The present study provides updated information on amphipod assemblages of the southern Portuguese coast, the most south-western part of continental Europe. The influence of depth and sediment type on the spatial distribution of shallow soft-bottom amphipods was tested by means of univariate and multivariate methods. Samples were collected down to 40 m depth within areas ranging from very fine sand to gravel. The ratio between density and diversity was found to increase with depth and from coarser to finer sediments. Both physical variables tested were found to play a major role in structuring amphipod assemblages. However, some dominance of depth was evident as samples were mainly separated according to this variable. Moreover, while only 15 taxa were common to all depth levels, 35 were collected from all sediment types. Both depth and sediment type may override the potential effects of geographical location, as samples from different areas along the southern Portuguese coast were biologically related. A peculiar habitat was sampled in this study: a maerl bed, which was confirmed to be a hotspot of density. Presented here is the first report describing the detection of potentially diarrheal Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains isolated from cultured bivalves on the Mediterranean coast, providing data on the presence of both tdh- and trh-positive isolates. Potentially diarrheal V. parahaemolyticus strains were isolated from four species of bivalves collected from both bays of the Ebro delta, Spain.

Male and female of Odaginiceps korykosensis sp. n. (Copepoda, Harpacticoida, Tetragonicipitidae), collected in the intertidal zone of Kızkalesi beach along the Mediterranean coast of Turkey (Mersin Province), are described. The new species is the fifth member of the genus and can easily be distinguished from the other species by the presence of four setae/spines on the second endopodal segment of P4 and by the structure of the caudal rami. Previously, representatives of the genus Odaginiceps have been reported from Gulf of Mexico, off Bermuda and Kenya. Odaginiceps korykosensis sp. n. is the first record of the genus in the Mediterranean Sea.

Background. Information about iodine intake is crucial for preventing thyroid diseases. Inadequate iodine intake can lead to thyroid diseases, including nontoxic nodular goiter (NNG). Objective. To estimate iodine intake and explore its correlation with thyroid diseases among Israeli adults living near the Mediterranean coast, where iodine-depleted desalinated water has become a major source of drinking water. Methods. Cross-sectional study of patients attending Barzilai Medical Center Ashkelon. Participants, who were classified as either NNG (n = 17), hypothyroidism (n = 14), or control (n = 31), provided serum thyroglobulin (Tg) and completed a semiquantitative iodine food frequency questionnaire. Results. Elevated serum Tg values (Tg > 60 ng/mL) were significantly more prevalent in the NNG group than in the other groups (29% versus 7% and 0% for hypothyroidism and controls, resp., P < 0.05). Mean estimated iodine intake was significantly lower in the NNG group (65 ± 30 μg/d) than in controls (115 ± 60 μg/d) (P < 0.05) with intermediate intake in the hypothyroid group (73 ± 38 μg/d). Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a well-recognized pathogen of humans. To better understand the ecology of the human-pathogenic variants of this bacterium in the environment, a study on the prevalence in bivalves of pathogenic variants (tlh+ and tdh+ and/or trh+) versus a non-pathogenic one (only tlh+ as species marker for V. parahaemolyticus), was performed in two bays in Catalonia, Spain. Environmental factors that might affect dynamics of both variants of V. parahaemolyticus were taken into account. The results showed that the global prevalence of total V. parahaemolyticus found in both bays was 14.2% (207/1459). It was, however, significantly dependent on sampling point, campaign (year) and bivalve species. Pathogenic variants of V. parahaemolyticus (tdh+ and/or trh+) were detected in 3.8% of the samples (56/1459), meaning that the proportion of bivalves who contained tlh gene were contaminated by pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus strains is 27.1% (56/207). Moreover, the presence of pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus (trh+) was significantly correlated with water salinity, thus the probability of finding pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus decreased 1.45 times with every salinity unit (ppt) increased. Additionally, data showed that V. parahaemolyticus could establish close associations with Ruditapes spp. (P-value < 0.001)...

During the summer of 2010, 31 species including fish, echinoderms, gastropods, crustaceans, cephalopods and sponges were sampled in the Bay of Villefranche on the French Mediterranean coast and screened for the presence of PLTX-group toxins using the haemolytic assay. Liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was used for confirmatory purposes and to determine the toxin profile. The mean toxin concentration in the whole flesh of all sampled marine organisms, determined using the lower- (LB) and upper-bound (UB) approach was 4.3 and 5.1 µg·kg−1, respectively, with less than 1% of the results exceeding the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) threshold of 30 µg·kg−1 and the highest values being reported for sea urchins (107.6 and 108.0 µg·kg−1). Toxins accumulated almost exclusively in the digestive tube of the tested species, with the exception of octopus, in which there were detectable toxin amounts in the remaining tissues (RT). The mean toxin concentration in the RT of the sampled organisms (fishes, echinoderms and cephalopods) was 0.7 and 1.7 µg·kg−1 (LB and UB, respectively), with a maximum value of 19.9 µg·kg−1 for octopus RT. Seawater intrusion caused by overabstraction has become an important problem in coastal areas of the Mediterranean. Intrusion processes highly depend on complex local conditions and studies generally focus on specific problems of individual aquifers. Seawater intrusion problems have hardly been addressed at large scale due to the strong impact of local conditions and the problems related to data collection for large geographical areas. To fill this gap and to explore the potential use of readily available data sources, we developed a simple screening methodology for large scale assessment of seawater intrusion risk along the Mediterranean coast of the EU based on a two tiered assessment procedure. Tier 1 is a simple risk assessment based on the balance of groundwater recharge and water abstractions for coastal areas. A positive net groundwater recharge results in transition of the saltwater-freshwater interface to a new equilibrium state. No equilibrium exists with negative net recharge (over-abstraction) and seawater is drawn into the aquifer compensating freshwater losses. Tier 2 provides a quantitative characterization of seawater intrusion for standardized aquifers considering generalized local geological conditions: A simple analytical intrusion model calculates freshwater loss and seawater progression for specified combinations of aquifer properties...

El artículo realiza un análisis comparado de tres destinos turísticos internacionales de especialización residencial que han vivido procesos masivos de urbanización en las últimas décadas: el litoral mediterráneo e insular español, la Costa Azul Francesa y el litoral del estado de Florida. El objetivo principal es contrastar las semejanzas y diferencias de los procesos territoriales ocurridos en dos de los territorios en los que se fraguado la actual crisis económica y donde ésta ha tenido más efecto en el turismo y sobre todo en el sector de la construcción (Florida y el litoral español), y compararlo con lo ocurrido en el litoral mediterráneo francés.; ABSTRACT The article makes a comparative analysis of three international tourism residential destinations that have undergone intensive processes of urbanization in the last few decades: the Mediterranean coast and the two main archipelagos of Spain, the French Riviera, and the coast of Florida. The aim of the research is to analyse the spatial processes which have occurred in the two territories where the current crisis has had more effects in tourism, and above all in the real state sector (Florida and the Spanish coast), and draw a comparison with what happened in the French Mediterranean coast.

Abstract. Spain represents an important part of the tourism sector in theWestern Mediterranean, which has been affected in the past by tsunamis. Although the tsunami risk at the Spanish coasts is not the highest of the Mediterranean, the necessity of tsunami risk mitigation measures should not be neglected. In the Mediterranean area, Spain is exposed to two different tectonic environments with contrasting characteristics. On one hand, the Alboran Basin characterised by transcurrent and transpressive tectonics and, on the other hand, the North Algerian fold and thrust belt, characterised by compressive tectonics. A set of 22 seismic tsunamigenic sources has been used to estimate the tsunami threat over the Spanish Mediterranean coast of the Iberian peninsula and the Balearic Islands. Maximum wave elevation maps and tsunami travel times have been computed by means of numerical modelling and we have obtained estimations of threat levels for each source over the Spanish coast. The sources on the Western edge of North Algeria are the most dangerous, due to their threat to the South-Eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula and to theWestern Balearic Islands. In general, the Northern Algerian sources pose a greater risk to the Spanish coast than the Alboran Sea sources...

RESUMEN: El objetivo del presente trabajo es realizar un análisis comparativo de las Autoridades Portuarias (AAPP) de la Vertiente Mediterránea y su posicionamiento en base a su percepción del “esfuerzo innovador realizado”. Para satisfacer este objetivo se ha realizado un análisis individual de cada puerto (tráfico de mercancías, infraestructuras, conexiones, empresas y líneas implantadas), un análisis comparativo de todos los puertos para obtener una visión global de la situación de la vertiente y, por último, un análisis de fortalezas y debilidades de cada uno de los puertos respecto al total de la vertiente en base a la variable “percepción de esfuerzo innovador realizado por las AAPP”. Los principales resultados obtenidos nos han permitido detectar la especialización existente en las AAPP de la vertiente mediterránea. Por ejemplo, Tarragona está especializada en el tráfico de carbón, mientras que Barcelona lo está en gas natural y petróleo. En el tráfico de mercancías generales sobresale la posición de Valencia, que también ocupa junto a Barcelona las primeras posiciones en tráfico de contenedores. Antibacterial activity of methanolic extracts from 32 macroalgae (13 Chlorophyta and 19 Phaeophyta) from the Atlantic and Mediterranean coast of Morocco were evaluated for the production of antibacterial compounds against Escherichia coliATCC 25922, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Klebsiella pnomeuniae ATCC 700603 and E. faecalis ATCC 29213. Our results indicate that these species of seaweed collected from the Atlantic and Mediterranean coast of Morocco present a significant capacity of antibacterial activities, which makes them interesting for screening for natural products.

The antibacterial activity of extracts from 26 marine Rhodophyceae (8 Ceramiales, 7 Gelidiales, 9 Gigartinales, 1 Bonnemaisoniales and 1 Rhodymeniales) was studied to assess their potential in the pharmaceutical industry. Their bioactivity was analysed from crude methanolic extracts of dried samples against three gram-positive bacteria and two gram-negative bacteria using the disc diffusion technique. The samples were collected from Gibraltar and the Moroccan Mediterranean coast. Of the macroalgae analysed, 96% of extracts were active against at least one of the five test microorganisms. Staphylococcus aureus was the most susceptible microorganism. Methanolic extracts of all seaweed extracts tested in the present study exhibited a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity with inhibition diameters ranging from 10 to 35 mm. An extract of Hypnea musciformis exhibited high antibacterial activity against all the bacteria tested. The results of the present study confirmed the potential use of seaweed extracts as a source of antibacterial compounds.

Talitrus saltator biology, population dynamics, and reproduction were studied more or less simultaneously at three sand beaches: Lavos, on the western coast of Portugal; Collelungo, on the Italian coast of the Thyrrenian Sea; and Zouara, on the northern coast of Tunisia. The species exhibited a consistent pattern of aggregated distribution. Densities were higher at Lavos than at Collelungo and Zouara. Reproduction took place from early March to late September at Lavos and Collelungo, and from late February to early November at Zouara. The average sex ratio was favourable to males at Lavos and Collelungo, and to females at Zouara. Based on data from Lavos, the population abundance was positively correlated with temperature, while the percentage of juveniles in the population was positively correlated with temperature and sediment moisture. Adult individuals from the Atlantic population were larger than the Mediterranean ones, while newborn individuals from the Mediterranean were slightly larger than Atlantic ones. Life span was estimated at 7-11 months at Lavos, 6-9 months at Collelungo, and 6-8 months at Zouara. Cohorts born at the beginning of the reproductive period tend to have shorter lives than the ones born later in the season...

Textularia agglutinans d’Orbigny is a non-symbiont bearing and comparatively large benthic foraminiferal species with a widespread distribution across all oceans. In recent years, its populations have considerably expanded along the Israeli Mediterranean coast of the eastern Levantine basin. Despite its exceptionally widespread occurrence, no molecular data have yet been obtained. This study provides the first ribosomal DNA sequences of T. agglutinans complemented with morphological and ecological characterization, which are based on material collected during environmental monitoring of the hard bottom habitats along the Israeli Mediterranean coast, and from the Gulf of Elat (northern Red Sea). Our phylogenetic analyses reveal that all specimens from both provinces belong to the same genetic population, regardless their morphological variability. These results indicate that modern population of T. agglutinans found on the Mediterranean coast of Israel is probably Lessepsian. Our study also reveals that T. agglutinans has an epiphytic life mode, which probably enabled its successful colonization of the hard bottom habitats, at the Mediterranean coast of Israel, which consist of a diverse community of macroalgae. These results are part of a more extensive study, financed by the Spanish Ministry of Research with the aim to evaluate the traceability of new pollutants on the Mediterranean coast and to determine the removal efficiency of sewage treatment plants (STP) for these pollutants. The compounds which have been analyzed include pharmaceuticals of various therapeutic categories (ibuprofen, acetaminophen, dipyrone, diclofenac, carbamazepine and codeine), pesticides (chlorfenvinfos and permethrin), caffeine, triclosan, bisphenol A and three of their more relevant metabolites (1,7-dimethylxanthine, carbamazepine 10,11-epoxide and 2,7/2,8-dichlorodibenzo-p-dioxin). An SPE/GC–MS multi-residue analytical method was developed and validated to facilitate simultaneous determination of these compounds in both influent and effluent wastewater. The method provided mean recoveries higher than 75%, with the exception of 2,7/2,8-dichlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, dipyrone and permethrin which exhibited recoveries lower than 22%. [EN]The attendance of seabirds to a research trawler along the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula was monitored during six demersal surveys (MEDITS project). Cruises were performed in late spring during the period 1994-1999. Twenty seabird species were recorded, including both breeders and migrants. The four most common species behind the boat were local breeders, namely the Balearic shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus, Cory´s shearwater Calonectris diomedea, Audouin´s gull Larus audouinii and the yellow-legged gull Larus cachinnans. Most seabirds made use of trawler discards to some extent, with the exception of the Puffin Fratercula arctica. Geographically consistent patterns were identified in the six years surveyed. Seabirds were most abundant along the eastern coast of Iberia, especially off the Ebro Delta and around the Columbretes Islands, coinciding with one of the major areas of primary productivity and one of the largest trawling fleets in the western Mediterranean. Hauls, which were carried out in spring between 1994 and 1998, numbered 480. A total of 34 cephalopod species, grouped in 11 families, was found at depths of between 25 and 786 m. Species and samples assemblages were analysed with the Bray-Curtis similarity index. From the physical parameters studied (depth, temperature and bottom type) only depth showed a positive correlation with cephalopod distribution. Three main cephalopod communities were defined: the shelf community (< 150 m), the middle slope community (> 480 m) and a group of cephalopods which were widely distributed more abundantly on the lower continental shelf-upper slope (150-480 m). The Quaternary Besòs delta is located on the Mediterranean coast in NE Spain. The Besòs Delta Complex includes 3 aquifers constituted by 3 sandy and gravelly bodies, separated by lutitic units. These aquifers supply water for domestic and industrial use in this area. Management of groundwater has been problematic in the Besòs delta since the 1960s, and continues to pose major problems for subsurface engineering works in this highly urbanized region. This study seeks to demonstrate the advantages of detailed geological characterization and modeling for designing and constructing a hydrogeological model. Available information of the subsurface was compiled, integrated and homogenized in a geospatial database. The interpretation of these data enabled us to delimit geological units by means of a sequence stratigraphic subdivision. A three-dimensional facies belt-based model of the Besòs delta was built on the basis of this geological characterization. This model was used to constrain the distribution of hydraulic parameters and thus to obtain a consistent hydrogeological model of the delta, which was calibrated by data of water management and production over the last hundred years. En el verano de 2007 un elevado número de delfines listados (Stenella coeruleoalba) apareció varado en la costa Mediterránea en España. Los estudios histopatológicos, inmunohistoquímicos y de RT-PCR realizados a partir de muestras de estos delfines confirmaron la reaparición de una epidemia de morbillivirus, que se extendió posteriormente por el Mediterráneo Francés. En dichas muestras se detectó un Morbillivirus del delfín (DMV, considerado una cepa de la especie Morbillivirus de cetáceos CeMV) muy próximo al virus detectado en la epidemia anterior, ocurrida en 1990. Esta tesis reune tres artículos publicados en revistas científicas y un capítulo de un libro, en los que se describen los hallazgos patológicos en delfines listados varados durante la epidemia en 2007 en Cataluña, y los hallazgos patológicos y de RT-PCR en los delfines listados varados en Cataluña, Comunidad Valenciana y Andalucía en los años posteriores. Los delfines afectados por la epidemia de 2007 mostraron lesiones similares a las descritas en la epidemia de 1990, siendo neumonía bronquiolo-intersticial, depleción linfoide y meningoencefalitis no supurativa los hallazgos microscópicos principales.
