Poderá ser consultado na Biblioteca da FBAUL - Cota: TES 11 (1); It is the aim of the present work to study the published articles in the A Construção Moderna, the first Portuguese magazine, edited from the year 1900 to 1919, dedicated both to architecture and to building in general. In such an important period of time for the Portuguese history and culture, as the turning of the century was, this pioneer experience introduced the ideias, the concepts and the materials that sustained the architectural thought and production in the beginning of the modernism in Portugal. In the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, Portugal was an undeveloped country. With its fragile economy and an almost non-existent industry, no wonder that the urban development and the consequent architectural languages appeared rather late in this country. In a cultural atmosphere still very much influenced by the 19th romanticism, the characters of such trend, were mainly the educated people seduced by the positivist doctrine and by the realistic aesthetics. So the modernism question is introduced in Portugal through two different ways of both artistic and cultural influences: on the one hand the French context...

This dissertation considers an unfamiliar but fundamental aspect of late-medieval art: the role of documentation. Documents played as critical a part in that society as they do in our own. In late-medieval consciousness, the charter loomed as large as the sacred image, and documentation mattered no less than devotion—while the two also had a profound and inextricable connection. Discussion begins with three principal arguments, explained in detail in the first chapter: 1. The materials of documentation are part of the history of art; and accordingly, art-historical methods render an important contribution to diplomatics. 2. Documents are an important subject of representation; and accordingly, works of art are important sources for the cultural reception of documentary practices. 3. Documents are an important model for representation; and, consequently, an understanding of the paradigmatic role of the document suggests an alternative dimension to the interpretation of late-medieval art. The chapters that follow pursue these arguments through the analysis of individual works of art—charters, seals, archival manuscripts, liturgical manuscripts, architecture, and sculpture. These chapters also include a study of one of the great monuments of English gothic art: the Sherborne Missal...

As medieval designers and craftsmen have left us with no textual evidence of their thinking processes, their drawings offer valuable sources through which their approach to design and construction can be investigated. Focusing on the early architectural drawings of the medieval period, this thesis will explore the intersections between Late Gothic and Timurid architectural practices. Both Timurid and Gothic designers were also skilled builders. Their education provided them with a good understanding of the pragmatics of architecture, while affecting the ways in which these individuals combined theory and practice to produce novelties in architectural form and style. Two 15th/16th century scrolls from Timurid Central Asia and the considerable number of Late Gothic drawings provide materials for a comparative analysis of Gothic and medieval Islamic design practices and the use of drawings. Beginning with a discussion of vaults, this thesis will examine the precise methods by which designers applied geometry in drawings to explore complex forms. The emphasis on intricate vaults in both Late Gothic and Timurid architecture attest to the similarities between these traditions, while presenting the opportunity to explore their differences. A consideration of the function of drawings in medieval design practices will lead in the second part of this thesis to a broad assessment of the profession of architecture in medieval Central Asia. The hierarchies within the building trades...

The history of the senses will be looked at in terms of a concept of viewing emerging from the visual, and domination that this viewing holds over the other senses (and sensing in general) in architecture. A change in the hierarchy of the senses becomes evident during the late Gothic period, it is institutionalized in architecture by Durrand and in philosophy and art criticism by Kant. What this separation of viewing from vision (as a sense) and the isolation in Kant of the cognitive faculty from the aesthetic, does is impose a severe mind/body split. It is this dialect that informs the very basis of modernity, science, and architecture within the university. Architecture has the power to deny this mind/body split, and this potential has been realized concurrent to the domination of the visual.

The ancient hospital of Santa Magdalena of Montblanc is one of the most interesing examples of the late Gothic Catalan civil architecture. Placed on the city outskirts, it came out as the result of the union of two older institucions: the hospitals of Sant Bartomeu and Santa Magdalena, both founded in the xiiith century. Its construction was carried out at the end of the xvth and beginning of the xvith century...

This thesis discusses the development of British glass painting laying particular emphasis on the progress of the Gothic Revival in architecture. These years (the most neglected and perhaps the most crucial, in the history of the medium) witnessed a fundamental change in the sources, iconography and techniques or painted glass. An introduction chapter provides a survey of the Post-Reformation history of stained glass up to 1760 - an overview essential both to an understanding of the Anglican Church's hostility to religious imagery and of the late 18th - century revival of interest in the medium. For much of the period in question, the history of glass-painting is closely bound up with the history of canvas-painting: designs for 'picture windows' were provided by celebrated artists and the pictorial models used conformed to the canons of taste expounded by the President of the Royal Academy himself. This thesis charts the gradual breakdown of these academic and painterly traditions under the impact of antiquarianism and developments in medievalist scholarship. The emergence of a new 'gothick' style in Georgian glass-painting was a direct reflection of current perceptions of medieval art. In response to the new taste of archaic subject matter...

The medieval Alcázar (fortress) of Madrid was transformed into the residential palace of the Austriandynasty in Spain from the reign of Charles I through that of Charles II. On Christmas Eve 1734, duringthe reign of the Bourbon king Philip V...
