In this paper, a comparative analysis of the long-term electric power forecasting methodologies used in some South American countries, is presented. The purpose of this study is to compare and observe if such methodologies have some similarities, and also examine the behavior of the results when they are applied to the Brazilian electric market. The abovementioned power forecasts were performed regarding the main four consumption classes (residential, industrial, commercial and rural) which are responsible for approximately 90% of the national consumption. The tool used in this analysis was the SAS (c) program. The outcome of this study allowed identifying various methodological similarities, mainly those related to the econometric variables used by these methods. This fact strongly conditioned the comparative results obtained.

This study reports a case study experience of a PBL (either as project-based learning or problem-based learning) methodology in simulated environments in vocational higher education. PBL was introduced to produce adaptable graduates whose professional competences are well attuned to the demands of a rapidly changing world. As main aspects of this development, we highlight the change from a teaching to a learning paradigm, the attention given to the social context of learning, the promotion of simulated environments of relevant real situations, the active responsibility of students for their own knowledge, and the global and interdisciplinary character of this knowledge. Given this outline, the empirical study assumes as its object the course of Projecto Profissional (Professional Project) in ISCA-UA (Higher Institute of Accounting and Administration of the University of Aveiro). It looks like that PBL-type methodologies in simulated environments add more value, essentially, at the beginning of the graduate’s professional career, but there were concerns about what it seems to be a gap between employers and other stakeholders regarding, especially, social, personal and learning competences. A key impediment to such engagement was the differences in perception of the type of competences truly valued by employers. We also found a difference in behavior between academics that do and do not have professional experience outside academia. Furthermore...

The rapid development of science and technology as well as politic, social and economical dynamics which characterize post-modern societies, demand from educational systems a high quality education accessible to all. The main challenge of the XXI century in the educational field is not only to assure that students acquire a wide range of skills which are permanently updated, but also to guarantee the quality of those learning experiences. Consequently, the quality level in education is one of the major concerns of those government leaders, politicians, academics and researchers. This has also been a highly discussed subject in scientific meetings and it has been studied in many educational research programs in the many different countries of the western world. Research results on education quality show a positive relation between student’s academic performance and teaching quality. However, it is necessary to venture further; research on quality indicators is needed in order to understand how students recognize quality in teaching. In order to achieve this, we have developed an exploratory study involving students from different higher education institutions in Portugal. The data was collected using a questionnaire survey and the sample consists of students in different courses from higher education institutions in Alentejo (Portugal). Changes in the labor market profile of the learner, speed of knowledge production and the realization of an inconsistency between vocational training and the provision of services to the community, led a revolution in higher education, particularly in the health area courses towards tailor the training for this new context. Curriculum guidelines systematized these needs and boosted curricular reforms and restructuring of the educational course projects. In relation to teachers and students, in the midst of so many changes, it is also required a new approach to teaching and learning. This study focused on investigating the perception of teachers and students on the methodologies, teaching strategies and pedagogical practices employed in a vocational training course in dentistry. For this we used a qualitative approach. Data were collected through individual interviews with teachers and students to focus groups, analysis of these data was performed using Grounded Theory and having as support the WebQDA software. The teaching methodology used in the course is more traditional and the strategy is lecturing with slide projection. Although students recognize the benefits of active methodologies, these believe that the traditional method is most suitable for your training. The active methodology of teaching and learning is still a challenge for teachers essentially the pedagogical limitations. Utilize these methodologies is to abandon the security that underpins the historical use of traditional methodology. This paradigm shift for teachers...

peer-reviewed; Systems development issues occupy a position of central imponance in the information systems field and, indeed.. much has been prescribed in the quest for successful systems development. However. given the well· documented Msoftwarc: crisis", success is far from guaranteed for many systems development projects. Many researchers see the solution to the software crisis in terms of increased control and the morc widespread adoption of rigorous and formalised system development methodologies (SDMs), and this paper first presents the arguments and pressures in favour offormaIised methodologies. However, the problems associated with the use of fonnalised methodologies have: not perhaps recieved as much actention in the literature. A number of arguments are presented in this paper which question the value of formalised methodologies. These dichotomous arguments-for and against fonnalised SDMs-bring about a dilemma for systems developers as to whether to adopt a formalised development methodology or not. The implications of this dilemma are discussed in this paper and a number of issues for further research are proposed.

Rapid technological advances in recent years have precipitated a general shift towards software distribution as a central computing paradigm. This has been accompanied by a corresponding increase in the dangers of security breaches, often causing security attributes to become an inhibiting factor for use and adoption. Despite the acknowledged importance of security, especially in the context of open and collaborative environments, there is a growing gap in the survey literature relating to systematic approaches (methodologies) for engineering secure distributed systems. In this paper, we attempt to fill the aforementioned gap by surveying and critically analyzing the state-of-the-art in security methodologies based on some form of abstract modeling (i.e. model-based methodologies) for, or applicable to, distributed systems. Our detailed reviews can be seen as a step towards increasing awareness and appreciation of a range of methodologies, allowing researchers and industry stakeholders to gain a comprehensive view of the field and make informed decisions. Following the comprehensive survey we propose a number of criteria reflecting the characteristics security methodologies should possess to be adopted in real-life industry scenarios...

Peer-reviewed; Systems development issues occupy a position of central importance in the information systems field and, indeed, much has been prescribed in the quest for successful systems development. However, given the well-documented "software crisis", success is far from guaranteed for systems development projects. Many researchers see the solution to the software crisis in terms of increased control and the more widespread adoption of rigorous and formalised system development methodologies. This paper first presents some arguments and pressures which support the use of methodologies. Some evidence of the literature bias which favours methodologies is also provided. However, the problems associated with the use of methodologies have not perhaps received as much attention in previous research. This paper identifies a number of arguments and pressures which question the value of methodologies, and reports the results of a field study which investigated the role of methodologies in practice. The critical perspective adopted in this paper shows that, contrary to the predominant literature view, the assumption that increased adoption of methodologies would help address the problems inherent in systems development is by no means proven.

Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited; The DoD requirements for software are growing almost as rapidly as the escalating cost of developing the software. The new rapid prototyping paradigm is an innovative approach to software development, which modifies the traditional life cycle model. This thesis features a comprehensive survey and evaluation of the rapid prototyping paradigm. The survey describes the rapid prototyping process, the complex prototyping support system environment required, proposed rapid prototyping methodologies, and published rapid prototyping models. The rapid prototyping methodologies and models are evaluated with respect to their conceptual design. The survey and evaluation of the methodologies and models reveal a progressive paradigm featuring some methodologies and models that can be implemented now and some that are capable of being implemented in the future. Because of DoD's influence on the software industry, we discuss how DoD should usher in the new paradigm, set strategic goals, and further decompose these goals into near-term, and long-term goals.; Captain, United States Army

Water covers over 70% of the Earth's surface, and is vital for all known forms of life. But only 3% of the Earth's water is fresh water, and less than 0.3% of all freshwater is in rivers, lakes, reservoirs and the atmosphere. However, rivers and lakes are an important part of fresh surface water, amounting to about 89%. In this Master Thesis dissertation, the focus is on three types of water bodies – rivers, lakes and reservoirs, and their water quality issues in Asian countries. The surface water quality in a region is largely determined both by the natural processes such as climate or geographic conditions, and the anthropogenic influences such as industrial and agricultural activities or land use conversion. The quality of the water can be affected by pollutants discharge from a specific point through a sewer pipe and also by extensive drainage from agriculture/urban areas and within basin. Hence, water pollutant sources can be divided into two categories: Point source pollution and Non-point source (NPS) pollution. Seasonal variations in precipitation and surface run-off have a strong effect on river discharge and the concentration of pollutants in water bodies. For example, in the rainy season, heavy and persistent rain wash off the ground...

At the risk of seeming to make exaggerated claims for visual methodologies, what I set out to do is lay bare some of the key elements of working with the visual as a set of methodologies and practices. In particular, I address educational research in South Africa at a time when questions of the social responsibility of the academic researcher (including postgraduate students as new researchers, as well as experienced researchers expanding their repertoire of being and doing) are critical. In so doing I seek to ensure that the term "visual methodologies" is not simply reduced to one practice or to one set of tools, and, at the same time, to ensure that this set of methodologies and practices is appreciated within its full complexity. I focus on the doing, and, in particular, on the various approaches to doing through drawings, photo-voice, photo-elicitation, researcher as photographer, working with family photos, cinematic texts, video production, material culture, advertising campaigns as nine key areas within visual methodologies.

This article examines how visual methodologies might be incorporated into educational policy studies. By bringing together theoretical perspectives on critical policy studies and visual methodologies, we aim to demonstrate the ways in which the visual can be an important tool to help us interrogate how knowledge is produced through the constructions and representations of policy texts and discourses. In so doing, we suggest that the use of visual methodologies can help us to rethink policy, particularly in relation to studying social difference in globalizing conditions. While we focus here on one set of documents, the annual Global Monitoring Reports associated with Education For All (EFA), our aim overall is to highlight both the methodological and policy implications that could be applied to a variety of official texts.
