This paper discusses patriarchy as a normative discourse on family roles, as patriarchal values have crossed centuries and still mark today’s family constitution. Patriarchy linked to capitalism is also discussed as one possible explanation for women’s oppression in the social system. In spite of social and legal achievements about equality rights between men and women...

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT; In these remarks I attempt to think through some of the consequences of the way we conceive and live our desires. I try to contrast those desires with both our idea of freedom and the way we usually understand nature. This takes me quickly to issues such as pornography, male identity and then to how we gain and preserve our self-esteem. This...

This chapter explores the concept of empowered mothering, defined by O’Reilly (2007:798) as “a general resistance to patriarchal motherhood”, in Cape Verde. It examines how Cape Verdean transnational family relations, profoundly marked by poverty and emigration, call for a rethinking of the concept of patriarchy. Building on this approach, the chapter explores a more nuanced interpretation of empowered mothering. It takes into account, not only the particularities of the Cape Verdean context, but also the significance of the women’s phenomenology, analyzed in terms of the inner conversation (Archer 2000). Based on anthropological fieldwork (2008-2010) amidst student Cape Verdean mothers in Porto, Portugal, the chapter demonstrates how, by focusing on the interplay between external influences and subjectivities, the difficulties the women encounter and the ways in which they deal with them, cannot easily be pigeon holed into dichotomous classifications of “empowered” versus “disempowered” mothering.; Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia

American Horror Story: Coven (2013-2014) is an original TV series created by Ryan Murphy and Brian Falchuk that revolves around a group of witches who dwell in a private school owned and run by Cordelia. This teacher is the prototype of the good witch. She is also the daughter of Fiona Goode, the so-called ‘supreme’ among the witches’ community, meaning she is the most talented and powerful witch alive. This character, played on screen by Jessica Lange, is the most vivid embodiment of the evil mother that haunts traditional fairy tales: she is egocentric and her ultimate goal is to keep her physical appearance intact. Undoubtedly the universe within the series appears markedly feminine and overtly addresses gender issues which range from the traditional relation that femininity has with patriarchy to the way female characters are depicted in fairy tales. Within this framework, the purpose of this chapter is to examine how gender issues are dealt with in the series, namely the relation between peers, the bond between mothers and daughters, and the ways femininity develops taking into account the obstacles brought by the counter-power of patriarchy. In this context, it will be challenging to explore how the witch characters are grounded on female stereotypes and clichés...

Patriarchy is a dominating system that establishes male power in social relations as the social-ideological system and the structuring element of several ways of men‟s domination on gender social relations, on organization of social life, on private relations, and on political decision spaces. In this study we enlarge our reflection about patriarchy from the analysis of Forró lyrics, more specifically the variation known as stylized. Of late decades, it is a kind of music that has been receiving a large acceptance all over the national territory, making use of everyday expressions that propagate and make apology to many forms of discrimination, oppression and violence against women. We emphasize that over this study 14 Forró lyrics were analyzed of different styles besides stylized, like the traditional and the double meaning ones. However, we dwelled on the content analysis, particularly in three Stylized Forró lyrics, they are: Tapa na Cara (2008) by Saia Rodada Band; Mulher Roleira (2004), Aviões do Forró Band; and Bomba no Cabaré (2007), Matruz com Leite Band. In order to make a critical analysis of the elements in the lyrics content, we support ourselves on the theoretic-methodological references of the dialectical materialism...

This thesis is consisted of a theoretical and empirical study about the treatment given by media, particularly on telejournalism, to violence against women. It aims to analyze and reflect about the role of media, particularly television, on the process of reproduction of patriarchy system of gender on the context of Brazilian society, from content and narrative news about crimes committed against Andreia Rodrigues and Eliza Samudio. In light of the critical perspective, we seek to apprehend the particularities of patriarchy as a system of domination and subjugation of women, and also reveal the involvement of traditional means of media on reproduction and maintenance of inequality between men and women. To apprehend that reality, we had as guidance a critical social theory, grounded in historical-dialectical materialism which enabled us to apprehend the phenomenon under investigation actually enrolled in a dynamic and contradictory reality. The research had qualitative approach. We appeal to the specialized literature of the area from classical and contemporary authors. We conducted a content analysis of categorized matters, and interviews with individuals involved in issues of gender and / or communication. The critical examination of the matters indicated that television journalism is permeated by the contradictions inherent in social life...

My thesis explored the idea that inequality is a human-made perspective that has been informed concurrently through social and metaphysical structures. My intent has been to show how inequality as a learned man-made system of consciousness has played a pivotal role in justifying the exploitation of other cultures and the environment in the name of progress, advancement and human destiny. I have explored the idea that anthropocentrism and ethno-centric patriarchy has been woven so deeply into the fabric of modern perception that we are largely unconscious of its existence, even while we reap the results in both environmental and social degradation. My thesis has argued that a metaphysics, which supports equality, would result in a different value system that would prioritize diversity of life above and beyond human advancement, and emphasize cross-species interconnectedness thereby reducing the risk of exploitation inherent in the existing globally driven capitalist system.

This writing its a proposal that could mean a small advance in the gender history. It focuses in early modern history, and is the starting point of patriarchy: state building, Trento, are events that will be felt strongly their mark on the family and gender relations. The proposal shows the importance of studying gender in the family setting from the concept of strategy. The family strategy, reproductive hierarchy and authority, but driving social mobility, explains the construction, meaning and inhibitions in gender relations.

This is a historical review of the concepts of gender, class, and race employed in recently institutionalised feminist economics. After tracing the origins and objectives of this new branch in economics, we analyse the interlinks and hierarchies between gender, class and race, based on the wide literature concerning feminist economics appearing mainly in the United States in recent years. Weighing the results encourages a calling into question of the inherited idea of patriarchy...

In this article I argue that indigenous women have a multifaceted experience of domination that challenges the monistic understanding of social structure through patriarchy, ethnic domination or social class. Indigenous women question an oppressive and interconnected world system. This same reality allows them to construct collective subjects non solely centred in ethnic, gendered and class factors, but as creators of new liberating ways of life that go beyond unilateral perspectives in emancipatory processes. Thus...

Since the disintegration of the communist camp the Democratic People's Republic of Korea has undergone a profound change in interpreting its raison d'etra in the world. Its leadership bly believes that it has a mission to carry forward by itself the 'yes' civilisation of communism abandoned by its former allies. This new sense of mission has sharpened the regime' s insecurity, leading it to explore a nuclear option and redouble its efforts to militarise. It also sparked domestic debate within the ruling class regarding ideological orthodoxy, what was and what was not the legacy of the Great Leader, and what the scope of authority of his successor ought to be. This in turn led to the re-emergence of latent factional disputes within the Korean Workers' Party along ideological and personalistic lines. In addition, with the demise of President Kim Il Sung, the North Korean political world came to witness a new kind of politics practised by his heir, son Kim Jong-il: instead of the politics of patriarchy he was compelled to engage in the politics of filial piety. Lacking impeccable and long-standing credentials and the leadership qualities of his father, Kim Jong-il had to strengthen his own legitimacy by resorting to time-honoured Korean traditions - preaching traditional Confucian values to the public...

This paper will examine how male and female character interactions in Ernest Hemingway’s The Garden of Eden and Wilkie Collins’s The Woman in White expose the internalization, normalization, and perpetuation of current modes of patriarchy in terms of gender roles through their presentations of androgyny. This paper highlights the parallels of gender construction and the interaction within the social relations depicted in these two novels, which have not been compared previously. The premise, based on the psychoanalytic theories of Jacques Lacan and cultural materialism of Raymond Williams, is that fiction reflects historical and contemporary social relations. Lacanian and feminist interpretations have both been conducted on literature written by Collins and Hemingway; however, neither look at these particular novels as two examples for the same contemporary phenomenon of 21st century patriarchal interpellation. This paper most similarly follows the work of Slavoj Žižek who analyzes contemporary social relations through film (including classics such as Casablanca and works by Alfred Hitchcock) and other aspects of popular culture. This project’s contribution and uniqueness lie with the way it applies theory to these particular literary works...

Does patriarchy still exist? In 2011 the “Inter-university working group on women’s political subjectivity” began its trajectory of study and analysis beginning from this question and the ensuing reflection on whether or not complex contemporary societies retain a patriarchal structure. Patriarchy seems to have become softer, more seductive and persuasive only in terms of rhetoric: in reality, it has maintained all its most grim and violent features. Rather than disappearing, patriarchy appears to have honed its skills and strategies of adaptation in relation to continuously and rapidly evolving contemporary contexts. “Adaptive” patriarchy thus functions as a system capable of continuously and swiftly repositioning mechanisms and rhetorics of domination and control over women. From this perspective, the rhetoric of choice appears to be an expression of the adaptive character of patriarchy: a model of femininity that is actually not so different than the stereotypes of the past has successfully established itself as something new, silencing anyone who does not intend to adopt this model.

The question on gender inequalities sounds strange in the circles of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Southern Africa. Currently, issues of hegemonic systems of patriarchy and kyriarchy are not openly discussed given the existence of several women and men ministries introduced in the church. The challenge and fact remain: the institution continues to fail many women and men based on its perennial patriarchal and kyriarchal systems, practices and culture. The current structure and culture of teaching, management, leadership and governance do not favour the course of women. The presence of the prayer women's league (PWL) as a women ministry structure deepens the pain and scars of patriarchy and kyriarchy. In fact the course and commitment for women space and support remain a mere matter of decorum and nothing else. The article questions the structure and culture in the church that deliberately undermines women in the household of God. This article will also aim to challenge how systems and processes oppress and silence women. A number of case studies will be cited as examples in this regard. The work of the PWL within ELCSA will be highlighted as a lame dog without teeth to bite but remain a compromised God's mission.

According to Daly, the church doctrines on the Triune God, Christology, Mariology and the Fall are all myths, originated from, and as a result of, patriarchy. Daly deals with many topics from a woman's viewpoint such as deity, evil, Christology, morality and the church. Daly contends throughout her works that women's power has been stolen from them through the ingrained structures of patriarchy and that women have to reclaim what is theirs. Daly believes that this means the castration of patriarchal language and images that are part of the structures of a sexist world. She sees patriarchy as a world religion and believes that all religions are subjects of patriarchy - living off female energy. Without any doubt, historically women were marginalised: not only in society but also within the church. However with this said, this article will contend that Daly has succumbed to her anger and rage against the patriarchal structures that oppressed her - and other women - placing the blame squarely on God. Daly rejected God as divine omnipotent, divine immutable and divine providence and objected to the fact that God is viewed as being changeless. The wrong ideas of God's existence were a result of androcentric theological teachings and doctrines...
