We performed stellar population synthesis on the nuclear and extended regions of NGC 1068 by means of near-infrared spectroscopy to disentangle their spectral energy distribution components. This is the first time that such a technique is applied to the whole 0.8-2.4 mu m wavelength interval in this galaxy. NGC 1068 is one of the nearest and probably the most studied Seyfert 2 galaxy, becoming an excellent laboratory to study the interaction between black holes, the jets that they can produce and the medium in which they propagate. Our main result is that traces of young stellar population are found at similar to 100 pc south of the nucleus. The contribution of a power-law continuum in the centre is about 25 per cent, which is expected if the light is scattered from a Seyfert 1 nucleus. We find peaks in the contribution of the featureless continuum about 100-150 pc from the nucleus on both sides. They might be associated with regions where the jet encounters dense clouds. Further support to this scenario is given by the peaks of hot dust distribution found around these same regions and the H(2) emission-line profile, leading us to propose that the peaks might be associated to regions where stars are being formed. Hot dust also has an important contribution to the nuclear region...

We use high signal-to-noise ratio long-slit spectra in the λλ3500–7000-Å range of three early-type (Hubble type S0) normal, two low-ionization nuclear emission region (LINER) and three Seyfert 2 galaxies to make a comparative study of the variation of the stellar population properties as a function of distance from the nucleus. In order to characterize the stellar population and other continuum sources (e.g. featureless continuum) we have measured equivalent widths (Ws) of six absorption features, continuum colours and their radial variations, and performed spectral population synthesis as a function of distance from the nucleus. The Ws for the normal galaxies are strongest at the nucleus and decrease outwards. The two LINER galaxies show a similar behaviour, but with the nuclear Ws in the blue …(λ < 4500 ņ) ~~ 10–20 per cent smaller. Both normal galaxies and LINERs present a redder nucleus than their surroundings. The three Seyfert 2 galaxies present the opposite behaviour, with most Ws in the blue being smaller at the nucleus, which is also bluer than outside. By combining the results of the present work with those of a previous study, we conclude that, in a sample of 12 Seyfert 2s of Hubble type S0, 10 (~~ 80 per cent) present nuclear Ws smaller than those of normal galaxies...

In a recently completed survey of the stellar population properties of low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions (LINERs) and LINER/H II transition objects (TOs), we have identified a numerous class of galactic nuclei which stand out because of their conspicuous 10 8−9 yr populations, traced by high-order Balmer absorption lines and other stellar indices. These objects are called ‘young-TOs’, because they all have TO-like emission-line ratios. In this paper we extend this previous work, which concentrated on the nuclear properties, by investigating the radial variations of spectral properties in low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs). Our analysis is based on high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) long-slit spectra in the 3500–5500 Å interval for a sample of 47 galaxies. The data probe distances of typically up to 850 pc from the nucleus with a resolution of ~100 pc (~1 arcsec) and S/N ~ 30. Stellar population gradients are mapped by the radial profiles of absorption-line equivalent widths and continuum colours along the slit. These variations are further analysed by means of a decomposition of each spectrum in terms of template galaxies representative of very young (10 7 yr), intermediate age (10 8–9 yr) and old (≤10 10 yr) stellar populations. This study reveals that young-TOs also differ from old-TOs and old-LINERs in terms of the spatial distributions of their stellar populations and dust. Specifically...

INTRODUCTION: This study was developed to evaluate the situation of leprosy in the general population of the municipality of Buriticupu, State of Maranhão, Brazil. METHODS: We used the method of active search to identify new cases from 2008 to 2010. Bacilloscopy of intradermal scrapings was performed in all patients with skin lesions compatible with leprosy, and histopathological examination in those who had doubts on the definition of the clinical form. RESULTS: The study included 19,104 individuals, with 42 patients diagnosed with leprosy after clinical examination, representing a detection rate of 219.84 per 100,000 inhabitants. The predominant clinical presentation was tuberculoid with 24 (57.1%) cases, followed by borderline with 11, indeterminate with four, and lepromatous with three cases. The study also allowed the identification of 81 patients with a history of leprosy and other skin diseases, such as pityriasis versicolor, dermatophytosis, scabies, vitiligo, and skin carcinoma. The binomial test showed that the proportion of cases in the headquarters was significantly higher than that in the villages (p = 0.04), and the generalized exact test showed that there was no association between age and clinical form (p = 0.438) and between age and gender (p = 0.083). CONCLUSIONS: The elevated detection rate defines the city as hyperendemic for leprosy; the active search for cases...

Although the reported aetiological agent of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in Sri Lanka is Leishmania donovani, the sandfly vector remains unknown. Ninety-five sandflies, 60 females and 35 males, collected in six localities in the district of Matale, central Sri Lanka, close to current active transmission foci of CL were examined for taxonomically relevant characteristics. Eleven diagnostic morphological characters for female sandflies were compared with measurements described for Indian and Sri Lankan sandflies, including the now recognised Phlebotomus argentipes sensu lato species complex. The mean morphometric measurements of collected female sandflies differed significantly from published values for P. argentipes morphospecies B, now re-identified as Phlebotomus annandalei from Delft Island and northern Sri Lanka, from recently re-identified P. argentipes s.s. sibling species and from Phlebotomus glaucus. Furthermore, analysis of underlying variation in the morphometric data through principal component analysis also illustrated differences between the population described herein and previously recognised members of the P. argentipes species complex. Collectively, these results suggest that a morphologically distinct population, perhaps most closely related to P. glaucus of the P. argentipess. I. species complex...

Background: Most of the data on the association between physical activity and the environment are derived from high-income countries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between the perceived environment and physical activity (leisure-time and transport-related) in a population-based sample. Methods: Cross-sectional study including 972 adults (20-69 years) living in the urban area of Pelotas, Brazil. Physical activity was measured using the long International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Environmental variables were assessed using a modified version of the Neighborhood Environment Walkability Scale. Results: 69.8% (95%CI; 66.9-72.7) and 51.9% (95%CI; 48.8-55.1) of the subjects did not reach 150 min/wk of leisure-time physical activity and active transportation, respectively. While leisure-time physical activity increased with increasing socioeconomic level, the opposite was observed for transport-related activity levels. Subjects living close to green areas were more likely to be active in leisure-time, as well as those who reported to live in safe neighborhoods. Transport-related physical activity was higher among individuals living in areas with garbage accumulation, and was lower among those who live in neighborhoods which are difficult to walk or cycle due to traffic. Social support was strongly associated with leisure-time physical activity. Conclusion: Safety investments...

A shrinking working-age population will be the Russian Federations biggest demographic challenge in coming decades. With workers increasingly scarce, sustainable future economic development depends on Russias ability to bring into the labor force currently under-utilized groups, such as young mothers and older people, and to maximize the productivity of every worker. This study assesses the projected dynamics of the working-age population and how changes in labor force participation may affect the future workforce. It also assesses the potential contribution of individual factors to either facilitate or deter the participation of older Russians in the labor force. A review of disincentives for labor force participation in current social insurance programs and labor institutions is followed by policy proposals to help prolong the working lives of older adults.

The purpose of this report is to provide an overview of the relationship between population and climate change, and explore the viability of stabilising population levels as a means of mitigating Australia's future carbon emissions. The aim of the report was to provide to Mr Kelvin Thomson MP, the most useful discussion of the relationship between population and climate change in Australia, and the effect of population growth on the Government's greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation target. The analysis was based on appraising the future direction of Australia's population and emissions growth, examining the drivers of this growth, comparing methods for limiting the growth of both, and evaluating the likely impacts of these methods. Chapter I finds that immigration policy is the method by which the Australian Government can most influence future population. However, the formation of immigration policy, and thus population growth, has been influenced by interest groups that often have considerable national profiles, and often with conflicting agendas, and this factor has heavily influenced the creation of long-term policy. Chapter IT finds that Australia's GHG emissions are extremely high per capita and largely driven by substantial growth in stationary energy. Australia's GHG emissions will be abated...

Background: Active transportation refers to methods of travel that involve physical activity, such as walking and bicycling. For students, characteristics of both individual and contextual environments are likely associated with active transportation to school. Furthermore, injury is one possible but overlooked outcome of active transportation to school. Objectives: To examine among urban Canadian youth in grades 6-10: 1) associations between individual- and area-level factors and active transportation to school and 2) the relationship between active transportation to school and active transportation injury. Methods: Individual-level data were obtained from the 2009/2010 Canadian Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (HBSC) survey. Active transportation to school was measured via student’s report of their usual method of travel to school. Active transportation injury was assessed via self-report for a one-year recall period. Area-level data were obtained from a school administrators’ survey and from various geographical sources. Multi-level logistic regression was used to examine the associations of interest. Results: Multiple correlates of active transportation to school were identified from the individual/family, school...

This is the final version of the article. It first appeared from Elsevier via http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ypmed.2015.02.009; Objective: Countries and regions vary substantially in transport related physical activity that people gain from walking and cycling and in how this varies by age and gender. This study aims to quantify the population health impacts of differences between four settings. Method: The Integrated Transport and Health Model (ITHIM) was used to estimate health impacts from changes to physical activity that would arise if adults in urban areas in England and Wales adopted travel patterns of Switzerland, the Netherlands, and California. The model was parameterised with data from travel surveys from each setting and estimated using Monte Carlo simulation. Two types of scenarios were created, one in which the total travel time budget was assumed to be fixed and one where total travel times varied. Results: Substantial population health benefits would accrue if people in England and Wales gained as much transport related physical activity as people in Switzerland or the Netherlands, whilst smaller but still considerable harms would occur if active travel fell to the level seen in California. The benefits from achieving the travel patterns of the high cycling Netherlands or high walking Switzerland were similar. Conclusion: Differences between high income countries in how people travel have important implications for population health.; The work was undertaken under the auspices of the Centre for Diet and Activity Research (CEDAR)...

The distribution of the Australian mainland endemic subspecies of the eclectus parrot, Eclectus roratus macgillivrayi, is currently confined to the lowland rainforests of the Iron-McIlwraith Ranges of eastern Cape York Peninsula. Females breed in large hollows in emergent rainforest trees that are readily visible from above. Aerial surveys were used to sample 58% of the rainforest (454 km2) of the Iron Range region to estimate the density of these nest trees. Corrections for overcounting bias (not all observed emergent trees were active nest trees) and undercounting bias (not all active nest trees were visible from the air) were made by ground-truthing over 70 trees. The tree count data were treated in two different ways, producing estimates of 417 (s.e. = 25) and 462 (s.e. = 31) nest trees for the Iron Range region. Long-term observational data on the number of eclectus parrots associated with each nest tree were used to estimate the population size of eclectus parrots at Iron Range: 538-596 breeding females, and 1059-1173 males. These results have three implications. First, this relatively low population estimate suggests that the Australian subspecies of eclectus parrots should be considered vulnerable to habitat loss or perturbation...

Flexicurity is viewed as the best way of securing both agood investment environment and a secure workforce. Flexicurity combines a flexible labor market, where employers have few or no restrictions with regard to firing workers, with generous welfare benefits; and the two are facilitated through active labor market policies. Denmark really has a flexible labor market; but benefits in case of unemployment and activation cannot be described as generous in a European context. Activation is often perceived as a punishment for being unemployed and has mainly been undertaken because it is mandatory, and one is in risk of losing benefits if one refuses an activation offer. There is a price to be paid for a high degree of flexibility, and it comes in the form of marginalization and exclusion. 25 percent of the Danish population of working ages is for long spells or permanently existing on not very generous benefits outside the labor market.; Flexicurity is viewed as the best way of securing both agood investment environment and a secure workforce.
