Effects of musical cadence in the acute physiologic adaptations to head-out aquatic exercises

The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationships between musical cadence and the physiologic adaptations to basic head-out aquatic exercises. Fifteen young and clinically healthy women performed, immersed to the breast, a cardiovascular aquatic exercise called the ‘‘rocking horse.’’ The study design included an intermittent and progressive protocol starting at a 90 b min21 rhythm and increasing every 6 minutes, by 15 b min21, up to 195 b min21 or exhaustion. The rating of perceived effort (RPE) at the maximal heart rate achieved during each bout (HRmax), the percentage of the maximal theoretical heart rate estimated (%HRmax), and the blood lactate concentration ([La-]) were evaluated. The musical cadence was also calculated at 4 mmol L21 of blood lactate (R4), the RPE at R4 (RPE@R4), the HR at R4 (HR@R4), and the %HRmax at R4 (%HRmax@R4). Strong relationships were verified between the musical cadence and the RPE (R2 = 0.85; p , 0.01), the HRmax (R2 = 0.66; p , 0.01), the %HRmax (R2 = 0.61; p , 0.01), and the [La-] (R2 = 0.54; p , 0.01). The R4 was 148.13 6 17.53 b min21, the RPE@R4 was 14.53 6 2.53, the HR@R4 was 169.33 6 12.06 b min21, and the %HRmax@R4 was 85.53 6 5.72%. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationships between musical cadence and kinematical characteristics of a basic head-out aquatic exercise. Six young women with at least one year of experience conducting head-out aquatic classes were videotaped in the sagital plane with a pair of cameras providing a dual projection from both above and underwater performing 5 incremental bouts (120, 135, 150, 165 and 180 b.min-1) of the basic head-out aquatic exercise “rocking horse”. There was a decrease of the cycle period throughout the protocol. Relationships between horizontal or vertical displacements with music cadence were not significant. Increased cadence imposed increased segmental and centre of mass’ velocities. As a conclusion expert and fit subjects seem to increase segmental velocity with increasing musical cadence.

Background: Head-out aquatic exercises became one of the most popular physical activities within the health primarily and thirdly prevention system. Music is seen as one of the most important aspects when conducting head-out aquatic exercise sessions. Research question: Is there any relationship between musical cadence and the kinematic behaviour when performing aerobic head-out aquatic exercises? It was hypothesized that an increase in music cadence will would impose a decrease of the segment range of motion. Type of study: Experimental, prospective. Methods: Six young and clinically healthy women with at least one year of experience conducting head-out aquatic classes were videotaped in the frontal plane, with a pair of cameras providing a double projection (above and below the water surface). Subjects performed an incremental protocol of five bouts (120b.min-1, 135b.min-1, 150b.min-1, 165b.min-1 and 180b.min-1) with 16 full cycles of the “side kick” exercise. Data processing and calculation of segmental (i.e. hands and feet) and anatomical landmark (i.e. centre of mass) were performed using the software Ariel Performance Analysis System and applying the DLT algorithm. Results: There was a decrease in the cycle period during the incremental protocol. The relationships between the segmental lateral and vertical displacements with the musical cadence were not significant. The aim was to assess the interaction between kinematics and neuromuscular responses of subjects performing the rowing exercise with barbell in group fitness classes with different external loads and cadences. Fifteen male subjects performed nine sets of nine repetitions of the selected exercise. Sets were composed by a pair wise combination of different external loads (5, 10 and 20 [kg]) and cadences (1, 2 and 4 musical beats) in a randomized order. Kinematical data was collected with an electrogoniometer and it was assessed the: (i) absolute duration of each exercise repetition; (ii) minimum relative angle between the arm and forearm during the flexion action. Neuromuscular data was collected with superficial electromyography and it was computed the EMG amplitude (aEMG), the EMG room mean square (RMS) and the activation time of five muscles from the arm and trunk. Increasing cadence decreased the absolute duration of the exercise cycle. There was no significant interaction between the joint angle and the external load nor the cadence. Increases in the external load and in the cadence imposed a RMS increase as well. It was also verified a significant interaction among the aEMG and the external load in the four muscle groups.

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationships between “Sailor’s jigs” kinematics and increasing music cadence. Six young women, non-pregnant, with at least one year of experience conducting this type of head-out aquatic program, with no kind of skeletal muscle injury reported in the last six months were evaluated. The exercise was recorded on video, in the frontal plane, using a pair of cameras, enabling a double projection, from above and underwater body motions, at five increasing cadences (120 b.min-1, 135 b.min-1, 150 b.min-1, 165 b.min-1 and 180 b.min-1). Images were thereafter digitized in specific software (Ariel Performance Analysis Systems). The cycle period decreased through the incremental protocol. Cycle period decrease is done decreasing joint range of motion and increasing the limbs segmental velocity as well. Although these combined kinematical strategy, a deeper analysis reveals that subjects decrease the cycle period mainly decreasing the range of motion.

Introdução: Nos últimos anos a Hidroginástica tem sofrido um aumento significativo no número de praticantes, sendo hoje em dia uma das actividades físicas com maior espectro de idades entre os praticantes que procuram entre outros, uma melhoria da condição física. É no entanto não raramente conotada pela população mais jovem como sendo uma aula para populações idosas, que não podendo fazer parte de uma outra actividade física com uma maior intensidade, optam pela Hidroginástica. Para mudar esta mentalidade é necessário que o professor não só conheça as populações com quem trabalha mas também os níveis de intensidade que pode aplicar a cada uma delas, e como controlar esses níveis de modo a não correrem o risco de sistematicamente promoverem intensidades abaixo da capacidade de muitos praticantes. Para Rocha [90], esta é uma actividade que por ser realizada dentro de água, pode ser praticada por indivíduos de diversas faixas etárias, pois oferece uma reduzida carga mecânica sobre o aparelho locomotor, num ambiente supostamente descontraído e agradável do ponto de vista psicológico. Dissertação de Mestrado em Ciências do Desporto – Actividades de Academia; O objectivo deste estudo foi analisar as relações entre a cadência musical e as características cinemáticas de um exercício básico de Hidroginástica, quando imerso ao nível do apêndice xifóide. Seis mulheres jovens com pelo menos um ano de experiência na condução de classes de Hidroginástica foram filmadas no plano frontal, com um par de câmaras (uma subaquática e uma de superfície), fornecendo uma projecção dupla superior e inferior ao nível da água, realizando cinco patamares incrementais (120 b.min-1, 135 b.min-1, 150 b.min-1, 165 b.min-1 e 180 b.min-1) do exercício básico Pontapé Lateral. O processamento dos dados e o cálculo das variáveis foram executados usando o software Ariel Performance Analysis System (APAS) e aplicação do algoritmo DLT. Os dados obtidos permitem-nos concluir que houve uma diminuição do período de ciclo ao longo do protocolo incremental. The present study aimed to investigate whether the psychodramatic theory can broaden the understanding of the client’s expression through the musical composition experience during the music therapeutic process regarding the phase of music therapeutic analysis. A qualitative research was proposed involving two case studies which allowed a better practical understanding of the investigated theme. Data collection was performed in three phases: recruitment of research participants, initial interview, and music-therapeutic process. Two individual music therapeutic processes were carried out, in which the participants had 11 and 16 sessions with the researcher. During the sessions, the following musical experiences in music therapy were used: improvisation, receptive, re-creative, and composition, as well as psychodrama techniques adapted to music therapy. The results demonstrated that the initial goals were achieved and it was also possible to broaden not only the understanding of the music therapeutic analysis phase in the interfaces with psychodrama, but of the whole process as well. Moreover, some recommendations were established regarding the use of the musical composition experience, as well as its variations, among which the following can be mentioned: the need that the music therapist be attentive to the musical complexity of the experience to be used; the importance of the fact that the client has already tried the other musical experiences before performing the musical composition; the relevance of the music therapeutic analysis observing the proximity and repetition of the notes...

“A Shine of Truth in the ‘universal delusional context of reification’ (Theodor W. Adorno)” comprend sept chapitres, un prologue et un épilogue. Chaque partie se construit à deux niveaux : (1) à partir des liens qui se tissent entre les phrases contiguës ; et (2) à partir des liens qui se tissent entre les phrases non contiguës. Les incipit des paragraphes forment l’argument principal de la thèse. Le sujet de la thèse, Schein (apparence, illusion, clarté) est abordé de manière non formaliste, c’est à dire, de manière que la forme donne d’elle-même une idée de la chose : illusion comme contradiction imposée. Bien que le sujet de la thèse soit l’illusion, son but est la vérité. Le Chapitre I présente une dialectique de perspectives (celles de Marx, de Lukács, de Hegel, de Horkheimer et d'Adorno) pour arriver à un critère de vérité, compte tenu du contexte d’aveuglement universel de la réification ; c’est la détermination de la dissolution de l’apparence. This study explored the viability and efficacy of integrating cadence-matched, salient music into a walking intervention for patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Twenty-two people with PD were randomised to a control (CTRL, n = 11) or experimental (MUSIC, n = 11) group. MUSIC subjects walked with an individualised music playlist three times a week for the intervention period. Playlists were designed to meet subject's musical preferences. In addition, the tempo of the music closely matched (±10–15 bpm) the subject's preferred cadence. CTRL subjects continued with their regular activities during the intervention. The effects of training accompanied by “walking songs” were evaluated using objective measures of gait score. The MUSIC group improved gait velocity, stride time, cadence, and motor symptom severity following the intervention. This is the first study to demonstrate that music listening can be safely implemented amongst PD patients during home exercise.
