Neste estudo procurou-se estabelecer uma relação entre as práticas Lean e Green, e dos impactos que a sua aplicação conjunta pode ter no desempenho das empresas. Para atingir esse objectivo decidiu-se recorrer à metodologia de mapeamento de conceitos. A SRAMPORT foi a empresa a elegida para o caso de estudo, onde onze participantes foram seleccionados para participar no projecto e colaborar na elaboração dos mapas conceituais. O mapa conceito é constituído por seis passos, e estes foram seguidos ao longo do projecto. Os resultados obtidos são analisados e discutidos. A preocupação mundial com a sustentabilidade tem levado as organizações a investigar, cada vez mais, alternativas para melhorar a sua desempenho ambiental e, assim, garantir o desenvolvimento dos seus negócios de forma sustentável. Com o passar dos anos, a literatura tem apresentado diferentes estratégias para apoiar a evolução de empresas ambientalmente conscientes, embora muito pouco tenha se explorado com relação ao potencial para promover a sustentabilidade inerente às práticas de manufatura já existentes. The aim of this paper is to verify whether the practices of lean manufacturing are positively associated with the adoption of environmental management practices in Brazilian companies in the automotive sector to test the hypothesis that by being lean the business tends to become green. To this purpose, a framework associating these concepts with the research hypothesis was proposed. The data collected from 75 companies were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling. The main results show that lean manufacturing (LM) is positively associated with environmental management (EM), but the explanation power of LM over EM is considered weak/moderate. In fact, being lean also means being green, but other organizational variables not considered in this study may influence the greening of organizations.

Lean Production has proved itself a worthwhile production strategy in many distinct industries across all regions of the planet by achieving higher levels of production efficiency. Several authors identified that Lean inadvertently has had significant environmental gains. Such achievements are considered of special relevance in a global and highly competitive economy which is progressively both tied-up and driven by an environmental agenda. The main goal of the present study is to enlighten the contribution of Lean for achieving a better environmental performance of production systems and identify this as an emergent business model for supporting eco-efficiency.

When this relationship is established, normally, it is coined as Lean-Green. O projecto conhecido pelo acrónimo LARGeSCM, sinónimo de Lean, Agile, Resilient and Green Supply Chain Management, pretende estabelecer as características de uma cadeia de asbastecimento que faça cruzar atributos associados a novos paradigmas da organização e gestão empresarial que, em muitos casos, revelam objectivos um pouco contraditórios. Efectivamente, os conceitos Lean (magro) Agile (ágil) Resilient (resiliente) e Green (verde) nem sempre se apresentam de uma forma conciliável e integrável numa cadeia de abastecimento, gerando efeitos divergentes enquanto, noutros casos, se esperam sinergias. Innovative strategies such as Lean, Agile, Resilient and Green emerged as a response, requiring high levels of cooperation and of great complexity. However, the strategic alignment of operations with partners in supply chains is affected by lack of interoperability. The present work provides a framework to enhance SC competitiveness and performance by assessing interoperable SCM Practices applied in automotive industry. Through a pragmatic interoperability approach, this methodology describes in detail the form of application using analytical hierarchical process (AHP) and Fuzzy sets as support decision making models, ensuring a systematic approach to the analysis of interoperability with appropriate criteria for assessment of situations that require high levels of collaboration between partners. Through a case study in a Portuguese automaker, it was possible to test the methodology and analyse which areas lack interoperability in the implementation of SCM practices.

From the Information Technology (IT) perspective, among all the multi-decisional techniques supporting a logistics network, simulation appears as an essential tool that allow the quantitative evaluation of benefits and issues deriving from a co-operative environment. It is important to recognize new opportunities for organization and its supply chain. In the last few years the approach to lean, agile, resilient and green supply chain paradigms has been addressed in the scientific literature. Research in this field shows that the integration of these concepts revealed some contradictions among so many paradigms. This thesis is mainly focused on the lean and green approaches. Thirteen different management frameworks, embodied in awards, standards and tools were studied to understand if they could contribute for the modelling process of a lean and green approach. The study reveals a number of categories that are common in most management frameworks, providing adequate conditions for a lean and green supply chain transformation. This work aims to identify and rank a set of Lean and Green practices and supply chain performance measures on which managers should focus to achieve competitiveness and improve the performance of automotive supply chains. The identification of the contextual relationships among the suggested practices and measures, was performed through literature review. Their ranking was done by interviews with professionals from the automotive industry and academics with wide knowledge on the subject. The methodology of interpretive structural modelling (ISM) is a useful methodology to identify inter relationships among Lean and Green practices and supply chain performance measures and to support the evaluation of automotive supply chain performance. Using the ISM methodology, the variables under study were clustered according to their driving power and dependence power. The ISM methodology was proposed to be used in this work. The model intends to provide a better understanding of the variables that have more influence (driving variables), the others and those which are most influenced (dependent variables) by others. The information provided by this model is strategic for managers who can use it to identify which variables they should focus on in order to have competitive supply chains.

The demand for costs and time reductions in companies’ processes, in order to increase efficiency, leads companies to seek innovative management paradigms to support their needs for growth and continuous improvement. The Lean paradigm has great relevance in companies’ need for waste reduction, particularly in manufacturing companies. On the other hand the demand of companies for waste reduction has gained a new dimension not only at the material level, but also at the environmental level with the introduction of the Green paradigm. As such, manufacturing companies have been adopting practices that reduce the impact of their activities on the environment. Although nowadays many manufacturing companies already implement waste reduction practices related to Lean and Green paradigms, many of them are unable to understand specifically if their efforts are enough for the application of these practices to be successful or even if their actual performance in implementing Lean or Green practices reflects the self-assessment that they have of themselves. Thus, besides the study of the development of Lean and Green paradigms in recent years, the present dissertation has the important objective of the construction of two indexes (the Lean Index and the Green Index) enabling the measurement of the performance of Portuguese manufacturing companies relating the implementation of Lean and Green practices. The data used to create the Lean and Green indexes where obtained from the implementation of the European Manufacturing Survey 2012 in Portugal. The survey questions related to the implementation of Lean and Green practices are used as variables in the development of the model for the two indexes. For the construction of representative expressions of Lean Index and Green Index it was applied the Factorial Analysis for assigning the variables weights and aggregation.

O objetivo deste artigo é verificar se as práticas de manufatura enxuta estão se relacionando positivamente com a adoção de práticas de gestão ambiental em empresas brasileiras do setor automotivo, com a finalidade de testar uma hipótese largamente argumentada na literatura de que ao ser "lean", uma empresa tende também a ser "green". Para tanto, foi sugerido um framework relacionando esses conceitos, com a proposição de uma hipótese de pesquisa. Os dados, coletados em 75 empresas, foram analisados por meio de Modelagem de Equações Estruturais. Os principais resultados indicam que a manufatura enxuta (LM) se relaciona positivamente à gestão ambiental (EM), mas o poder de determinação de LM em EM tende a ser considerado entre fraco e moderado. De fato, ser lean é ser também green, mas outras variáveis organizacionais não consideradas neste estudo podem estar influenciando o greening das organizações.

Consumption of green tea may reduce body weight gain. Although many disorders are related to obesity, bone mass is positively correlated with body mass. Therefore, our purpose in this study was to determine the effects of green tea extract (GTE) on bone mass and architecture in rapidly growing lean [C57BL/6 wild type (WT)] and genetically obese, leptin-deficient (ob/ob) male mice. Five-week-old lean and ob/ob mice were assigned to diets containing GTE at 0, 1, or 2% for 6 wk. Femoral and lumbar vertebral bone volume and architecture were evaluated by micro-computed tomography (μCT). Following μCT analysis, femora were ashed to determine bone mineral content and density. Compared with WT mice, ob/ob mice had shorter femora (P < 0.001), lower femoral bone volume (P < 0.001), and lower femoral bone mineral content (P < 0.001), but higher cancellous bone volume in lumbar vertebrae (P < 001). Neither genotype nor treatment affected femoral bone mineral density, indicating normal mineralization. GTE consumption resulted in lower femur length, volume, mineral content, cortical volume, and cortical thickness (P < 0.001), as well as lower cancellous bone volume/tissue volume (P < 0.008) and trabecular thickness (P < 0.004) in lumbar vertebrae. The results indicate that leptin is not essential for the reduced gains in body weight and bone mass due to GTE in growing mice and suggest that consumption of large quantities of green tea may reduce the rate of bone accumulation during growth.

Opposing activities of acetyltransferases and deacetylases help regulate energy balance. Mice heterozygous for the acetyltransferase CREB binding protein (CBP) are lean and insulin-sensitized but how CBP regulates energy homeostasis is unclear. In one model, the main CBP interaction with the glucagon-responsive factor CREB is not limiting for liver gluconeogenesis, whereas a second model posits that Ser436 in the CH1 (TAZ1) domain of CBP is required for insulin and the anti-diabetic drug metformin to inhibit CREB-mediated liver gluconeogenesis. Here we show that conditional knockout of CBP in liver does not decrease fasting blood glucose or gluconeogenic gene expression, consistent with the first model. However, mice where the CBP CH1 domain structure is disrupted by deleting residues 342-393 (ΔCH1) are lean and insulin-sensitized, as are p300ΔCH1 mutants. CBPΔCH1/ΔCH1 mice remain metformin responsive. An intact CH1 domain is thus necessary for normal energy storage, but not for the blood glucose-lowering actions of insulin and metformin.

Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 (GLP-1) has insulin-like effects on myocardial glucose uptake which may contribute to its beneficial effects in the setting of myocardial ischemia. Whether these effects are different in the setting of obesity or type 2 diabetes (T2DM) requires investigation. We examined the cardiometabolic actions of GLP-1 (7–36) in lean and obese/T2DM humans, and in lean and obese Ossabaw swine. GLP-1 significantly augmented myocardial glucose uptake under resting conditions in lean humans, but this effect was impaired in T2DM. This observation was confirmed and extended in swine, where GLP-1 effects to augment myocardial glucose uptake during exercise were seen in lean but not in obese swine. GLP-1 did not increase myocardial oxygen consumption or blood flow in humans or in swine. Impaired myocardial responsiveness to GLP-1 in obesity was not associated with any apparent alterations in myocardial or coronary GLP1-R expression. No evidence for GLP-1 mediated activation of cAMP/PKA or AMPK signaling in lean or obese hearts was observed. GLP-1 treatment augmented p38-MAPK activity in lean, but not obese cardiac tissue. Com o crescente aumento da demanda mundial por alimentos e matrizes energéticas renováveis, o setor sucroalcooleiro brasileiro ganhou grande destaque por se tornar um dos mais competitivos na produção de açúcar e álcool combustível. A produção agrícola nacional tem passado por grandes mudanças ao longo dos anos, principalmente após a revolução verde na década de 70 e o após a propagação dos conceitos de Agricultura de Precisão – AP desenvolvidos nos Estados Unidos a partir dos anos 90. O setor sucroalcooleiro é um dos mais desenvolvidos e utilizam as mais novas tecnologias aplicadas no processo de produção e processamento da cana de açúcar com o propósito de maximizar a produtividade e lucratividade. This thesis is a result of my interest in implementing Lean Six Sigma into Indian packaging companies because the Indian industry is growing at 18-20% annually (Samal, 2010). This growth rate is expected to triple in the next five years. With USA outsourcing to foreign nations this substantial growth, as I envision the USA companies who are seeking India packaging materials will benefit from my original approach for converting the Indian packaging industry using Lean Six Sigma. I have a strong personal and professional desire to improve the manufacturing within India. It is the country in which I grew up and where my family currently lives and works. The main objective of this research is to accomplish several major tasks: 1) Introduce a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt DMAIC methodology to an India packaging company and 2) Show how a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt would implement the DMAIC approach in a small Indian packaging company that plans to do business within the USA boundaries and 3) Utilize this packaging company as a model for other India packaging companies to follow if their plans are to sell quality packaging materials to the USA companies.

This research project is a result of a problem-solving proposal that was submitted to Program Chair Dr. Daniel Goodwin on June 28, 2010. The proposal recommends that RIT’s Packaging Science Program establish a unique Lean Six Sigma Green Belt in Packaging Science Certificate program for undergraduate students. The proposal was developed as a result of receiving input from the RIT Packaging Industrial Advisory Board, from researching packaging job descriptions and from Professor Dr. Duane P. Beck’s extensive Lean Six Sigma experience. Students who are successful in receiving the certificate will be able to demonstrate problem-solving skills in the packaging industry.
