Two-photon polymerization is a powerful tool for fabricating three-dimensional micro/nano structures for applications ranging from nanophotonics to biology. To tailor such structure for specific purposes it is often important to dope them. In this paper we report on the fabrication of structures, with nanometric surface features (resolution of approximately 700 nm), using two-photon polymerization of an acrylic resin doped with the biocompatible polymer chitosan using a guest-host scheme. The fluorescence background in the Raman spectrum indicates the presence of chitosan throughout the structure. Mechanical characterization reveals that chitosan does not affect the mechanical properties of the host acrylic resin and, consequently, the structures exhibit excellent integrity. The properties of Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films from a block copolymer with polyethylene oxide and phenylene-vinylene moieties are reported. The LB films were successfully transferred onto several types of substrates, with sufficient quality to allow for evaporation of a metallic electrode on top of the LB films to produce polymer light emitting diodes (PLEDs). The photoluminescence and electroluminescence spectra of the LB film and device were similar, featuring an emission at ca. 475 nm, from which we could infer that the emission mechanisms are essentially the same as in poly(p-phenylene) derivatives. Analogously to other PLEDs the current versus voltage characteristics of the LB-based device could be explained with the Arkhipov model according to which charge transport occurs among localized sites. The implications for nanotechnology of the level of control that may be achieved with LB devices will also be discussed.

Despite the efficacy of topical retinoic acid, skin reactions have limited its acceptance by patients. Other retinoids, like Retinyl Palmitate (RP), are considerably less irritating, but they are also less effective. In order to enhance the performance of retinoids, in this work RP has been added to cosmetic formulations such as nanoemulsions, which can provide better penetration of this active substance. Because the vehicle can directly influence the skin penetration and the effectiveness of RP, two skin care products containing 5000 UI RP have been developed and investigated, namely a nanoemulsifying system and a classic gel cream. In vitro penetration tests were conducted by using Franz diffusion cells and placing porcine ear skin and iso-propanol in the receptor compartment. The RP concentration in the skin layers was analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography, and a Zeta-Sizer system was employed for measurement of the the particle size distribution. The penetration tests revealed a large difference between the vehicles in terms of the RP concentrations in each skin layer. The classic gel cream furnished better RP penetration in both the stratum corneum and the epidermis without stratum corneum + dermis, as compared to the self-nanoemulsifying system. Radiation dose assessment is essential for several medical treatments and diagnostic procedures. In this context, nanotechnology has been used in the development of improved radiation sensors, with higher sensitivity as well as smaller sizes and energy dependence. This paper deals with the synthesis and characterization of gold/alanine nanocomposites with varying mass percentage of gold, for application as radiation sensors. Alanine is an excellent stabilizing agent for gold nanoparticles because the size of the nanoparticles does not augment with increasing mass percentage of gold, as evidenced by UV-vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. X-ray diffraction patterns suggest that the alanine crystalline orientation undergoes alterations upon the addition of gold nanoparticles. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicates that there is interaction between the gold nanoparticles and the amine group of the alanine molecules, which may be the reason for the enhanced stability of the nanocomposite. The application of the nanocomposites as radiation detectors was evaluated by the electron spin resonance technique. In our days, the effects which are studied in the fields of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (N&N) have influence on the daily lives of human beings. However, school systems still have difficulties addressing these subjects, especially at the level of basic education. In this article, a teaching methodology of N & N is discussed; it is based on the application of a short course to high school students, along with a variation of the method of Cooperative Learning Jigsaw, in which we use a scientific text as a focus for the activity. It was found that the combination of these activities enabled students to understand and correlate the different concepts related to N&N, as well as form and expand their conceptual bases in a cooperative way.; Atualmente os efeitos estudados pelos campos da Nanociência e da Nanotecnologia (N&N) influenciam o cotidiano do ser humano. A difusão irrestrita das relações mercantis para todas as esferas da sociedade e a inclusão forçada dos bens naturais e sociais na categoria das mercadorias, são fenômenos que vêm impondo novos condicionamentos à produção da ciência e ao trabalho científico. Vê-se no contexto do capitalismo atual duas tendências em aceleração: a transformação do cientista num proletário assalariado a serviço do capital; e a transformação da própria ciência numa mercadoria fictícia através da qual a produção dum saber útil (valor-de-uso) é apenas o subterfúgio necessário à valorização do capital pela patente (valor-de-troca). Several studies have described the benefits of nanoscience and nanotechnology (N&N) in different sectors such as agriculture, energy, environmental preservation, and public health. The rapid evolution of N&N can be shown through a panoramic analysis of scientific papers and patents. In the area of public health, it is estimated that the global market for nanotechnology products will expand to 160 billion U.S. dollars in 2015. The Brazilian government has also strengthened its innovative potential in N&N through economic subsidies, as observed for other countries. This review is focused on the current landscape of N&N in a therapeutic context, highlighting the development of nanotech-products produced with biocompatible and biodegradable materials that are already commercially available or under investigation. Most studies under investigation are focused on the development of nanotechnology-based formulations intended for treatment of cancer, inflammatory, cardiovascular, and neurological diseases. Although there are several advantages of N&N in healthcare, many challenges have to be conquered to increase the availability of nanotechnology products in toxicological, preclinical and clinical studies, scale-up, regulatory, and private investments.

O léxico é, sem sombra de dúvida, elemento essencial para o tratamento automático de dados lingüísticos, sendo a sua análise semântica fator crucial para um efetivo processamento computacional que, não raro, encontra barreiras em questões ligadas a uma representação semântica eficaz e que permita ser representada em linguagem de máquina. Na Terminologia, esse tratamento semântico favorece o estabelecimento de relações existentes entre unidades lexicais especializadas, e determina a elaboração de definições terminológicas coerentes e representativas ao campo de especialidade ao qual pertencem. Nesse sentido, propomos neste trabalho traçar uma estrutura conceitual do domínio da Nanociência e Nanotecnologia, em língua portuguesa do Brasil, visando a criação do que modernamente se conhece por ontologias, cujos preceitos nortearam o desenvolvimento desta pesquisa. Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (N&N) are new approaches to research phenomena at atomic, molecular and macromolecular scales, where properties differ significantly from those at a larger scale. This new approach can be applied to microbial biofilms, which are formed when bacterial and/or yeast cells adhere to abiotic and biotic surfaces. It is well known that microorganisms in biofilms have a different behaviour from their planktonic counterparts, demonstrating a general recalcitrance to medical therapy. Therefore, biofilm-associated infections on indwelling medical devices, such as catheters and prostheses, may persist even after suspension of antibiotic therapy and hence may require the removal of the device. In order to reduce patient`s morbidity and mortality, as well as high economical costs associated to medical biofilms, several attempts have been made to develop novel mechanisms of biofilm prevention and/or elimination. In this mini-review, the current knowledge on the features of biofilm formation and their relevance to medical device-associated infections are enclosed, as well as the new anti-biofilm approaches based on nanotechnology.

Nanoscience and nanotechnology are new frontiers of this century. Their application to the agriculture and food sectors is relatively recent compared with their use in drug delivery and pharmaceuticals. Smart delivery of nutrients, bioseparation of proteins, rapid sampling of biological and chemical contaminants, and nanoencapsulation of nutraceuticals are some of the emerging topics of nanotechnology for food and agriculture. In this review, some applications of nanotechnology in agro-food sector are discussed.

An evaluation of impacts in “Nanoscience & nanotechnology”: steps towards standards for citation analysis

One is inclined to conceptualize impact in terms of citations per publication, and thus as an average. However, citation distributions are skewed, and the average has the disadvantage that the number of publications is used in the denominator. Using hundred percentiles, one can integrate the normalized citation curve and develop an indicator that can be compared across document sets because percentile ranks are defined at the article level. I apply this indicator to the set of 58 journals in the WoS Subject Category of “Nanoscience & nanotechnology,” and rank journals, countries, cities, and institutes using non-parametric statistics. The significance levels of results can thus be indicated. The results are first compared with the ISI-impact factors, but this Integrated Impact Indicator (I3) can be used with any set downloaded from the (Social) Science Citation Index. The software is made publicly available at the Internet. Visualization techniques are also specified for evaluation by positioning institutes on Google Map overlays.

Chemical and Physical Graphene Modifications

This dissertation is inspired by recent progress in the chemistry, physics, and nanotechnology of graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms. Studying and controllably modifying the electrical properties of graphene while minimizing damage to the lattice continues to be a challenge to the scientific community. Chapter 1 focuses on the covalent attachment of molecules with different functional groups to graphene and how functionalization modifies the electrical transport properties of graphene field effect transistors (FET) devices. Functionalization is shown to predominantly induce p-­type doping, undiminished mobility, and increased conductivity at the neutrality point. Physisorbed molecules desorb easily and do not have a significant effect. Statistical analysis enables us to extract trends even though identically fabricated graphene devices can exhibit a wide range of electrical behaviors, emphasizing that conclusions should not be drawn based on singular extremes. In Chapter 2 we present the fabrication and characterization of graphene antidot lattices produced by placing graphene on pre-patterned substrates. While the graphene remains intact atop a periodic well pattern we observe a surface potential differential inside vs. outside the wells. Chapter 3 investigates graphene FETs with multiple neutrality points. We used Raman mapping to determine if multiple local gating fields can be spatially resolved. The journal set which provides a representation of nanoscience and nanotechnology at the interfaces among applied physics, chemistry, and the life sciences is developing rapidly because of the introduction of new journals. The relevant contributions of nations can be expected to change according to the representations of the relevant interfaces among journal sets. In the 2005 set the position of the USA decreased more than in the 2004-set, while the EU-27 gained in terms of its percentage of world share of citations. The tag "Y01N" which was newly added to the EU classification system for patents, allows for the visualization of national profiles of nanotechnology in terms of relevant patents and patent classes.

Nanotechnology has emerged as a broad, exciting, yet ill-defined field of scientific research and technological innovation. There are important questions about the technology's potential economic, social, and environmental implications. We discuss an undergraduate course on nanoscience and nanotechnology for students from a wide range of disciplines, including the natural and social sciences, the humanities, and engineering. The course explores these questions and the broader place of technology in contemporary societies. The course is built around active learning methods and seeks to develop the students' critical thinking skills, written and verbal communication abilities, and general knowledge of nanoscience and nanoengineering concepts. Este artigo apresenEste artigo apresenta o que já foi possível delinear em relação à variação terminológica identificada no projeto de pesquisa Dicionário terminológico da nanociência e da nanotecnologia, institucionalizado desde 2005. O fenômeno da variação terminológica começou a receber adevida atenção desde quando houve as reavaliações da Teoria Geral da Terminologia (TGT), em que a Unidade de Conhecimento Especializado (UCE) passou a ser considerada uma realização da língua natural e, como tal, possuidora de todas as suas peculiaridades. Surgiram, então, visões teóricas influenciadas por questões variacionistas, comunicativas e cognitivas, dentre as quais se destacam a Teoria Comunicativa da Terminologia (TCT) e aSocioterminologia. Neste artigo, descrevem-se e analisam-se os aspectos morfológicos do conjunto de termos mais frequentes da terminologia da Nanociência e Nanotecnologia, de forma a cooperar com a fixação e maior compreensão da terminologia da Nanociência e Nanotecnologia, áreas centrais das atividades de pesquisa, desenvolvimento e inovação no mundo todo, como também enriquecer a descrição morfológica do português a partir de um léxico especializado, de maneira a contribuir com o refinamento de conhecimento linguístico útil para aplicação em sistemas híbridos de extração automática de terminologias (aqueles que combinam métodos estatísticos e conhecimento linguístico) considerados mais eficazes.; In this paper we describe and analyze the morphological aspects of the set of most frequent terms of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology terminology in order to contribute with the establishment and better understanding of the terminology of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, which are central areas of research, development and innovation activities worldwide, as well as enriching the morphological description of Brazilian Portuguese through the creation of a specialized lexicon, thus contributing with the development of linguistic knowledge that is useful for application in hybrid automatic terminology extraction systems (those that combine methods statistical and based on linguistic knowledge) considered more effective.

This paper examines engineering bioinformatics as a meaningful paradigm to complement modern nanotechnology. We consider bioinformatics as a coherent abstraction in devising, prototyping, design, optimization and analysis of complex nanosystems. Nano- and microscale biological systems exist in nature in enormous variety and sophistication. We are applying complex biological patterns in order to devise, analyze and examine distinct systems. One cannot blindly copy biosystems due to the fact that many complex phenomena and effects have not been comprehended, and system architectures and functionalities have not been fully examined. Typical examples include unsolved problems to comprehend the simplest Escherichia coli (E.coli) and Salmonella typhimurium bacteria that integrate three-dimensional biocircuitry, computing-processing-networking nanobioelectronics, nanobiomotors, nanabio-sensors, etc. Correspondingly, attention should be concentrated on devising novel paradigms in systematic synthesis through bioinformatics with the ultimate objective to fabricate these systems applying nanotechnology.
