This paper presents results on a verification test of a Direct Numerical Simulation code of mixed high-order of accuracy using the method of manufactured solutions (MMS). This test is based on the formulation of an analytical solution for the Navier-Stokes equations modified by the addition of a source term. The present numerical code was aimed at simulating the temporal evolution of instability waves in a plane Poiseuille flow. The governing equations were solved in a vorticity-velocity formulation for a two-dimensional incompressible flow. The code employed two different numerical schemes. One used mixed high-order compact and non-compact finite-differences from fourth-order to sixth-order of accuracy. The other scheme used spectral methods instead of finite-difference methods for the streamwise direction, which was periodic. In the present test, particular attention was paid to the boundary conditions of the physical problem of interest. Indeed, the verification procedure using MMS can be more demanding than the often used comparison with Linear Stability Theory. That is particularly because in the latter test no attention is paid to the nonlinear terms. For the present verification test, it was possible to manufacture an analytical solution that reproduced some aspects of an instability wave in a nonlinear stage. O aprofundamento das diferenças entre a contabilidade e as normas tributárias tornou o crescimento do ativo fiscal diferido, resultante da alocação dos efeitos tributários das diferenças temporárias entre os dois sistemas contábeis, um problema a ser enfrentado pelas autoridades monetárias. Entre os principais métodos de alocação de impostos entre períodos, a alocação parcial é o método que produz um ativo fiscal diferido mais condizente com os fundamentos econômicos. As autoridades monetárias têm procurado limitar o crescimento do ativo fiscal diferido nas instituições financeiras por meio de procedimentos extracontábeis, em grande parte porque a alocação utilizada em muitos países, inclusive no Brasil, é a alocação abrangente. Os normativos contábeis sobre o ativo fiscal diferido e as legislações bancárias correlatas dos EUA e do Brasil são analisados e comparados, além de apresentados os números agregados do ativo fiscal diferido no Sistema Financeiro Nacional. Estudos no campo de conforto personalizado demonstram a necessidade de se desenvolver um sistema de distribuição de ar que permita ao usuário controlar, individualmente, as condições térmicas no seu posto de trabalho. Neste contexto, um equipamento dessa natureza foi idealizado pela orientadora deste trabalho e nesse processo foi identificada a necessidade de se elaborar um método de desenvolvimento de produto com características acadêmicas para ser usado na concepção e construção do dispositivo em questão. Para atender a essa necessidade, um método de projeto foi proposto neste trabalho para ser aplicado na área de desenvolvimento tecnológico de produto e/ou novos produtos, tendo como estudo de caso o dispositivo de conforto personalizado que foi desenvolvido paralelamente por um escritório de design. Neste trabalho propomos modificações globalmente convergentes para o Método das Assíntotas Móveis (MMA), baseadas no parâmetro espectral para a construção das aproximações das funções originais e na relaxação da condição conservadora. A informação de segunda ordem presente no parâmetro espectral é incluída nas aproximações racionais da função objetivo e das restrições não-lineares no início de cada iteração, de modo a melhorar a qualidade dos modelos. A condição conservadora é relaxada por meio de uma seqüência forçante controlada somável, de maneira que a convergência global é mantida. Também, propomos uma nova estratégia para resolver os subproblemas MMA por meio do problema dual, usando uma técnica de região de confiança. An alternative strategy to solve the subproblems of the Method of Moving Asymptotes (MMA) is presented, based on a trust-region scheme applied to the dual of the MMA subproblem. At each iteration, the objective function of the dual problem is approximated by a regularized spectral model. A globally convergent modification to the MMA is also suggested, in which the conservative condition is relaxed by means of a summable controlled forcing sequence. Another modification to the MMA previously proposed by the authors [Optim. Methods Softw., 25 (2010), pp. 883-893] is recalled to be used in the numerical tests. This modification is based on the spectral parameter for updating the MMA models, so as to improve their quality. The performed numerical experiments confirm the efficiency of the indicated modifications, especially when jointly combined.

Hadron energy spectra induced by one-single nucleon are obtained solving diffusion equations by the method of characteristics. Our solutions are a generalization of earlier papers that allow us to calculate hadron fluxes including the energy dependence of the interaction lengths and inelasticities. A comparison with the integral hadron spectra of the so-called 'halo events" detected by the Brazil-Japan Collaboration at Mt. Chacaltaya is made, in order to test our solutions. A reasonable agreement between then is obtained, considering the rising with energy of the nucleon inelasticity coefficient.

Electromagnetic scattering by 3-D arbitrarily shaped homogeneous dielectric objects is characterized. In the analysis, the method of moments is first employed to solve the combined field integral equation for scattering properties of these three-dimensional homogeneous dielectric objects of arbitrary shape. The fast multipole method, and the multi-level fast multipole algorithm are implemented into our codes for matrix-vector manipulations. Specifically, four proposals are made and discussed to increase convergence and accuracy of iterative procedures (conjugate gradient method). This paper presents an accurate and efficient method-of-moments solution of the electrical-field integral equation (EFIE) for large, three-dimensional, arbitrarily shaped objects. In this method, the generalized conjugate residual method (GCR) is used to solve the matrix equation iteratively and the precorrected-FFT technique is then employed to accelerate the matrix-vector multiplication in iterations. The precorrected-FFT method eliminates the need to generate and store the usual square impedance matrix, thus leading to a great reduction in memory requirement and execution time. It is at best an O(N log N) algorithm and can be modified to fit a wide variety of systems with different Green’s functions without excessive effort. This thesis is concerned with the systematic investigation and application of knowledge within the architectural design studio. The thesis takes, as a point of departure in the development of architectural epistemology, a model of knowledge developed by Yehuda Elkana, in A Programmatic At tempt at an Anthropology of Knowledge, Science and Cultures. Sociology of the Sciences, Everett Mendelson and Yehuda Elkana (eds.) (D. Reidel Publishing Co., 1981). It is generally accepted that the design process can be characterized in a variety of ways with respect to the development and implementation of architectural knowledge. However, it is my contention that the design process, particularly [but not exclusively] within an academic setting, is best characterized as a form of critical inquiry about architecture, leading to the development of a form of architectural knowledge-contextually dependant and conventional in nature--which can be examined, tested and modified. In this thesis we develop some advances in the method of finite spheres which is a truly meshless numerical technique for the solution of boundary value problems on geometrically complex domains. We present the development of a preprocessor for the auto-generation of finite spheres on two-dimensional computational domains. The techniques enable to determine the radii of the spheres as well as to detect the boundary of the analysis domain. The numerical integration for the calculation of stiffness matrices is expensive. However, by utilizing the compact support characteristic it is possible to transform the integral equations into more efficient expressions. The improved equations reduce the effort of integration because for most terms, only line integrations are used. We also propose a new coupling scheme to couple finite element discretizations with finite spheres. The idea is that we can use finite elements and finite spheres simultaneously to utilize their mutual advantages. Hence, we can employ finite spheres only in areas where their use is efficient. In this thesis, we investigate theoretical and numerical advantages of a novel representation for Sum of Squares (SOS) decomposition of univariate and multivariate polynomials. This representation formulates a SOS problem by interpolating a polynomial at a finite set of sampling points. As compared to the conventional coefficient method of SOS, the formulation has a low rank property in its constraints. The low rank property is desirable as it improves computation speed for calculations of barrier gradient and Hessian assembling in many semidefinite programming (SDP) solvers. Currently, SDPT3 solver has a function to store low rank constraints to explore its numerical advantages. Some SOS examples are constructed and tested on SDPT3 to a great extent. The experimental results demonstrate that the computation time decreases significantly. The study of human mutagenesis requires methods of measuring somatic mutations in normal human tissues and inherited mutations in human populations. Such methods should permit measurement of rare mutations in the presence of abundant wild-type copies and should be general to the human genome. A sensitivity of 2 x 10-6 for point mutations was recently achieved in human cells using a novel method of target isolation, constant denaturant capillary electrophoresis (CDCE), and high-fidelity polymerase chain reaction (hifi-PCR) (Li-Sucholeiki and Thilly, 2000). This method is applicable to 100-base pair (bp) DNA domains juxtaposed with a naturally occurring domain of a higher melting temperature, or a natural clamp. Such sequence domains represent about 9% of the human genome. To permit analysis of rare point mutations in the human genome more generally, this thesis developed a procedure in which a clamp can be ligated to any 100-bp sequence of interest. This procedure was combined with the previous method to create a new method of point mutational analysis that is not dependent on a naturally occurring clamp. The primary purpose of this research was to improve the accuracy and robustness of pipeline transient modeling. An algorithm was developed to model the transient flow in closed tubes for thin walled pipelines. Emphasis was given to the application of this type of flow to pipelines with small radius 90° elbows. An additional loss term was developed to account for the presence of 90° elbows in a pipeline. The algorithm was integrated into an optimization routine to fit results from the improved model to experimental data. A web based interface was developed to facilitate the pre- and post- processing operations. Results showed that including a loss term that represents the effects of 90° elbows in the Method of Characteristics (MOC) [1] improves the accuracy of the predicted transients by an order of magnitude. Secondary objectives of pump optimization, blockage detection and removal were investigated with promising results.

In this paper, a meshless computational model by integrating the method of fundamental solutions (MFS) and the method of particular solutions fulfilled with compactly supported radial basis functions (CSRBF) is developed for three-dimensional (3D) linear elasticity with the presence of body forces. The corresponding displacement and stress particular solution kernels across the support radius are firstly derived using Galerkin vectors and then are used to modify the boundary conditions. Subsequently, the classical meshless MFS, in which the homogeneous part of the full solutions are approximated using the linear combination of displacement and stress fundamental solutions in 3D linear elasticity, is formulated for solving the homogeneous 3D linear elastic system. Finally, several examples are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the present meshless method and also the effect of sparseness of interpolation matrix in CSRBF interpolation is discussed.; This work is supported by the Australian Research Council (Grant no. Not believed to be a CIVINS (Civilian Institutions) title.; The method of characteristics for three dimensional axially symmetric bodies was used to determine the velocity distribution about the nose of the Corporal E rocket, a rocket projectile, for Mach numbers 2 and 4. From the velocities the pressure distribution was determined and a drag coefficient computed. For a starting point eh nose of the projectile was approximated for a short distance by a cone and the Taylor-Maccoll solution to this problem was used. This solution gave the angle of shockware and the body. The Sauer graphical-numerical iteration method was used for the remainder of the solution. Preliminary calculation and the work for Mach number3 were carried out by Dr. H. K. Forster to whom we are indebted for instruction and aid with this work.

Esta fase também é dividida em outras duas, sendo que uma delas versa sobre a construção de um referencial teórico para a interpretação do estudo sobre as políticas públicas; e a outra demonstra um aporte conceitual metodológico baseado na sociologia de Pierre Bourdieu. Na segunda fase, desenvolve-se uma análise da parte quantitativa que visa à interpretação dos dados coletados na parte empírica da pesquisa. This paper introduces an Anomaly-based Intrusion Detection architecture based on behavioral traffic profiles created by using our enhanced version of the Method of Remaining Elements (MRE). This enhanced version includes: a redefinition of the exposure threshold through the entropy and cardinality of residual sequences, a dual characterization for two types of traffic slots, the introduction of the Anomaly Level Exposure (ALE) that gives a better quantification of anomalies for a given traffic slot and r-feature, an alternative support that extends its detection capabilities, and a new procedure to obtain the exposure threshold through an analysis of outliers on the training dataset. Regarding the original MRE, we incorporate the refinements outlined resulting in a reliable method, which gives an improved sensitivity to the detection of a broader range of attacks. The experiments were conducted on the MIT-DARPA dataset and also on an academic LAN by implementing real attacks. The results show that the proposed architecture is effective in early detection of intrusions, as well as some kind of attacks designed to bypass detection measures.
