We expand the eclectic paradigm into a model of global strategic management and apply the latter to the analysis of the impact of the Sep. 11th terrorist attacks on the MNEs’ performance to investigate the effect of exogenous shocks on the global strategies of firms. First, we integrate MNE resources and capabilities, strategy, and structure with the eclectic paradigm. Then we focus specifically on location attractiveness to examine how MNEs adjust internal factors with the exogenous distortions caused by an extreme environmental shock. We suggest that this adjustment is carried out at four levels: resources and capabilities, strategy, structure, and choice of location which jointly determine MNEs’ performance. Although we restrict the application of this model of global strategic management to the post-Sep. 11th, our model may be applied to other extreme events that change, at least partly, the worldwide, or regional, economic order.

In the last decades, health monitoring systems have gained an increasing importance in our society. The main purpose of these systems is to support the engineers to get more insight into the behavior of structures under service conditions, so they can optimize and improve maintenance programs and, hopefully, to avoid structural failures or disasters. It is possible to integrate these systems in any type of civil or mechanical infrastructure. However, in this dissertation, the preferential targets are the civil infrastructures with major strategically importance in the social environment, such as bridges and viaducts. Therefore, the goal of this dissertation is (i) to review the most recent bridge collapses in order to unveil the main causes and challenges posed by those catastrophic events; (ii) to review the concept and need of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of bridges as well as its associated potential for significant life-safety and economic benefits; and (iii) to study the applicability of the SHM concepts. Due to recent promising research developments, the SHM process is posed in the context of the Statistical Pattern Recognition (SPR) paradigm, which tries to implement a damage identification strategy based on the comparison of different state conditions. The applicability of the SHM-SPR paradigm is studied by applying its concepts in two separate cases: firstly on data sets from a base-excited three-story frame structure...

In this paper, we describe a study carried out in a Portuguese Polytechnic Institute, aimed to identify and characterize the implementation level of the Bologna Paradigm. The used questionnaire was completed in the academic year of 2008/2009 providing data at curricular unit, course and school levels. Regarding the changes in teaching learning activities, the answers related to “stopped using” showed that no activity was significantly abandoned. For the answers to “started to use”, the higher percentages were concentrated on: Electronic communications (24%); Tutorial orientation (14%); Presentation with themes for discussion (14%); Participation in on line discussion forum (12%); Information research on line (10%). Regarding the changes in the evaluation elements, the answers to “stopped using” showed that no element was significantly abandoned. The answers to “started to use” had the higher percentages mainly on: Individual activities on distance learning (12%); Group work related to classroom (8%); Group presentations (8%). As a more general conclusion, we can say that the most expected changes with the Paradigm of Bologna have had low levels of adoption. No significant differences were found between the two schools of technology...

The issue of increasing unfunded pension liabilities of state and local governments has drawn increasing attentions in the last few years, especially after the 2008 stock market downturn. To maintain sustainability many state and local governments have put public pension reform at the top of their priority list. Previous research and practices provide two strategies to reform the current pension systems: Incremental changes to amend the existing defined benefit plans (DB plans), and the pension model switch from the DB model to defined contribution plans (DC plans). This study aims to uncover reform strategies to cope for public pension systems. It first examined the appropriateness of the incremental reform strategies by identifying the determinants of the financial solvency of DB plans, utilizing the existing panel data of 151 local DB plans in Florida municipalities. Second, it gathered the primary data through the surveys and interviews with the Finance and HR directors in Florida local governments to analyze their perceptions of public pension reform and reveal their readiness to conduct the public pension paradigm switch. These approaches revealed the critical interperiod equity issue along with the impact of the two-tier benefit structure during the recent pension reform. The results suggest that incremental reform strategies that reduce benefits and increase contributions are not effective in improving the financial solvency of public DB plans. The alternative reform approach—the DB-to-DC transition—is attractive to local governments because it will relieve the employer of the pension cost burden and transfer the investment risk to employees themselves. The transition is also politically palatable because the taxpayer sentiment is not supportive of what are perceived to be generous retirement benefit of public employees. Meanwhile...

International migration between the European Union (EU) and Australia has a long history. However, the pattern of this migrational flow has undergone some profound changes in the last decade. This paper provides an Australian-end perspective on these changes using the 2001 Census of Population and Housing, arrival/departure information and survey results to establish the nature and scale of these changes. Australia is recognised, along with Canada, the United States and New Zealand, as a ‘traditional country of immigration’ and the EU has been one of the largest single suppliers of settlers to Australia with 12 percent of Australians at the 2001 Census being born in the EU and a similar number being Australian-born with a EU-born parent. However, with the massive global shifts occurring in international migration, the migration relationship has become much more complex. On the one hand, Australia has entered a new paradigm of international migration in which non-permanent settlement movements have assumed central significance. The EU has been a major source of such people moving to Australia. There has long been a substantial counter flow of people moving from Australia to the EU among which former settlers have dominated. In recent years the numbers of Australian born moving on a permanent or long-term basis to the EU has increased substantially. It is argued that the bulk of research knowledge in Australia is based on the settlement paradigm which is now only a minor part of migration between Australia and Europe. There is a need to reorient research activity in Australia to encompass the new forms of movement. In addition to identifying the scale of the new forms of international migration influencing movements between the EU and Australia...

It is a well-known fact that actions can be performed faster and more efficiently when one can prepare for the exact time point when they will be required. In the laboratory, participants express faster reaction times (RT) to a target stimulus when it is preceded by a warning signal. The warning signal is assumed to reduce the participants' temporal uncertainty about the occurrence of the target stimulus because it allows participants to anticipate the target stimulus and thus to prepare for its occurrence. An important question in the investigation of this temporal preparation effect concerns which stages in the chain of information processing from stimulus presentation to response benefit from temporal preparation. Knowing this locus is a prerequisite for the further theoretical development of the concept of temporal preparation. For a long time, the general consensus was that temporal preparation exerts its influence exclusively on motor processing. However, recent studies show that temporal preparation also improves stimulus discrimination and thus suggest an influence also on perceptual stimulus processing. This might be due to a decreased duration of perceptual processes which would in turn predict a shorter perceptual latency - that is...

Dietary advice in Australia, understood as recommendations as to a 'better' way of eating directed to the general population, has changed significantly as a result of advances in nutritional science and, in accordance with the structure of scientific revolutions outlined by Thomas Kuhn, by a series of 'paradigm shifts'. These occur when the existing theory or paradigm becomes inadequate to explain observations or research findings and is discarded in favour of a new paradigm. In the history of dietary advice in Australia, paradigm shifts are associated with the discovery of vitamins at the beginning of the twentieth century and recognition of the role of fat in heart disease in the second half of the twentieth century. In both instances, a consequence of the paradigm shift was dramatic changes in dietary advice. While research has played, and continues to play, a significant role in the shaping of dietary advice, the direction of nutrition research is increasingly influenced by commercial considerations, which has implications for future dietary advice.; Barbara Santich; The definitive version is available at www.blackwell-synergy.com

My aim in this paper is first to develop the question raised by Habermas concerning the possibilities of a history of philosophy oriented to praxis. This line of analysis will let see the internal connection between theory and praxis within the framework of a materialistic understanding of philosophy. Secondly, I will show how this question becomes a reconstruction of historical materialism in the context of an analysis of the processes which characterise social transformations. With this background Habermas moves from the paradigm of production to that of language seeking a foundation Theory of Communicative Action. Reconstruction...

The paradigm is purely linguistic (paradeigma), an example; and is given by analogy between singularities. We know that our lifestyle choices and experiences can influence our health: the food we eat, the environment we live in, and the social relationships we form can all have an impact on our development and health. But what if events that occur before we are even born, during our early stages of development, or even before we are conceived, determine our health in adulthood? What if our life experiences affect the health of our future, unborn descendants? Epigenetics is a field that gives us insight into the relationship between our surrounding environment and our genetic makeup, addressing the nature-nurture interaction. Epigenetics is the study of the regulation of genes, specifically how genes are activated--or turned on--and deactivated--turned off. Environmental factors such as stress, nutrition, pollution, toxins, and many others, can affect the regulation of genes without altering the genome, and this dysregulation can lead to the development of disease states. Epigenetics describes how these environmental factors can become molecularly embodied in our cells. With this new field we must ask: to what extent (if at all) does epigenetics fundamentally change our way of thinking about human (1) mental and (2) physical health? Do new insights into epigenetic processes represent a paradigm shift...

This study implemented the Decision-Oriented Educational Research (DOER)paradigm developed by William Cooley and William Bickel (1985) and evaluated the effectiveness of this paradigm in a non-traditional university academic program. The main features of the DOERparadigmare: a client-centered orientation; a methodologically eclectic approach; monitoring and tailoring; an emphasis upon computer-based information systems; use of program documentation; and use and dissemination of evaluation results. The study recorded, documented and analyzed all interactions between the primary client and the researcher. This analysis identified and assessed recurring themes in the perceptions and observations of the researcher regarding the implementation and effectiveness of the DOERparadigm. It also provided depictions of the primary client and the researcher's specific interactions. Specific changes in or the development of program policies were recorded and analyzed to determine what impact, if any, DOER had upon policy formulation. The primary client's interview responses were summarized and analyzed to assess his opinions and perceptions on the effectiveness of DOERin aiding his policy decisions. The major findings of this study included: (a) Amethodologically eclectic approach was needed to address the primary client's information request: (b) In order to use a methodologically eclectic approach...

This paper describes a rule-based multiset programming paradigm, as a unifying theme for biological, chemical, DNA, physical and molecular computations. The computations are interpreted as the outcome arising out of deterministic, nondeterministic or stochastic interaction among elements in a multiset object space which includes the environment. These interactions are like chemical reactions and the evolution of the multiset can mimic the biological evolution. Since the reaction rules are inherently parallel, any number of actions can be performed cooperatively or competitively among the subsets of elements, so that the elements evolve toward an equilibrium or an emergent state. Hence, this paradigm is widely applicable; e.g., to conventional algorithms, evolutionary algorithms, Markov chain Monte Carlo based Bayesian inference, genetic algorithms, self-organized criticality and active walker models (swarm and ant intelligence), DNA and molecular computing. Practical realisation of this paradigm is achieved through a coordination programming language using Multiset and transactions. This paradigm permits carrying out parts or all of the computations independently on distinct processors and is eminently suitable for cluster and grid computing.

Rule-Based Programming Paradigm: A Formal Basis for Biological, Chemical and Physical Computation

A rule-based programming paradigm is described as a formal basis for biological, chemical and physical computations. In this paradigm, the computations are interpreted as the outcome arising out of interaction of elements in an object space. The interactions can create new elements (or same elements with modified attributes) or annihilate old elements according to specific rules. Since the interaction rules are inherently parallel, any number of actions can be performed cooperatively or competitively among the subsets of elements, so that the elements evolve toward an equilibrium or unstable or chaotic state. Such an evolution may retain certain invariant properties of the attributes of the elements. The object space resembles Gibbsian ensemble that corresponds to a distribution of points in the space of positions and momenta (called phase space). It permits the introduction of probabilities in rule applications. As each element of the ensemble changes over time, its phase point is carried into a new phase point. The evolution of this probability cloud in phase space corresponds to a distributed probabilistic computation. Thus, this paradigm can handle tor deterministic exact computation when the initial conditions are exactly specified and the trajectory of evolution is deterministic. Also...

http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/1807-1384.2014v11n2p37This research begins with the questioning of a certain paradigmatic crisis that, according to some authors, is not restricted to the scientific modus faciendi, but also reaches knowledge itself, considered under a broader perspective and applied to all our values and relationship among men, nature and society. It’s worth mentioning the crisis that is known as “dominant paradigm”, by which there is an urgent need for a new scientific practice and a new form of knowledge appropriation, one in which the common sense is rescued and receives proper value. This is the proposal of the so called “emerging paradigm” which we believe, paves the way for the heterodoxy of proposals, such as the Intercultural Philosophy, to find conducive soil in the construction of alternative ways, to embrace indigenous knowledge and cultures. Some epistemological aspects that make up the Intercultural Philosophy are described, in particular, its negative view on ethnocentrism. It is argued that this new form of making philosophy meets the requirements of an emerging paradigm; in that it does not favor this or that logos as the “absolute and universal reason”, but allows the expression of other forms of rationality that often clash the standards of what is considered “conventional”...

A core concept in Cornelia Roux's writings is the term 'paradigm shift'. We can for example notice pleas for paradigm shifts in teaching religion, in dealing with the multicultural situation, in concretizing citizenship education, and finally her plea for a paradigm shift towards human rights education. In this essay I will first elaborate on some of Roux's paradigm shifts with a special focus on the role and place of religious education. Then, I will follow up with a plea for strengthening the transformative paradigm in pedagogy. A plea fully combinable with Roux' s views, but especially necessary today as a critical pedagogical counter-voice against dominant neoliberal rhetoric in respect to pedagogy, politics and practices. In a transformative paradigm the aim of education is formulated as personhood formation. It implies that schools assist students in the double process of socialization and individuation, of becoming competent members of communities of practice. Presentation and representation of information, norms and values are interpreted from the perspective of how students are able to transform this into elements of their own participation, in the process of their own personhood formation. A transformative paradigm is inclusive by definition...
