The purpose of this study was to investigate differences between abstracts of posters presented at the 79th (2002) and 80th (2003) Annual Session & Exhibition of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and the published full-length articles resulting from the same studies. The abstracts for poster presentation sessions were downloaded, and basic characteristics of the abstracts and their authors were determined. A PubMed search was then performed to identify the publication of full-length articles based on those abstracts in a peer-reviewed journal. The differences between the abstract and the article were examined and categorized as major and minor differences. Differences identified included authorship, title, materials and methods, results, conclusions, and funding. Data were analyzed with both descriptive and analytic statistics. Overall, 89 percent of the abstracts had at least one variation from its corresponding article, and 65 percent and 76 percent of the abstracts had at least one major and minor variation, respectively, from its corresponding article. The most prevalent major variation was in study results, and the most prevalent minor variation was change in the number of authors. The discussion speculates on some possible reasons for these differences.

This paper aims to present a history of the Portuguese political poster in two key moments of twentieth century Portuguese politics, the moment of the establishment of the ‘Estado Novo’ (or New State) i.e., Salazar’s authoritarian and quasi-fascist dictatorship which ran from 1933- 1974, and the period of the Revolution of April 25 of 1974, which overthrew the previous regime. The two distinct ideologies give rise to two contrasting modes of visual discourse. This is particularly evident in posters made in the two revolutionary moments (1933-1938 and 1974-76). These reveal ruptures in relation to the visual discourses of posters made in the periods before and after these dates. The paper shows how the posters offer a particular kind of lens on the two contrasting revolutionary moments; a way of looking at how the two revolutions attempted to communicate to and connect with the Portuguese people in whose name and one whose behalf—ostensibly in the first case, substantively in the second—the revolutions were undertaken. In terms of the understanding of activism and revolutionary graphics a contribution is made to understanding how revolutions of left and right contrastingly 2 present themselves—and how, through the use of poster...

This study explores the poster as a graphic design object, where cultural and historical as well as formal and asthetic dimensions interfere. In the 1970’s, the 25th April 1974, was one of the most meaningful revolutions that Portugal witnessed in its history. During this period sveral changes occured that spread to all society levels with special emphasis on social, cultural and political sectors.

Students in a fourth year epidemiology course were surveyed after participating in a formal Science Research Day in which they presented original research, in poster form, to be judged by scientists from the community. Of 276 participating students, 80 (29%) responded to the study survey. As a result, 19% of respondents were more likely to pursue a career in science, and 27.5% were more likely to pursue a career in epidemiology. Only one respondent reported being less likely to pursue a science career, while seven were less likely to pursue epidemiology. A majority of respondents felt that the poster experience was on par with, or superior to, a comparable research paper, in terms of both educational appeal and enjoyment. Mandatory, formal poster presentations are an innovative format for teaching advanced health sciences, and may more accurately reflect the realities of a science career than do more traditional educational formats.

This poster presentation will exhibit the ongoing design work within two small islands adjacent to Diner Key Marina gifted by the City of Miami to the non-profit organization, Shake-A-Leg. This organization works to blur the lines between access, recreation, and skill, redefining what is possible. Abled and disabled children, adolescents, and young adults go to Shake-A-Leg to participate in a myriad of activities such as sailing, kayaking, swimming, painting, and socializing in these islands regardless of their inadequate walkways and installations. The users are people from different social statuses, physical and mental abilities. This poster will exhibit the design proposal to enhance the islands’ infrastructure to provide seamless access to all its visitors through the lush habitat in these islands. The proposed program challenges the disabilities of the person and helps them to mediate and transform them into new possibilities and abilities. The program proposes ten components which include a nature trail, restrooms, dinning center, art studio, and observation deck. The design of each space draws from the sailing boat to create solutions were the user will explore, participate and enjoy. The location encourages a feeling of challenge but at the same time it is a place for relief and freedom...

Kaminski, Thomas W.; Background: Sport-related concussions (SRCs) have recently become a large concern in sports of all types and levels. This study aimed to test the effectiveness of a poster concussion intervention program at influencing high school football players in a way that will guide them towards taking the necessary actions when faced with a potential SRC. Methods: The REACT posters were hung in six high schools during a competitive football season, while an additional six non-poster schools served as controls. Effectiveness of the poster campaign was assessed using two variables derived from the RoCKAS-ST survey including the Concussion Knowledge Index (CKI) and the Concussion Attitudes Index (CAI). Results: Both the CKI and CAI scores were higher in the control (non-poster) group. Additionally, the poster group encountered a slight drop in CKI and CAI scores from pre to post-season. Conclusions: Contrary to what we hypothesized, our REACT poster campaign was ineffective in changing SRC-related knowledge and attitudes. We contend that the disconnect between our poster theme and the RoCKAS-ST survey instrument used to measure outcomes, as well as an ineffective poster design were most likely the cause of our findings.; University of Delaware...

The present work exposes a proposal of systematization of two very common modalities in academic and scientific events: oral communication and poster sessions. First it will be discussed the meaning and scope of scientific communication, introducing it as one of the scientist activities. The spreading of the researcher studies can be organized both as written or spoken communication, and also mixing them. Next, some conceptual and technical considerations will be made on oral communication and poster, discussing the following aspects: definition, objectives, features, observations and suggestions about planning and execution. In each modality specific orientations are presented to everyone interested in improving their presentations. This article is especially directed to beginners in academic and scientific events. It has no pretension of being exhaustive concerning the technical aspects involved in the elaboration and scientific publicizing through the modalities emphasized here.

This article mainly draws from ideas and approaches developed in a recently published volume Posters in Action. Visuality in the Making of an African Nation. In contrast to most African poster historiography our argument has developed towards an understanding of posters as images in action and has linked them to their specific historical contexts of production, circulation and visual communication. While remaining critical of the assumption that posters were and are necessarily linked to urban and industrialised settings, we have acknowledged their being located within processes of negotiation of modernisation. The action approach understands posters as active agents in processes of visual communication, which involved different people and spaces at different moments in time. By doing so we have shifted the focus towards the realm of consumption and perception. The article, of course, reflects on the specific form and function of posters, but rather than focusing on image content, graphic vocabularies and genres, we have tried to understand and interpret posters in the context of specific forms of visuality emerging in Namibia throughout the twentieth century. We pay attention to varied forms of agency linked to visuals and explore how they have become meaningful through the ways they have been distributed...
