Beyond the composition of the usual macronutrients and micronutrients, it is important to provide information on the composition of bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity of foods, particularly of wild species to regain them for nowadays dietary habits. Many greens are known as excellent sources of natural antioxidants, and consumption of fresh plants in the diet may contribute to the daily antioxidant intake. In the present study five leafy wild greens traditionally consumed (Borago officinalis, Montia fontana, Rorippa nasturtium-aquaticum, Rumex acetosella, Rumex induratus) were studied in order to document macronutrients, micronutrients and non-nutrients composition. R. induratus revealed the highest levels of sugars, ascorbic acid, tocopherols, lycopene, chlorophylls, flavonoids, and one of the highest antioxidant activity expressed as DPPH scavenging activity, B-carotene bleaching inhibition, and TBARS formation inhibition. R. nasturdium-aquaticum showed the healthier PUFA/SFA and n-6/n-3 ratios, and B. officinalis proved to be a source of Y-linolenic acid and other fatty acids from n-6 series that are precursors of mediators of the inflammatory response. The nutritional characteristics and antioxidant potential of these wild greens require reconsideration of their role in traditional as well as in contemporary diets. Furthermore...

Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has become an analytical tool for the direct analysis of a large variety of materials in order to provide qualitative and/or quantitative information. However, there is a lack of information for LIBS analysis of agricultural and environmental samples. In this work a LIBS system has been evaluated for the determination of macronutrients (P, K, Ca, Mg) in pellets of vegetal reference materials. An experimental setup was designed by using a Nd:YAG laser operating at 1064 nm and an Echelle spectrometer with ICCD detector. The plasma temperature was estimated by Boltzmann plots and instrumental paragmeters such as delay time, lens-to-sample distance and pulse energy were evaluated. Certified reference materials as well as reference materials were used for analytical calibrations of P, K, Ca, and Mg. Most results of the direct analysis of plant samples by LIBS were in reasonable agreement with those obtained by ICP OES after wet acid decomposition. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Influence of some environmental variables in the loss of macronutrients N, P, K, from the hydrographic basin of the River Ivaí were analysed. Water samples of the river were monthly collected for five consecutive days during a year. In terms of total intervals of average monthly values and total average values experiment results, in mg L-1, were: N (0.32-3.22 and 1.65); K (0.73-2.69 and 1.38); P (not detected-0.39 and 0.076); COD (0.21-36.0 and 12.8); O2(dis) (1.89-8.40 and 5.43); and temperature (ºC) (16.0-30.8 and 24.6); pH (5.18-8.50 and 7.15). Statistical analysis of data showed that quantity of macronutrient (N, K, P) carried off from the hydrographic basin of the River Ivaí were directly correlated to fluviometric levels (caused by rainfall and floodings) at 5% level of significance. Carried off quantities, in t a-1, were N = 25,136.0; K = 21,010.0 and P = 1,161.2.

The in vivo biotransformations of drugs known to be metabolized by enzymes localized in the endoplasmic reticulum of liver can be greatly altered by diet in humans, as we have shown previously. Steroid hormones also are metabolized extensively by hepatic microsomal enzymes; therefore, we examined the possibility that testosterone and estradiol biotransformations, as assessed with radiolabeled tracer methods, could be influenced by dietary macronutrients. Normal males were fed a high-protein diet for 2 weeks, followed by a high-carbohydrate diet for an additional 2 weeks. The delta 4-5 alpha-reduction of testosterone was considerably diminished, while the cytochrome P-450-dependent hydroxylation of estradiol at the C2 position was substantially enhanced during ingestion of the high-protein diet as compared with the high-carbohydrate diet. These results indicate that dietary macronutrients can significantly alter major metabolic pathways for testosterone and estradiol in man. The mechanism by which reciprocal changes in the delta 4-5 alpha-reduction of testosterone and the cytochrome P-450-mediated oxidation of estradiol are produced by diets is not known. Similar changes in steroid delta 4-5 alpha-reduction and cytochrome P-450-dependent chemical oxidations have been observed in circumstances in which the mixed-function oxidase system in liver is induced by agents such as phenobarbital...

The genes contributing to childhood obesity are categorized into three different types based on distinct genetic and phenotypic characteristics. These types of childhood obesity are represented by rare monogenic forms of syndromic or non-syndromic childhood obesity, and common polygenic childhood obesity. In some cases, genetic susceptibility to these forms of childhood obesity may result from different variations of the same gene. Although the prevalence for rare monogenic forms of childhood obesity has not increased in recent times, the prevalence of common childhood obesity has increased in the United States and developing countries throughout the world during the past few decades. A number of recent genome-wide association studies and mouse model studies have established the identification of susceptibility genes contributing to common childhood obesity. Accumulating evidence suggests that this type of childhood obesity represents a complex metabolic disease resulting from an interaction with environmental factors, including dietary macronutrients. The objective of this article is to provide a review on the origins, mechanisms, and health consequences of obesity susceptibility genes and interaction with dietary macronutrients that predispose to childhood obesity. It is proposed that increased knowledge of these obesity susceptibility genes and interaction with dietary macronutrients will provide valuable insight for individual...

Malnutrition is associated with increased risk of mortality in hemodialysis patients. And insufficient dietary intake is the common cause for malnutrition. So, in order to survey the dietary intake of hemodialysis patients and study the relationship between the dietary feature and nutritional status, a cross-sectional study was performed. 75 hemodialysis patients from South China participated in the dietary intake survey and nutrition assessment. A three-day diet diary record was used to estimate the major dietary macronutrients. Nutritional status was assessed by malnutrition-inflammation score (MIS) in addition to several related anthropometric measurements. Serum albumin, transferrin, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to quantify the assessing value of independent parameters for nutritional status. The results showed that 48% patients were malnourished according to the MIS. The malnourished patients had a lower body mass index (BMI), fat mass (FM), albumin and a higher level of CRP, compared with normal nourished patients (P < 0.05). However, no significant differences of macronutrients (calories, protein, fat, carbohydrates, etc) were found between the two nutrition groups (P > 0.05). The multivariate regression analysis showed that the major macronutrients had no significant association with MIS (P > 0.05). In conclusion...

It has been known for over a century that the dose–response curve for many micronutrients is non-monotonic, having an initial stage of increasing benefits with increased intake, followed by increasing costs as excesses become toxic. This phenomenon, termed Bertrand's rule, is widely assumed not to apply to caloric macronutrients. To date this assumption has been safe, owing to the considerable methodological challenges involved in coaxing animals to over-ingest macronutrients in a way that enables the effects of specific food components to be isolated. Here we report an experiment which overcomes these difficulties, to test whether the second phase (incurring costs with excessive intake) applies to carbohydrate intake by the generalist-feeding caterpillar Spodoptera littoralis. The results showed that excess carbohydrate intake caused increased mortality, thus extending Bertrand's rule to macronutrients.

This study aimed to identify the visual symptoms of deficiencies of nutrients and dry mass production in seedlings of cherry (Amburana acreana), grown in nutrient solution. Cherry seedlings were grown in tubes 180 cm³ and later transplanted into plastic bags (17 x 10 cm). Upon reaching 20 cm height were transplanted to PVC tubes filled with sand and subjected to 30 days to complete nutritive solution, corresponding to the period of adaptation. Then the seedlings were subjected for 90 days, to complete nutrient solutions and with the omission of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, constituting seven treatments and three replications in a randomized design. Every 30 days, the seedlings were assessed for height and diameter, and deficiency symptoms were identified and photographed. After 90 days of application of nutrient solution, the seedlings were dried and the dry biomass was determinate. It was concluded that P, S and N were the macronutrients that limit the growth of seedlings Amburana acreana and P and S, the dry mass production. There was greater absorption of N, P and K in shoots of the seedlings and N and Mg by root.; Este trabalho teve por objetivo identificar a sintomatologia visual das carências de macronutrientes e produção de massa seca em mudas de cerejeira (Amburana acreana)...

The purpose was to determine whether 34 young Spanish males belonging to a cyclist team, follows the optimal macronutrients intake based on the ecommended dietary guidelines. The deficits in nutrition jeopardise the sportive performances, but what about the diets with excessive intake of macronutrients? Furthermore, is there an association between their sportive achievements and the psychological profile? Surely, but the problem is to determine which psychological variables are involved. Method: Nutritional evaluation based on Nutrients intake questionnaire of 7 consecutive days. Results: Cyclists consume an excessive quantity of proteins and lipids in their diets. The average consumption of proteins is 16,36% of their caloric intake (the recommended quantity is less than 10%). The average consumption of fats is 38,71% (the recommended is less than 30%). The same tendency is found in the homologous Spanish young people of the enKID study, where the percentage of energy from fat and saturated fat is much higher than the recommended one. The cyclists consume insufficient quantities of carbohydrates (average is 44, 94% of their caloric intake, the recommended is more than 60%), therefore the reload of their glycogen stores may not be complete on each competition stage. No association has been found between the excessive intake of referred macronutrients and the achieved sport performances. Conclusion: This work contributes to the knowledge of the diets of very active young cyclists. Excessive intake of proteins and fats do not jeopardise their sportive performances. The commonly studied psychological variables in sport...

Monitoring of energy distribution of the three macronutrients of diet could be beneficial in order to improve the physiological status of elderly people. The objective of this study is to analyse total daily energy intake as well as the caloric contribution of the macronutrients and alcohol, which make up basic diet of five nursing homes in León (Spain). Dietary consumption was evaluated in a group of 107 elderly people, aged 65-98 years. A precise weighing method was used to conduct the control of food intake covering seven days. Protein, carbohydrates, fat, alcohol, dietary fiber and cholesterol intake were obtained. Weight, and Height also were measured. Total dietary energy intake was significantly higher in men (130.5%) than in women (115.6%), with regard to recommended value. Relative contribution of macronutrients to total energy intake is extremely unbalanced. Energy derived from protein was very high (16.7%), energy derived from fat was also very high, and significantly higher for females (39.6%) than for males (34.4%), whereas the proportion derived from carbohydrates was very low, although also significantly higher in females (41.5%) than in males (35.8%), due to the high energy percentage that make up the alcohol intake in males (9.1%). A review of the diet offered by nursing homes...
