We study a five-parameter lifetime distribution called the McDonald extended exponential model to generalize the exponential, generalized exponential, Kumaraswamy exponential and beta exponential distributions, among others. We obtain explicit expressions for the moments and incomplete moments, quantile and generating functions, mean deviations, Bonferroni and Lorenz curves and Gini concentration index. The method of maximum likelihood and a Bayesian procedure are adopted for estimating the model parameters. The applicability of the new model is illustrated by means of a real data set.; FAPESP; FAPESP [2010/04496-2]; CNPq, Brazil; CNPq (Brazil)

In vitro analysis of the catalytic DNA polymerase encoded by vaccinia virus has demonstrated that it is innately distributive, catalyzing the addition of <10 nucleotides per primer-template binding event in the presence of 8 mM MgCl2 or 40 mM NaCl (W. F. McDonald and P. Traktman, J. Biol. Chem. 269:31190–31197, 1994). In contrast, cytoplasmic extracts isolated from vaccinia virus-infected cells contain a highly processive form of DNA polymerase, able to catalyze the replication of a 7-kb template per binding event under similar conditions. To study this holoenzyme, we were interested in purifying and characterizing the vaccinia virus processivity factor (VPF). Our previous studies indicated that VPF is expressed early after infection and has a native molecular mass of ∼48 kDa (W. F. McDonald, N. Klemperer, and P. Traktman, Virology 234:168–175, 1997). Using these criteria, we established a six-step chromatographic purification procedure, in which a prominent ∼45-kDa band was found to copurify with processive polymerase activity. This species was identified as the product of the A20 gene. By use of recombinant viruses that direct the overexpression of A20 and/or the DNA polymerase, we verified the physical interaction between the two proteins in coimmunoprecipitation experiments. We also demonstrated that simultaneous overexpression of A20 and the DNA polymerase leads to a specific and robust increase in levels of processive polymerase activity. Taken together...

Ca2+-dependent hydrophobic-interaction chromatography is a powerful tool for the identification and isolation of a variety of Ca2+-binding proteins which expose a hydrophobic site(s) in the presence of Ca2+ [Gopalakrishna & Anderson (1982) Biochem. Biophys. Res. Commun. 104, 830-836; Walsh, Valentine, Ngai, Carruthers & Hollenberg (1984) Biochem. J. 224, 117-127; McDonald & Walsh (1985) Biochem. J. 232, 559-567]. Using this approach, we isolated two potent and specific protein inhibitors of protein kinase C, of 17 kDa [McDonald & Walsh (1985) Biochem. J. 232, 559-567] and 12 kDa [McDonald & Walsh (1986) Biochem. Soc. Trans. 14, 585-586]. Although these inhibitors were purified by Ca2+-dependent hydrophobic-interaction chromatography and exhibit properties similar to those of calmodulin and related Ca2+-binding proteins, we were unable to demonstrate high-affinity Ca2+ binding to these inhibitors, using equilibrium dialysis. Protein kinase C exhibited half-maximal activity at 0.6 microM-Ca2+ in the presence of phospholipid and diacylglycerol, and complete inhibition by both inhibitors was observed over the range of Ca2+ concentrations examined (10 nM-10 microM). These observations suggest that the inhibitory action of these proteins does not require Ca2+. The inclusion of proteinase inhibitors during isolation of the kinase C inhibitors...

Promotion of osteoclast apoptosis is one therapeutic approach to osteoporosis. Calmodulin, the major intracellular Ca2+ receptor, modulates both osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption. The calmodulin antagonist, trifluoperazine, rescues bone loss in ovariectomized mice (Zhang, L., Feng, X., and McDonald, J. M. (2003) Endocrinology 144, 4536–4543). We show here that a 3-h treatment of mouse osteoclasts with either of the calmodulin antagonists, tamoxifen or trifluoperazine, induces osteoclast apoptosis dose-dependently. Tamoxifen, 10 μm, and trifluoperazine, 10 μm, induce 7.3 ± 1.8-fold and 5.3 ± 0.9-fold increases in osteoclast apoptosis, respectively. In Jurkat cells, calmodulin binds to Fas, the death receptor, and this binding is regulated during Fas-mediated apoptosis (Ahn, E. Y., Lim, S. T., Cook, W. J., and McDonald, J. M. (2004) J. Biol. Chem. 279, 5661–5666). In osteoclasts, calmodulin also binds Fas. When osteoclasts are treated with 10 μm trifluoperazine, the binding between Fas and calmodulin is dramatically decreased at 15 min and gradually recovers by 60 min. A point mutation of the Fas death domain in the Lpr−cg mouse renders Fas inactive. Using glutathione S-transferase fusion proteins, the human Fas cytoplasmic domain is shown to bind calmodulin...

Background. Clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) is the first neurologic episode of multiple sclerosis (MS). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and clinical features are used to predict risk of conversion to MS. Objectives. The aim of this prospective study is to evaluate predictors of conversion of CIS to McDonald MS. Method. 97 patients with CIS have been followed for 2 years. Age of onset, gender, initial clinical presentation, and MRI brain and spine were assessed. The 2010 revised McDonald criteria were applied. Results. Fifty-nine patients (60.8%) with CIS converted to McDonald MS after 10.1 + 4.2 months. Thirty-seven (38.1%) of the convertors satisfied the diagnostic criteria based on the radiological parameters, while 21.7% sustained their second clinical events. A multivariate regression analysis revealed that high number of lesions in MRI (P = 0.001) and earlier age of onset (P = 0.043) predicted the conversion of CIS to McDonald MS. Gender (P = 0.5) and initial clinical presentation (optic pathway (P = 0.4), supratentorial (P = 0.91), brain stem/ cerebellum (P = 0.97), and spinal (P = 0.76)) were not statistically significant. Conclusion. Age of onset and MRI parameters can be used as predictors of CIS conversion to McDonald MS. Application of the 2010 revised McDonald criteria allows an earlier MS diagnosis.

This paper aims to describe a wide range of policies that might be used to stop or reverse the downward slide of fertility rates. In advance, however, several points need to be made: 1. Low fertility exists in countries with widely differing institutional structures. Policies to support fertility must work from these pre-existing structures. For example, if child care provided by low-wage, undocumented immigrants is a factor related to higher fertility rates in the United States, this does not mean that this is a policy to be recommended for Sweden which has a long-established, high-quality, state-subsidised child care system. In other words, there can be no single cross-national model for success. Each country must seek its own institutionally-appropriate approach. Also, each country must deal with the realities of its own political economy. Strategies will not be accepted if they are not supported by the populace. For example, while I argue that changes in the level of gender equity within the family are an essential element of a fertility strategy in any country, family organisation is fundamental to cultural identity and revolutionary change is rarely a possibility (McDonald 2000a; McDonald 2000b). 2. Second, as far as possible...

Subtype-specific incidence patterns in populations at high risk of lymphoma offer insight into lymphomagenesis. The incidence profiles for the 2 most common non-Hodgkin lymphoma subtypes were compared for 2 immunodeficient populations, adults receiving a kidney transplant 1982-2003 (n = 7,730) or diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection 1982-2004 (n = 17,175). National, population-based registries were linked and standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) were computed for each cohort and lymphoma subtype. Risk of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma was significantly increased after transplantation (SIR 17.83, 95% CI: 13.61-22.95) and after HIV infection (SIR 58.81, 95% CI: 52.59-65.56). Rates of follicular lymphoma (FL) were neither significantly increased nor decreased in transplant recipients (SIR 0.82, 95% CI: 0.10-2.96) and in people with HIV (SIR 1.25, 95% CI: 0.41-2.91).

In this report I will be examining illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing of the Patagonian Toothfish in the Heard Island and McDonald Island Fishery. Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing is a global problem facing the world's fish stocks. The demand comes from an increasing world population, which includes populous industrialising second and third world nations wanting their share of the global seafood supply. The Patagonian Toothfish population in Heard Island and McDonald Island fishery is under threat from this increasing demand. It is in Australia's interest to protect its economic security and food security. It is also Australia's legal responsibility. There are still many legal challenges to overcome in order to eradicate the global threat of illegal fishing. Australia is a leader in addressing illegal fishing. Australia helped establish the first instruments to address illegal fishing which were the Law of the Sea, as well as other agreements like UN Fish Stocks Agreement. Australia also domestically took action and introduced the Fisheries Management Act 1991. Despite Australia's leadership role and efforts there are still many legal framework mechanisms protecting pirate fishermen rather than protecting our ocean's fish stocks. In Chapter Two I will examine the complex nature of international marine law and uncover some of these mechanisms. In Chapter Three...

This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available in Law Quarterly Review Vol. 131, pp. 34-39. It may also be accessed via Westlaw UK (https://login.westlaw.co.uk/), with a valid subscription.; The Court of Appeal in McDonald v McDonald [2014] EWCA Civ 1049 refused to introduce a proportionality assessment into the process of granting a possession order under section 21 Housing Act 1988. In reaching this conclusion, the court engaged with, but ultimately rejected, the possibility of horizontal effect of article 8 in relation to possession actions against tenants by private landlords. The result in this case is correct ? there is no opportunity within the statutory scheme for a proportionality assessment. If one is required, the statutory provisions must be amended, but the court?s reasoning in reaching this result fails to distinguish between direct horizontal effect, whereby an obligation is imposed onto the landlord, and statutory horizontal effect whereby an obligation is imposed onto the court through the interpretation obligation of section 3(1) HRA 1998. This results in a misrepresentation of the relevant Strasbourg authorities, giving rise to the potential for confusion in future cases.

Wayne Batchis; The case of McDonald v. Chicago in 2010 is responsible for the incorporation of the Second Amendment against the States through the Fourteenth Amendment in a contentious plurality opinion. The groundwork for this decision was laid down in District of Columba v. Heller, a pivotal case two years prior where the Court pronounced that the right to bear arms inherent in the Second Amendment was an individual one, embodying the principles of personal self-defense in the home. I am arguing that the holding in the McDonald decision, incorporating the Second Amendment, was merely a continuation of the fallacies committed in the Heller opinion. Utilizing Justice Antonin Scalia???s own framework, I analyze the Second Amendment???s right to bear arms through the lens of a textual originalist, compiling an original understanding of the provision through the use of relevant history. It will be argued that the proper conception of the right to bear arms as originally understood was akin to a collective right, serving as a bulwark against a tyrannical central government and ensuring that a standing army would never come to fruition. The Court???s precedent on incorporation necessitates that in order for a provision in the Bill of Rights to serve as a restriction at the state level...

Abstract McDonald's production system includes a variety of firms and processes.
