Document engineering is the computer science discipline that investigates systems for documents in any form and in all media. As with the relationship between software engineering and software, document engineering is concerned with principles, tools and processes that improve our ability to create, manage, and maintain documents (http://www.documentengineering.org). The ACM Symposium on Document Engineering is an annual meeting of researchers active in document engineering: it is sponsored by ACM by means of the ACM SIGWEB Special Interest Group. In this editorial, we first point to work carried out in the context of document engineering, which are directly related to multimedia tools and applications. We conclude with a summary of the papers presented in this special issue.

No início dos anos 90, os primeiros indícios do tráfico ilícito de materiais nucleares e radioativos foram observados principalmente na região européia. Uma década marcada por inúmeros casos de apreensão desse tipo de material. Como resultado, esses atos passaram a ser alvo de investigações criminais forenses, desenvolvendo-se a partir daí, a ciência forense nuclear. No Brasil não há registros oficiais do tráfico ilícito de material nuclear, entretanto, é amplamente conhecida a extração e o transporte ilegal de materiais geológicos radioativos, assim como a apreensão de fragmentos de materiais utilizados como blindagem de fontes radioativas. Uma das principais ferramentas utilizadas na ciência forense nuclear consiste no estabelecimento de bancos de dados de materiais nucleares. Esses documentos devem conter o maior número possível de informações sobre as características físicas, químicas e nucleares do material apreendido, permitindo a identificação de sua origem, processo de fabricação ou mesmo a idade (age). Traditionally, machine readable barcodes with specialized readers have enabled communication of digital data via printed interfaces. Increasingly, it is becoming desirable to also enable communication of digital data using commonly available electronic imaging equipment such as desktop scanners, printers, and digital cameras built into mobile devices that have become ubiquitous in the world around us. In this thesis, we investigate problems in high capacity data embedding for printed documents that operate using commonly available electronic imaging equipment and enable novel applications for security and connectivity. In this context, we first develop a new framework for data hiding in images printed with clustered-dot halftones. In particular, we introduce an analytical threshold function that generates elliptically shaped halftone dots in any desired orientation. The readiness assessment and roadmap for implementation are the first two components of the Electronic Government Procurement (E-GP) assessment and implementation effort to assist the Royal Government of Bhutan (RGoB) develop an e-GP implementation plan. This work is part of a wider ongoing initiative for public procurement reform, which the RGoB is undertaking with World Bank and other donor funding, which also looks into areas concerning; 1) revisions to the legal framework (i.e. the procurement manual and supporting bidding and consultancy documents), 2) procurement complaints mechanisms, 3) the establishment of a public procurement policy mechanism, and 4) procurement capacity building through existing national training institutions. Presentation materials are not available for this presentation.; A particular challenge in the text recognition of historical document images is the considerable amount of "image noise" that can arise during the whole life cycle of a document from printing and storage to the usage and scanning of the document. Historical documents suffer from several different kinds of noise such as geometric distortions, bleed-through, textured papers, stamp, stain, and so forth. Noise will affect and complicate the different stages of document image analysis including enhancement, segmentation, layout analysis and recognition. This talk will cover the description of different stages of document image analysis and challenges and opportunities in image processing and analysis of historical documents. I will particularly explain about the software that I developed in the IMPACT project for correction of arbitrary geometric artefacts in historical documents. Such distortions appear as arbitrary warping, fold, and page curl and have detrimental effects on OCR and print-on-demand quality.

With motorcycle ownership high and rising in Vietnam, and motorcycle riders vulnerable to both fatal and non-fatal injury, the re-introduction of mandatory helmet legislation in 2007 has been a priority for the Vietnamese government. The paper uses a qualitative analysis of web-based versions of the eight most popular newspapers in Viet Nam to track reporting over four phases of the implementation of the legislation, identifying codes and constructing the dominant themes of the media coverage. The study documents the justification and promotion of the legislation, and the mechanisms for preparing for its implementation at a national and local level, developing solutions and encouraging the replication of successful strategies. It records opposition and obstacles to helmet use, and concerns raised around the quality of helmets purchased. In return, the press notes the response of the market in innovative solutions to these problems. With the successful implementation of the legislation, the functions of the print media in promulgating and promoting the legislation, together with the reporting of ongoing resistance to the process, serve to enable a dialogue between the State and population around expressed concerns. Print.com is a mobile app and website that is designed to work with smartphones (iOS and Android), tablets (iOS Android and Windows) and PC’s. It enables users to print effortlessly to their own printer devices or to a network of printers both at retail establishments and to exclusive Print.com affiliates. In addition to giving a user the ability to print (and expand the printing capability) all print jobs will be stored to a cloud service with features that allow access to documents and presentations not seen before (patent pending on abilities to embed QR codes in paper docs to access electronic versions). The market for printing from mobile devices is strong and growing with the introduction of these devices in recent years (since this market is relatively new, numbers are scarce however we believe the market is on the order of hundreds of millions of dollars). The displacement of PC’s has created a hole not filled by the traditional players in this space. Today HP’s e-Print and Apple’s AirXXX have not solved major problems in printing from mobile devices. We believe it will take an independent player to make the most of the opportunity to bridge devices printers (of all brands) and location-based printing services. In addition no one has explored connecting printing to cloud services only recently available. We expect Print.com to monetize the opportunity through various channels including revenue sharing with retail and partner printers premium versions of the app and other minor advertising and specialization channels. We have had discussions with enterprises thinking of converting to tablets but lacking the printing capabilities necessary by their business. Meaningful mediums is a study of the political economy of writing in the first Ottoman city to develop a sustained urban print culture. Cairo’s writing economy comprised the longstanding manuscript industry, the governmental printing industry from the 1820s, and the for-profit private press printing industry from the 1850s. I investigate these industries’ functions, interactions, and reputations to explore why Cairene printing developed and how contemporaries ascribed meaning to textual production during this period of flux. This study relies on the texts themselves to generate the history of their production. I aggregate the names, dates, and other information contained within their openings, contents, and colophons to chart the work of their producers and vendors for the first time. I then contextualize this information through contemporary iconographic and descriptive depictions of Cairene texts. My sources are drawn from libraries and private collections in America, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and France. They include formal and ephemeral manuscripts and printings. The traditional web caching is currently limited to static documents only. A page generated on the fly from a server side script may have different contents on different accesses and hence cannot be cached. A number of proposals for attacking the problem have emerged based on the observation that different instances of a dynamic document are usually quite similar in most cases, i.e. they have a lot of common HTML code. In this paper, we first review these related techniques and show their inadequacy for practical use. We then present a general and fully automatic technique called Vcache based on the decomposition of dynamic documents into a hierarchy of templates and bindings. The technique is designed keeping in mind languages like Perl and C etc that generate the documents using low-level print like statements. The top printing trade associations and scholars who study this industry have found that the demand for print services provided by commercial printers has declined. One major cause of this decline appears to be the growing electronic distribution of documents. Also, digital presses and high-volume office copiers now make it possible for corporations to print their own high-quality documents internally. A third explanation for the decline may be the fact that suppliers are adding printing to their service offerings, thus competing directly with the services provided by commercial printers. As printing technology advances, new markets and applications are developing, requiring improved document longevity and robustness. Digital printing technologies introduced in 1994 opened new possibilities for printing high quality low quantity four color documents. Documents could be manufactured faster and at a more affordable cost than ever before. Along with the introduction of digital presses such as the Xeikon DCP- 1 and Indigo E-Print 1000 came the expectation that this new printing technology would grow at a highly accelerated rate. To the disappointment of many companies that invested in this technology, growth has been much slower than anticipated. Lack of market growth is attributed to an uninformed client base, one unable to understand how this technology can service its needs. When clients require only 50 to 1000 copies of a document, the issue of profitability exists. Digital presses are certainly more efficient with run lengths that are shorter since there are no films or plates. They require minimal make ready such as mounting plates and running the press until optimal inking of the substrate. Unlike conventional printing workflow, proofs are generated on the digital press when required. The inefficiencies in digital printing reside in the prepress function since the workflow is the same as traditional prepress with the exception of the proofing process. This is due to the high apportioned cost of prepress in relation to the short run length when compared to traditional printing. The purpose of this paper was to develop and show how an operational model predicts the profitability of prepress operations when digital printing with a Xeikon engine. In a world where people see, process and remember information differently, the question arises: Is technology being used in a manner that acknowledges and addresses user differences to the fullest extent? Currently, new print technologies like Variable Data Printing (VDP) are only being used to create customized direct mailing pieces and personalized products for the purpose of marketing, sales and promotion. However, VDP introduces the ability to change data and design elements in printed documents on an individual basis, making it possible to address differences in visual and cognitive abilities, language and culture, and situational considerations. Applying this concept of customization to educational or informational documents would allow a small amount of input from a user to influence unique output (different sequences or layouts, typographic decisions and appropriate content choices) that are more relevant, usable and engaging. While using VDP as a means to explore and achieve this customization, the focus of this thesis study is not the technology, but the development of a graphic design strategy that also accommodates this customization goal to make information more accessible and usable on an individual basis.

With the explosion of the Internet there are abundant opportunities for budding authors (writers and designers). Their content can be eaily posted on the Web and accessed by a wide reader base through WWW. However, this on-demand and on-site publishing is limited to on-screen viewing and desktop printing. As more and more books and materials are accessed, there is growing need for on-demand printed copies. Ordering a printed copy is still a traditional business which limits amature authors and users from getting easy access to them. Some of the on-line bookstores provide only the purchase transactions through on-line, while the printing itself is done through traditional process. Some of the growing needs of on-demand printing include: getting a printed copy of a electronic Thesis material, printed copy of selective sections of a User Manual, revised pages of a Book. This thesis project involves a thorough study of a Model to facilitate on-demand print of documents available in Internet covering such issues like quality, speed, copyright, security, bandwidth, royalty and delivery. A working project will be developed, demonstrating the Model, using a Docutech Printer. The steps involved in setting up a work flow to facilitate on-demand printing of an Internet document using Interdoc/Docutech work flow will be documented. This work could be further extended to adopt to the evolving "Collaborated Publishing" concept widely being discussed for use in the Academic Society.
