Em função do crescente processo de liberalização dos mercados de gás natural e de energia elétrica nos países do hemisfério norte, bem como pelo aumento das restrições ambientais, as projeções de demanda mundial de gás natural indicam um forte crescimento, principalmente no segmento de geração de energia elétrica. Assim, pode-se afirmar que haverá uma convergência cada vez maior entre os mercados de gás natural e de eletricidade. O transporte do gás natural em sua forma liquefeita, o GNL (Gás Natural Liquefeito), representa um importante pivô para essa convergência, bem como para uma integração global crescente dos mercados de gás natural e eletricidade. Essas evoluções sempre estiveram distantes da realidade brasileira, pois a geração elétrica predominantemente hídrica historicamente reservou um papel limitado para a geração termelétrica. No entanto, desde 2001, como resultado da crise de abastecimento de energia elétrica, o Brasil também fez esforços importantes rumo a uma maior convergência entre os mercados de gás e eletricidade. No Brasil a geração de energia elétrica é predominantemente baseada no uso de fontes renováveis e obtida por meio de centrais hidroelétricas. Ainda assim é necessária a diversificação das fontes de suprimento de energia para a geração de eletricidade quando o recurso hídrico for escasso. Uma alternativa é utilizar gás natural como combustível para as usinas termoelétricas, como vem sendo introduzido na matriz energética de outros países, permitindo a diversificação das fontes energéticas dos mesmos. A indústria do gás natural, assim como outras atividades industriais, não está isenta de acidentes que podem provocar graves consequências à integridade das pessoas e das propriedades. Objetivos: O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar os índices de Pulsatilidade (IP) e Resistência (IR) das artérias uterinas, o volume uterino e a espessura endometrial após o uso do Sistema Intra-uterino de Levonorgestrel (SIU-LNG) ou do agonista do GnRHa (GnRHa) em pacientes portadoras de endometriose pélvica. Pacientes e métodos: Setenta e nove mulheres voluntárias, com idade entre 18 e 40 anos, foram incluídas neste ensaio clínico comparativo, prospectivo, randomizado e controlado. Dezoito foram eliminadas do estudo baseadas nos critérios de exclusão, As 61 pacientes remanescentes foram divididas em dois grupos: 31 pacientes fizeram parte do grupo SIU-LNG (uma foi excluída antes da inserção por apresentar-se grávida) e 30 fizeram parte do grupo GnRHa. Apesar dos contraceptivos hormonais serem largamente utilizados, a literatura ainda é controversa em relação aos efeitos dos mesmos sobre a densidade mineral óssea (DMO). O sistema intra-uterino liberador de levonorgestrel (SIU-LNG, Mirena®) é utilizado em mais de 100 países, entretanto não existem estudos sobre sua ação na massa óssea das usuárias. O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar a DMO de usuárias do SIU-LNG com a de usuárias de um método contraceptivo não hormonal, dispositivo intra-uterino (DIU TCu380A), além de avaliar os valores de estradiol (E2) nas usuárias de SIU-LNG. Materiais e Métodos: estudo de corte transversal, com 53 usuárias de SIU-LNG e 53 usuárias de DIU pareadas pela idade (±1 ano) e índice de massa corporal (IMC, kg/m2) (±1). A DMO foi realizada no antebraço não dominante na ulna e na porção ultradistal do rádio, mediante a técnica de absorciometria dupla (DXA). Nas usuárias de SIU-LNG foi realizada dosagem de estradiol sérico pela técnica de RIA Resultados: a média de idade foi de 34 anos e a de IMC foi pouco maior que 25 kg/m2 em ambos os grupos. Objetivo: Estudar as alterações citológicas e a flora vaginal nos esfregaços cérvico-vaginais de usuárias de sistema intra-uterino liberador de levonorgestrel (SIU-LNG), por um período de até sete anos. Métodos: O estudo foi realizado no Ambulatório de Planejamento Familiar da Universidade Estadual de Campinas, onde 187 mulheres tiveram o SIU-LNG inserido entre abril e setembro de 1998, ininterruptamente por sete anos consecutivos. Todas as mulheres incluídas faziam parte de um outro estudo para avaliar a eficácia do DIU por esse período de tempo e assinaram um termo de consentimento pós-informado. Introdução: A osteoporose é uma doença sistêmica que afeta principalmente as mulheres. Alguns dos fatores que aceleram a aparição desta doença são a idade e o uso, por longa data, de métodos anticoncepcionais com somente progestágenos. O sistema intrauterino liberador de levonorgestrel (SIU-LNG) é um método difundido para a contracepção e o tratamento de diversas patologias ginecológicas. Na literatura não foram identificados estudos longitudinais prospectivos, com usuárias de longa data deste método, que avaliem seus efeitos sobre a densidade mineral óssea (DMO). Objetivos: Avaliar a DMO em usuárias do SIU-LNG aos sete anos de uso e comparar com elas mesmas aos 10 anos de uso e com um grupo-controle de usuárias de método anticoncepcional não hormonal. Natural gas is estimated to be the fastest growing component of world primary energy consumption. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply chain is a way of transporting natural gas over seas, by following a procedure of gas liquefaction, transportation in specialized tankers and regasification. During the last decade the LNG market changed substantial with the emergence of a short-term market. Analysis was performed examining the needs, the conditions and the risks of this change. The implications of the short-term market were investigated and an assessment was made regarding the future of a global LNG market. The growing global concern over ship emissions in recent years has driven policy change at the international level toward more stringent vessel emissions standards. The policy change has also been an impetus for innovation and increased attention being paid to existing technologies in marine engineering that lessen ship emissions. It is estimated that the share of emissions from shipping to total global emissions is increasing, as world trade grows, and land-based emissions sources become cleaner. Shipping currently accounts for 2-4% of CO₂, 10-20% of NOx and 4-8% of SO₂ global emissions. Gas turbines and gas engines, hybrid diesel-gas systems, and dual fuel diesel electric engines are examples of the existing engine system technology that can burn natural gas as a fuel and lessen ship emissions. Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) fueled vessels in the gas burning mode result in the elimination of all SO₂ emissions, and reduced NOx, CO₂, and particulate matter emissions compared to the emissions from a typical vessel powered by marine diesel. Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is an odourless, colourless, non-toxic substance (i.e. methane, or natural gas) that has been cooled to -161°C for ease of transport and storage to be used for power generation, transport as well as in commercial, residential and manufacturing settings. As an export-oriented resource, LNG has the potential to benefit the Australian and Western Australian economies immensely. With rising LNG prices and global demand expected to remain tight, Australia's enormous gas reserves and its growing LNG industry are well-placed to take advantage of growing demands for natural gas in the Asia-Pacific, India and the US. Recent developments in the Browse Basin off the Kimberley coast have revealed some 30 Tcf of gas, which is significant by world standards. Arab countries hold about 29 percent of the world's proven gas reserves, but every country (except Qatar and Algeria) is short of the gas supply needed to meet its current and projected demand. The rapid growth in gas demand is mostly a consequence of a sharp increase in electricity consumption. Gas trade in the Arab world has been dominated by the objective of exporting gas in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to points in Asia, Europe, and North America. Gas trade within the region is limited to rather small volumes, moved from Algeria to Tunisia and Morocco; from Egypt to Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon; and from Qatar to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) - all through pipelines. The shortage of gas in the Arab countries has become more pronounced, justifying the higher gas prices needed to secure imported gas or to encourage domestic gas production. Such changes in the landscape provide an impetus for the Arab world to optimize the region's gas resources, at least partly on the basis of meeting growing regional demand. Methane and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) have been recently considered both for launch and for in-space applications because of several advantages they present if compared with other commonly used fuels. In particular, several studies are dedicated at the use of methane in liquid rocket engines with turbopumb fed systems. In this framework, the present study focuses on the use of methane or LNG as coolant in regenerative cooling systems. The study has two main purposes. The first is to understand what are the differences between using pure methane or LNG in a cooling system. The second purpose is to investigate on the heat transfer deterioration which is a thermodynamic phenomenon that could affect methane or LNG in cooling channels. The idea is to fulfill these objectives by numerical studies. The test cases that have to be analyzed are straight channels with circular cross section, a length of the order of the meter and a diameter of the order of the millimeter. The Reynolds number is of the order of 10^5 − 10^6 , which implies that the flow is turbulent. This article develops a formal model for comparing the cost structure of the two main transport options for natural gas: liquefied natural gas (LNG) and pipelines. In particular, it evaluates how variations in the prices of natural gas and greenhouse gas emissions affect the relative cost-efficiency of these two options. Natural gas is often promoted as the most environmentally friendly of all fossil fuels, and LNG as a modern and efficient way of transporting it. Some research has been carried out into the local environmental impact of LNG facilities, but almost none into aspects related to climate change. This paper concludes that at current price levels for natural gas and CO2 emissions the distance from field to consumer and the volume of natural gas transported are the main determinants of transport costs. The pricing of natural gas and greenhouse emissions influence the relative cost-efficiency of LNG and pipeline transport, but only to a limited degree at current price levels. Because more energy is required for the LNG process (especially for fuelling the liquefaction process) than for pipelines at distances below 9100 km, LNG is more exposed to variability in the price of natural gas and greenhouse gas emissions up to this distance. Background: Heavy menstrual bleeding is an important health problem. Two frequently used therapies are the levonorgestrel intra-uterine system (LNG-IUS) and endometrial ablation. The LNG-IUS can be applied easily by the general practitioner, which saves costs, but has considerable failure rates. As an alternative, endometrial ablation is also very effective, but this treatment has to be performed by a gynaecologist. Due to lack of direct comparison of LNG-IUS with endometrial ablation, there is no evidence based preferred advice for the use of one of these treatment possibilities. Method/design: A multicenter randomised controlled trial, organised in a network infrastructure in the Netherlands in which general practitioners and gynaecologists collaborate. Women ≥ 34 years with heavy menstrual bleeding, a Pictorial Blood Assessment Chart (PBAC) score exceeding 150 points and no future child wish can participate in the trial. After informed consent, women will be randomised to a strategy starting with a levonorgestrel releasing intrauterine system or a strategy starting with endometrial ablation. Some industry observers argue that major exporters have acted irrationally by not arbitraging prices. This is also difficult to reconcile with a competitive model in which regional price differences exist solely because of transport costs. We show that a model which incorporates market power can rationalize observed prices and trade flows. We highlight how different features of the LNG market limit the ability and/or incentive of other players to engage in arbitrage, including constraints in LNG shipping. We also present some rough estimates of market power in short-term sales by Qatar (to Japan and the UK, respectively), and discuss the potential impact of US LNG exports.

The long-term relationship between the prices of natural gas in the United Kingdom and oil-indexed natural gas in the North West European market is the result of seasonal arbitrage. This paper empirically investigates this long-term relationship and offers two main contributions: (i) To the best knowledge of the author, this is the first study to take into ac- count important UK spot gas market drivers such as seasonality, temperature and gas storage injection/withdrawal behaviour when examining the structural relationship between UK and Continental European markets. (ii) The effect of UK import capacity extensions since 2005, through both pipeline and LNG regasification capacity, on this long-term relationship will be analyzed. The results suggest that there is a significant structural break in 2006 when the two markets decouple and move from an old to a new, much weaker, long-term relationship. From the end of 2008 onwards, the time at which UK LNG imports started to increase, this long-term relationship appears to break down altogether.

It is apparent from the literature on LNG spills that there is a considerable lack of knowledge in many areas of technical importance to the safety assessment of LNG receiving terminals. For this reason, a thorough critical review of the state-of-the-art regarding the technical aspects of LNG spill evaluation is in preparation. The purpose of this review is to focus attention on these aspects of the problem that are least understood and which are crucial to a proper assessment of the hazards. It is realized that ERDA has already conducted an LNG Safety and Control Workship, the outcome of which was a set of conclusions and recommendations regarding the safety and control issues of LNG operations.

This paper studies the possible impacts of liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects on natural gas prices on both sides of the U. S.-Mexico border in California. In that state gas prices are high and demand is expected to grow. Several projects for LNG facilities have been proposed and have to cope with public opinions against them. In Baja California, four LNG projects are under development given the rising demand forecasted for the next years. After a detailed study of the opportunity for LNG projects, we conclude with an analysis of the fundamentals of the current and future price formation in both sides of the U. S.Mexico border.
