Background: Angola is one of the African countries with the highest morbidity and mortality rates and a devastating lack of human resources for health, including nursing. The World Health Organization stimulates and takes technical cooperation initiatives for human resource education and training in health and education, with a view to the development of countries in the region. The aim in this study was to identify how nurses affiliated with nursing education institutions perceive the challenges nursing education is facing in Angola. Methods: After consulting the National Directory of Human Resources in Angola, the nurse leaders affiliated with professional nursing education institutions in Angola were invited to participate in the study by email. Data were collected in February 2009 through the focus group technique. The group of participants was focused on the central question: what are the challenges faced for nursing education in your country? To register and understand the information, besides the use of a recorder, the reporters elaborated an interpretative report. Data were coded using content analysis. Results: Fourteen nurses participated in the meeting, most of whom were affiliated with technical nursing education institutions. It was verified that the nurse leaders at technical and higher nursing education institutions in Angola face many challenges...

The aim of this study was to analyse the inclusion of the subject Nursing Care Systems (NCS) in nursing education. This study was based on qualitative desk research and it was conducted in a nursing programme in southern Brazil that offers an integrated curriculum with NCS as a cross-cutting theme. Data were collected from September to December 2012, by examining 15 planning and development workbooks on the cross-disciplinary modules of the programme. Analysis was divided into four stages: exploratory, selective, analytic and interpretive reading. The adopted theoretical framework was Complex Thought of Edgar Morin, according to the principles of relevant knowledge. Results were arranged into two categories: NCS as a crosscutting theme in nursing education: the context, the global and the multidimensional; and strategies for teaching, learning and assessment of NCS: the complex. The study contributes to the debate on the importance of teaching NCS as a crosscutting theme in nursing education.

Scientific production in nursing education field provide important contributions to professional formation and nursing practice. Since we believe this perspective, we carried out a survey aimed at identifying and analyzing nursing education-related articles, building empiric categories from the collected data. This revision is a bibliographical, descriptive and quantitative survey using as source articles published in the Revista da Escola de Enfermagem da USP from 1967 to 2002. We have found 1,137 articles, of which 14.2% refer to nursing education, 89.0% of which are concerned with the undergraduate level. The descriptive analysis of nursing education-related bibliography gives rise to issues concerning the development of research that follow changes in the legislation changes and the demands of the professional market.; Produções científicas na área de ensino em enfermagem fornecem importantes contribuições para a formação de profissionais e exercício da enfermagem. Nursing education history in Brazil was re-visited, beginning with the foundation of the Anna Nery School of Nursing in 1922, followed by the analysis of the teaching programs of 1923, 1926 and 1949, and of the national curriculum for Nursing education of 1962, 1972 and 1994. In spite of the fact that modern Nursing in Brazil was established to qualify nurses to work in public health, since the beginning they were trained in hospitals, with the systematic study of diseases, without giving priority to subjects linked to public health. Although the reformulation that resulted in the 1994 curriculum was committed to the construction of an education proposal that was non-hegemonic in Nursing, the subdivision in medical specialties was preserved, as a result of the adoption of the flexnerian model. The biomedical, individualized and hospital-based model that influenced Nursing education from it origins in Brazil is still present and Nursing education is not focused on the population needs, being therefore antagonistic to the presuppositions of Collective Health.; Buscou-se reconstruir a história do ensino de enfermagem no Brasil desde a criação da Escola de Enfermagem Anna Nery, em 1922, através de seus programas de ensino, de 1923...

The present study seeks to analyze the historical evolution of nursing education at the Hospital Geral de Santo António in Porto, during the period from the creation of the Nursing School in 1896 to the curricular standardization of nursing education in Portugal, introduced in 1947 by Decree-Law No. 36219. Using a qualitative methodology, this historical analysis of original documentation (the reports of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto and the statutes of the Nursing School) revealed a constant scientific updating of both the medical discipline and the concept of healthcare in Portuguese hospitals. A link is also established between the development of the medical profession and that of nursing and ancillary staff as a relevant factor for achieving the aim of improving the quality of care provided. The Nursing School was therefore created, based on the provision of training in medical treatment, the application of dressings, and the concepts of sepsis and antisepsis. In 1935, the course was reformulated and, under its new statutes, theoretical and practical disciplines were given a major role. Finally, in 1947, at the initiative of the government, the nursing curriculum was standardized throughout the whole of the national territory...

Since South Africa became a democratic country in 1994, the higher education sector has been faced with the challenge of transformation and restructuring. The Minister of Education in the Education White Paper 3 stated that "the higher education system must be transformed to redress the past inequities, to serve a new social order, to meet pressing national needs and to respond to realities and opportunities" (Department of Education, 1997:2). Higher education institutions were faced with the realities of impending mergers and collaborations across programmes and between universities and technikons. The Council on Higher Education (CHE) submitted a report to the Minister of Education in February 2002 which proposed the establishment of new institutional and organizational forms within regions (Department of Education, 2002: 7-8). The Minister announced changes in higher education based on his assessment of the proposals submitted by the CHE which resulted in the reduction of the number of higher education institutions from 36 to 21 (Department of Education, 2002:11-20). There were specific implications for nursing education in the Western Cape. In December 2002 the Minister of Education, Kader Asmal announced that with effect from 2005...
