Our objective was to identify the understanding of theoretical aspects and the interpretation of practical situations that a sample of 3,623 graduate students (Population= 22,438) at the University of São Paulo (USP, Brazil) have regarding academic plagiarism. The survey, conducted in 2012 and 2013, used an electronic questionnaire containing 30 multiple choice questions developed from the literature concerning the concept and definition of plagiarism (U.S. Department Of Health And Human Services, 2005;Australian Government, 2007; United Kingdom, 2011), occurrence modality (Green, 2002; Pecorari, 2003; Gilmore et al.,2010; Roig, 2011), types of plagiarism (Harris, 2001; Loui, 2002;Maxwell, Curtis & Vardanega, 2008; Roig, 2011; Plagiarism.org, 2013), reasons for occurrence (Mccabe & Trevino, 1997; Harris, 2001; Mccabe, Butterfield & Trevino, 2006; Power, 2009; Curtis & Popal, 2011; Sauthier et al., 2011), standards and preventive actions adopted (Mccabe, Trevino & Butterfield, 2001; 2002; Pecorari, 2003; Mccabe & Pavela, 2005).We identified that the fact of respondents agreeing or disagreeing with the theoretical-conceptual characteristics of plagiarism did not make a difference in their capacity of correctly assessing practical situations characterizing plagiarism. Contudo, os modelos da historiografia clássica já não supriam as exigências por novas maneiras de representar e narrar o passado, de tal forma que sua obra veio a ser confundida com a prática de plágio, caindo no descrédito dos historiadores e eruditos.; This dissertation investigates the work of historiography of Alphonse de Beauchamp (1767-1832) from which examines the transformations in the way of writing history in the early nineteenth century. Historian oriented to the general public...

This chapter uses Tönnies’ notions of Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft to examine the issue of plagiarism from a culturalist perspective. According to this, plagiarism is understood not as a universal or unequivocal evil, but as one component of a particular ethical system that took hold within a specific historical and social context, roughly contemporary with the European Enlightenment. Today, that ethical framework is so deeply entrenched in the power structures of the modern world that its values go largely unquestioned in countries at the centre of the world economic system. However, as we move away from the centre towards the periphery, we find that those values become weaker, and may enter into conflict with another moral code, which is usually more traditional in nature, though no less coherent. Indeed, in some parts of the world, it is those traditional values that actually hold sway in local universities, raising serious problems for academic mobility and the internationalization of knowledge. The very concept of plagiarism is also full of inherent contradictions, caused, at least in part, by historical tensions generated by the passage from one kind of society to the other. Vestiges of the Gemeinschaft continue to penetrate all aspects of modern university culture...

Plagiarism is the wrongful presentation of somebody else‘s work or idea as one’s own without adequately attributing it to the source. Most authors know that plagiarism is an unethical publication practice. Yet, it is a serious problem in the medical writing arena. Plagiarism is perhaps the commonest ethical issue plaguing medical writing. In this article, we highlight the different types of plagiarism and address the issues of plagiarism of text, plagiarism of ideas, mosaic plagiarism, self-plagiarism, and duplicate publication. An act of plagiarism can have several repercussions for the author, the journal in question and the publication house as a whole. Sometimes, strict disciplinary action is also taken against the plagiarist. The article cites examples of retraction of articles, suspension of authors, apology letters from journal editors, and other such actions against plagiarism.

Scientific publishing is the ultimate product of scientist work. Number of publications and their quoting are measures of scientist success while unpublished researches are invisible to the scientific community, and as such nonexistent. Researchers in their work rely on their predecessors, while the extent of use of one scientist work, as a source for the work of other authors is the verification of its contributions to the growth of human knowledge. If the author has published an article in a scientific journal it cannot publish the article in any other journal h with a few minor adjustments or without quoting parts of the first article, which are used in another article. Copyright infringement occurs when the author of a new article with or without the mentioning the author used substantial portions of previously published articles, including tables and figures. Scientific institutions and universities should,in accordance with the principles of Good Scientific Practice (GSP) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) have a center for monitoring, security, promotion and development of quality research. Establish rules and compliance to rules of good scientific practice are the obligations of each research institutions, universities and every individual-researchers...

Research shows that plagiarism is a problem not only for English language learners but also for students whose first language is English. With the Internet and ease of copying and pasting information into a word document, plagiarism in on the rise (Maslen, 2003). Oftentimes, students are not aware they are doing something wrong. American students come into college with the cultural conditioning of knowing (perhaps not fully grasping) American academic standards (Gu & Brooks, 2007). International students have the additional disadvantage of not knowing the conventions, traditions, and values held in academic discourse (Gu & Brooks, 2007). Within American academic circles, plagiarism is considered “one of the worst crimes” a student can commit (Wheeler, 2008). However, outside the United States, plagiarism is culturally acceptable; in fact a moral transgression would be to not copy and paste the words of an expert (Wheeler, 2008). Most of the students in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) at Miami-Dade College are planning on continuing their education once they finish the EAP program so it is essential that they are exposed to the issue of plagiarism. A number of faculty who teach in subject areas have complained that incoming students do not have the skills needed to succeed; these skills include how to cite sources and reference material. As a result of this...

This paper reports on the results of an online staff survey at one Australian university on attitudes to plagiarism issues, the use and efficacy of the institutional plagiarism policy and Turnitin system and staff perceptions of institutional resources that were available to assist both staff and students reduce the incidence of plagiarism. The survey was designed to capture staff perceptions, rather than verifiable activity or plagiarism detection outcomes. The survey responses highlighted the need for a common understanding of plagiarism and approaches to the detection and dealing with suspected plagiarism incidents. The responses also signalled a requirement for improved assessment practices that reduce the opportunity for plagiarism. Staff responses indicated that there was a need to publicise more effectively existing University resources for avoiding plagiarism; only a minority of survey respondents were aware of these resources. The majority of staff perceived that the institutional policies and practices were adequate for dealing with suspected plagiarism incidents.; Geoffrey T Crisp; The author retains the copyright for this work, while granting the International Journal for Educational Integrity the exclusive right of first publication.

In this paper, we focus on plagiarism in answers to computer programming assignments, where students mix and/or modify one or more original solutions to obtain counterfeits. Although several software tools have been developed to help the tedious and time consuming task of detecting plagiarism, little has been done to assess their quality, because determining the real authorship of the whole submission corpus is practically impossible for markers. In this paper, we present a grammar evolution technique which generates benchmarks for testing plagiarism detection tools. Given a programming language...

peer-reviewed; A variety of free and commercial software applications designed to detect plagiarism from Internet sources has appeared in recent years. However, their effectiveness and impact on student behaviour has been assumed rather than confirmed. The study presented here explores the responses and perceptions of a group of first year students at an Irish university after their first contact with anti-plagiarism software in the context of peer-reviewed assignments. The results indicate that the use of anti-plagiarism software led to a decrease in Internet plagiarism and to lower grades being awarded in peer reviews. Additionally, students were found to have a positive attitude towards the anti-plagiarism software in the context of peer reviewed assignments. Implications for educators on the use of this software are discussed.

Widespread concern in the academic literature and the general media indicate that universities face an ongoing problem with student plagiarism in assessments. This paper describes and evaluates a unique assignment developed to provide second year accounting students with an understanding of plagiarism within the direct context of their study discipline. The assignment required students to undertake two key tasks: first, to identify and correct deliberate instances of plagiarism in a pre-prepared essay on an accounting topic; and second, to prepare their own correctly referenced short essay answer to a question on the same accounting subject. Detailed feedback from student evaluation questionnaires for two years indicated that students perceived that the assignment had successfully enhanced their understanding of plagiarism and, at the same time, formed an effective way for them to learn about a relevant accounting issue.; Sue McGowan and Margaret Lightbody

Currently there is an increase in the occurrence of plagiarism in varied types of academic texts. Therefore, in agreement with the Brazilian Coordination of Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) policies, Brazilian higher education institutions should establish guidelines for the detection and inhibition of academic plagiarism. However, the notion of plagiarism is extremely complex, since the ability of textual construction acquired during education is also developed using others' words. Thus, it is necessary to better know the concept of plagiarism and its implications, as well as the consequences of plagiarism and the punishments that may result from it. Consequently, rules and policies to be established will be better founded in order to address the problem of plagiarism in academic texts in a comprehensive and consistent way, not only to inhibit plagiarism but also to promote education on how is possible to create texts in an original fashion.

Plagiarism has become more common in both dental and medical communities. Most of the writers do not know that plagiarism is a serious problem. Plagiarism can range from simple dishonesty (minor copy paste/any discrepancy) to a more serious problem (major discrepancy/duplication of manuscript) when the authors do cut-copy-paste from the original source without giving adequate credit to the main source. When we search databases like PubMed/MedLine there is a lot of information regarding plagiarism. However, it is still a current topic of interest to all the researchers to know how to avoid plagiarism. It's time to every young researcher to know ethical guidelines while writing any scientific publications. By using one's own ideas, we can write the paper completely without looking at the original source. Specific words from the source can be added by using quotations and citing them which can help in not only supporting your work and amplifying ideas but also avoids plagiarism. It is compulsory to all the authors, reviewers and editors of all the scientific journals to know about the plagiarism and how to avoid it by following ethical guidelines and use of plagiarism detection software while scientific writing.

peer-reviewed; Purpose – This paper seeks to contribute to entrepreneurship education research by exploring entrepreneurship students' views of plagiarism, and their ability to recognise and avoid plagiarism. Design/methodology/approach – The study is based on a questionnaire administered to 205 undergraduate university entrepreneurship students, combining self-reported data with behavioural measures. Findings – The results illustrate that, although entrepreneurship students have a clear conceptual understanding of plagiarism and how to avoid it, and they demonstrate an ability to accurately recognise material which needs to be referenced, they do not see use of non-referenced material as being in breach of academic guidelines. The students also perceive lecturers to be more concerned with plagiarism than the students themselves or the university. Research limitations/implications – The research identifies a clear divergence between students' claims about their ethical stance regarding plagiarism and their ability to recognise it as a breach of academic guidelines. Practical implications – The practical implications for entrepreneurship education are: first, the university needs to emphasise to entrepreneurship students that plagiarism is a breach of academic guidelines which will be treated as a serious offence. Second...

This paper introduces AntiPlag, an advanced plagiarism detection tool intended for use on student texts. It is capable of both hermetic detection that scrutinizes only local collections of documents (other students' texts and lecture materials, for example) and web plagiarism detection, in which the aim is at identifying instances of plagiarism that have been sourced from the Internet. The main feature of the system is the sampling-based web plagiarism detection, a novel approach to plagiarism detection that is based on combining web and hermetic search technologies. The system uses standard web search engines to locate documents on the Internet that might have been used as sources of plagiarism by the writer of a text. During this sampling phase, the suspected sources are downloaded, converted to ASCII text and saved to the local database so that they can be later processed by using the hermetic detection methods. We evaluated the system by using a test set that contained instances of verbatim copying as well as texts in which plagiarism was concealed by minor editing, replacing words with synonyms and by paraphrasing. We compared the results achieved by AntiPlag to an earlier evaluation study of four web plagiarism detection systems...

peer-reviewed; A variety of anti-plagiarism software applications have appeared in recent years, but the pedagogical and institutional practices underpinning their use remains largely unexplored. It is essential to increase the amount of evidence-based literature that investigates the use of anti-plagiarism software in higher education. In the light of this, this chapter explores the integration of anti-plagiarism software in an Irish university since early 2006 and the progress made to date. We use data gathered from our own context to show how instructors are using this software to date, what trends emerge and what can be deduced about the adoption of the system to guide future research questions. Best practices are suggested for educators in order to help them to use anti-plagiarism software in proactive, positive, and pedagogically sound ways.

More often than not, there exists some form of infringement relating to the use of other authors' work. This is particularly so in instances in which novice authors make use of the information available within the cyber-digital environment. The article explains the meaning of plagiarism and describes the many manifestations thereof, with the primary aim of providing guidance to novice authors.
