The work aims to discuss different perspectives about learning, in order to examine how they can be reconciled. This objective is justified on learning’s adaptive and cultural role. Thus, we examine some proposals of mind and culture co-evolution, that provide a new theoretical basis for the explanation of learning, and also to reconcile different learning processes, organized in a implicit-explicit continuum.; Ce travail a pour but de réfléchir et d’intégrer diverses perspectives théoriques de l’apprentissage, qui sont apparemment contradictoires entre elles.

The central aim of the present research is to contribute to the clarification of the conditions under which teams can be successful. To attain our goal, the direct and interactive effects of diversity and of the team’s cultural orientation towards learning on team outcomes (team performance, team members’ satisfaction, team members’ quality of life) were analysed in a study with a non-experimental design. Seventy-three workgroups from different industrial and services companies, that perform complex and non-routine tasks, were surveyed. Multiple regression analyses were conducted and results revealed that the team orientation towards learning improves team members’ satisfaction and team members’ quality of life. Diversity presented, as well, a positive impact on team member satisfaction and on team members’ quality of life, but the effect was just marginally significant. No interactive effects were identified. This study suggests that managers who want to create successful teams may be advised to enhance the levels of the team orientation towards learning, creating conditions in the team to promote and support the acquisition of knowledge. The positive impact of a learning culture on organizational effectiveness is already well established in the literature. However...

This paper reports upon a Portuguese pedagogical model, where children engage with the teacher in planning and assessment during routine activities like “Council Meetings”, “Communication Time”, and using specific tools such as an “Activities Chart” and a “Diary”. The paper questions how these processes generate a community of practice in ´learning to learn´ with children aged 3 to 6. The study developed a theoretical framework using socio-cultural theory where action is mediated through the use of artefacts/tools and the communities’ social structures: roles, rules, division of labour and access to resources (Lave and Wenger 1991). This literature was complemented by a study of the children’s “learning to learn” which provided a focus on specific learning objects (meta-learning and learning dispositions such as learning orientation). Two pre-school classrooms were studied over one year using observations, video recordings, interviews with teachers and children, and analysis of two piloting tools: the “Diary” and the “Activity Chart”. Both classrooms provided “communities of learning” where children were encouraged to self-regulate their learning and engage in collaborative activities, transforming their leading activity from playing with others to learning with others (Siraj-Blatchford 2007). Despite these general results...

The purpose of this learning strategy is to develop a structured process for generating, sharing, capturing, and disseminating knowledge about what works in scaling up and sustaining handwashing programs. The authors are undertaking this learning process to enable policy-makers to make evidence-based decisions and to enable the implementation of large-scale programs. Key outcomes of the learning will be knowledge products that can be used both for advocacy and for putting into action cost-effective approaches and tools to ease replication. The learning in this project will benefit not only current stakeholders but also future stakeholders interested in and committed to promoting effective handwashing behavior-change programs. The remainder of this strategy paper is divided into five sections: project background; learning goals and principles; learning culture, tools, and platforms; learning processes; and organizational aspects of learning.

The great challenge for European convergence in higher education lies in setting up more flexible structures and a new approach to learning. The concept of a new university is based on a constructivist conception of learning, in which the student plays a key role in creating meaning, and the teacher is a mediator between students and knowledge. This study analyzed the evolution and the learning processes of undergraduate students in the Faculty of Education at the University of Granada, Spain. More specifically, we examined courses introduced under the LRU (University Reform Law) system and under the ECTS system, as well as current degree courses. Also, we identified which aspects ought to be changed or enhanced in order to accomplish the objectives of the new model, not only at a theoretical and general level, but also in practice; and developed teaching and learning methodology models.; El gran desafío de la convergencia Europea en Educación Superior está en conseguir estructuras más flexibles y un nuevo enfoque basado en el aprendizaje.

peer-reviewed; This study arose in response to a perceived need for additional teacher support for assessment in physical education and the limited focus in physical education pedagogy literature on the impact of Assessment for Learning (AfL), in particular the impact of formative assessment on student learning. The study involved the refinement and evaluation of a post-primary physical education planning framework with assessment instruments for use by teachers. A number of teachers were engaged in the development of assessment and planning materials, the trialling of these in school settings and their subsequent refinement based on the feedback received from the teaching and learning setting. The study was contingent on teachers cultivating a learning culture within their class. Students’ and teachers’ experiences of AfL are reported before highlighting some of the challenges that remain in investigating formative assessment.; accepted; peer-reviewed

The purpose of my research is to describe and analyze the facets of the learning culture in one non-profit organization. Based on my reading, I define a learning culture as: the observable and unobservable processes, structures, norms, and communication patterns that support ongoing, work-related, learning for employees. I relied on Schein’s (1985, 1992, 2004) levels of culture theory to guide my study. Schein posits that culture must be explored at three levels: “artifacts” (observable symbols and structures), “espoused beliefs and values” (the articulated ideologies of the organization), and “underlying assumptions” (the unconscious beliefs that are shared amongst members of a group). Accordingly, I selected a three-phase qualitative approach to provide a rich description of one organization’s learning culture. Using semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and document analysis, I investigated the firm’s learning culture. I targeted two groups: organizational representatives and employees. I further divided my employee group into two subgroups: administrators (management) and frontline employees (those who provide direct care for clients), in order to glean a broad perspective of the learning culture and how different groups perceive that culture. My research allowed me to describe the organization’s culture of learning. I uncovered a mismatch...

In the current global economy, the capacity to build knowledge is a reliable source of success because many different corporations favor its creation, trying to incorporate new technologies and to improve processes. Virtual corporate communities are Web based learning environments that offer resources for construction of knowledge in companies. This paper presents a solution for the qualification of networked corporate communities, considering aspects such as: the importance of learning in the organizations and of implementation of a learning culture; the lack of alternatives for the institutions to solve their problems related to professional education; the use of information and communication technologies for the construction of organizational knowledge.

Background A healthy workplace culture enables nurses to experience valuable learning in the workplace. Learning in the workplace is valuable as it can enable the provision of evidence based and continuously improving safe patient care, which is central to achieving good patient outcomes. Therefore, nurses need to learn within a workplace that supports the implementation of evidence based, professional practice and enables the best patient outcomes; the influence of workplace culture may play a role in this. Objectives To critically appraise and synthesize the best available qualitative evidence to understand both the nurse’s learning experiences within the workplace, and the factors within the workplace culture that influence those learning experiences. Inclusion criteria Participants Registered and enrolled nurses, regulated by a nursing and midwifery authority and/or recognised health practitioner regulation agency (or its international equivalent). Phenomena of interest The nurse’s learning experience, either within an acute health care workplace, or within a workplace related learning environment and the influence of workplace culture on the nurse’s learning experience (within the workplace, or workplace related learning environment). Context This review considered studies that included nurses working in an acute health care organization within a Western culture. Studies This review considered studies that focused on qualitative evidence and included phenomenological...

It is inevitable that healthcare workers throughout their careers will witness actual or potential threats to patient safety in the course of their work. Some of these threats will result in serious harm occurring to others, whilst at other times such threats will result in minimal harm, or a ‘near miss’ where harm is avoided at the last minute. Despite organizations encouraging employees to ‘speak up’ about such threats, healthcare systems globally struggle to engage their staff to do so. Even when staff do raise concerns they are often ignored by those with a responsibility to listen and act. Learning how to create the conditions where employees continuously raise and respond to concerns is essential in creating a continuous and responsive learning culture that cherishes keeping patients and employees safe. Workplace culture is a real barrier to the creation of such a learning system but examples in healthcare exist from which we can learn.

In the contemporary context of high competitiveness between organizations, organizational learning culture and knowledge management (KM) have been considered key concepts in both academic and managerial settings. This study aims to provide empirical support for the relationship between organizational learning culture and knowledge management, specifically concerning the prediction of learning culture on KM processes. Data collection was carried out through questionnaires in 50 Portuguese manufacturing firms. Data was analyzed at the organizational level using standard multiple regressions. The results showed a significant and positive relationship between learning culture and KM practices. Concerning the two dimensions of learning culture, internal integration was the main predictor for KM formal practices, KM informal practices and strategic management of knowledge, whereas the external adaptation dimension was shown to predict only the strategic management of knowledge. The present study contributes to theoretical and empirical findings concerning the relationship between learning culture and knowledge management processes.

The purpose of this study was to contribute to the clarification of the conditions under which teams can be successful. To attain this goal, the direct and interactive effects of diversity and of the team's cultural orientation towards learning on team outcomes (team performance, team members' satisfaction) were analyzed. Data were obtained from a survey among 73 teams from different industrial and service companies, which perform complex and non-routine tasks. In order to test the hypotheses, multilevel analysis and hierarchical regression analysis were conducted. The results show a significant (although marginal) effect of diversity on members' satisfaction with the team. The team orientation towards learning presented positive effects on both team performance and members' satisfaction with the team. No interactive effects were identified. Although the positive impact of a learning culture on organizational effectiveness has already been studied and is well established in the literature, this is one of the first studies that provides empirical evidence of the impact of this kind of culture at the team level. At an intervention level, this study points to managers who want to create successful teams that they may be advised to enhance the levels of the team orientation towards learning...
