The influence on local government organization and management of new public management practices promoted by national administrative reforms remains an issue of contention. On one hand, some authors argue that these reforms have produced similar results at both the central and local levels of government (John 2001; Sanderson 2001; Van Gramberg & Teicher 2000). Others consider that the political nature of elected mayors and their legitimacy derived from close proximity with voters has limited its impact at the local level (McLaughlin 2002). However, it is unquestionable that local governance has changed over the years, distancing itself from traditional management involving clearly defined hierarchical relations, long-lasting career systems, bureaucratic control mechanisms, and in-house production. The influence of Public Choice theory and the New Public Management reforms have transformed local governance, albeit the degree of change remains under dispute. These changes resulted in the adoption of alternative mechanisms to deliver public services based on the externalization of service delivery, either using market approaches or employing partnerships with nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). The influence of New Public Management reforms brought about new service delivery arrangements replacing traditional bureaucratic in-house supply. Examples of these arrangements include: 1) CCT (Compulsory Competitive Tendering) replacing service delivery through in-house formal hierarchy with contracting (Fenwick...

Banking channel management has become a crucial component in the drive for improved efficiency. Since the channel is the interlocutor between customers and products, banks are leveraging their knowledge of channels to efficiently address perfect product portfolio through the most cost-effective and profitable channel. This thesis describes some ideas currently influencing banking channel management strategy and how banks can manage and take advantage of these factors through focusing on efficiency, customer segmentation and channel interaction versus cost structure. It first provides a global perspective of the banking industry through a survey of four regions and countries, and then reviews current trends and strategies applied by banks and consulting firms. On this foundation, it makes recommendations as to how the industry can best adapt to changes in banking channel management in order to remain competitive and efficient.; by Renato Teixeira Catalan.; Thesis (S.M.M.O.T.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, Management of Technology Program, 2004.; Includes bibliographical references (leaves 112-115).

In order to survive, the steel industry has undergone traumatic changes in the last years. A thirty years old overcapacity combined with a slow growing market led to a steadily eroding profitability of steel companies, particularly in developed economies. These factors determined an industry profile delineated by a relentless quest for cost cutting and efficient operations. Regarding innovation, the approach of the steel industry has been reactive, basically following market requirements. The industry has historically found itself far from its customers businesses and has struggled to find innovative products and services that could meet an unperceived or unarticulated need so as to propose higher value and grow its market. Two important customers of the steel industry are the oil and gas and the automotive industries, two mature businesses as well. Even when changes in these two steel users have also been relatively slow, the more recent technological trends analyzed in this work suggest an upcoming faster pace of change. This thesis examines these recent technological trends in the oil and gas and automotive industries with regards to the potential impact in the steel industry. Some of the technological gaps that might be encountered in those trends are visited...

In the backdrop of the dotcom bubble burst, companies cleaned up the excesses of the nineties and are more agile and efficient than ever before. However, companies face tremendous pressure to improve shareholder returns. A new trend is emerging as more and more capital is flowing into Private equity, especially in the buyout industry. Both established and entrepreneurial companies are exploring new ways to partner with Private equity firms to restructure and build long-term shareholder value. In this thesis, I will perform an in-depth study of private equity led merger and acquisitions trends since the bubble burst. I will investigate the emerging trend of tech buyouts, activist led corporate governance reforms, analyse tech buyout transactions from 2000-2005 and comparative study of 3 tech buyout firms, and leadership challenges in the private equity industry.; by Pradeep Gupta.; Thesis (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2006.; Includes bibliographical references (leaves 107-110).

Economic and market forces as well as technological progress emerging throughout the last decade signifies the Geographically Distributed Development (GDD) or Global Software Development (GSD) as a software industry norm or necessity that is receiving considerable interest from companies all over the world. This thesis clarifies the terms used in distributed development practice, studies the status, key business drivers and major challenges of GDD or GSD, and then proposes a revised six-force framework to leverage the capabilities of geographically distributed development model. The proposed framework covers both the strategic and tactic aspects of investing and managing a global project team, including Strategic Vision and Management Skills, Organizational Structure and Team Building, Collaborative Technologies, Development Methodology and Software Life-Cycle Management in planning and managing distributed project and leveraging global teams. This thesis uses a case study to validate the challenges and concerns identified and to conclude that many problems in geographically distributed development can be overcome to enable companies to systematically harness the potential of this development model.; by Yuhong Yin.; Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology...

The management of global supply chains and the impact of 3BL do not represent a rupture but rather another stage of evolution in the expansion of scope that the area of operations management has been experiencing since the beginning of the 20th Century. It is a fact, however, that the current stage of evolution is occurring in a more accelerated rate than in previous stages and it is also a fact that the levels of volatility, complexity and social pressure on supply chains today and in the future do not have historical precedence. This is one of the reasons why logistics and supply chains will continue to be important factors of differentiation in the market for a long time in the future. But what are the future tendencies for the management of supply chains and how should managers prepare themselves for these tendencies? The goal of this article is to briefly revisit the history of the field and then explore these questions.

Approved for public release; distribution unlimited.; Through a survey of 89 collegiate schools of business, 197^ usage of management gaming in both undergraduate and graduate curriculums was determined and compared to the results of a similar survey of 107 schools of business in 1962. The results of the 197^ survey provided conclusive evidence that in the years following 1962, management gaming has gained increased acceptance and use as an educational technique. This increase in acceptance and use of management gaming from 1962 to 197^- was brought to light by two primary findings of this comparative study. First, that while in 1962 only 71% of the survey respondents reported that a management game was being used in some way in the institution's curriculum, in 197^ > 95% of the survey respondents reported using a management game. Secondly, the average percentage of course time devoted to management gaming, for all undergraduate and graduate courses reporting the use of management games, increased from 20% of course time in 1962 to 32% of course time in 1974.; http://archive.org/details/recenttrendsinma00stra; Ensign, United States Navy

Sponsored Report (for Acquisition Research Program); This research builds upon the emerging body of knowledge on contract management workforce competence and organizational process capability. In 2003, the Contract Management Maturity Model (CMMM) was first developed for the purpose of assessing Department of Defense (DoD) and defense contractor organizational contract management process capability. The CMMM has been previously applied at Air Force, Army, Navy, and defense contractor organizations. During the period between 2008 and 2009, assessments were conducted at three specific Army Contracting Command (ACC) contracting centers using the CMMM. These organizations included the Army Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM) Contracting Center, Joint Munitions and Lethality (JM&L) Contracting Center, and the National Capital Region (NCR) Contracting Center. The primary purpose of this paper is to summarize the assessment ratings, analyze the assessment results in terms of contract management process maturity, and discuss the implications of these assessment results for process improvement and knowledge management opportunities. This paper will also provide insight on consistencies and trends from these assessment results to DoD contract management. Finally...

Providing opportunities for outdoor recreation and maintaining ecological integrity are primary management objectives for protected spaces in the public domain, but as visitation and visitor expectations change, a balance must be maintained between environmental and visitor use that is consistent with management goals. There is an increasing dependence on public participation in protected area management to compensate for an increasing budgetary gap between desired and actual management states. The Investigator explores how science, public perception, and collaborative relationships with stakeholders influence management planning and what the effect has been on management action. How has that balance between visitor use and environmental preservation objectives been affected? Three case study sites were selected in eastern Ontario: a national park, a provincial park, and a municipal forest. For each site, semi-structured interviews with staff and stakeholders were conducted, guiding legislation and supporting documents were analysed, and site observational evidence was collected. The data was analyzed using methodological triangulation and McCracken’s (1988) four-part method of inquiry. The results identified each site’s management goals and the management planning and action utilized to achieve those goals. The integration of environmental science and the role of public perception and participation are described as well as the nature of the management response. The discussion identifies management trends across the three governmental levels...

When starting research on leadership, we identify each of the types of leaders in the world. Realizing that even in an organization the visible head of this is well-known, the new management trends demonstrate that the success of a company depends on the leader that conducts it. There are still many things to learn about these new management trends. So it is necessary to reflect on what are the most appropriate management systems to bring success to any company.

The human resources (HR) function has evolved significantly over the past several decades. It has grown in maturity and influence while simultaneously enduring great criticism from employees and managers. Meanwhile, environmental pressures have forced business leaders and academics to call for the elevation of HR to a level of strategic primacy. This thesis examines the relationship between organizational human capital and the professional HR function, looking at the history and current state of HR, perceptions of HR's efficacy, trends in innovative organizational design and leadership, and the future of human capital management. I explore these issues in the academic and popular literature, survey managers and experts in the field, and present an intra-industry study across several biotechnology firms.; by Jeffrey M. The software product business reached the $150 billion mark at the end of 2005. The pricing and licensing of new products, maintenance services, services and service maintenance have become an important strategy to deliver smooth and steady revenue growth. The main objective of this thesis work is to observe the trends among various revenue prospects such as product sales, maintenance sales, service sales and service maintenance sales revenue. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses are pursued to achieve the research objectives. The software industry has gone through several transformations from its debut. Initially, it started as service-oriented industry and then transitioned into a product-oriented industry and is currently transforming into a hybrid of both product and service industries. Just as the industry has undergone from a service to a product to a service (more like a hybrid) oriented industry, so too has the product licensing and maintenance licensing scenario been changing. Perpetual licensing has established its strong presence from the very beginning. While both single user and concurrent user licensing models were standard license offerings, concurrent licensing has been eliminated from the enterprise application segment. A usage-based licensing model is gaining popularity but perpetual licensing continues to be the preferred one. Software firms sell a lot of products early on and fail to keep up the same rate of new sales to new customers. From the regression model...

Mixed methods research (MMR), which is touted as a third methodological movement is increasingly becoming a popular approach in several fields as a result of the promise it holds to providing a better and balanced investigation of research problems in context. In spite of that, there is limited knowledge about its pervasiveness in economic and management sciences in South Africa. Based on a content analysis of 332 articles published in The South African Journal of Economic and Management Sciences from 2003 to 2011, the main purpose of this quantitative study is to explore the prevalence of MMR in SAJEMS. Although methodological advances have been made in the field of economic and management sciences as reflected in the articles in SAJEMS, the findings reveal that scholars employ quantitative and qualitative methodologies than MMR. Given the paucity of MMR in the field, this study underscores the potential benefits of embracing methodological pluralism as it offers methodological and theoretical benefits. First, the use of MMR provides the possibility for researchers to obtain a comprehensive picture of a phenomenon under investigation and achieve their research purpose effectively. Secondly, its utilisation may also contribute to theory development and the maturity of the field as reflected in SAJEMS.
