Esta pesquisa de doutorado tem como objeto de estudo o estágio curricular supervisionado na formação inicial universitária do professor para a Educação Básica. Seu objetivo principal é compreender a contribuição do estágio no contexto dos processos formativos dos professores de Matemática. Partindo da compreensão de diversos autores (CHARLOT, 2008; SAVIANI, 2009; FREITAS, 2012; FIORENTINI, 2010) sobre a realidade da escola atual, entende ser necessária uma formação que considere o professor como um intelectual crítico reflexivo (PIMENTA, 2008). Nessa perspectiva, que se considere o estágio como uma atividade teórico-prática, uma atitude investigativa que envolve estudos, análise, problematização, reflexão e proposição de soluções sobre o ensinar e o aprender, sobre o trabalho docente e sobre as práticas institucionais situadas em seus contextos sociais, históricos e culturais (PIMENTA, 2009b; PIMENTA; LIMA, 2010). Este trabalho de pesquisa apresenta o software MiniMatecaVox, este software dará subsídios para o ensino de matemática na fase de alfabetização de crianças deficientes visuais, sendo um recurso tecnológico que irá agregar valor na aprendizagem tanto matemática quanto na utilização de recursos computacionais. O MiniMatecaVox foi desenvolvido baseado nas práticas pedagógicas atuais do ensino de matemática e considerou no seu desenvolvimento as carências encontradas na literatura base desta pesquisa, assim, o software apresenta um ambiente lúdico e agradável para a criança contemplando ao mesmo tempo o ensino de matemática, inclusão digital e recreação das crianças em fase inicial escolar. Além do desenvolvimento deste software, foi proposta uma metodologia de ensino para utilização dos recursos do sistema com abordagens diferenciadas para potencializar o uso do MiniMatecaVox, com o propósito de alcançar melhores resultados na aprendizagem matemática. Students can benefit from the study of a detailed answer of an exercise after trying to solve it in traditional pen-and-paper way as has been verified in literature. This basic fact was the incentive to the creation of a new package, for the growing community of users of Sage Math, that allows an author to add, change and delete parameterized exercise templates, with detailed answer, from one or more personal databases, as well as producing new exercises in a booklet style or exam form.

With regard to education, the humanization process, based on the Cultural-Historical Theory and Activity Theory principles, is materialized through the process of appropriation of knowledge historically constructed. So there is the need of organization of institutionalized education, the contents choice and of teaching activities planning that enable individuals be in activity. The Math Club arises in this context as a learning space organized for children in the early years. Learning triggering situations (LTS) have been prepared in search for situations that promote the different knowledge sharing, collectively, mediated by a content. Algebraic conceptual nexus were chosen as the study object of the individuals in the LTS. Thus, we conducted a didatic experiment, assumed to research methodology, with 12 children from 5th grade of elementary school, from a public school in Goiânia, in order to show evidence of appropriation of the conceptuals nexus of symbolic algebra. Correlation Among Math Anxiety, Attitudes Toward Math, and Math Achievement in Grade 9 Students: Relationships Across Gender

This research evaluated (a) the correlation between math anxiety, math attitudes, and achievement in math and (b) comparison among these variables in terms of gender among grade 9 students in a high school located in southern Ontario. Data were compiled from participant responses to the Attitudes Toward Math Inventory (ATMI) and the Math Anxiety Rating Scale for Adolescents (MARS-A), and achievement data were gathered from participants’ grade 9 academic math course marks and the EQAO Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics. Nonparametric tests were conducted to determine whether there were relationships between the variables and to explore whether gender differences in anxiety, attitudes, and achievement existed for this sample. Results indicated that math anxiety was not related to math achievement but was a strong correlate of attitudes toward math. A strong positive relationship was found between math attitudes and achievement in math. Specifically, self-confidence in math, enjoyment of math, value of math, and motivation were all positive correlates of achievement in math. This project addressed the need for more insightful, current, and applicable resources for intermediate math teachers in Canadian classrooms. A need for a handbook in this division seemed warranted by a lack of government resource support. Throughout an extensive review of the literature, themes and topics for the handbook emerged. The handbook was designed to not only provide educators with examples of effective teaching strategies within the mathematics classroom but to also inform them about the ways in which their personal characteristics and personality type could affect their students and their own pedagogical practices. Three teaching professionals who had each taught in an intermediate math class within the past year evaluated the handbook. The feedback received from these educators was directly applied to the first draft of the handbook in order to make it more accessible and applicable to other math teachers. Although the handbook was written with teachers in mind, the language and format used throughout the manual also make it accessible to parents, tutors, preservice education students, and educational administrators. Essentially, any individual who is hoping to inspire and educate intermediate math students could make use of the content within the handbook.

Abstract: Four second-grade students participated in a B-A-B withdrawal single-subject design experiment. The intervention package implemented consisted of three components: self-monitoring, performance feedback, and reinforcers. Participants completed math probes across phases. Accuracy and productivity was recorded and calculated. Results demonstrated the intervention package improved accuracy and productivity for all participants.

CHDS State/Local; Since the end of the space race in the 1960s, America has been experiencing a decline in its global educational rankings in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) curricula. Due to the interdependencies that education has with a number of our critical sectors, the declining global educational rankings can have serious effects on our national economy, technological advantage and ultimately our national security. With countries like China undertaking intensive civilian educational campaigns, completely modernizing its military, and developing extensive electronic and information warfare capabilities, our technological advantage will be critical to ensure our preparedness for these emerging threats. The inability of society to see this decline and the inability, or lack of desire of our students, to compete and excel globally in the STEM curricula is a collective failure. This thesis examines a number of educational policies and programs and evaluates their focus on developing students' social learning environment and social responsibility toward learning. This study aimed to analyze whether the workshops carried out in Institutional Scholarship Project Initiation to Teaching PIBID,the degree course in math, Federal University of Pelotas promoted selfregulation of learning and teaching of math scholarships, stimulating and describing their processes of learning and teaching. We conducted a qualitative research case study to analyze the contributions that this Project made in relation to the training of future teachers. The PIBID has the objective to support the training of undergraduate students. Understand education in the formation of the individual pervades by understanding the ways of effecting their participation goals for all of its own as a human being and belonging. In this perspective the educational process must be based on full development of psychic abilities of individuals through the appropriation of cultural goods produced by the generations that preceded them. Thus it is only through an education organization concerned with such issues that are consolidated in pedagogical actions aimed at humanizing education. Therefore it is essential to outline proposals for the training of teachers able to implement such issues in dealing directly with the classroom. Recent work has demonstrated that math anxiety is more than just the product of poor math skills. Psychosocial factors may play a key role in understanding what it means to be math anxious, and hence may aid in attempts to sever the link between math anxiety and poor math performance. One such factor may be the extent to which individuals integrate math into their sense of self. We adapted a well-established measure of this degree of integration (i.e., self-other overlap) to assess individuals’ self-math overlap. This non-verbal single-item measure showed that identifying oneself with math (having higher self-math overlap) was strongly associated with lower math anxiety (r = -0.610). We also expected that having higher self-math overlap would leave one especially susceptible to the threat of poor math performance to the self. We identified two competing hypotheses regarding how this plays out in terms of math anxiety. Those higher in self-math overlap might be more likely to worry about poor math performance, exacerbating the negative relation between math anxiety and math ability. This research examines urban middle school students' perceptions of their math and science teachers' behaviors. Specific caring behaviors (challenging questions, encouragement and praise, non-verbal support, understanding and friendly, and controlling -- which refer to teacher's expectations for classroom behavior) were evaluated by 101 students (72 girls and 29 boys) in grades 7, 8, and 9 by means of a survey instrument. Research findings support earlier investigations confirming that boys and girls interpret teacher friendliness differently. However, both male and female students reported similar perceptions of their teachers' behaviors with respect to praise, non-verbal support, and controlling. In addition, a strong correlation existed between students' perceptions of teachers' behaviors and student self reports of academic competence.

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is one of the most commonly diagnosed behavioral disorder in kids, and is estimated to affect about 8-10% of school-aged children. Research shows that out of these children about 26% particularly have Math learning disabilities. The cognitive ability to understand and solve complex mathematical problems requires high level of concentration over a longer duration of time. This ability is disrupted in certain children due to ADHD. Therefore these students are likely to receive lower grades or even failure in standardized measures. However, if an educational environment is created that is specifically targeted towards reducing the disruptive behavioral patterns in these individuals by designing activities that increase engagement time and motivate them to practice mathematical problems, this issue can be addressed effectively. Apart from therapy and medication, an innovative way of learning would help these children focus and concentrate while enabling them to understand complicated math concepts easily. This study was designed to explore trends in the use of 3D graphics and animation software within an educational context to enhance learning and to promote the use of calculators for a broader learning experience. This study targeted students in the GED component of Threshold Center for Alternative Youth Development who specifically were preparing to take the math section of the examination. Evidence from an array of studies (Simonson & Thompson, 1994; Weller, (1996); Lazarowitz and Huppert (1993); Yalcinalp, Geban, and Ozkan (1995) indicates that (computer technology in the classroom can have a positive impact on students learning, in terms of achievement in certain subject areas.

We have developed a layout-based math retrieval system by indexing on pairs of symbols in mathematical expressions. Existing approaches to layout-based retrieval include tree edit distance-based matching on MathML trees (Kamali and Tompa, 2013) and longest common subsequence matching in LATEX strings (Kumar et al., 2012). In our work, we compare our new layout-based retrieval method with a math retrieval system built using the conventional text-based retrieval system Lucene (Zanibbi and Yuan, 2011), as such systems are commonly used for math search. We show that the search results returned by our system are scored by participants in a study as significantly more similar than those of the comparison system and that our system is fast enough to be used in real time.

This study investigated the three variables of deaf girls' attributions for success and failure in mathematics. The three variables are confidence, usefulness of mathematics, and the impact of socializers. There are no research studies about deaf girls and mathematics. Parallel research studies from hearing populations have been done. This study was conducted at Rochester School for the Deaf in New York. The subjects were eleven deaf high school girls ranging from seventh grade to eleventh grade. Also included in the subjects were the eleven parents of the deaf high school girls. The study included both qualitative and quantitative techniques. Qualitative techniques were used to evoke responses in interviews of deaf high school girls and phone interviews from parents of deaf high school girls. Quantitative techniques were used to record grades of the deaf high school girls taking mathematics from their elementary to highs school years. The findings of this study parallel the findings of the hearing populations except for two areas - a high percentage of boys and girls who are treated equally in math class and a low percentage of girls who consults their fathers for help with mathematics. Future research is recommendedto explore other variables of deaf girls' attributions of success and failure in mathematics further. The findings may be parallel to the findings of the hearing populations.

Observations of teachers participating in the Math Partnership Project were conducted to determine how teaching techniques changed over the school year. Staff from the Delaware Education Research and Development Center conducted 35 observations of math lessons during fall 2008 and 35 observations during spring 2009. Thirty of the teachers observed in spring were also observed in fall. The observations conducted included three main components: The design and implementation of the lesson, mathematics content, and elements of classroom culture. The data gathered indicate a positive change towards better teaching techniques; in all three components.
