A partir deste estudo...

This paper examines the effect(s) of technological innovation in companies’ key relationships on knowledge acquisition and knowledge exploitation. We propose, building on and contributing to the existing views of knowledge-based theories, that knowledge acquisition stimulates firms’ activities, transforming internal processes and creating competitive advantage. It presents the main premises of a conceptual model for understanding the processes and the impacts of knowledge transfer, acquisition and dissemination inside the organization. This is demonstrated within a case study approach, which explores the successful introduction of technological change within an enterprise setting. The case study is conducted in a high‐technology company, on the technology information sector, based in Portugal. The results indicate that technological innovation seems to be associated with indirect effects on knowledge generated in companies and increased network connections, which, in turn, are associated with increased knowledge‐based innovation. Knowledge acquisition, in turn, is positively associated with knowledge exploitation for competitive advantage through new product development and technological uniqueness. The study explores the impact of the introduction of an innovation...

Dissertação para obtenção do Grau de Mestre em Engenharia Biomédica; Internet provides a new environment to develop a variety of applications. Hence, large amounts of data, increasing every day, are stored and transferred through the internet. These data are normally weakly structured making information disperse, uncorrelated, non-transparent and difficult to access and share. Semantic Web, proposed by theWorldWideWeb Consortium (W3C), addresses this problem by promoting semantic structured data, like ontologies, enabling machines to perform more work involved in finding, combining, and acting upon information on theWeb. Pursuing this vision, a Knowledge Acquisition System (KAS) was created, written in JavaScript using JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) as the data structure and JSON Schema to define that structure. It grants new ways to acquire and store knowledge semantically structured and human readable. Plus, structuring data with a Schema generates a software robust and error – free. A novel Human Computer Interaction (HCI) framework was constructed employing this KAS, allowing the end user to configure and control medical devices. To demonstrate the potential of this tool, we present the configuration and control of an electrostimulator. Nowadays...

This paper examines the use of inductive machine learning for knowledge acquisition, and compares two inductive learning programs, CRLS and C4, with respect to their classification accuracy and comprehensibility on the task of generating decision rules by induction from two medical databases. Each program shows the ability to outperform the other in classification accuracy, depending on the database and the nature of the data. Decision trees and criteria tables are compared and contrasted with respect to comprehensibility, and both are seen to have advantages and drawbacks.

The goal of the work reported here is to capture the commonsense knowledge of non-expert human contributors. Achieving this goal will enable more intelligent human-computer interfaces and pave the way for computers to reason about our world. In the domain of natural language processing, it will provide the world knowledge much needed for semantic processing of natural language. To acquire knowledge from contributors not trained in knowledge engineering, I take the following four steps: (i) develop a knowledge representation (KR) model for simple assertions in natural language, (ii) introduce cumulative analogy, a class of nearest-neighbor based analogical reasoning algorithms over this representation, (iii) argue that cumulative analogy is well suited for knowledge acquisition (KA) based on a theoretical analysis of effectiveness of KA with this approach, and (iv) test the KR model and the effectiveness of the cumulative analogy algorithms empirically. To investigate effectiveness of cumulative analogy for KA empirically, Learner, an open source system for KA by cumulative analogy has been implemented, deployed, and evaluated. (The site "1001 Questions," is available at http://teach-computers.org/learner.html). Learner acquires assertion-level knowledge by constructing shallow semantic analogies between a KA topic and its nearest neighbors and posing these analogies as natural language questions to human contributors. Suppose...

Background: The management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) involves partially recursive attempts to make optimal treatment decisions that balance the risks of the treatment to the patient against the benefits of the treatment, while monitoring the patient closely for clinical response, as inferred from prior and residual disease activity, and unwanted drug effects, including abnormal laboratory findings. To the extent that this process is logical, based on best available evidence and determined by considered opinion, it should be amenable to capture within a Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSSs). The formalisation of logical transformations and their execution by computer tools at point of patient encounter holds the promise of more efficient and consistent use of treatment rules and more reliable clinical decision making. Research Setting: The early Rheumatoid Arthritis (eRA) clinic of the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) with approximately 20 RA patient visits per week, and involving 160 patients with a median duration of treatment of more than 4.5 years. Methods: The study applied a Knowledge Engineering approach to interpret the complexities of RA management, in order to implement a knowledge-based CDSS. The study utilised Knowledge Acquisition processes to elicit and explicitly define the RA management rules underpinning the development of the CDSS; the processes were (1) conducting a comprehensive literature review of RA management...

The present work about the processing and experience of, and knowledge acquisition with hybrid documentary material addresses a widely neglected field of research, which is nevertheless very important with respect to formal and informal learning. This thesis picks up current changes in the documentary genre such that a highly topical and contentious issue is addressed. The present work identifies narrative elements (dramatization, emotionalization, personalization, fictionalization) as making the difference between classical and hybrid documentary formats. These narrative elements are also suitable to understand the different processing styles (narrative processing, expository processing) occurring in hybrid documentary formats. By analyzing the influences of two of the narrative elements on processing, experience, and knowledge acquisition, further insights are gained into the way hybrid documentary formats are processed, thereby also confirming existing theoretical models and showing that these models can be applied to hybrid documentary formats as well. Dramatization in hybrid documentary formats enables narrative processing and the pleasant narrative experiences of transportation in addition to expository processing, which is further facilitated by fictionalization. A dominance of narrative processing over expository processing has been shown as well. During narrative processing...

Thesis (Ph.D.) - Indiana University, Mass Communications/Telecommunications, 2008; The primary purpose of this study is to empirically investigate the potentially widening gap in information acquisition across different educational groups, related to traditional print versus online news formats. Newspaper readership is declining and simultaneously the number of online news users is growing. In democratic societies the ability of new media formats to deliver cognitively accessible information to all citizens is indeed a pressing issue. This dissertation adopted the strengths of both survey and experimental traditions of knowledge gap research. Specifically, this study follows in the survey research tradition by emphasizing social structural aspects of the knowledge gap phenomenon. At the same time, this research used controlled experimental procedures and an assortment of memory measures to rigorously investigate the formation of knowledge gaps. The experimental procedure also allowed for focus on a much neglected dimension of knowledge gain, namely news exposure preferences (public affairs vs. entertainment) of citizens. To this effect, news exposure was examined using a behavioral measure, which is more rigorous than the heavily relied on self-report measure. The findings show strong support of the existence of knowledge gaps. First...

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.; The MK 92 MOD 2 Fire Control System is a complex weapons system based on 1970's technology. It is a maintenance intensive system, requiring extensive technical trouble-shooting and, occasionally, supplemental shore based support. Development of an expert maintenance system for the MK 92 MOD 2 Fire Control System offers a viable solution to the labor intensive efforts of the technicians, reduces the number of Visits by shore based support staff, and provides relief to an already overburdened maintenance budget. It will also significantly reduce the depot repair 'no fault evident' rate which is the result of good parts replaced because of defective trouble shooting. This thesis addresses the first iteration of prototype development of the performance channels of the MK 92 MOD 2 Maintenance Advisor Expert System. Specific issues covered include the scope of the project, hardware selection, system shell selection, knowledge acquisition, knowledge representation, knowledge implementation, and lessons learned in the process.; Lieutenant, United States Navy

Approved for public release; distribution unlimited.; Knowledge acquisition is often considered a 'bottleneck' in the development of expert systems. This study conducted a review of 14 knowledge acquisitions methods with a survey of knowledge types, task characteristics, and representation schemes. All of the knowledge acquisitions techniques are considered deficient in their ability to capture a representation of an expert's mental model and procedural knowledge. Cognitive feedback and the lens model, drawn from Egon Brunswik's probabilistic functionalism, are proposed as an alternate knowledge acquisition methodology. Cognitive feedback's theoretical underpinnings are explained as are the various uses to which it has been put. A summary of the many research studies conducted into the effectiveness of cognitive feedback is presented. An automated knowledge acquisition tool using cognitive feedback is proposed and illustrated with state transition diagrams and sample computer screens.; Lieutenant, United States Navy

This paper addresses the topic of knowledge management in multinational companies (MNCs). Its purpose is to examine the role of expatriates in knowledge acquisition and transfer within MNCs. Specifically it focuses on knowledge acquisition and transfer from one MNC head office located in Germany to two Portuguese subsidiaries as a basis for competitive advantage in their Portuguese subsidiaries. A qualitative research methodology is used, specifically through an exploratory case study approach, which examines how international assignments are important for the role of expatriates In knowledge acquisition and transfer between foreign head offices and their Portuguese subsidiaries. The data were collected through semi structured interviews to 10 Portuguese repatriates from two Portuguese subsidiaries of one foreign MNC. The findings suggest that the reasons that lead to expatriating employees from Portuguese subsidiaries to foreign head offices are connected to (1) knowledge management strategies to development the subsidiary’s performance; (2) new skills and knowledge acquisition by future team leaders and business/product managers in Portuguese subsidiaries; (3) procuring knowledge, from agents in head office, to be disseminated amongst co-workers in Portuguese subsidiaries; (4) acquiring global management skills...

Computerizing the game of Bridge has not yet met with much success. The efforts to date have fallen short of any reasonable technical proficiency. The game does appear to be perfectly suited for an expert system, however, since the game can be segmented into three contexts (Bidding, Play of the Hand, and Defense), each context can be described by a set of rules, and a series of inferences can be used to fire those rules. Each of the contexts is reviewed, then Bidding is chosen for further research. This thesis claims that the set of all hands subdivides into 1 1 bidding classifications, based on a number of selection criteria. One of these subsets, Invitational Hands, is studied in detail Classic knowledge acquisition techniques are used to define Invitational Hands, assimilate the knowledge, then translate the facts, inferences, deductions and suppositions into a knowledge base. Changes in the state of the auction as bidding progresses are stored in state variables. These state variables are used to navigate the knowledge base to find the next bid. The interaction of state variable settings and facts firing rules in the knowledge base implement a frame architecture.

Despite recent progress, knowledge acquisition remains a central problem for the development of intelligent systems. There are many people throughout the world doing studies in this area. However, very few automated techniques have made it to the market place. In this light, the idea of automating the knowledge acquisition process is very appealing and may lead to a break through. Most (if not all) of the approaches and techniques concerning intelligent, expert systems and specifically knowledge-based systems can still be considered in their infancy and definitely do not subscribe to any kind of standards. Many things have yet to be learned and incorporated into the technology and combined with methods from traditional computer science and psychology. KE-KIT is a prototype system which attempts to automate a portion of the knowledge engineering process. The emphasis is on the automation of knowledge acquisition activities. However, the transformation of knowledge from an intermediate form to a knowledge -base format is also addressed. The approach used to automate the knowledge acquisition process is based on the personal construct theory developed by George Kelly in the field of psychology. This thesis gives and in-depth view of knowledge engineering with a concentration on the knowledge acquisition process. Several issues and approaches are described. Greater details surrounding the personal construct theory approach to knowledge acquisition and its use of a repertory grid are given. In addition...

This study addresses the problems of knowledge acquisition in expert system development examines programs whose goal is to solve part of these problems. Among them are knowledge acquisition tools, which provide the knowledge engineer with a set of Artificial Intelligence primitives, knowledge acquisition aids, which offer to the knowledge engineer a guidance in knowledge elicitation, and finally, automated systems, which try to replace the human interviewer with a machine interface. We propose an alternative technique to these approaches: an interactive syntactic analyzer of an emerging knowledge base written with the expert system shell called Nexpert Object. This program intends to help the knowledge engineer during the editing of a knowledge base, both from a knowledge engineering and a knowledge representation point of view. The implementation is a Desk Accessory written in C, running on Macintosh "concurrently" with Nexpert Object.

Recent research in the Knowledge Acquisition (KA) field, centers on defining a formal methodology for the KA process. This research includes the following goals: automating the KA process to decrease the KA time constraint; applying psychological techniques to extract the underlying structure of the expert's knowledge; and defining expertise in terms of "generic tasks" to yield possible knowledge organizations and strategies for the implementation of the expert system. This thesis provides an overview of the benefits and concerns of an automated KA system, psychological scaling techniques as they apply to KA, and the relevance of generic tasks. A generic task defines a knowledge type and organization, and a control strategy that characterizes a component of an expert system. This thesis also includes the design and implementation of a Knowledge Acquisition Tool for Identification of Generic Tasks. This tool provides an interface to the expert for the initial KA encounter. Using psychological techniques, the tool extracts a list of the main concepts of expertise, and elicits a rating from the expert comparing the similarity of each of these concepts to generic task concepts. The results become inputs to a clustering technique that organize the concepts into the generic tasks. The result of any concepts that do not cluster could identify a previously undefined generic task. The implementation is in the C language...

Knowledge Management systems utilising a number of different techniques have been developed for manufacturing processes including sheet metal forming. These are designed to overcome knowledge loss and allow an organisation to more effectively leverage its corporate experience base. Most systems focus on design activities only, they do not capture and integrate the experience gained on the shop floor during testing and production. In order to be used in these areas, knowledge capture must be as simple and time efficient as possible, even if this is at the expense of later potential reasoning. The design, implementation and results from the use of a knowledge acquisition system of this kind for the automotive stamping industry are described. Despite perceived conceptions of data captured, it is concluded that underlying relationships can be extracted from the information entered, allowing significant reuse of captured experience, whilst maintaining timely knowledge acquisition.
