The Douleur Neuropathique 4 (DN4) questionnaire was developed by the French Neuropathic Pain Group and is a simple and objective tool, with the ability to distinguish nociceptive from neuropathic pain. The purpose of this work was to validate the DN4 questionnaire in the Portuguese language in order to allow its use in clinical and research settings. A double-blind, accuracy study was conducted, consisting of translation, back-translation, literal evaluation, semantic equivalence, and communication with the target population. The Portuguese version of the questionnaire was applied in a sample of 101 patients with neuropathic (N = 42) or nociceptive pain (N = 59), ranked according to medical diagnosis. The reproducibility, reliability and validity of the instrument were analyzed, and showed a high diagnostic power for this version of the DN4 questionnaire. The Portuguese version of the DN4 questionnaire presented good validity and reliability, allowing it to identify neuropathic pain and neuropathic characteristics of mixed pain syndromes. Perspective: This article presents the first validated neuropathic pain questionnaire in the Portuguese language and represents a useful tool in the assessment of neuropathic pain both in the clinical setting and in population-based studies. The sensible and quick format of this instrument are key factors that will contribute to its widespread use...

A tradução e adaptação transcultural seguiram as diretrizes do Consensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement Instruments nos estágios: tradução, síntese, retrotradução, revisão pelo comitê de especialistas e pré-teste.

INTRODUCTION: A great emphasis has been placed on health-related quality of life of COPD patients and specific questionnaires have been developed in order to measure it. OBJECTIVE: This study describes the language and cultural adaptation of a new (and short) disease-specific health status questionnaire developed for chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases: the Airways Questionnaire 20 (AQ20). METHODS: In order to validate this questionnaire in Brazil, it was initially translated into Portuguese. The cultural adaptation was taken into consideration and then a back translation to English was undertaken, in order to obtain a final Portuguese version. Correlations were made with FEV1, SpO2, BMI and another disease-specific health status questionnaire, the Saint George Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ), previously validated in Brazil. The interclass correlation ratio was done to test the reproducibility of AQ20. RESULTS: The interclass correlation ratio for the total score was alpha = 0.90 (intra-observer variability) and alpha = 0.93 (inter-observer variability) (p < 0.05 for both). The correlation with total SGRQ score was 0.76, with p < 0.001. The average time to answer the AQ20 was 4 min and 6 s. CONCLUSION: The Brazilian Portuguese version of AQ20 is reproducible...

Toutefois...

Background. A 10-question screening questionnaire for androgen deficiency in aging men (ADAM) was reported in previous white but not Chinese populations. We therefore investigated the validity of a Chinese version of the Saint Louis University ADAM questionnaire to screen for androgen deficiency in Chinese men. Methods. This was a cross-sectional study. Seven hundred ninety-six ambulatory community-based Chinese men, 18–89 years old, were recruited from October 2003 through June 2006. Self-administered Chinese ADAM questionnaire and morning blood samples for serum total testosterone (TT) and bioavailable testosterone (BT) levels were collected from all participants. Low serum BT levels (androgen deficiency) were defined as <5th percentile of serum BT levels in young healthy Chinese men (18–29 years). Results. The Chinese ADAM questionnaire had good internal consistency (Cronbach = 0.74) and test–retest reliability (Pearson correlation coefficient, r = 0.86; p <.001, two-tailed). As a screening test for low serum BT levels, the Chinese ADAM questionnaire has a high sensitivity of 88% but low specificity of 32%. In 6 of the 10 questions, the mean serum BT levels were significantly lower in those who answered positively than in those who answered negatively. Using a cut-off score of 2...

Introduction: The frequency of sleep disordered breathing (SDB) has been reported to increase during pregnancy. SDB may have adverse effects on the fetus. Screening tools for SDB in pregnancy are lacking. We compared a modified Sleep Heart Health Study questionnaire and a single-channel nasal pressure screening device in their ability to identify SDB. Method: Pregnant and non-pregnant women were screened for signs and symptoms of SDB using a questionnaire and a nasal pressure recording device. A sleep problem score and a SDB-score were calculated using questionnaire items. Retest reliability was investigated by repeating the questionnaire study after a mean of 7 weeks using Spearman’s or Pearson’s Test. Results: Forty-eight pregnant and 31 non-pregnant women participated. General comprehensibility of the questionnaire was good. Questions on snoring and apnea could not be answered by 27.8 and 8.9% of participants. Pearson’s correlation coefficient for sleep scores in woman who remained pregnant was 0.81 for the sleep problem score and 0.79 for the SDB-score. Snoring as detected by nasal pressure and by questionnaire showed a correlation of 0.33. Apnea-Hypopnea-Index and SDB-Score showed a correlation of 0.42 (Pearson’s correlation coefficient). An SDB-Score cut-off value of 3.5 yielded 0.87 specificity and 0.70 sensitivity for predicting an AHI > 3 on the single-channel recording. Conclusion: The TUSAPS-Questionnaire may be a useful tool in the evaluation of SDB in pregnancy.; Einleitung: Untersuchungen zeigten...

Background: Quality of patient care includes both technical and non-technical elements of care, referred to as personal care. Previous work has focused on assessing the quality of technical care in prostate cancer radiotherapy, but little work has been done to assess the quality of personal care. Purpose: The purpose of this project was to create a self-administered questionnaire to measure the quality of personal care for patients undergoing radiotherapy for early-stage prostate cancer. Methods: Dimensions and candidate indicators of the quality of personal care were identified through a comprehensive literature search. The indicators were assigned to dimensions and then arranged into steps in the radiotherapy care continuum. A questionnaire was constructed using the indicators to assess patients’ views about the quality of their care as well as the importance of each indicator. Cognitive interviews were conducted with four health care professionals and eight patients to determine the clarity, comprehensiveness and appropriateness of the questionnaire. The questionnaire was then pilot tested on patients undergoing radiotherapy for early-stage prostate cancer. Results: A total of 176 indicators of the quality of personal care were initially identified representing 10 dimensions of care. Cognitive interviews identified problems with the questionnaire primarily related to the clarity and redundancy of the indicators and the appropriateness of the response categories. To reduce burden...

OBJECTIVE: To adapt the Body Shape Questionnaire for use in the Brazilian population; to study the internal validity and the dimensionality of the scale when used in a non- clinical Brazilian population. METHOD: A cross- sectional study was accomplished comprising 164 students in the first 3 years of the School of Medicine conveniently selected at the Universidade Federal de São Paulo. The 34- item Body Shape Questionnaire version and a questionnaire to assess demographic and anthropometric information were used. RESULTS: The internal consistency of the Body Shape Questionnaire measured by Cronbach's alpha was 0.97, indicating that the questions of the scale converge to the same construct. The factor analysis of the scale resulted in a four- dimension solution accounting for 66.4% of the total data variability. Regarding the final score of Body Shape Questionnaire, the mean score was 58.7 ± 25.1 for men and 89.7 ± 31.3 for women. DISCUSSION: We found statistically significant gender differences in the means of the Body Shape Questionnaire scores. Women showed higher dissatisfaction than did men as to their appearance as measured by the Body Shape Questionnaire. The adapted version of the scale seems to maintain the characteristics of the original scale.

This workshop intends to discuss how a large international questionnaire should be constructed to be applied in several countries with different cultural background and languages. We will present and discuss the methodology used in our European research project Biohead-Citizen to analyse the conceptions of in-service and pre-service teachers in 18 countries concerning biological, health and environmental issues. We will work on some specific examples coming from this project. The several steps of the questionnaire construction – which will be the bases for the discussion in the workshop – are the following: - A clear definition of the goals of the research and of the theoretical background; - Gathering questions (in English) related to the goals, either tested in prior research or entirely new. Collective discussion on these questions; - Questionnaire translation (from English) in each country and, very important, validation of the translations, using procedures that we will present and test during the workshop; - Teachers' interviews to identify difficulties related to particular questions; - Questionnaire pilot test to analyse the reliability of each question (two tests on the same sample groups a month apart); - Application of statistical methods (MCA and PCA) for the selection of the most discriminating questions and the most pertinent ways to analyse data; - Improvement of the initial questionnaire to prepare the final questionnaire; - Definition of the sample groups and delineation of the precise context and way to apply the questionnaire; - Finally...

Introduction: Emotions have a powerful effect on our choice of food and eating habits. It has been found that in some people there is relationship between eating, emotions and the increased energy intake. This relationship should be measurable to better understand how food is used to deal with certain mood states and how these emotions affect the effectiveness of weight loss programs. Objective: To develop and analyze the psychometric characteristics of a questionnaire on emotional eating for obesity easy to apply in clinical practice. Subjects and methods: A ten-item questionnaire called Emotional-Eater-Questionnaire (EEQ) was developed and administered to a total of 354 subjects (body mass index, 31 ± 5), aged 39 ± 12, who were subjected to a weight-reduction program. The questionnaire was specifically designed for obesity. Analysis of the internal structure, internal consistency, test-retest reliability and convergent validity with Mindful-Eater-Questionnaire (MEQ) were conducted. Results: After principal components analysis, the questionnaire was classified in three different dimensions that explained 60% of the total variance: Disinhibition, Type-of-food and Guilt. Internal consistency showed that Cronbach´s alpha was 0.773 for the “Dishinibition” subscale...

Background and purpose: Epidemiological studies of restless legs syndrome (RLS) have been limited by lack of a well validated patient-completed diagnostic questionnaire that has a high enough specificity to provide a reasonable positive predictive value. Most of the currently used patient completed diagnostic questionnaires have neither been validated nor included items facilitating the differential diagnosis of RLS from conditions producing similar symptoms. The Cambridge-Hopkins diagnostic questionnaire for RLS (CH-RLSq) was developed with several iterations to include items covering the basic diagnostic features of RLS and to provide some basic differential diagnosis. This validation study sought to determine the sensitivity and specificity of the RLS diagnosis based on this questionnaire. Patients and methods: The CH-RLSq was completed by 2005 blood donors who were asked to consent to being contacted for a telephone diagnostic interview. A scoring criterion was established for ascertainment of RLS based on the clinical definition of the disorder and the exclusion of ??mimic? conditions. A weighted sample (N = 185) of all completed questionnaires was selected for expert clinical diagnosis of RLS using the validated Hopkins Telephone Diagnostic Interview (HDTI). The telephone interviewers were blinded to all questionnaire responses. Results: A telephone diagnosis was obtained on 183 of the sample?s 185 questionnaires. The questionnaire?s normalized sensitivity and specificity were 87.2% and 94.4%...
