P>1. The use of indicators to identify areas of conservation importance has been challenged on several grounds, but nonetheless retains appeal as no more parsimonious approach exists. Among the many variants, two indicator strategies stand out: the use of indicator species and the use of metrics of landscape structure. While the first has been thoroughly studied, the same cannot be said about the latter. We aimed to contrast the relative efficacy of species-based and landscape-based indicators by: (i) comparing their ability to reflect changes in community integrity at regional and landscape spatial scales, (ii) assessing their sensitivity to changes in data resolution, and (iii) quantifying the degree to which indicators that are generated in one landscape or at one spatial scale can be transferred to additional landscapes or scales. 2. We used data from more than 7000 bird captures in 65 sites from six 10 000-ha landscapes with different proportions of forest cover in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. Indicator species and landscape-based indicators were tested in terms of how effective they were in reflecting changes in community integrity, defined as deviations in bird community composition from control areas. 3. At the regional scale...

The relation between landscape structure and species distribution is a major question in landscape ecology. Terrestrial mammals are particularly susceptible to the spatial features, such as habitat type and landscape complexity, as well as to resource availability (e.g. shelter and food supply). The main objective of this thesis was to describe and understand the patterns of terrestrial non-volant mammal species richness, distribution and abundance in the heterogeneous landscape of Baixo Vouga Lagunar, north-western Portugal. Thus, small mammals and carnivores were sampled using three different strategies: a capture programme focused on small mammals (Rodentia and Eulipotyphla), and sign surveys and camera trapping for carnivores. In general, wetland habitats, such as reed beds, rushes and marshlands, seemed to favour small mammal fauna, being reed bed the habitat with the highest values of diversity. Furthermore, carnivore richness appeared to be favoured by the length of freshwater lines, and consequently by the associated riparian vegetation. Contrary, exotic forest was negatively related to both small mammal fauna and carnivore richness, and presented the lowest small mammal diversity. Overall, carnivore richness was mainly driven by landscape features...

The subject of this paper aims to contribute for the management of heritage landscapes. Among others, this approach it’s quite important when we intend to establish a priority scale concerning indicators monitoring criteria. The authors want to emphasized and remember the fact that many cultural landscapes present a high heritage value; if everybody agree upon that, they must be submitted to heritage science criteria and good practices goals. It means we care about preservation and conservation policies and evaluation methods. So, this approach obliged us also to perceive the link between the actual cultural landscape and the people history that interact with this specific area. We can put it in an interrogative way: is it possible to reach all cultural landscape values if we don’t know how people have built up each landscape for centuries? Nevertheless, our objective now is just to identify some criteria or parameters that we should take care and account when we are defining the heritage landscape values. This is quite important when we try to intervene in land management to valorise countryside and give a change to rural development.

Time is one of the most important driving forces in Landscape Ecology. Time along with geosystem, biosystem and socialsystem determines landscape heterogeneity which reveals itself in different patterns and functions. Cultural Landscapes are the result of the interactions between man and environment along time. Évora (the pre-roman Ebora), the most important town in Alentejo province (Southern Portugal) is involved by a cultural landscape where not only archeological sites and old built structures (walls, roads, bridges houses, etc.) of several epochs are present, but also old parcel networks and specific agro forestry pastoral systems, the montados, exist. Many of the limits of those parcels are materialized by vegetation galleries playing an important role in what concerns the landscape ecological quality of the area. The work developed is a comparative study of the quality of the Évora cultural landscape between 1958 and 2007. This study is based on the interpretation of vertical aerial photos from 1958 and 2007, and on the use of GIS as a tool for the spatial and temporal analysis. The main goals are: • To understand the contribution of time and human history in landscape structure; • To study the changes from 1958 to 2007 in ancient cadastral systems and landscape ecological structure: focused in montados and ecological corridors • To measure the contribution of ancient cadastral systems to the actual ecological structure

The space of the urban landscape is a palimpsest of stratified and overlapping memories. It is created by its inhabitants, by the moments of their lives and, above all, by their memory. Several authors have focused on the question of the relation between memory and space, referring to its importance in the construction and in the perception of the landscape and, consequently, in its appropriation and living experience. Starting with the discussion of several theoretical models – memory as a process of reconstruction from socially elaborated references (Halbwachs); memory as a modulator of landscapes (Gaspar); memory as a rediscovery process of what we already own (Schama); places of memory as a remainder and as perpetuation (Nora); places of memory as places in situ and in visu (Nys and Mosser) – and the use of practical references, where the collective memory is the concept of the urban space design and construction – namely the World Trade Center Memorial, by Peter Walker – it is the aim of this paper to present the construction of the landscape space as a collective memory of a people, through the contemporary landscape architecture design. With this approach we intend to defend the existence of places of memory, not only as historical places...

Landscape metrics have been widely developed over the last two decades, although the question remains: How does landscape metrics relates with ecological processes? One of the major recent developments in landscape metrics analysis was the third dimension integration. Topography has an extremely important role on ecosystems function and structure, even though the common analysis in landscape ecology only conceives planimetric surface which leads to some erroneous results, particularly in mountain areas. The analytical process tested patch, class and landscape metrics behavior in 11 sample areas of 100 sqkm each in several topographical conditions of Central Alentejo. It is presented the significance analysis of the results achieved in planimetric and 3D environments.

A new approach to interpreting the landscape is examined by accepting its complexity through inductive reasoning. While attempting to identify the essence of the landscape in the city and municipality of Óbidos, Portugal, several recommendations of Venturi (2004) have been adapted as a framework for understanding this landscape. These will then guide the process of landscape transformation through: • Incorporating the complexity of the landscape; • Valuing the ambiguity that occurs in the interpretation of the landscape; • Using the concepts of closed and contained spaces and the concept of fluid space, the link that ensure the continuity between spaces; • Recognising the existence of the interstitial open spaces; • Using those elements which are common to the distinct typologies of spaces; • Defining the components that must be respected and those that can be respected; • Observing landscape as a whole, while emphasising the relationship between the parts and the whole; and • Rejecting simplification in the landscape transformation process. Underlying this approach is the belief that the process of transformation must be based on the essence of each landscape. This implies the use of elements and structures of the landscape...

Landscape geochemical investigations were conducted upon portions of a natural uniform landscape in southern Norway. This consisted of sampling both soil profile samples and spruce tree twigs for the analysis of twelve chemical elements. These elements were cobalt, copper, nickel, lead, zinc, manganese, magnesium, iron, calcium, sodium, potassium and aluminum which were determined by atomic absorption analysis on standardized extraction techniques for both organic and inorganic materials. Two "landscape traverses" were chosen for a comparative study of the effects of varying landscape parameters upon the trace element distribution patterns throughout the landscape traverses. The object of this study was to test this method of investigation and the concept of an ideal uniform landscape under Norwegian conditions. A "control traverse" was established to represent uniform landscape conditions typical of the study area and was used to determine "normal" or average trace element distribution patterns. A "signal traverse" was selected nearby over an area of lead mineralization where the depth to bedrock is very small. The signal traverse provided an area of similar landscape conditions to those of the control traverse with significant differences in the bedrock configuration and composition. This study was also to determine the effect of the bedrock mineralization upon the distribution patterns of the twelve chemical elements within the major components of the two landscape traverses (i.e. soil profiles and tree branches). The lead distribution within the soils of the signal traverse showed localized accumulations of lead within the overburden with maximum values occurring within the organic A horizon of soil profile #10. Above average concentrations of lead were common within the signal traverse...

The object of this thesis is to provide, through a thorough analysis of human perception and interaction with aesthetics and landscape quality, a comprehensive basis on which to develop a credible methodology for the large scale assessment of perceived landscape quality. The analysis of human perception and interaction with aesthetics and landscape quality is gained by inquiring in depth into a range of theoretical constructs from key disciplines, cultural aspects, and empirical studies covering : 1. the contribution of philosophers to aesthetics 2. the psychology of perception and colour 3. the contribution of Gestalt psychology to aesthetics 4. the psychoanalytical construct of human responses to aesthetics 5. the influence of culture on landscape preferences, tracing the changing perceptions of mountains, the portrayal of landscapes in art, and the design of parks and gardens 6. a review of over 200 surveys of landscape quality in the late 20th century, including typologies and theories of landscape quality Based on the analysis of these and the knowledge gained, an empirical study is formulated and conducted, comprising a study of landscape quality of South Australia, an area of nearly 1 million km - 1. This involves...

Renewable energy production takes on many forms; wind farms and their turbines are but one. Turbines are a unique dynamic infrastructure within the landscape, which signifies a change in social attitude towards sustainable developments. The clarity and simplicity of the turbines’ function (wind blows, blades turn, turbine spins and electrical power is generated) enforces the benign qualities that wind farms possess. However there are implications associated with the compatibility of turbines to landscape visual character and conservation. The environmental impacts associated with wind turbines include noise, shadow flicker, bird strikes and electromagnetic interference with radio and television signals. However, research suggests the major issue facing planning and development approval is on a social level, with visual pollution being the dominant public criticism. Wind farms must be located where consistent strong winds permeate to generate maximum efficiency. The efficiency of output is dependent on clear exposure to the prevailing wind, which normally implies ridgelines and escarpments which are both visually dominant topographical locations. The Australian Wind Energy Association (AUSWEA) has established guidelines confirming that smooth hilltops are the most preferred topography for airflow...

The article presents the shifts of meaning of the term landscape in English and other Germanic languages, from territory to vista and social arena. The concept of landscape forms part of a cultural frame of reference, and changes in the cultural context also affect the meaning of landscape. The dependency of the meaning of landscape on context is shown in an overview of what landscape means in other languages: Spanish, Russian, Thai, Arabic, and Chinese. The different meanings of landscape can also be elucidated by identifying its antonyms, the anti-landscape and the non-landscape. Although commonly criticized in the academic field as being deterministic, early attempts to map the influence of landscape on culture should be re-evaluated in the current trend to understand landscape systemically.; El artículo presenta los cambios de significado del término paisaje en inglés y en otros idiomas germánicos, desde territorio a vista panorámica y área social.

We frequently use the term landscape meaning a territory, scenery or even an object of art and its representation. ln fact, it is quite difficult to define landscape. ln a broader sense, it can be thought as the way we perceive the outside visible world. This means that landscape is deter mined by "the experience and interpretation of the world according to our internal reactions" (Simmel). Above its component elements, land. scape is an invention that results fiom the consciousness of unity. That is the reason why Georg Sinunel or even Anne Cauquelin point out the association between landscape and nature, although they are not the sarne. As far as landscape is concerned, its definition as an état d'âme implies the liquid character of an "intertextural" experience. ln Giuliana-Bruno's terms, this means that our memories and imaginations, as we pass through landscape, fashion the geopsychic and (e)motional rela tionship entailed with places. The purpose of this work is to investigate the role oflandscape in (e)motional experiences interfaced by a virtual environment such as the online world Second Life, created in 2003. Considering that both movement and emotions are particularly shaped by virtual reality, this investigation aims to discuss user's practices of experiencing landscape along tracks. Is landscape in Second Life an imaginary representation with no references to real experience? How is landscape virtually interconnected with emotions and memories? ln or der to answer these questions...

Mapping land-cover land-use change (LCLUC) over regional and continental scales, and long time scales (years and decades), can be accomplished using thematically identified classification maps of a landscape--a LCLU class map. Observations of a landscape's LCLU class map pattern can indicate the most relevant process, like hydrologic or ecologic function, causing landscape scale environmental change. Quantified as Landscape Pattern Metrics (LPM), emergent landscape pat- terns act as Landscape Indicators (LI) when physically interpreted. The common mathematical approach to quantifying observed landscape scale pattern is to have LPM measure how connected a class exists within the landscape, through nonlinear local kernel operations of edges and gradi- ents in class maps. Commonly applied kernel-based LPM that consistently reveal causal processes are Dominance, Contagion, and Fractal Dimension. These kernel-based LPM can be difficult to interpret. The emphasis on an image pixel's edge by gradient operations and dependence on an image pixel's existence according to classification accuracy limit the interpretation of LPM. For example, the Dominance and Contagion kernel-based LPM very similarly measure how connected a landscape is. Because of this...

The landscape assessments are tools of landscape analysis. They can characterize a landscape depending on certain natural and cultural characteristics, that make it distinct for another, and thattranscend the political and administrative boundaries. The landscape characterization products may be called such as “cartas de paisaje”, “catálogos de paisaje”, “cartografías de paisaje”, “landscape character assessments” Considering the value represented as inputs for planning and land management, this work provides an assessment of three landscapes of Uruguay. Is an exercise of conceptualization of the national landscape, from the recognition of its natural and cultural base, using the Landscape Character Assessment Guidance (Countryside Agency / Scottish Natural Heritage). In a complementary, this work use the theoretical and methodological basis of landscape ecology, raised by authors Forman and Godron, to understand the structure, functioning and changes in the landscape from an ecological perspective.; Las evaluaciones de paisaje son herramientas de análisis territorial y paisajístico.
