Paralelamente...

The rural development policy community is calling for new transdisciplinary approaches to convey meaningful measures (e.g. indicator sets, indices) for assessing High Nature Value farming systems at different spatial scales (IEEP, 2009). At broader spatial scales there has been huge efforts for example by IRENA (Indicator Reporting on the Integration of Environmental Concerns into Agriculture Policy) in developing a set of agri-environmental indicators at the European scale (Paracchini et al., 2010). Another European scale initiative was the High Nature Value farming project which worked on developing High Nature Value Farming area indicators. In parallel, there is a rich literature reporting local case study data on high nature value farming systems throughout Europe. Nevertheless, transforming the local case study data on a local level indicator set is yet far from being accomplished. Furthermore, is still missing cross scale work on integrating European and local scale high nature value farming indicators. Land cover patterns, being dynamic landscape components, are essential features in High nature value systems. Thus, one promising avenue for devising indicators that bridge the agri-environmental and social spheres at different scales of analysis is that of land cover (vegetation structures such as grass...

In this study, I trace the development and influence of a network of concepts, practices and ideas about nature and health in the Soviet Union from 1917 to 1991 that I call "turning to nature for health." Turning to nature for health sought to reform and re-frame the processes of urbanization and industrialization in Soviet culture. It provided a vocabulary that framed these processes in terms of their influence on health. "Nature" (priroda) was constructed as an antidote to the modern city. In nature, sanatorium visitors sought relief from various "maladies of civilization," understood to result from the poor material conditions, "Americanization," and alienation from nature of urban life. Nature was conceptualized as a source of spiritual renewal, aesthetic pleasure and rest as well as healing and medical therapy. At the center of the culture of turning to nature for health was a constructed division between the profane urban world and the idealized world of nature.; History

Permanent Preservation Areas (APP s), specially in Brazil s coastal region, have been constantly occupied and degraded by anthropic activities which thrive on the hegemonic model built and consolidated trough a social-historic process that constitute the current relationship between Nature and human society an exteriorization of Nature and its submission to mostly economic interests the anthropocentric view of Nature. In its essence, the juridical field, including environmental law, is a form of softened anthropocentrism that contributes to the annihilation of other kinds of relationships between humans animals and Nature, among them the ecocentric view defended by the environmental movement. This qualitative study focused on unraveling and understanding the vision of Nature s privilege in the juridical practice of the Court of Justice of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (TJ/RS) based on the analysis of decisions and general manifestations of agents of the Judiciary Power when solving conflicts between commercial occupations in APP s and the local Executive Power at Laranjal Beach, Municipality of Pelotas, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Akan relationship with nature as expressed by Jefferson and Skinner (1974) enjoins the living to view nature as sacred and in effect prevent it from wanton destruction. This is because humans have a relationship with nature and must in return treasure it. This relationship shaped people‟s perception and attitude towards nature through the adherence to taboos associated with nature as well as the recognition of the place of non-human members of the community. This was meant to consolidate the sacred relationship between humans and nature. However, with Ghana‟s adoption of „Western‟ perspectives of development which perceives humanity as superior and in charge of creation as well as its perception of Akan animistic tendencies as „primitive,‟ „superstitious‟ and „fetish‟ has led to the destruction of nature. Ghana‟s environment continually faces gradual degradation because of the neglect of the role of the Akan indigenous religion in the preservation of nature because of the perception that the adoption of the animistic tenets of Akan Indigenous religion in Ghana‟s environmental policy constitutes a retrogression. The continuous neglect of religion and the over-reliance on legislation as a means of preventing environmental degradation will worsen the environment situation. It is therefore appropriate that contemporary conservation methods take cognizance of Indigenous religion.

Certain restrictions on public funding for assisted reproductive technology (ART) are articulated and defended by recourse to a distinction between medical infertility and social infertility. We propose that underlying the prioritization of medical infertility is a vision of medicine whose proper role is to restore but not to improve upon nature. We go on to mark moral responses that speak of investments many continue to make in nature as properly an object of reverence and gratitude and therein (sometimes) a source of moral guidance. We draw on the work of Ludwig Wittgenstein in arguing for the plausibility of an appeal to nature in opposition to the charge that it must contain a logical fallacy. We also invite consideration of the moral plausibility of some appeal to nature. Finally, we examine what follows in the case of ART. Should medicine respect as natural limits that should not be overcome: the need for a man and a woman in reproduction; menopause; and even declining fertility with age? We must first ask ourselves to what degree we should defer to nature in the conduct of medicine, at least in the particular if not the general case. This will involve also asking ourselves what we think is natural and in what instances and spirit might we defy nature. Divergent opinions and policies concerning who should receive ART treatment and public funding are more easily understood in view of the centrality...

Thesis (PhD) - Indiana University, School of Education, 2007; The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of an explicit-reflective instruction involving the portrayal of non-controversial nature of science aspects on prospective elementary teachers' nature of science views and epistemological beliefs about science, and the factors mediating the development of nature of science views and epistemological beliefs about science in an introductory science course context. Using a mixed methods approach, this study examined the impact of the explicit-reflective instruction by doing pre- and post-instruction assessments of nature of science views and epistemological beliefs about science. This study also examined to what extent the factors such as prior nature of science views, metacognitive awareness, thinking dispositions, science self-efficacy beliefs, and motivation are related to post-instruction nature of science views and epistemological beliefs about science. The findings suggested that the explicit-reflective nature of science instruction was effective in improving nature of science views and epistemological beliefs about science. However, a holistic examination of post-instruction nature of science views indicated that post-instruction nature of science views reflected a "naïve relativistic" position. The findings also suggested that prior nature of science views and epistemological beliefs about science were related to post-instruction nature of science views and epistemological beliefs about science...

The book provides an evaluation of, and policy advice on key environmental, social, and economic issues concerning the development of nature tourism. Using KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa as a case study, it highlights both the benefits, and trade-offs I promoting, an managing sustainable nature-tourism development, and it assesses how policy can enhance nature tourism's contribution to economic growth, poverty reduction, and conservation. The book's contributors explore three key issues. First, they consider the importance of moving beyond development of a wildlife industry, to the creation of a true nature tourism economy, that supports biodiversity conservation. Second, they explore the role of the private sector in contributing to equitable development, and job creation, while generating conservation finance. Third, they consider alternative pricing, and other market mechanisms that can help make nature tourism more viable, and growth-oriented. Ultimately, the authors argue, economic development, equity, and conservation objectives can be balanced.

Living in harmony with nature is a pervasive ideology, or cultural blueprint, of how a "sustainable future,” a "good society,” and a "fulfilled life" would look like. However, this notion of harmony with nature is highly paradoxical, as consumers often want and even must dominate and control nature. The current thesis explores consumers’ desires of living in harmony with nature through a post-human analysis of how backcountry hikers negotiate tensions between utilitarian and romantic discourses of nature vis-à-vis their experience of material forces of nature. Through conceptualizing nature as an active actor in a symmetric assemblage of material and cultural entities (i.e., nature agency), this thesis contributes to our understanding of the human/nature relationship, materialism, and sustainable consumption. Findings are presenting through three interrelated themes. The first theme highlights how hikers appropriate romantic discourses by seeking harmony in a nature that is perceived as external to civilization. Noting the contradiction that hikers’ quest for being in harmony with a “romantic nature” oftentimes exposes them to higher physical dangers in material nature, the subsequent themes explore how harmony can arise when hikers have to struggle with physical dangers of nature. Focusing on physical dangers that are experienced in material nature...

This thesis seeks to unpack the notions of Michael Foucault's late work on governmentality and what insights it might have for understanding the ‘governing of nature’. In doing this it also operates as a critique of what is often termed 'resourcism', a way of evaluating nature which only accounts for its utility for human use and does not give any acceptance to the idea of protecting nature for its own sake, or any conception of a nature that cannot be managed. By utilizing a study of the govern-mentalities emerging throughout liberalism, welfare-liberalism and neoliberalism I argue that this form of 'knowing' nature-as-resource has always been internal to rationalities of liberal government, but that the bracketing out of other moral valuations to the logic of the market is a specific function of neoliberal rationalities of governing. I then seek to offer an analysis of the implications for this form of nature rationality, in that it is becoming increasingly globalized, and with that bringing more aspects of nature into metrics for government, bringing new justifications for intervening in ‘deficient’ populations under the rubric of ‘sustainable development. I argue, that with this a new (global) environmental subject is being constructed; one that can rationally assess nature-as-resource in a cost-benefit logic of wise-use conservation. This acts to both marginalize those people that have alternative understandings for our relationship with nature is destructive to nature itself...

La conclusión evalúa las preocupaciones actuales y las resonancias políticas de una filosofía de la naturaleza.; Considering Merleau-Ponty’s treatment of Whitehead’s Concept of Nature, the paper regards the affinity between these two authors, in their characterisation of the deficiencies of classical ontology and in their invention of concepts for a new approach to nature and ontology. Merleau-Ponty sees the task of philosophy of nature as the articulation of the two dimensions of Cartesianism...

More attention has been paid to environmental matters in recent years, mainly due to the current scenario of accentuated environmental degradation. The economic valuation of nature goods can contribute to the decision-making process in environment management, generating a more comprehensive informational base. This paper aims to present, in a historic perspective, the different concepts attributed to nature goods and were related to the current predominant perspectives of nature analyses. For this purpose, this paper presents the different concepts attributed to value since the pre-classical period, when nature were viewed as inert and passive providers of goods and services, this view legitimized nature's exploration without concern over the preservation and conservation of nature. The capacity of nature to absorb the impact of human action appears to be reaching its limit, considering the irreversibility, the irreproducibility and the possibility of collapse. The appropriate method for valuing natural resources is not known, but more important than the method is to respect and incorporate the particular characteristics of the nature goods into this process. These characteristics must be valuated in order to arrive at a more consistence approach to nature value and promote sustainability.

For years, people have used art to transform images of nature into symbols of life, benevolence, reverence, creation, and death. In my life, nature means freedom. It has offered me meditation and power, and enriched my life. Perfect freedom is my ultimate goal. I have tried to express this in my art forms. Early in my life, I was not skilled at observation. I was not fully aware of many of the intricate details that can be found in the beauty of nature, although I was always surrounded by it. When I lived in Rochester, New York, the landscape had a great influence on my work. The environment opened my eyes to the details of nature. I had observed more closely the wind, birds, insects, lakes, streams, and leaves. I felt relaxed and refreshed during these visits to natural settings. My thesis reveals the ways in which I developed my understanding for nature. I am primarily interested in two characteristics of nature: the physical structure of natural forms and the intangible characteristics of air, wind, sound, smell and so on. The first thing I focused on was the physical characteristics of structure in natural form. These characteristics change every season and have everlasting beauty. Each form in nature has its own unique color, shape and texture. The "invisible" characteristics of air...

"Human beings were born from nature and in death they return back to nature." This quote express how closely we are connected to nature which is defined a word as all the plants, animals and things that exist in the universe that are not made by people. We first came from nature, and in this complicated society, we sometimes feel like returning to the peaceful, magnificent and tranquil side of nature. Through my work, I would like to show his interpretation of how nature is. For example, a person can look at the ocean and feel peaceful, but someone else can look at the same ocean and feel depressed. Therefore, in my pieces I would like to show how I see different parts of nature. Another goal of in all of my work is to evoke the landscape of nature, as in painting, and force viewers to feel how nature breathes. To instill the breath of nature into lifeless object is what I strive to achieve in my work and in my life. The works are divided into two different parts that could be described by words like mountain, ocean. Most of my works, entitled Nature Through Sculpture, are composed of copper sheets and are simplified shapes of early Korean mountains in paintings, through modern Korean mountains in paintings. My works challenge viewers to discover an entirely new perspective of traditional sculptures realistically through contemporary sculptures almost as if they were futuristic. Sculptors and their work reflect and create the culture in their own way in modern art. Therefore...

My work strives to illustrate the bond between Mother Nature and human beings. Primarily, I seek the harmony created by balanced compositions of natural and man-made objects. Any accidental visual conflict arising from this pairing is also a subject matter I find myself exploring within the execution my pieces. In our high-speed daily lives, we often find ourselves unsettlingly disconnected from nature. Stephen Harrod Buhner describes this feeling as "a loss of connection to plants, to the land, to Earth, [that] leaves the holes with which we are naturally born unfilled," and proposes that "the solution is reconnection to the natural world and the living intelligence of the land" (231). According to him, humans all possess vacancies that are only filled by the living things that have evolved on the earth with us for a million years. I seek to create an answer to this dilemma with my art, creating work that draws from the refreshing vitality of nature. Reflecting the principles in Taoism, a philosophy of harmonious human life with nature, Mother Nature proves to be an abundant inspirational resource for the creation of art. Certainly, humans' appreciation of nature and its sublimity has been expressed in many different forms of art throughout the ages. It is not my goal...

The article explores some Brazilian typical society-environmental interaction patterns and the symbolicalconcepts of Nature related to it. The study was oriented in three directions – cultural, historical andeconomical. In a cultural point of view, it considers the relationship between the social-cultural systemand attitudes concerning nature. Using a historical approach, it considers the connection between theconcepts of Nature and the national state construction process, as well as the notions of national identityand memory. Finally it analyzes resource appropriation patterns related to the economical occupation ofthe Brazilian territory. The conclusions lead to evidence that some relation patterns and attitudes haveprevailed for a long period of time. They show that one can see that in the Brazilian society-nature relationshipthere is a counter point between two ways of regarding Nature – an enchanted and a modernway, which can mean new possibilities of understaning environment and for political formulation in that area.; O artigo explora os padrões de interação com o meio ambiente que se verificam na sociedade brasileira, bem como as concepções simbólicas de natureza a eles vinculadas.
