The coordination of health services...

Paper presented at the 9th European Conference on Knowledge Management, Southampton Solent University, Southampton, UK, 4-5 Sep. 2008. URL: http://academic-conferences.org/eckm/eckm2008/eckm08-home.htm; There is growing interest in the nature and scale of scientific collaboration regarding the processes involved with knowledge creation and sharing. One of the possible approaches to developing metrics for this area of research is based on the idea that co-authorship creates a social network of researchers. We present an exploratory study using a social network approach to examine the structure and pattern of knowledge creation and sharing within a Portuguese research community, working in the agricultural field, over the last seven years. The members of this community are with the Instituto Nacional da Investigação Agrária (INIA) which recently became part of a newly created R&D State Laboratory, Instituto Nacional dos Recursos Biológicos (INRB), under the umbrella of the Portuguese Ministry of Agriculture Rural Development and Fisheries. The social network analysis used data from an information system containing the results from all the scientific activities developed in the last seven years by the research community working in INIA. The information system was the major result of AGRO 444 - Development of an Information System for Knowledge and Innovation Discovery and Diffusion in the Agro-Rural Sector...

Paper presented at the ECKM 2010 – 11th European Conference on Knowledge Management, 2-3 September, 2010, Famalicão, Portugal. URL: http://www.academic-conferences.org/eckm/eckm2010/eckm10-home.htm; Enterprise Information Portals (EIP) are being increasingly referred in the literature as one interesting technological solution to support organizations in their knowledge management initiatives. This paper seeks to explore the hidden potential of enterprise information portals to support knowledge management initiatives through the usage of social network analysis on research results and co-authorship/co-work relationships that may suggest ways to more effectively utilize knowledge capital and other organizational resources. For that purpose in this paper we will present field research results on evaluating knowledge management and human capital assets based on EIP data repositories using social network analysis. This evaluation will be made through the use of social network analysis techniques applied to authorship data from papers published in international journals with refereeing covering the last twenty years of research activities from a Portuguese leading research institution in the field of telecommunications - Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT).

Project work presented as a partial requirement to obtain a Master Degree in Information Management; Nowadays research institutions develop a significant amount of their activities financed by research grants and scholarships that sustain a constant human capital flow of temporary research labor. In this work and through the usage of Social Network Analysis we will study the impact of such policies in a Portuguese research institution. This evaluation will be applied to authorship data from papers published in international journals with refereeing covering the last twenty years of research activities involving permanent and temporary researchers from a Portuguese leading research institution in the field of telecommunications -‐ Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT). This study compares the co-‐authorship network and will reflect two main scenarios: a global perspective about this researchers network in terms of cohesion, and a detailed perspective about how the different subgroups are been interacting over time. Social Network Analysis will help us to understand how we can characterize their network behavior grouped by different scenarios as location...

The present article is based on the report for the Doctoral Conference of the PhD programme in Technology Assessment, held at FCT-UNL Campus, Monte de Caparica, July 9th, 2012. The PhD thesis has the supervision of Prof. Cristina Sousa (ISCTE-IUL), and co-supervision of Prof. José Cardoso e Cunha (FCT-UNL).; In this work we propose the use of Social Network Analysis to understand the positioning of the concept of Open Innovation in the literature, offering thereby a complementary approach to existing literature review up to now. The main motivation of this network analysis is to contribute to the understanding of the concept of Open Innovation, with its spread to different areas of knowledge over the years and its relationship with other concepts in the literature. Some 403 articles published in the database of the Science Direct during the years 2003 to 2011 were analyzed. The data was collected separately by year, considering the following information: journals in which the articles were published; countries of origin of the articles’ authors, keywords of these articles and year of publication. The results reveal the intense growth of the use of the words "Open Innovation" in articles from different areas of knowledge, as well as its increasing interconnection with other concepts...

peer-reviewed; The discipline of service science encourages the need to develop alternative and more scientific approaches to conceptualise modern service network environments. This chapter identifies the opportunity to apply organisational network analysis (ONA) as a novel approach to model agile service interaction. ONA also supports the visualisation of a service infrastructure which sustains agile practice. The objective of this chapter is to demonstrate how the concept of agile service network (ASN) may be examined through an unconventional method to model service operations. ONA demonstrates the exchange of resources and competencies through an ASN infrastructure. Ultimately, this chapter provides a platform to develop an audit framework with associated metrics borrowed from ONA. ONA concepts offer a new analytical approach towards ASN (for example, structural, composition, behavioural, and functional). This has a significant theoretical contribution for software engineering performance.

How do local homeland security organizations respond to catastrophic events such as hurricanes and acts of terrorism? Among the most important aspects of this response are these organizations ability to adapt to the uncertain nature of these “focusing events” (Birkland 1997). They are often behind the curve, seeing response as a linear process, when in fact it is a complex, multifaceted process that requires understanding the interactions between the fiscal pressures facing local governments, the institutional pressures of working within a new regulatory framework and the political pressures of bringing together different levels of government with different perspectives and agendas. This dissertation has focused on tracing the factors affecting the individuals and institutions planning, preparing, responding and recovering from natural and man-made disasters. Using social network analysis, my study analyzes the interactions between the individuals and institutions that respond to these “focusing events.” In practice, it is the combination of budgetary, institutional, and political pressures or constraints interacting with each other which resembles a Complex Adaptive System (CAS). To investigate this system, my study evaluates the evolution of two separate sets of organizations composed of first responders (Fire Chiefs...

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.; This thesis combines social network analysis (SNA) with historical case studies and political science research to examine elite Chinese politics in the Chinese Communist Partys Politburo. Specifically, I develop models of the group dynamics based on academic theories using SNA methodologies. These academic theories are founded on analysis of the role of group dynamics within the Politburopolitical factionalism, individual ideology, and institutionalismand they assess how these dynamics are useful in explaining Politburo behavior. After developing models of the theories, I created an SNA observation of the current Politburo and then compared that network with these models in order to test which theory provides the best explanation or closest fit. My analysis suggests that a combination of institutionalism and personal ideology, as exemplified by the core leader dynamic, best explains current Politburo behavior.; Major, United States Marine Corps

Mestrado em Engenharia Informática; Over the last few years, online social networks have become part of society, affecting the way people interact, and share and spread ideas. Their large and still increasing popularity led to the emergence of multiple huge social datasets. Although a vast set of social network analysis methods and algorithms have already been proposed and scrutinized by the research community, most of them aren’t prepared for a direct application over the rich and heterogeneous information contained in the online social network datasets. With the emergence of the Semantic Web, the up until now closed datasets are evolving to become one semantically enriched and distributed social dataset shared by all online social network applications. In such an environment, new methods and tools that fill the gap between the new social and semantic web technologies, and well established and accepted social network analysis methods are required. In that sense, the main goal of this thesis work, as part of the Toursplan project, is to adapt the current Toursplan platform so it fits into the Social and Semantic Web environments, while also providing mechanisms to perform social network analysis over the Toursplan semantically enriched social dataset.; Nos últimos anos as redes sociais online têm sido progressivamente adoptadas pela sociedade...

Dissertação para obtenção do Grau de Doutor em Ciências da Educação Especialidade em Tecnologias, Redes e Multimédia na Educação e Formação; This research presents a case study on the interactions between the participants of the forums of four online undergraduate courses from the perspective of social network analysis (SNA). Due to lack of studies on social networks in online learning environments in higher education in Portugal we have choose a qualitative structural analysis to address this phenomenon. The context of this work was given by the new experiences in distance education (DE) that many institutions have been making. Those experiences are a function of the changes in educational paradigms and due to a wider adoption of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) from schools as well as to the competitive market. Among the technologies adopted by universities are the Learning Management Systems (LMSs) that allow recording, storing and using large amounts of relational data about their users and that can be accessed through Webtracking. We have used this information to construct matrices that allowed the SNA. In order to deepen knowledge about the four online courses we were studying we have also collect data with questionnaires and interviews and we did a content analysis to the participations in the forums. The three main sources of data collection led us to three types of analysis: SNA...

peer-reviewed; The literature indicates that there is urgent need to address the significant gap in our ability to value the contributory interaction of service networks in organisational performance. This paper is primarily concerned with exploring how service (re)configuration is utilised to optimise network performance. The paper will summarise the literature review over the past year in the quest to document how we can understand the contributory value of service innovation networks. It identifies some interesting overlaps in business process management, service science, and network innovation literature. This paper will discuss how failing to account for the value of service networks inhibits our capability to discover and monitor service performance and how this complements the evolvement of service science. This prevents managers from transforming information on network activity and infrastructural capabilities into strategic knowledge. This paper demonstrates how social network analysis (SNA) can be a powerful tool for managers to understand organisational network performance and service interaction.

The aim of this article is to study the evolution of the Spanish research groups on Economy and Management. Due to subject headings lists are considered to be insufficient and inflexible to describe relationship between sciences, the authors develop a method to link journals from the SSCI depending on their subjects on this thematic area. The application of social network analysis to retrieval information in a multidisciplinary database has been demonstrate as very helpful to represent interdisciplinarity in a knowledge area, in particular the Social Science Citation Index. Secondly, a network is created based on co-authorship from the Spanish articles provided on this database and represented for three periods: 1992-1996, 1997-2001 and 2002-2006. The use bibliometric indicators as main attributes of nodes in the network analysis have been helpful to identify equivalent positions, actors who show the same role within each graph.; Peer reviewed

Net food-importing countries face unique challenges in food security. Traditional value chain analysis and food security assessments do not consider a country’s international trade network when calculating the food security levels of a country. This project focuses on wheat trade in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Wheat is highly consumed in the region, which is overall a net importer of the commodity. In addition, wheat has a cultural importance in the region—riots and civil unrest have often been tied to the rise in bread prices, and the existence of various subsidies of wheat and wheat products demonstrate the importance of making this commodity available to the population. However, the region as a whole is a net-importer of this commodity. Because of this, traditional mechanisms of food security assessments, which generally focus on domestic production, do not give a full picture of a country’s food security risks. Instead, assessments of the security of the wheat supply in most MENA countries should consider international trade indicators. Methodology This research uses social network analysis methodology, and analyzes the global trade network in terms of the following indicators: number of links...

Several social science disciplines, especially anthropology and sociology, have long engaged in social network analyses. Social Network Analysis (SNA) uses network theory to analyse social networks – a network that often involves individual social actors (people) and relations between them. Social network analysis aims at understanding the network structure by description, visualization, and statistical modeling. In this research, the illustration of the use of SNA is done on two different datasets: food web data and militarized interstate dispute data.

In general, the paper develops a historiographical debate about the methodology of social network analysis. More than responding questions using such methodology, this article tries to introduce the historian to the founder bibliography of social network analysis. Since the publication of the famous article by John Barnes in 1954, sociologists linked to sociometric studies have usually employed the social network analysis in their studies. On the other hand, this methodology is not widespread among Brazilian historians. Thus, the text undertakes a brief discussion among the main interpretative lines of social network analysis. The aim is to introduce the historian in the methodology of social network analysis and in the bibliography that formed the basis of discussions on the topic. Thus, the text begins with an introduction about the social network analysis, undertakes a more precise discussion on the topic and, in the end, outlines some of the main criticisms suffered by the methodology in question.; En general, el artículo desarrolla un debate historiográfico sobre la metodología de análisis de redes sociales.
