In this paper we review two recent paradigmatic shifts and consider how a two-way flow in innovation has been critical to the emergence of new thinking and new practices. The first area relates to our understanding of the nature of public health systems and the shift from a medical paradigm to a more holistic paradigm which emphasises the social, economic and environmental origins of ill-health and looks to these as key arenas in which to tackle persistent inequalities in populations’ health experiences. In respect of this paradigmatic shift, it is argued, developing countries were in advance of their more developed counterparts. Specifically, the Alma Ata Declaration and the Primary Health Care Approach which was central to its implementation pre-figured elements of what was to be called in developed countries The New Public Health such as the need for greater community involvement and recognition of the importance of other sectors in determining health outcomes. But this paradigmatic shift added a new complexity to our understanding which made the identification of appropriate policy responses increasingly difficult. However, a parallel shift was taking place in the cognate field of operational research/systems analysis (OR/SA) which was adding greatly to our ability to analyse and to identify key points of intervention in complex systems. This led to the emergence of new techniques for problem structuring which overcame many of the limitations of formal mathematical models which characterised the old paradigm. In this paradigmatic shift developed countries have led the way...

This research was conducted based on the reading and interpretation of studies conducted by Grün (1996) regarding the inexistence of the environment in modern education. To understand if the environment is present, and in which forms modern education in public high schools of a municipality in the countryside of southern Minas Gerais, Brazil, we analyzed their Pedagogical Political Projects (PPPs). This analysis allow us to identify the presence or absence of socioenvironmental issues. For this, we used a hermeneutic methodology. Therefore, the development of this study was based on a documental type qualitative research. In the school PPPs analyzed, we found expressions and languages that reduce the ample dimension the environment can present. This reducing can be understood as “paradigmatic traps” (GUIMARÃES; QUEIROZ; PLÁCIDO, 2014) that, historically, influence and are reproduced in education. This work contributes in showing the importance of school PPPs as epistemological space, as well as for the action of educators. We expect it to reveal potential allies that opt for the educative perspective, that education should be environmental.; O problema desta pesquisa iniciou-se a partir da leitura e interpretação de estudos de Grün (1996) sobre a inexistência do ambiente na educação moderna.

Shakespeare's dramatic, poetic narratives combine language functions overlooked when readers think of his texts as "plays" and become absorbed in the "story" as only a sequence of events. This study explores reader response to poetry and narrative, points out the different thought processes followed when encountering the two, and reveals new perspectives on the texts by integrating associative, paradigmatic thought with logical, syntagmatic thought. By treating myth as psychosocial process, this analysis shows how Shakespeare both presents and deconstructs his culture's assumptions in the "play" of words, the "play" of one character's "truths" against another's, and the revealing "play" between language and action. Three categories of myth function become visible: moribund, living, and fictive. Shakespeare often demonstrates the thrust of the living myth by drawing upon aspects of moribund myth in literary conventions, informing allusions, folklore, and source materials; he then provides a counterthrust at cultural assumptions through the language of defamiliarization--often spoken by his fool figures. He explodes the fictive myth--our "willing suspension of disbelief"--by self-reflexive language which upsets our illusionary sense of control over language and human destiny. Reading Cycle Process analysis is part of this study: the dramatist's sources...

Commonalities and differences between Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior and the paradigmatic behaviorism (PB) approach are described as a means of introducing the latter to behavior analysis. The focus is on treating the topic of rule-governed behavior—a topic of current interest in behavior analysis in addressing the challenge of cognitive psychology—within the PB framework. Dealing behaviorally with traditional psychology interests is considered important in PB, and this article aims to advance toward that goal. PB has presented a framework that deals with not only the behavioral description of language but also with language function as well as language acquisition. This includes a treatment of the manner in which verbal stimuli generally can control motor behavior. This framework includes analyses in addition to those present in the behavior analytic framework, along with empirical developments, and these can be used to enhance a behavioral understanding of important parts of verbal behavior and the effects of verbal stimuli on behavior, including rule-governed phenomena. Our purpose is to use the particular topic of rule-governed behavior to argue that a more explicit interaction between radical and paradigmatic behaviorism would advance behaviorism and also enable it to have a stronger impact upon psychology and the scientific community.

Paradigmatic analysis consists in the segmentation of a musical piece through the identification of relations between different parts of the piece, and the classification of the identified segments into categories. In this paper we describe how a genetic programming system can be used to make the paradigmatic analysis of monophonic musical pieces, using a simple fitness function inspired in the Kolmogorov complexity estimation. We make use of automatically defined functions in order to represent segments. Relations are made explicit through the reuse of segments and the application of transformations to these segments.

Complex networks are an important paradigm of modern complex systems sciences which allows quantitatively assessing the structural properties of systems composed of different interacting entities. During the last years, intensive efforts have been spent on applying network-based concepts also for the analysis of dynamically relevant higher-order statistical properties of time series. Notably, many corresponding approaches are closely related with the concept of recurrence in phase space. In this paper, we review recent methodological advances in time series analysis based on complex networks, with a special emphasis on methods founded on recurrence plots. The potentials and limitations of the individual methods are discussed and illustrated for paradigmatic examples of dynamical systems as well as for real-world time series. Complex network measures are shown to provide information about structural features of dynamical systems that are complementary to those characterized by other methods of time series analysis and, hence, substantially enrich the knowledge gathered from other existing (linear as well as nonlinear) approaches.; Comment: To be published in International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos (2011)

It has long been conjectured that hypothesis spaces suitable for data that is compositional in nature, such as text or images, may be more efficiently represented with deep hierarchical architectures than with shallow ones. Despite the vast empirical evidence, formal arguments to date are limited and do not capture the kind of networks used in practice. Using tensor factorization, we derive a universal hypothesis space implemented by an arithmetic circuit over functions applied to local data structures (e.g. image patches). The resulting networks first pass the input through a representation layer, and then proceed with a sequence of layers comprising sum followed by product-pooling, where sum corresponds to the widely used convolution operator. The hierarchical structure of networks is born from factorizations of tensors based on the linear weights of the arithmetic circuits. We show that a shallow network corresponds to a rank-1 decomposition, whereas a deep network corresponds to a Hierarchical Tucker (HT) decomposition. Log-space computation for numerical stability transforms the networks into SimNets. In its basic form, our main theoretical result shows that the set of polynomially sized rank-1 decomposable tensors has measure zero in the parameter space of polynomially sized HT decomposable tensors. In deep learning terminology...

The fact that more specific or low-level morphological patterns may coexist with the most general or abstract ones is a characteristic insight of Cognitive Morphology. According to the bottom- up approach of the model, it is even to be expected that low-level patterns may have a more relevant role than the most inclusive and abstract ones. On the basis of the analysis of an aspect of Catalan inflection (velar verbs of the second conjugation) and one aspect of Catalan wordformation (complex words with the prefixoid radio-), we will show the advantages of incorporating to the model salient low-level patterns and the local paradigmatic relations in which they are based.

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe deaf college students’ perceptions of their experiences learning academic English literacy vis à vis their teachers. The study examined the narrated academic English literacy acquisition experiences and practices of 11 deaf and hard-of-hearing students at a hearing university with a large deaf student population. Through paradigmatic analysis of narrative data, the study located common themes, which revealed students’ perceptions of academic English literacy acquisition, particularly with regard to their teachers. Methods employed in the study were phenomenological interviewing and recursive analysis. The primary data sources were participant interviews and a focus group. Analysis was conducted through recursive interaction with the data, in which repeated reviews served to first elicit themes and meanings and then confirm interpretation of same. The study resulted in the following findings: Participants’ experiences resulted in a preference for instructors who are highly competent communicators, and these tended to be deaf instructors. Participants encountered communication challenges, including the inability of instructors to sign clearly or to understand what their students were saying to them...

The present study describes the phenomenon of paradigmatic ruptures proliferation in the biomedical literature. We reconstruct physiological theory starting from the initial experiences of Claude Bernard - its paradigmatic exemplar - using a modified version of the structuralistic conception of theories, which characterises them by its exemplars...

This thesis centers on that aspect of superpower strategic nuclear systems that lies beyond pure deterrence. Much has been offered under the rubric of deterrence, but little analysis of compellence has been attempted. Considering the widespread criticisms of deterrence theory, this is surprising. A comprehensive look at nuclear strategy from the conceptual framework of compellence helps clarify the limits of deterrence and indicates that deterrence and compellence are increasingly interrelated. To demonstrate these assertions, this dissertation provides a quantitative and qualitative analysis of intercontinental nuclear systems. The thesis is that nuclear strategy in the United States and the Soviet Union from 1970-1986 may be described at least equally well by compellence rather than deterrence. By looking closely at technological capabilities, the real capability of these nuclear systems can be more accurately determined. This analysis includes an assessment of how these nuclear systems could interact in combat, based on a Soviet correlation of nuclear forces model. This is the first time in the West that this model has been used for this purpose. It provides a unique Soviet perspective on nuclear strategy. This dissertation begins with the theoretical basis of deterrence and compellence...

This article overviews the important ethical and legal challenges of different steps of the personalized medicine journey such as research, prevention, diagnosis and treatment by discussing paradigmatic examples including biobanks, genetic tests and gene therapy. Scientific progress in the area of genetics, the completion of the Human Genome Project and the ability to sequence genomes for competitive prices have offered the promise of revolutionizing healthcare and raised important challenges to classical paradigms in the biomedical law and ethics fields. Issues such as informed consent, privacy and confidentiality, and discrimination require particular analysis in this context. In the last years the concept of personalized medicine has been a source of considerable hype and hope. Law and ethics should be important allies to limit the former and potentiate the later.

The purpose of this article is to contrapose the propositions on power, class and political domination presented by a particular interpretation of Marxism - structuralist Marxism - through a critical dialogue with one of its most paradigmatic authors: Nicos Poulantzas. The article states, against Poulantzas suggestions, that the insertion of the concept of "élite" in theoretical Marxism may produce positive effects on it, specially making the classist analysis of politics scientifically manageable.
