Measurements from two automated fiber analyzers—Kajaani FS-200 and Galai CIS-100—are compared.The FS-200 measures fiber length and coarseness via an indirect optical method.The CIS-100 measures fiber length and width by analyzing video images of fibers. Length-weighted average fiber lengths for the FS-200 were 10–20% lower than those for the CIS-100. Reference measurements from microscopic image analysis suggest that while the CIS-100 measures length more accurately than the FS-200, it is not accurate enough to measure the width of the thin eucalypt fibers used in this study. Both instruments showed good agreement between weight-weighted fiber length for the whole pulp and weight-weighted length calculated from fiber fractions classified in a Bauer–McNett device. Application: Compares the performance of two automatic fiber analyzers, the Kajaani FS-200 and the Galai CIS-100.

O insucesso nos procedimentos cirúrgicos ortopédicos em razão de infecção pode levar a consequências desastrosas como a osteomielite e a perda de próteses implantadas. A infecção hospitalar é um desfecho de causa multifatorial, na qual a esterilização segura do instrumental cirúrgico ocupa uma posição de extrema importância. Não se sabe até o momento quais os reais desafios microbiológicos que a Central de Material e Esterilização (CME) vem enfrentando ao reprocessar a diversidade dos materiais utilizados nos procedimentos cirúrgicos. Micro-organismos com capacidade para esporular estão presentes em quantidade e frequência significativa? Sabe-se que estes se constituem como desafio mensurável na prática da esterilização, fazendo parte de indicadores biológicos. Dissertação de mestrado apresentada ao ISPA - Instituto Universitário; A presente revisão de literatura procura explorar o conceito de Insight e os instrumentos que o avaliam. Insight é tido como fundamental em psicoterapia psicanalítica enquanto um prérequisito para a mudança, um processo necessário em terapia para a ocorrência de mudança ou como um resultado da mudança. Após explorar sumariamente o conceito de Insight e explorar os estudos que têm sido realizados para o estudar, é apresentado a descrição de 8 instrumentos encontrados na literatura que estudam o Insight. Estes instrumentos podem ser agrupados em 3 grupos: 3 instrumentos procuram estudar o que ocorre durante uma sessão de psicoterapia (RQ; RPPS, SIS); 3 instrumentos procuram estudar a mudança (CHAP; PFS; HSCS) e os 2 que procuram estudar o Insight como processo (IRS; I). Concluímos que um dos principais impedimentos nas investigações sobre Insight refere-se à inexistência de uma definição clara e ampla para todas as investigações. This was a systematic review aimed at identifying and characterizing measuring instruments, developed in the context of cardiology, which were adapted into Portuguese language of Brazil. Systematic searches were performed in six databases. Information extracted included cultural adaptation process and measurement properties. To assess the methodological quality of studies, criteria based on international guidelines for cultural adaptation of instruments were used. Among the 114 articles found, 14 were eligible for review. Of these, most evaluated quality of life (35.7%) and health knowledge/learning (28.6%). Most studies followed all stages of the adaptation process recommended in the literature. With respect to measurement properties, internal consistency, verified by Cronbach’s alpha, was the property reported in the majority of the studies, as well as construct and criterion validity. This study is expected to provide to the scientific community a critical evaluation of adapted questionnaires available in the context of cardiology.

Two bioluminescence-measuring instruments, the Turner Design and Lumac systems, were compared with a standard plate culture method for their ability to rapidly screen 400 urine specimens. For cultures with less than 1,000 CFU/ml the Turner Design, with old and new evaluation formulas, gave 6.5 and 50.6% false-positive results, respectively, versus 17.6% at greater than or equal to 500 relative light units with the Lumac. For cultures which had greater than 10(5) CFU/ml the Turner Design gave 39% (old formula) and 14% (new formula) false-negative results compared with 4% at less than 200 relative units with the Lumac. The microorganisms most frequently isolated in the false-negative cultures from either system were gram-positive cocci. Predictive values for a positive test at greater than 10(5) CFU/ml were 77.4% (old formula) and 35.7% (new formula) for the Turner Design versus only 50% for the Lumac at greater than or equal to 500 relative light units. Predictive values for a negative test for both instruments were greater than 88% at greater than 10(5) CFU/ml. This highlight reports on recent efforts to develop and promote health status measurement instruments for use in dialysis units that treat end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients, most of whom are covered for all medical services under Medicare. Readers interested in a more detailed discussion of instruments, including associated data collection and data processing aspects, should consult a recently published account, with its extensive references, of four instruments currently being used in dialysis units (Rettig et al, 1997). Those interested in early reports of the clinical utility of such instruments should consult the following references (Kurtin et al, 1992; Meyer et al., 1994; and DeOreo, 1997).

Background: Teamwork in health care settings is widely recognized as an important factor in providing high quality patient care. However, the behaviors that comprise effective teamwork, the organizational factors that support teamwork, and the relationship between teamwork and patient outcomes remain empirical questions in need of rigorous study. Objective: To identify and review survey instruments used to assess dimensions of teamwork, so as to facilitate high quality research on this topic. Research design: We conducted a systematic review of articles published before September 2012 to identify survey instruments used to measure teamwork and to assess their conceptual content, psychometric validity, and relationships to outcomes of interest. We searched the ISI Web of Knowledge database and identified relevant articles using the search terms team, teamwork, or collaboration in combination with survey, scale, measure, or questionnaire. Results: We found 39 surveys that measured teamwork. Surveys assessed different dimensions of teamwork. The most commonly assessed dimensions were communication, coordination, and respect. Of the 39 surveys, 10 met all of the criteria for psychometric validity, and 14 showed significant relationships to non-self-report outcomes. Introduction: Palliative care is closely linked to the concept of quality of life. In this work we will focus our interest on the need to assess quality of life in oncologic paediatric palliative care.Objective: To describe/compare instruments for measuring quality of life in Oncologic paediatric palliative care.Material and Methods: A literature review of the sever a instruments for measuring quality of life of children under palliative care, in English and Portuguese, between 2000 and 2013, was carried out in the recognized databases for this purpose.Results: We found fifteen measuring instruments: 10 of them were generic and 5 specific. For each instrument the country of origin, the target age group, fill manner, number of evaluated dimensions, description of dimensions, and number of questions, psychometric properties and validation for the Portuguese language were identified.Discussion: There has been a growing concern in measuring quality of life in pediatric age. Most measuring instruments were designed, in the United States, after 1994, coinciding with the World Health Organization definition of quality of life. OBJECTIVE--To compare (1) the reliability of two expensive and two inexpensive measuring instruments, suitable for use in the community and (2) the reliability of experienced compared with inexperienced observers. DESIGN--(1) Ten children aged 5-12 years were each measured three times blindly, and in random order, by two experienced observers using four different portable instruments. (2) Four groups of four children aged 5-11 years were each measured three times blindly, and in random order by four experienced and one inexperienced measurer, using two different portable instruments. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--The precision of height measurements made by different observers using different instruments, expressed in each case as the standard deviation of a single height measurement (SDshm). RESULTS--(1) No significant difference in precision was found between instruments, SDshm ranging from 0.22-0.34 cm. The two observers using apparently the same technique, did however record significantly different absolute heights. (2) No significant difference in precision was found between experienced and inexperienced observers. OBJECTIVE: This study identified which regions of ProTaper instruments work during curved root canal instrumentation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twelve ProTaper instruments of each type, S1, S2, F1, and F2, were assessed morphometrically by measuring tip angle, tip length, tip diameter, length of each pitch along the cutting blades, and instrument diameter at each millimeter from the tip. Curved canals in resin blocks were explored with manual stainless steel files and prepared with ProTaper instruments until the apical end following four distinct sequences of instrumentation: S1; S1 and S2; S1, S2, and F1; S1, S2, F1, and F2. Image analysis was employed for measuring canal diameters. The diameters of the canals and diameters of the instruments were compared. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test. RESULTS: No statistically significant difference was found between the canals and instrument diameters (p>0.05). The largest diameters in the end-point of the instrumented canals were obtained with F1 and F2 instruments and in the initial and middle thirds with S1 and S2 instruments. CONCLUSIONS: All instruments worked at the tip and along their cutting blades, being susceptible to fail by torsion, fatigue, or the combination of these two mechanisms.

Geostatistical modeling in the presence of interaction between the measuring instruments, with an application to the estimation of spatial market potentials

This paper addresses the problem of recovering the spatial market potential of a retail product from spatially distributed sales data. In order to tackle the problem in a general way, the concept of spatial potential is introduced. The potential is concurrently measured at different spatial locations and the measurements are analyzed in order to recover the spatial potential. The measuring instruments used to collect the data interact with each other, that is, the measurement at a given spatial location is affected by the concurrent measurements at other locations. An approach based on a novel geostatistical model is developed. In particular, the model is able to handle both the measuring instrument interaction and the missing data. A model estimation procedure based on the expectation-maximization algorithm is provided as well as standard inferential tools. The model is applied to the estimation of the spatial market potential of a newspaper for the city of Bergamo, Italy. The following article describes the development of instruments for measuring the process of acquiring translation competence in written translation. Translation competence and its process of acquisition are firstly described, and then the lack of empirical research in our field is tackled. Thirdly, three measuring instruments especially developed to measure translation competence acquisition are presented: (i) to measure notions about translation, (ii) to measure students’ behaviour when faced with translation problems, and (iii) to measure errors. Pilot studies were carried out for three years to test, improve and validate the measuring instruments. O presente artigo descreve os procedimentos realizados para determinar as qualidades de medida de quatro instrumentos utilizados com dois grupos amostrais de pais, sendo que um deles é pertinente ao Quebec e o outro, ao Brasil. This paper discusses research on an automatic focusing system for IC-linewidth measuring instruments. The instrument incorporates a collimated light source, a device to move a sample in small, precise increments, and a charge-coupled device. The autofocusing model would measure the step-height of a dielectric sample and correlate the height to a focus position. Thickness of samples on an enlarged scale were measured to verify the feasibility of this device.

Due to the recent advent of diode arrays and their subsequent use in radiometers, there has been some discussion about the accuracy of using diode array radiometry in the measurement of pulsed and flash sources. In order to determine whether or not diode array radiometers are accurate instruments for measuring these sources, a Tracor Northern TN-1710 radiometer, which uses a diode array, and a conventional, single channel Optronic 730A radiometer were used to measure three sources. These three sources consisted of a 45 watt tungsten-halogen lamp pulsed with an optical chopper.- a cathode ray tube (CRT) and a xenon flash. It was determined that there was no significant difference between the measurements taken with either system as long as the intensity of the source was high enough to overcome the inherent noise associated with a diode array.

A recent ASTM specification, E2214-02 Standard Practice for Specifying and Verifying the Performance of Color-Measuring Instruments, was created to standardize the terminology and procedures used to evaluate color measuring instruments. This specification addresses the need for uniformity among the manufacturers of such instruments when quantifying the performance of their products. The scope of E2214 is necessarily large, covering the procedures required to compare instruments for a variety of metrics, all of which are important to their overall performance. In this work, we will focus on one aspect of the instrument evaluation: repeatability performance. We will present repeatability results from a long-term study of twelve commercial spectrophotometers. Part I of this series of papers described the recent ASTM specification, E2214-02 Standard Practice for Specifying and Verifying the Performance of Color-Measuring Instruments, . E2214 is intended to standardize the terminology and procedures used to evaluate color measuring instruments. An experiment was described in which the repeatability of a number of common, commercially available spectrocolorimeters was compared using the ASTM procedures. In this paper, we develop reproducibility results from a medium-term study of ten commercial spectrocolorimeters. The comparisons are presented so as to contrast between the traditional color difference based specifications found in the historical literature and in manufacturer’s literature and the more complex multidimensional methods specified in E2214. Instrument to instrument contrasts are reported as well as tests of agreement across a set of instruments as a whole. The results confirm common understandings. Hemispherical diffuse instruments exhibit a higher level of inter-instrument agreement than do bidirectional (45:0) instruments. The results also provide support for a surprising conclusion about the statistical significance of the minor differences in both inter-instrument agreement and inter-model agreement for a single manufacturer. Revisão sistemática com o objetivo de identificar e caracterizar instrumentos de medida desenvolvidos no contexto da cardiologia que foram adaptados para a língua portuguesa do Brasil. Buscas sistematizadas foram realizadas em seis bases de dados. Extraíram-se informações referentes ao processo de adaptação cultural e as propriedades de medida. Para avaliação da qualidade metodológica dos estudos, foram utilizados critérios com base em diretrizes internacionais para adaptação cultural de instrumentos. Dentre os 114 artigos levantados, 14 foram considerados elegíveis para a revisão. Desses, a maioria avaliava qualidade de vida (35,7%) e conhecimento/aprendizagem em saúde (28,6%). A maioria dos estudos contemplou todas as etapas do processo de adaptação recomendadas pela literatura. Com relação às propriedades de medida, a consistência interna, verificada por meio do alfa de Cronbach, foi a propriedade relatada na maioria dos estudos, bem como as validades de constructo e critério. Com este estudo, espera-se disponibilizar para a comunidade científica uma avaliação criteriosa dos questionários adaptados disponíveis no contexto da cardiologia.

Measuring instruments in economics and the velocity of money

Economic measurements are generated by complicated systems of measurement involving economic and bureaucratic processes. Whether these measuring instruments produce reliable numbers: ‘facts’ that travel well, depends on the qualities of these systems. Ideas from metrology, and from the philosophy and sociology of science, are used to analyse various attempts to measure the velocity of money ranging from the 17th to the 20th centuries. These historical experiences suggest that numerical facts are likely to travel well in economics when the criteria implied by all three of these disciplinary approaches to measurement are met.
