The aim of this study is to carry out a socio-linguistic analysis of the dissemination of the Charter of Citizens’ Rights and Obligations in Public Health Services. We designed a qualitative investigation using observation and content analysis. A deductive analysis technique was followed, based on the “SPEAKING” model categories. The data analysis suggests a clear framework of rights and obligations has been established, but is not very familiar to patients and relatives. We can conclude that despite the widespread dissemination and publicity of the Citizens’ Charter of Rights and Obligations, we still need the involvement of professionals. Nurses can develop a fundamental role in this process.

Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo analisar a importância de se trabalhar uma fase intermediária, que estaria entre a escrita e a reescrita, de um texto narrativo. A partir de um texto narrativo produzido por meus alunos de uma 6ª série de um colégio da rede particular de ensino, elaborei seis exercícios que envolviam recursos lingüísticos que fazem parte do conteúdo programático desta série, que neste trabalho são chamados de exercícios de análise lingüística, apliquei esses exercícios em momentos distintos das aulas de Língua Portuguesa e observei de que maneira eles fizeram uso dos recursos lingüísticos nas duas vezes em que reescreveram o texto narrativo produzido individualmente por eles. É importante ressaltar que as reescritas não foram corrigidas em nenhum momento por mim. que, além de pesquisadora, era professora da turma. Substance use is a pervasive health problem. Therapeutic community (TC) is an established substance abuse treatment but TC environments are stressful and dropout rates are high. Mindfulness-based TC (MBTC) intervention was developed to address TC stress and support self-change that could impact treatment retention. Self-change was assessed through feeling and thinking word-use in written stories of stress from 140 TC residents in a historical control group and 253 TC residents in a MBTC intervention group. Data were collected 5 times over a 9-month period. Linguistic analysis showed no differences between the groups over time; however, over all time points, the MBTC intervention group used fewer negative emotion words than the TC control group. Also, negative emotion (p<.01) and anxiety (p<.01) word-use decreased while positive emotion word-use increased (p<.05) over time in both groups. Descriptive data from linguistic analyses indicated that sustained self-change demands participation in mindfulness behaviors beyond the instructor-guided MBTC intervention.

A linguistic analysis was performed on the Preschool Five Minute Speech Sample (PFMSS) of 42 parents. PFMSS is a validated measure for Expressed Emotion (EE) to assess parent-child relationship. Half of these parents (n = 21, clinical group) had preschool children with early symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the rest had typically developing children. Early symptoms of ADHD were identified with the Werry-Weiss Peters Rating Scale. The linguistic component of the PFMSS was analysed with keyword and linguistic pattern identification. The results of these two complementary analyses (i.e., EE and linguistic analysis) provided relevant recommendations that may improve the efficacy of psychological treatment for ADHD such as parenting interventions. We discuss the practical implications of these findings.

In the light of the Theory of Variation and Change and Generative Phonology, in this study, aims to investigate the performance of a segment /R/ in the community of Porto da Rua (in the northern coast of Alagoas). The phonetic environment in which this realization occurs was determined, as well as the influence of extralinguistic factors analysed. The corpus for this research consisted of 48 informants among men and women born in the community. The categorization of data and statistical analysis were done using the package VARBRUL. Data were coded according to linguistic and social groups of factors (GF). The results indicated that the variant under study may be undergoing a process of linguistic change, since those responsible for spreading the informants are not in school and age over 50 years. Data collection was done through recordings with spontaneous narratives. A pesquisa ora apresentada teve como objetivo identificar e compreender as lacunas existentes entre os Parâmetros Curriculares nacionais e as variáveis do ensino-aprendizagem no 9º ano do ensino fundamental e no ensino médio das escolas públicas estaduais do município de Miranda, Mato grosso do Sul. Desde a elaboração do projeto, partiu-se da hipótese de uma incoerência verificada na relação entre os métodos de ensino de língua materna perpetuados pelas práticas pedagógicas nas escolas e a proposta estabelecida nos Parâmetros. O interesse pela autoria de textos escritos é tão antigo quanto a própria escrita. Desde que o homem passou a registrar a sua língua dessa forma, podem ser muitas as circunstâncias em que emerge a pergunta Quem escreveu este texto?. Ela pode surgir porque os textos são anônimos, assinados por pseudônimos ou porque há uma disputa com relação a sua autoria. Mais recentemente, saber quem escreveu um determinado texto ou conjunto de textos tem ajudado a solucionar crimes ou dirimir contendas judiciais. Nesses contextos, entra em cena o linguista forense, cujo trabalho pode elucidar tais casos uma vez que sua análise é capaz de depreender estilos linguísticos que se relacionam tanto a um grupo social (elaboração de perfis sociolinguísticos) quanto a um indivíduo (atribuição de autoria). If you have ever gotten lost in scribbles, rows, columns and highlighting while trying to use a spreadsheet or pen and paper for coding linguistic data, then a relational database is a tool for you. It offers a clean and manageable way to code all of your data consistently and accurately. This paper is not meant to be a complete manual for using a database or all of the complexities of the Structured Query Language (SQL) which powers its searching and counting functions. Rather, this paper serves as a primer or how-to for using a relational database for linguistic analysis. Much of the information around the internet related to databases was not straightforwardly translatable to a linguist's needs, in particular the SQL code needed for counting hierarchical data (multiple different attributes with multiple different values). We used computational linguistic and content analyses to explore the concept of project ownership for undergraduate research. We used linguistic analysis of student interview data to develop a quantitative methodology for assessing project ownership and applied this method to measure degrees of project ownership expressed by students in relation to different types of educational research experiences. The results of the study suggest that the design of a research experience significantly influences the degree of project ownership expressed by students when they describe those experiences. The analysis identified both positive and negative aspects of project ownership and provided a working definition for how a student experiences his or her research opportunity. These elements suggest several features that could be incorporated into an undergraduate research experience to foster a student's sense of project ownership.

The production of verbal operants not previously taught is an important aspect of language productivity. For Skinner, new mands, tacts, and autoclitics result from the recombination of verbal operants. The relation between these mands, tacts, and autoclitics is what linguists call analogy, a grammatical pattern that serves as a foundation on which a speaker might emit new linguistic forms. Analogy appears in linguistics as a regularity principle that characterizes language and has been related to how languages change and also to creativity. The approaches of neogrammarians like Hermann Paul, as well as those of Jespersen and Bloomfield, appear to have influenced Skinner's understanding of verbal creativity. Generalization and stimulus equivalence are behavioral processes related to the generative grammatical behavior described in the analogy model. Linguistic forms and grammatical patterns described in analogy are part of the contingencies of reinforcement that produce generalization and stimulus equivalence. The analysis of verbal behavior needs linguistic analyses of the constituents of linguistic forms and their combination patterns.

In this paper we aim to examine how the linguistic analysis directives proposed by the National Curricular Parameters to the Portuguese Language Teaching are incorporated by Portuguese textbooks. The data shows that although the teacher's handbook suggests the development of the reflection literacy, some linguistic analysis exercises in the student's textbook still point to the development of the recognition literacy.

The logic-based machine-understandable framework of the Semantic Web often challenges naive users when they try to query ontology-based knowledge bases. Existing research efforts have approached this problem by introducing Natural Language (NL) interfaces to ontologies. These NL interfaces have the ability to construct SPARQL queries based on NL user queries. However, most efforts were restricted to queries expressed in English, and they often benefited from the advancement of English NLP tools. However, little research has been done to support querying the Arabic content on the Semantic Web by using NL queries. This paper presents a domain-independent approach to translate Arabic NL queries to SPARQL by leveraging linguistic analysis. Based on a special consideration on Noun Phrases (NPs), our approach uses a language parser to extract NPs and the relations from Arabic parse trees and match them to the underlying ontology. It then utilizes knowledge in the ontology to group NPs into triple-based representations. A SPARQL query is finally generated by extracting targets and modifiers, and interpreting them into SPARQL. The interpretation of advanced semantic features including negation, conjunctive and disjunctive modifiers is also supported. La posible influencia de la doctrina órfica en el pensamiento de Heráclito ha sido objeto de un fuerte debate entre los especialistas. Así, a la teoría de que toda la filosofia de Heráclito estaba inspirada en el orfismo se contrapuso la opinión de que no existía ninguna conexión. Sin embargo, lo cierto es que algunos testimonios de la Antigüedad tardia abonaron el camino de quienes quisieron ver alguna relación. De la lectura de estas fuentes se constatan diversos puntos de coincidencia: de un lado, el carácter enigmático de sus afirmaciones. De otro, el hecho de que Heráclito sugiriese en varios fragmentos la teoría de la reencarnación del alma o definiese un principio divino con rasgos monoteistas propios de la doctrina orfia. No obstante, la discusión entre las opiniones contrarias había alcanzado un punto que parecía irresoluble hasta que la reciente publicación de diversos documentos arqueológicos y papirológicos ha venido a reforzar notablemente la teoría de la conexión entre el orfismo y el filósofo de Éfeso. This paper attempts to shed light on sexism in Egyptian Internet jokes. It examines how language, as an institution largely controlled by men, is manipulated and used to disparage women in this discursive mode of humor. Through running a qualitative and quantitative analysis of 284 sexist internet jokes, the study addressed three points; namely, the most frequently targeted category of women in sexist jokes; the most salient physical and personal attributes and finally the way sexist jokes is used to promote violence against women. The analysis has shown that the "wife" is the category most ridiculed. The data also revealed that in spite of the freedom in anonymity that the internet provides, personal attributes far outnumber the physical features. The jokes conformed to the conservative nature of the society as derision of physical features was done through the use of general terms. The analysis has shown that ‘hatefulness’ was the most highly criticised personal attribute, with "stupidity" coming second. It was also shown that under the guise of benign amusement, the effect of these jokes go beyond tolerating gender inequality to actually promoting physical violence against women. This article addresses the conceptions of teaching and learning linguistic aspects present in activities of linguistic analysis elaborated by undergraduate students of a course in Languages (Portuguese and English) of a public university in the south of the Brazil. The rubrics herein analyzed are composed by 8 (eight) sets of activities of linguistic analysis, which were created by the students for the discipline of Supervised Practice on Portuguese Language Teaching. Our theoretical and methodological framework is based on the theoretical studies that initiated the reflection on linguistic analysis and language teaching in Brazil during the 80s (GERALDI, 1984, 1997; FRANCHI, 1991), as well as on recent researches in the area (MENDONÇA, 2006; REINALDO; BEZERRA, 2013). On the one hand, the analysis showed a conception of linguistic analysis that emphasizes language in use and a more reflective perspective of language.  There are few linguistic studies of the Waimiri Atroari language and all are relatively recent: Hill and Hill (1985), Lacerda (1991), Bruno (1995, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, and 2009). Yet, the point of this paper is that linguistic analysis is crucial for language revitalization. To support this position, I discuss the experience of the Waimiri Atroari with formal education and orthography, in particular as it relates to syllable structure. I describe how syllable structure works in Waimiri Atroari and I discuss the failings of orthographies that do not take into account the language structure.
