Breeding parameters of Great Cormorants (PkaZac/iOCOfiCLX CCUibo dCUtbo) and Double-crested Cormorants (P. CLU/uXuA CMJhLtllb) were examined at two mixed species colonies at Cape Tryon and Durell Point, Prince Edward Island from 1976 to 1978. Differential access to nests at the two colony sites resulted in more complete demographic data for P. CCUibo than for P. CLUJiituA. In 1911j P. CCtfibo was present at both colonies by 21 March, whereas P. auAAJtuA did not return until 1 April and 16 April at Cape Tryon and Durell Point, respectively. Differences in the arrival chronology by individuals of each species and differences in the time of nest site occupation according to age, are suggested as factors influencing the nest site distribution of P. CXUtbo and P. aiVtituA at Cape Tryon. Forty-eight P. dOJtbo chicks banded at the Durell Point colony between 19 74 and 19 76 returned there to nest as two- to four-year olds in 19 77 and 19 78. Unmarked individuals with clutch-starts in April were likely greater than four years old as all marked two to four-year olds (with one possible exception) in 19 77 and 1978 had clutch-starts in May and June. Seasonal variation in the breeding success of P. dOJibo individuals was examined at Durell Point in 1977. Mean clutch-size...

Knowledge of parasites shed by wild canids can assist in recognizing risk to human and domestic animal health. Our aim was to estimate the prevalence of patent infections with Toxocara canis and other parasites in foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and coyotes (Canis latrans) in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Identification of parasite species was based on microscopic examination of feces, with the use of a sucrose fecal flotation method. Sample collection was performed in winter on carcasses of 271 and 185 hunted or trapped foxes and coyotes, respectively. One or more parasite species were observed in 242 (89%) foxes and 128 (69%) coyotes. Toxocara canis, Uncinaria stenocephala, Capillaria spp., Mesocestoides, Taenidd spp., Alaria spp., Cryptocotyle lingua, Sarcocystis spp., Neospora caninum-like coccidia, and other coccidia were identified. A third of juvenile foxes were shedding T. canis and had a high prevalence of Capillaria spp., especially in juvenile foxes (69%). Taenidd eggs, Alaria spp. and Sarcocystis spp. were more common in coyotes (24, 18, and 9%, respectively) than foxes (8, 11, and 1%, respectively). Despite the limitations of fecal flotation to identify parasite species, the high prevalence of T. canis warrants the attention of public health professionals.; Wendela Wapenaar...

Prevalence of Giardia duodenalis in dairy and beef cattle on farms around Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (Canada) was determined by analyzing feces using direct immunofluorescence antibody microscopy. Genotypes were determined by 16S-rRNA sequencing. Fecal samples (n = 892) were collected from adult cattle in dairy tie-stall, dairy free-stall, and beef herds (10 herds each), and from calves (n = 183) from 11 dairy farms. Prevalence rates were 38% and 51% in cows and calves, respectively. Giardia duodenalis was present in all dairy herds, in 9/10 beef herds and in calves from 10/11 herds examined. Prevalence rates were 40% and 41% for cows in tie- and free-stall herds, respectively, and 27% for beef cows. Zoonotic Assemblage A was found in 12.2% of calves concomitantly infected with Assemblage E. All successfully sequenced samples (114/128) from cows corresponded to Assemblage E. Giardia duodenalis is highly prevalent in cattle herds in Prince Edward Island and Assemblage A in calves is a potential public health concern.; http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3157069/; Fabienne D. Cryptosporidium spp. are common intestinal protozoan parasites that infect a wide range of hosts, including humans and livestock, worldwide. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. in dairy calves in Prince Edward Island, Canada, and the potential for transmission of this parasite between dairy calves and humans. Fecal samples were collected from 183 dairy calves from 11 farms in Prince Edward Island. The prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. infections in these animals was determined by examining for the presence of oocysts in the fecal samples, using immunofluorescence microscopy. Molecular characterization was done using a nested-PCR protocol to amplify fragments of the Cryptosporidium heat-shock protein 70 gene, followed by DNA sequencing. Ten calves (6.2%), representing 4 out of 11 farms tested, were positive for Cryptosporidium spp. DNA sequence analysis on five PCR positive samples demonstrated that Cryptosporidium parvum was the only species present in the calves tested, suggesting that there is a potential risk of zoonotic transmission between dairy calves and humans in this region.; Tatjana Coklin, Fabienne D. An understanding of the population dynamics and habitat of wild Red Foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and Coyotes (Canis latrans) is a prerequisite to wildlife management. This information is also important in assessing the risk these wild canids pose to the public and domestic animals. On Prince Edward Island, information on age, sex, reproductive activity, and habitat use of 271 Red Foxes and 201 Coyotes was collected in the hunting and trapping season of 2004–2005. The estimated age of Red Foxes and Coyotes ranged from 0.5 to 13.5 years. A large proportion of harvested Red Foxes and Coyotes (58% and 48%, respectively) consisted of juveniles. The sex ratio was not significantly different from 1:1 for either species. Average litter size was 5.0 and 5.2 for Red Foxes and Coyotes, respectively. Number of placental scars ranged from 0 to 7 in Red Foxes and from 0 to 11 in Coyotes. Agricultural areas were the main habitat type (52%) of harvested Red Foxes. For harvested Coyotes, forest was the main habitat (44%), followed closely by agricultural areas (43%). Urban areas were a significant part (13%) of the habitat of Red Foxes. These data can be used to monitor population dynamics over time, provide information for wildlife management, and provide information on potential risk areas for disease transmission by wild canids.; Wendela Wapenaar...

This study evaluated the use of bulk milk as a diagnostic tool for estimation of herd-level Neospora caninum exposure in Atlantic Canada; it was used to estimate the prevalence of dairy farms with a within-herd N. caninum-seroprevalence $ 15% in Prince Edward Island (PEI). The variation over time of N. caninum antibodies in bulk milk is also reported. Skimmed bulk milk and individual serum samples were analyzed for N. Caninum antibodies by using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Bulk milk samples were collected in May 2004 (n = 235), May 2005 (n = 189), and June 2005 (n = 235). The prevalence of dairy farms with a within-herd seroprevalence $ 15% on PEI was 6.4% in May 2004. In May and June 2005, respectively, 10.1% and 10.2% of farms had a $ 15% within-herd seroprevalence. In 11 farms that were considered positive based on bulk milk samples, blood samples were collected from all adult cows in September 2005, in conjunction with a 4th bulk milk sample on the same day. The correlation coefficient between serology and bulk milk ELISA was 0.87. The results of this study demonstrate that the prevalence of N. caninum in dairy farms can be estimated by using a bulk milk ELISA.; Wendela Wapenaar, Herman W. Barkema, Ryan M. O’Handley...

An advertisement that incorporates a drawing of a car cavalcade being greeted in a bush setting. Framed by large gum trees is a small crowd waving flags and cloths in front of buildings surrounded by post-and-rail fences. A flag pole flies the Union Jack. The occasion is the visit to Australia of H.R.H. The Prince of Wales. He arrived 26 May 1920 in Melbourne aboard the Renown at the start of a three-month tour. According to the text panel: 'His progress was a triumph - and in no small measure its success was dependent on the automobile, for the car by its use, saved time and enabled many centres to be visited'. The cars depicted include 25.6 h.p. Crossleys shipped from England, the same model as that used by the Royal Air Force in France. In the lower right corner is a drawing of a Dunlop tyre with three plumes, a crown and the motto:'Ich Dien' (German for: 'I serve').; Printed on image, l.l.: a monogram of a "D" and an "L" in a diamond. The initials probably stand for Darryl Lindsay who did other illustrations for Dunlop at this time which he signed with his full name.

The Prince is a political text founder of modernity. Its disclosure was so controversial that it is quite difficult to have an exact idea about Machiavelli's own ideas regarding the purpose of his work. Created from the repercussions to the text of the Florentine thinker, the concept of Machiavellianism identifies the modern political thought in such a way that the emergence of the terms sovereign and state joined him almost interchangeably. In this article, I will examine some of the key reactions to The Prince to show the genesis of Machiavellianism in the backdrop of interpretative conflicts in dispute in the boiling of the modern state. My goal is to support the thesis that the thought of Machiavelli was critical to the ruptures that led to political modernity, regardless of his real intentions.; O Príncipe é um texto político fundador da modernidade.

New structural and metamorphic data coupled with U-Pb SHRIMP zircon and Rb-Sr step-leach biotite ages help constrain a period of Early Palaeozoic (Pan-African) deformation recognised in the northern Prince Charles Mountains, east Antarctica. This period of deformation is accommodated along discrete northeast trending mylonites that preserve up-dip reverse kinematics with dominantly southeast over northwest vergence. Ambient P-T conditions of 524 ± 20°C and 7.6 ± 4 kbar accompanied deformation. This phase of deformation post-dated the intrusion of planar felsic dykes that yield ages of c. 550 Ma and pre-dated Rb-Sr biotite ages of c. 475 Ma that record cooling of the terrane below c. 300°C. These mylonites are identical in age to continental collisional events recognised in the southern Prince Charles Mountains and Prydz Bay, which lie to the south and east of the northern Prince Charles Mountains, and similar in age to orogenesis recognised to the west in Lützow-Holm Bay. These belts represent sutures between the component lithospheric blocks of east and west Gondwana. The northern Prince Charles Mountains lie between these sutures. Consequently, the mylonites we report here are interpreted to have formed in an intraplate setting and developed in response to stresses applied along the plated margins as a consequence of continental collision during the amalgamation of Gondwana.

A biological survey of the Prince Edward Islands took place in December 2008. The survey repeated an earlier survey of the populations of surface-nesting seabirds on both islands and of fur seals (Arctocephalus spp.) and alien plants on Prince Edward Island in December 2001. Observations on burrowing seabirds, macro-invertebrates and plant communities on Prince Edward Island and an oceanographic survey of surrounding waters were also included. The survey confirmed many of the observations made on the earlier survey and permitted an assessment of trends in the abundance and distribution of biota since 2001.
