first and foremost the Torah entrusted to God's people and that the manager mirrors the life of Jesus, who was 'accused' by the religious leaders of being unjust. Despite being threatened, he continued unabatedly to scatter God's mercy, epitomised by the reduction of debt and symbolising the dawning of God's Kingdom. The manager is therefore not a negative figure but a positive (diaphorical) example of what it means to be a faithful manager of God in the light of adversary and opposition.
