OBJETIVO: testar se existe alteração na resistência adesiva de dois cimentos utilizados na colagem de acessórios ortodônticos ao esmalte dentário bovino, sendo um de polimerização química (Concise ortodôntico) e outro fotopolimerizável (Transbond XT), após a aplicação de cargas contínuas. METODOLOGIA: foram utilizados para este estudo 80 dentes bovinos e 80 braquetes metálicos. O esmalte bovino foi condicionado com ácido fosfórico a 37% por 1 minuto e depois lavado e seco. A aplicação dos adesivos, manipulação e aplicação dos dois cimentos foram feitas de acordo com as instruções dos fabricantes. Após 24 horas, todos os braquetes foram submetidos a cargas contínuas de 30g, 70g e 120g, menos o grupo controle, que não recebeu carga alguma. Os espécimes ficaram imersos em água filtrada por 28 dias dentro de uma estufa a 37°C. Depois deste período, as amostras foram submetidas a testes de cisalhamento em uma Máquina de Ensaios Universal Kratos. Os resultados foram registrados e enviados para análise estatística. CONCLUSÕES: (1) o cimento Concise apresentou maior resistência à remoção que o cimento Transbond XT para todas as cargas utilizadas, (2) não houve diferença estatisticamente significante na resistência adesiva frente às três cargas utilizadas para os dois cimentos testados; (3) no momento da fratura...

O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar em Microscopia Ótica (MO), Espectroscopia micro-Raman (µR) e Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV), a interface adesiva em dentina proporcionada por três sistemas adesivos aplicados in vivo e in vitro. Na condição in vivo, pacientes com primeiros prémolares superiores hígidos indicados para extração, por razões ortodônticas, foram utilizados. Cavidades classe I com 0,5mm além da junção esmalte-dentina foram realizadas, nos dentes, com broca carbide 245 em alta rotação. Foram, então aplicados três sistemas adesivos diferentes foram aplicados, de acordo com as instruções dos respectivos fabricantes: Single Bond (SB-3M), Clearfil SE Bond (CSEB-Kuraray) e One Up Bond-F (OUB-Tokuyama). Aplicados esses, as cavidades foram restauradas incrementalmente com resina composta TPH Spectrum (Dentsply). Em seguida os dentes foram extraídos e armazenados em solução de timol a 0,1%. In Vitro, os mesmos procedimentos foram realizados em pré-molares extraídos. Após os dentes foram levados à uma máquina de cortes e seccionados, com auxílio de um disco de corte em espécimes contendo a interface, com dimensões 2mmx2mmx6mm de comprimento, sendo 2 espécimes para cada dente. O desenvolvimento de lesões de manchas brancas de cárie associadas ao uso do aparelho ortodôntico fixo tem-se tornado um problema clínico importante, devido à dificuldade criada pelo aparelho ortodôntico na higienização dos dentes. Este trabalho teve como objetivos realizar uma revisão de literatura a respeito dos métodos de tratamento e prevenção das manchas brancas de cárie, abordando sua etiologia, diagnóstico, prevalência e implicações clínicas, além de buscar os métodos disponíveis e mais eficazes na remineralização de manchas brancas de cárie. Segundo a literatura encontrada existem diversas formas de prevenir e tratar manchas brancas. Dentre estas estão: educação do paciente para realização de uma correta higiene bucal, administração de fluoretos de forma tópica (aplicação de gel, bochecho, creme dental com flúor e verniz) ou adesiva (materiais liberadores de fluoreto), uso de CPP-ACP sob a forma de pastas ou chicletes e até mesmo a utilização de laser de argônio. Analisando a literatura disponível concluiu-se que os métodos mais utilizados para tratamento da mancha branca são aplicação de flúor gel e de verniz fluoretado. Objective: To evaluate the influence of saliva contamination on shear bond strength and the bond failure pattern of 3 adhesive systems (Transbond XT, AdheSE and Xeno III) on orthodontic metallic brackets bonded to human enamel. Material and Methods: Seventy-two permanent human molars were cut longitudinally in a mesiodistal direction, producing seventy-two specimens randomly divided into six groups. Each system was tested under 2 different enamel conditions: no contamination and contaminated with saliva. In T, A and X groups, the adhesive systems were applied to the enamel surface in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. In TS, AS and XS groups, saliva was applied to enamel surface followed by adhesive system application. The samples were stored in distilled water at 37ºC for 24 h, and then tested for shear bond strength in a universal testing machine (Emic, DL 2000) running at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. After bond failure, the enamel surfaces were observed under an optical microscope at 40x magnification. Results: The control and contaminated groups showed no significant difference in shear bond strength for the same adhesive system. Pós-graduação em Odontologia - FOA; Os recentes materiais de colagem dos acessórios ortodônticos têm visado reduzir o tempo de trabalho do clínico, simplificando o procedimento do condicionamento ácido por meio dos sistemas adesivos autocondicionantes. Todavia, as qualidades adesivas desses materiais ainda demandam ser avaliada. Assim, o presente estudo objetivou avaliar a resistência às forças de compressão de três sistemas adesivos. Cento e oitenta incisivos inferiores bovinos foram seccionados e incluídos em matrizes de resina acrílica, nos quais acessórios ortodônticos foram colados com os sistemas Transbond XT (2 grupos de 30), Transbond XT Plus Self Etching Primer (2 grupos de 30) e Tyrian (2 grupos de 30). Para cada sistema, os testes de resistência foram realizados imediatamente (30 dentes) e 24 horas (30 dentes) após a colagem, em uma máquina de ensaio Versat 2000 (Pantec), utilizando célula de carga de 500 Kgf com uma velocidade de 1mm/minuto, de acordo com a literatura. Following the introduction of the acid-etching technique in enamel surface, direct attachment of orthodontic appliances on the surface of the tooth and/or restorations became a routine procedure in the assembly of the fixed devices. The attainment of a success result is related to the criterion attention to the details and the steps of the bonding technique, as well as, to the knowledge of the characteristics of the adhesive materials and orthodontic brackets. This paper presents some aspects of various types of brackets and adhesives materials.; Após a introdução da técnica de condicionamento ácido sobre o esmalte, a colagem direta de acessórios ortodônticos sobre a superfície do dente e/ou restaurações tornou-se um procedimento de rotina na montagem dos aparelhos fixos. A obtenção de resultados de sucesso está relacionada à criteriosa atenção aos detalhes e aos passos da técnica de colagem, assim como, ao conhecimento das características dos materiais adesivos e dos braquetes ortodônticos. Este trabalho apresenta alguns aspectos a respeito dos vários tipos de braquetes e de materiais adesivos.

Fluoride Release/Uptake from Different Orthodontic Adhesives: A 30-Month Longitudinal Study

The aim of this study was to test the null hypothesis that there is no difference in fluoride release between resin-modified glass ionomer cements (RMGICs) and composites in the long term. The materials were divided into 5 groups: a nonfluoride-releasing composite - Group TXT (Transbond XT), a fluoride-releasing composite - Group QC (Quick-Cure), and three RMGICs - Groups FOLC, FOB and MC (Fuji Ortho LC, Fuji Ortho Band, and Multi-Cure). Fluoride release was measured at time intervals of 1 h, 1, 7, 14, 21 and 29 days, followed by further evaluations performed at 6, 12, 18, 24 and 30 months using selective ion electrodes connected to an ionic analyzer. Fluoride releasing and re-releasing experiments were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney test with the Bonferroni correction. The amount of fluoride released by FOB was larger in comparison with the other adhesives (p=0.01). In the long-term, FOLC and MC had a similar performance (p>0.05). The composites presented a low fluoride release, but fluoride ion uptake and re-release capacity of QC was statistically significant (p<0.05) during the experiment. In conclusion, the null hypothesis was rejected, the RMGIC Fuji Ortho Band and the composite Quick-Cure presented greater fluoride release and re-release capacity when recharged.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present study was to verify the hypothesis that no difference in biocompatibility exists between different orthodontic adhesives. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty male Wistar rats were used in this study and divided into five groups (n=6): Group 1 (control, distilled water), Group 2 (Concise), Group 3 (Xeno III), Group 4 (Transbond XT), and Group 5 (Transbond plus Self-Etching Primer). Two cavities were performed in the subcutaneous dorsum of each animal to place a polyvinyl sponge soaked with 2 drops of the respective adhesive in each surgical loci. Two animals of each group were sacrificed after 7, 15, and 30 days, and their tissues were analyzed by using an optical microscope. RESULTS: At day 7, Groups 3 (Transbond XT) and 4 (Xeno III) showed intense mono- and polymorphonuclear inflammatory infiltrate with no differences between them, whereas Groups 1 (control) and 2 (Concise) showed moderate mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate. At day 15, severe inflammation was observed in Group 3 (Transbond XT) compared to other groups. In Orthodontics, fixed appliances placed in the oral cavity are colonized by microorganisms. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to quantitatively determine the independent bacterial colonization of S. mutans and S. sobrinus in orthodontic composite resins. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seven orthodontic composite adhesives for bonding brackets were selected and classified into 14 groups; (GIm, GIs) Enlight, (GIIm, GIIs) Grengloo, (GIIIm, GIIIs) Kurasper F, (GIVm, GIVs) BeautyOrtho Bond, (GVm, GVs) Transbond CC, (GVIm, GVIs) Turbo Bond II, (GVIIm, GVIIs) Blugloo. 60 blocks of 4x4x1 mm of each orthodontic composite resin were made (total 420 blocks), and gently polished with sand-paper and ultrasonically cleaned. S. mutans and S. sobrinus were independently cultivated. For the quantitative analysis, a radioactive marker was used to codify the bacteria (³H) adhered to the surface of the materials. The blocks were submerged in a solution with microorganisms previously radiolabeled and separated (210 blocks for S. mutans and 210 blocks for S. sobrinus) for 2 hours at 37ºC. Next, the blocks were placed in a combustion system, to capture the residues and measure the radiation. The statistical analysis was calculated with the ANOVA test (Sheffè post-hoc). OBJECTIVE: To determine the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets using color change adhesives that are supposed to aid in removing excess of bonding material and compare them to a traditional adhesive. METHODS: Ninety metallic and ninety ceramic brackets were bonded to bovine incisors using two color change adhesives and a regular one. A tensile stress was applied by a universal testing machine. The teeth were observed in a microscope after debonding in order to determine the Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI). RESULTS: The statistical analysis (ANOVA, Tukey, and Kruskall-Wallis tests) demonstrated that the mean bond strength presented no difference when metallic and ceramic brackets were compared but the bond resistance values were significantly different for the three adhesives used. The most common ARI outcome was the entire adhesive remaining on the enamel. CONCLUSIONS: The bond strength was similar for metallic and ceramic brackets when the same adhesive system was used. ARI scores demonstrated that bonding with these adhesives is safe even when ceramic brackets were used. On the other hand, bond strength was too low for orthodontic purposes when Ortho Lite Cure was used.

OBJECTIVE: development of a new device to be coupled to light-curing units for bonding orthodontic brackets and accessories, and test its efficacy in an in vitro mechanical trial. The inner surface of the device is mirrored and is based on physical concepts of light refraction and reflection. The main advantage of such device is the reduced clinical time needed for bonding and the low possibility of contamination during the process. METHODS: One hundred and twenty specimens were used for testing the shear bond strength of brackets bonded with the device. The Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) was also determined. The sample was divided into 2 groups. In group 1 a halogen light-curing unit was used while in group 2 a led light-curing unit was used. Each group was then subdivided. In subgroups H1 and L1, a conventional light guide rod was used while in subgroups H2 and L2 bonding was performed with the mirrored device coupled to the tip of the guide light rod. RESULTS: The values obtained for the shear bond strength and the ARI in the subgroups were compared. Results showed that there was no statistically significant difference for the shear strength (p > 0.05) and the ARI (p > 0.05) between the subgroups. In Vitro Properties of Orthodontic Adhesives with Fluoride or Amorphous Calcium Phosphate

This in vitro study evaluated the efficacy of orthodontic adhesives with fluoride or amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) in reducing bacterial adhesion and enamel demineralization. Forty human premolars each sectioned buccolingually into three parts were bracketed with control resin (Transbond XT) or adhesives containing ACP (Aegis Ortho) or fluoride (QuickCure). Artificial lesions induced by pH cycling were examined by X-ray photoelectron spectrophotometry (XPS) and polarized light microscopy (PLM). After 28 days, Aegis Ortho demonstrated the lowest calcium and phosphorous content by XPS analysis. After 42 days, reductions in lesion depth areas were 23.6% for Quick Cure and 20.3% for Aegis Ortho (P < 0.05). In the presence of 1% sucrose, adhesion of Streptococcus mutans to Aegis Ortho and Quick Cure was reduced by 41.8% and 37.7% (P < 0.05) as compared to Transbond XT. Composites containing ACP or fluoride reduced bacterial adherence and lesion formation as compared to a composite without ACP or fluoride.

The objective of this study is to assess, in vitro, the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets fixed with remineralizing adhesive systems submitted to thermomechanical cycling, simulating one year of orthodontic treatment. Sixty-four bovine incisor teeth were randomly divided into 4 experimental groups (n = 16): XT: Transbond XT, QC: Quick Cure, OL: Ortholite Color, and SEP: Transbond Plus Self-Etching Primer. The samples were submitted to thermomechanical cycling simulating one year of orthodontic treatment. Shear bond strength tests were carried out using a universal testing machine with a load cell of 50 KgF at 0.5 mm/minute. The samples were examined with a stereomicroscope and a scanning electron microscope (SEM) in order to analyze enamel surface and Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI). Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney (with Bonferroni correction) tests showed a significant difference between the studied groups (p < 0.05). Groups XT, QC, and SEP presented the highest values of adhesive resistance and no statistical differences were found between them. The highest frequency of failures between enamel and adhesive was observed in groups XT, QC, and OL. As new orthodontic resin adhesives continue to be marketed, rapid and sensitive tests for examining their toxic effects at the ' cell and tissue level ' are needed because patient safety has been identifi ed as a legal concept. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity and degree of monomer conversion of orthodontic adhesives over different time periods. Seven adhesives: Transbond® XT, Transbond® Color Change, Quick Cure, EagleBond, Orthobond®, Fill Mágic® and Biofix® were evaluated for their cytotoxicity in L929 fibroblastic cells and for their degree of monomer conversion over different time periods. Three control groups were also analysed: Positive control (C+), consisting of Tween 80 cell detergent; Negative control (C-), consisting of PBS; and cell control (CC), consisting of cells exposed to any material. The dye-uptake technique that involves the absorption of a neutral red dye in viable cells was used for the cytotoxicity evaluation and the degree of conversion was evaluated using spectroscopy with infrared. The results showed the cytotoxicity of the adhesives at 24, 48, 72 and 168 hours. OBJECTIVE: To compare in vitro shear bond strength (SBS) of different orthodontic adhesives in bonding and repeatedly rebonding metal brackets, and to evaluate the bond failure site with the adhesive remnant index (ARI). METHODS: Specimens consisted of 90 extracted human first premolars, randomly divided into three groups (n=30). The adhesives Alpha Plast (AP), ConciseTM (CO) and TransbondTM XT (TB) were used in each group. Three SBS tests were performed, i.e., one at T0 (initial) and the other two at T1 and T2 (first and second rebondings, respectively), observing a 24-hour interval. The tests were performed in a Shimadzu AG-I (10kN) SBS testing machine, at a speed of 0.5 mm/min. RESULTS: SBS data were subjected to ANOVA, Tukey's test and Bonferroni test (p<0.05). For the ARI, the Kruskal Wallis test was performed, followed by the Dunn test. The results revealed that at T0 groups AP and CO showed SBS values that were near, but above TB values; and at T1 and T2, the highest SBS values were observed for the AP group, followed by the CO and TB groups. CONCLUSION: Statistically significant differences were found in SBS between groups AP, CO and TB during bonding and repeated rebondings of unused metal brackets, with group AP achieving the highest SBS value. In Orthodontics, fixed appliances placed in the oral cavity are colonized by microorganisms. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to quantitatively determine the independent bacterial colonization of S. mutans and S. sobrinus in orthodontic composite resins. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seven orthodontic composite adhesives for bonding brackets were selected and classified into 14 groups; (GIm, GIs) Enlight, (GIIm, GIIs) Grengloo, (GIIIm, GIIIs) Kurasper F, (GIVm, GIVs) BeautyOrtho Bond, (GVm, GVs) Transbond CC, (GVIm, GVIs) Turbo Bond II, (GVIIm, GVIIs) Blugloo. 60 blocks of 4x4x1 mm of each orthodontic composite resin were made (total 420 blocks), and gently polished with sand-paper and ultrasonically cleaned. S. mutans and S. sobrinus were independently cultivated. For the quantitative analysis, a radioactive marker was used to codify the bacteria (³H) adhered to the surface of the materials. The blocks were submerged in a solution with microorganisms previously radiolabeled and separated (210 blocks for S. mutans and 210 blocks for S. sobrinus) for 2 hours at 37ºC. Next, the blocks were placed in a combustion system, to capture the residues and measure the radiation. The statistical analysis was calculated with the ANOVA test (Sheffè post-hoc). ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present study was to verify the hypothesis that no difference in biocompatibility exists between different orthodontic adhesives. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty male Wistar rats were used in this study and divided into five groups (n=6): Group 1 (control, distilled water), Group 2 (Concise), Group 3 (Xeno III), Group 4 (Transbond XT), and Group 5 (Transbond plus Self-Etching Primer). Two cavities were performed in the subcutaneous dorsum of each animal to place a polyvinyl sponge soaked with 2 drops of the respective adhesive in each surgical loci. Two animals of each group were sacrificed after 7, 15, and 30 days, and their tissues were analyzed by using an optical microscope. RESULTS: At day 7, Groups 3 (Transbond XT) and 4 (Xeno III) showed intense mono- and polymorphonuclear inflammatory infiltrate with no differences between them, whereas Groups 1 (control) and 2 (Concise) showed moderate mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate. At day 15, severe inflammation was observed in Group 3 (Transbond XT) compared to other groups. At day 30, the same group showed a more expressive mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate compared to other groups. ; Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of two consecutive recycling procedures on the shear bond strength of different orthodontic adhesives. Methods: Edgewise brackets were bonded to the buccal surfaces of 40 bovine incisors using the following bonding materials: Concise (group I), Transbond XT (group II), Smart Bond (group III) and Fuji Ortho (group IV). The teeth were stored in water at 37°C for 24 h, thermocycled between 5 and 55°C, and debonded using an Instron machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. In all groups, the bonded brackets were detached and rebonded after recycling by 50-µm particle aluminum oxide blasting. After the second recording of retentive strengths, the recycling procedure, the rebonding and the shear bond strength test were repeated. Data were analyzed statistically by ANOVA and Tukey’s test at 5% significance level. Results: The results showed that repeated recycling did not interfere in retention of brackets, regardless of the adhesive used. The highest shear bond strength values were obtained after bonding with Transbond XT, independent of the recycling procedure. Conclusion: Repeated bracket recycling using 50-µm aluminum oxide particle air abrasion did not affect the shear bond strength of metallic brackets bonded with different orthodontic adhesives.

Preventive effect of an orthodontic compomer against enamel demineralization around bonded brackets

Orthodontic appliances predispose to the accumulation of plaque due to the great number of retentive sites, which might lead to enamel demineralization adjacent to the accessories. Aim: To assess the effectiveness of a compomer for orthodontic bonding in preventing the formation of white spots around orthodontic brackets. Methods: Forty extracted human premolars were divided into two groups: control group (CG), in which conventional resin Transbond™ XT Light Cure (3M Unitek™) was used to bond the brackets; and experimental group (EG), in which the compomer Transbond™ Plus Color Change (3M Unitek™) was used. pH cycling was performed for 17 days to induce the demineralization process. Enamel on the buccal face was photographed under a stereomicroscope (at 10x magnification) before (t0) and after (t1) pH cycling. The images were used to compare demineralization between the groups by using a visual scale. Results: A statistically significant difference between control and experimental groups was found (p=0.004) showing that the compomer was more efficient than the conventional resin in preventing white spots.
