A partir das letras de fado acerca da cidade de Lisboa cuja colheita, inédita, foi parte inicial desta investigação o presente trabalho procura mostrar de que modo a cidade de Lisboa é vista e representada por seus habitantes. A análise de um corpus de 183 canções que cantam a cidade enquanto tal (e não elementos dela: o castelo, o Tejo, bairros, telhados, personagens), revelam que Lisboa é quase sempre uma mulher. Em seguida, o presente estudo dedica-se a interpretar, utilizando como método o círculo filológico da estilística de Leo Spitzer, o fenômeno da personificação de Lisboa no fado, primeiro por uma perspectiva diacrônica e depois sincronicamente. Por último, dedica-se a revelar que tipo de mulher é Lisboa, e sua relação com as vendedoras ambulantes (varinas, saloias, minhotas) e meretrizes que historicamente frequentavam as ruas da cidade e hoje frequentam apenas o imaginário popular. Este trabalho analisa a obra O Nativo de C?ncer, do escritor paraense Ruy Barata, publicado como fragmento em 1960. Lyα emitter (LAE) surveys have successfully used the excess in a narrowband filter compared to a nearby broadband image to find candidates. However, the odd spectral energy distribution (SED) of LAEs combined with the instrumental profile has important effects on the properties of the candidate samples extracted from these surveys. We investigate the effect of the bandpass width and the transmission profile of the narrowband filters used for extracting LAE candidates at redshifts z sime 6.5 through Monte Carlo simulations, and we present pilot observations to test the performance of tunable filters to find LAEs and other emission-line candidates. We compare the samples obtained using a narrow ideal rectangular filter, the Subaru NB921 narrowband filter, and sweeping across a wavelength range using the ultra-narrow-band tunable filters of the instrument OSIRIS, installed at the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias. We use this instrument for extracting LAE candidates from a small set of real observations. Broadband data from the Subaru, Hubble Space Telescope, and Spitzer databases were used for fitting SEDs to calculate photometric redshifts and to identify interlopers. We present Spitzer Space Telescope photometry of six short-period polars, EF Eri, V347 Pav, VV Pup, V834 Cen, GG Leo, and MR Ser. We have combined the Spitzer Infrared Array Camera (3.6 -8.0 microns) data with the 2MASS J, H, K_s photometry to construct the spectral energy distributions of these systems from the near- to mid-IR (1.235 - 8 microns). We find that five out of the six polars have flux densities in the mid-IR that are substantially in excess of the values expected from the stellar components alone. We have modeled the observed SEDs with a combination of contributions from the white dwarf, secondary star, and either cyclotron emission or a cool, circumbinary dust disk to fill in the long-wavelength excess. We find that a circumbinary dust disk is the most likely cause of the 8 micron excess in all cases, but we have been unable to rule out the specific (but unlikely) case of completely optically thin cyclotron emission as the source of the observed 8 micron flux density. While both model components can generate enough flux at 8 microns, neither dust nor cyclotron emission alone can match the excess above the stellar components at all wavelengths. We present the first observations of magnetic cataclysmic variables with the Spitzer Space Telescope. We used the Infrared Array Camera to obtain photometry of the polars EF Eri, GG Leo, V347 Pav, and RX J0154.0-5947 at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 $\mu$m. In all of our targets, we detect excess mid-infrared emission over that expected from the component stars alone. We explore the origin of this IR excess by examining bremsstrahlung, cyclotron emission, circumbinary dust, and L/T brown dwarf secondary stars. Bremsstrahlung and cyclotron emission appear unlikely to be significant contributors to the observed fluxes. At present, the most likely candidate for the excess emission is dust that is probably located in a circumbinary disk with an inner temperature near 800 K. However, a simple dust disk plus any reasonable low mass or brown dwarf-like secondary star is unable to fully explain the observed flux densities in the 3--8 $\mu$m region.; Comment: Accepted to ApJ Letters

We present a search for infrared dust emission associated with the Leo cloud, a large intergalactic cloud in the M96 group. Mid-infrared and far-infrared images were obtained with IRAC and MIPS on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Our analysis of these maps is done at each wavelength relative to the HI spatial distribution. We observe a probable detection at 8 microns and a marginal detection at 24 microns associated with the highest HI column densities in the cloud. At 70 and 160 microns, upper limits on the dust emission are deduced. The level of the detection is low so that the possibility of a fortuitous cirrus clump or of an overdensity of extragalactic sources along the line of sight can not be excluded. If this detection is confirmed, the quantities of dust inferred imply a dust to gas ratio in the intergalactic cloud up to a few times solar but no less than 1/20 solar. A confirmed detection would therefore exclude the possibility that the intergalactic cloud has a primordial origin. We present a large set of theoretical isochrones, whose distinctive features mostly reside on the greatly improved treatment of the thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) phase. Essentially, we have coupled the TP-AGB tracks described in Paper I, at their stages of pre-flash quiescent H-shell burning, with the evolutionary tracks for the previous evolutionary phases from Girardi et al. (2000). Theoretical isochrones for any intermediate value of age and metallicity are then derived by interpolation in the grids. We take care that the isochrones keep, to a good level of detail, the several peculiarities present in these TP-AGB tracks. Theoretical isochrones are then converted to about 20 different photometric systems -- including traditional ground-based systems, and those of recent major wide-field surveys such as SDSS, OGLE, DENIS, 2MASS, UKIDSS, etc., -- by means of synthetic photometry applied to an updated library of stellar spectra, suitably extended to include C-type stars. Finally, we correct the predicted photometry by the effect of circumstellar dust during the mass-losing stages of the AGB evolution, which allows us to improve the results for the optical-to-infrared systems, and to simulate mid- and far-IR systems such as those of Spitzer and AKARI. We present the third and final part of a census of Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars in Local Group dwarf irregular galaxies. Papers I and II presented the results for WLM and IC 1613. Included here are Phoenix, LGS 3, DDO 210, Leo A, Pegasus dIrr, and Sextans A. Spitzer photometry at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8 are presented, along with a more thorough treatment of background galaxy contamination than was presented in papers I and II. We find that at least a small population of completely optically obscured AGB stars exists in each galaxy, regardless of the galaxy's metallicity, but that higher-metallicity galaxies tend to harbor more stars with slight IR excesses. The optical incompleteness increases for the redder AGB stars, in line with the expectation that some AGB stars are not detected in the optical due to large amounts of extinction associated with in situ dust production. Overall, there is an underrepresentation of 30% - 40% in the optical AGB within the 1 sigma errors for all of the galaxies in our sample. This undetected population is large enough to affect star formation histories derived from optical color-magnitude diagrams. As measured from the [3.6] - [4.5] color excesses, we find average stellar mass-loss rates ranging from 3.1E-7 - 6.6E-6 solar masses per year...

We combine nulling interferometry at 10 {\mu}m using the MMT and Keck Telescopes with spectroscopy, imaging, and photometry from 3 to 100 {\mu}m using Spitzer to study the debris disk around {\beta} Leo over a broad range of spatial scales, corresponding to radii of 0.1 to ~100 AU. We have also measured the close binary star o Leo with both Keck and MMT interferometers to verify our procedures with these instruments. The {\beta} Leo debris system has a complex structure: 1.) relatively little material within 1 AU; 2.) an inner component with a color temperature of ~600 K, fitted by a dusty ring from about 2 to 3 AU; and 3.) a second component with a color temperature of ~120 K fitted by a broad dusty emission zone extending from about ~5 AU to ~55 AU. (Abridged) The HST Frontier Fields project started at the end of 2013 with the aim of providing extremely deep images of 6 massive galaxy clusters. One of the main goals of this program is to push several telescopes to their limits in order to provide the best current view of the earliest stages of the Universe. We present a detailed analysis of $z$$\sim$8 objects behind the HFFs lensing cluster, MACS0416-2403, combining 0.3-1.6 $\mu$m imaging from HST, ground-based $K_s$ imaging from VLT HAWK-I, and 3.6 $\mu$m and 4.5 $\mu$m Spitzer Space Telescope. We apply the classical Lyman Break technique, combining non-detection criteria and color-selection. In order to avoid contamination by mid-$z$ interlopers, we require a strong break between optical and near infrared data. The luminosity function at $z$$\sim$8 is computed using a MC method taking advantage of the SED-fitting results. A piece of cautionary information is gleaned from new deep optical photometry of a previously identified $z$$\sim$8 galaxy in this cluster, which is now firmly detected as a mid-$z$ interloper with a strong $\approx1.5$ mag Balmer break (between F606W and F125W). Using the SED of this interloper, we estimate the contamination rate of our MACS0416$-$2403 sample...

We present Spitzer Space Telescope IRAC photometry of the magnetic cataclysmic variables EF Eri, MR Ser, VV Pup, V834 Cen, GG Leo and V347 Pav. When we combine our results with the 2MASS data, we find that at least five of the polars have flux densities in the mid-IR in excess of the emission expected from the stellar components alone. We are unable to model this mid-IR excess with cyclotron emission, but we can recreate the observed spectral energy distributions with the inclusion of a simple circumbinary dust disk model. Importantly, we find that the masses of our modelled disks are approximately 12 orders of magnitude lower than required to significantly affect CV evolution. The accretion disk-less polars are ideal places to search for these disks, since the luminous accretion disk in most CVs would drown out the faint IR signature of the cooler, dimmer circumbinary disks.

O presente artigo propõe uma retomada de elementos do método de abordagem do texto literário utilizado pela estilística como instrumento de aproximação da poesia ao leitor em formação. Partiu-se, sobretudo, das formulações e análises empreendidas pelo mais destacado crítico da estilística, o vienense Leo Spitzer (1942, 2002). Aponta-se a contribuição de críticos brasileiro que lançaram mão desta perspectiva metodológica e discute-se os limites que qualquer método, sobretudo quando utilizado de modo mecânico. Reflete-se também sobre a necessidade de associar o método a uma perspectiva mais dialógica de ensino de literatura. Ao final, a partir de um poema de Mario Quintana, mostra-se como proceder em sala de aula visando estimular a descoberta de sentidos do poema pelo leitor através de uma leitura compartilhada.; This article proposes a recovery of elements from the literary text method used in stylistics as an instrument to teach poetry to the reader in training. Neste trabalho, homenagem ao nonagésimo aniversário da professora Ângela Vaz Leão, empreendemos uma leitura estilística de um soneto da Fênix Renascida, principal cancioneiro da poesia seiscentista portuguesa. A partir da metodologia do círculo filológico, proposta por Leo Spitzer, pela qual se realiza uma contínua passagem das partes ao todo e do todo às partes do texto, procedemos a uma exaustiva análise dos elementos linguísticos do poema, procurando ressaltar seus aspectos conceituais, imaginativos e afetivos, segundo a doutrina de Dámaso Alonso, não, contudo, para ter acesso à personalidade ou delinear o psiquismo do autor, senão para, em consonância mais com as ideias de Karl Vossler, agregar à interpretação elementos das mentalidades e do contexto histórico-cultural do poema. Si bien Historia y Memoria, en tanto representación del pasado, quedaron ubicadas en ámbitos excluyentes desde la Ilustración, las nuevas corrientes historiográficas de las últimas décadas del siglo XX trazaron nuevos nexos entre ambas. Este artículo se aproxima a un novedoso modelo de investigación que, sustentado en una rigurosa investigación de archivo y biblio-hemerográfica, se entreteje no sólo con historia oral, memorias escritas, cartas, fotografías, representaciones artísticas y artículos de periódicos, etcétera, sino con la experiencia vivida del propio investigador, quien destaca el valor cognitivo de la subjetividad. El artículo gira en torno a la tensión contrapuntística que crea el delirio frente a la razón en el Quijote. Partimos de la idea (que compartimos con María Zambrano) de que el delirio es una forma de inteligencia diferente a la inteligencia racional, y que es también una de las diferentes perspectivas (de acuerdo con Leo Spitzer) que conforman el mundo. Es el espacio de la metáfora, de la invención, de la alucinación, es el mundo de don Quijote. Nuestro caballero andante intentará verter su mundo sobre la realidad racional y allí se generará el enfrentamiento entre el delirio y la razón, en términos contrapuntísticos, la disonancia que se resuelve en consonancia casi siempre cuando es derrotado el delirio; en ese momento se acaba el tiempo sin tiempo de la aventura, y don Quijote vuelve al tiempo cronológico y distingue la realidad racional, pero no podrá aceptarla, a menos que esté encantada. Este tema es analizado a la luz de diversas obras, entre ellas: La ambigüedad en el Quijote de Manuel Durán; "Don Quijote" de Foucault; Meditaciones del Quijote, de Ortega y Gasset; "Ambigüedad de la novela", de Octavio Paz; "Perspectivismo lingüístico en El Quijote", de Leo Spitzer, etc.
