OBJECTIVE: Brazil is the country with the largest community of Japanese descendants in the world, from a migration movement that started in 1908. However, more recently (1988), a movement in the opposite direction began. Many of these descendants went to Japan for work purposes and suffered mental distress. Some of them sought treatment in Japan, while others returned to Brazil to seek treatment. The aim of the present study was to compare the sociodemographic profile and diagnoses of Japanese Brazilian psychiatric outpatients in Japan (remaining group) and in Brazil (returning group). METHOD: All consecutive Japanese Brazilian outpatients who received care from the psychiatric units in Japan and Brazil from April 1997 to April 2000 were compared. The diagnoses were based on ICD-10 and were made by psychiatrists. Sociodemographic data and diagnoses in Brazil and Japan were compared by means of the Chi-Squared Test. RESULTS: The individuals who returned to Brazil were mostly male and unmarried, had lived alone in Japan, had stayed there for short periods and were classified in the schizophrenia group. The individuals who remained in Japan were mostly female and married, were living with family or friends, had stayed there for long periods and were classified in the anxiety group. Logistic regression showed that the most significant factors associated with the returning group were that they had lived alone and stayed for short periods (OR = 0.93 and 40.21...

PURPOSE: To compare orthopedics publications from USA, Japan and China. METHODS: Scientific papers belong to 'Orthopedics' category of Science Citation Index Expanded subject categories were retrieved from the "PubMed' and 'Web of Knowledge' online databases. RESULTS: In the field of orthopedics, the annual number increased significantly from 2000 to 2012 in the three countries (p<0.001). The share of articles increased significantly in China, but decreased significantly in Japan and USA (p<0.05). In 2012, USA contributed 35.3% of the total world output in orthopedics field and ranked 1st; Japan contributed 5.9% and ranked 4th; China contributed 5.2% and ranked 5th. Publications from USA had the highest accumulated IFs and the highest total citations of articles (USA > Japan > China, p<0.001). Average IF from USA was much higher than Japan and China (p<0.001). USA published the most articles in the top ten orthopedics journals (USA (14355) > Japan (1702) > China (487), p<0.01). CONCLUSION: Although China has undergone significant increase in annual number and percentage of scientific publication in orthopedics journals, it still lags far behind USA and Japan in the field of orthopedics in terms of quantity and quality.

In preparation for a collaborative multidisciplinary study of the pathogenesis of esophageal cancer, the authors reviewed the published literature to identify similarities and differences between Japan and China in esophageal cancer epidemiology. Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is the predominant histologic type, while the incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma remains extremely low in both countries. Numerous epidemiologic studies in both countries show that alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking are contributing risk factors for ESCC. There are differences, however, in many aspects of esophageal cancer between Japan and China, including cancer burden, patterns of incidence and mortality, sex ratio of mortality, risk factor profiles, and genetic variants. Overall incidence and mortality rates are higher in China than in Japan, and variation in mortality and incidence patterns is greater in China than in Japan. During the study period (1987–2000), the decline in age-adjusted mortality rates was more apparent in China than in Japan. Risk factor profiles differed between high- and low-incidence areas within China, but not in Japan. The association of smoking and drinking with ESCC risk appears to be weaker in China than in Japan. Genome-wide association studies in China showed that variants in several chromosome regions conferred increased risk...

In Japan, the annual number of deaths from gastric cancer is approximately 50,000 and there has been no change over the last 50 years. So far, all efforts have been directed toward improving the detection of early gastric cancer by barium X-ray and endoscopy, since early cancer has a good prognosis, resulting in Japan having the best diagnostic capability for early gastric cancer worldwide. The 5-year survival rate of gastric cancer patients exceeds 60 % in Japan and is much higher than that in Europe and the US (20 %) because of this superior diagnosis of early gastric cancer. In February 2013, national health insurance coverage for Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy to treat H. pylori-associated chronic gastritis became available in Japan. H. pylori-associated gastritis leads to development of gastric and duodenal ulcers and gastric polyps. Therefore, providing treatment for gastritis is likely to substantially decrease the prevalence of both gastric and duodenal ulcers and polyps. Because treatment for H. pylori-associated gastritis, which leads to atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer, is now covered by health insurance in Japan, a strategy to eliminate gastric cancer-related deaths by taking advantage of this innovation was planned. According to this strategy...

Background: In industrialized countries, assessment of the causal effect of physician supply on population health has yielded mixed results. Since the scope of child vaccination is an indicator of preventive health service utilization, this study investigates the correlation between vaccination coverage and pediatrician supply as a reflection of overall pediatric health during a time of increasing pediatrician numbers in Japan. Methods: Cross-sectional data were collected from publicly available sources for 2010. Dependent variables were vaccination coverage for measles and diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus (DPT) by region. The primary predictor of interest was number of pediatricians per 10 000-child population (pediatrician density) at the municipality level. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to estimate associations of interest, conditional on a large range of demographic and infrastructure-related factors as covariates, including non-pediatric physician density, total population, per capita income, occupation, unemployment rate, prevalence of single motherhood, number of hospital beds per capita, length of roads, crime rate, accident rate, and metropolitan area code as urban/rural status. The percentage of the population who completed college-level education or higher in 2010 was included in the model as a proxy for education level. Results: Pediatrician density was positively and significantly associated with vaccination coverage for both vaccine series. On average...

Entscheidend war für sie, dass sie durch diesen Ritus ihre religiöse Identität von Generation zu Generation überlieferen konnten.; Baptism as a rite of purification and initiation was of great importance for the first Christians in Japan. In their case, the recognised special rules for baptism...

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the changes through the time of the West European academic images and stereotypes of Japan since the 1970s, and to study how Japan has been produced and constructed for Europe in some major academic disciplines, that is, economics, business management studies, social sciences, and across these disciplines. Therefore, it is a thesis to clarify the European imaginations and stereotypisations of Japan as reflected in the West European academic debate. It also aims to illuminate the European conceptualisation of Japan. How have the European academics perceived and interpreted the Japanese economy, its business management, society and historical backdrop since the 1970s? How have the images and stereotypes of Japan been constructed and developed for Europe as a model, as a threat or as the Other? Do any remarkable shared features or differences between images and stereotypes exist within each period or each academic discipline? These questions are addressed in the thesis. The thesis was born out of an academic interest in the development of the civilisational dialogue between Europe and Japan. Europe had always presented the models to emulate for the other non-Western nations, including - at least previously - Japan. After a century of Japanese interest in emulating European models of modernisation...

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi ushered in a new era in Japan’s international trade policy in January 2002 when he and his Singaporean counterpart, Goh Chok Tong, signed the Japan-Singapore Economic Partnership Agreement (JSEPA), the first bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed between Asian countries. This trade strategy also reflected Japan’s interest in launching its so-called ‘multi-layered trade policy’ which meant the pursuit of bilateral and regional trading arrangements, including FTAs, in an attempt to complement multilateralism based on the GATT/WTO to reinvigorate efforts to achieve global trade liberalisation. ¶ This paper aims to examine how and why Japan and Singapore decided to pursue FTAs, what interests both perceived in their pursuit of FTAs, what elements contributed to both countries being linked in this trade policy arrangement, and what implications the JSEPA has had for the FTA movement in East Asia. It argues that the JSEPA was made possible mainly through Singapore’s initial offer to exclude agricultural products from tariff elimination. But Japan faced problems in seeking FTAs with other ASEAN countries which were less developed than Singapore and had a higher proportion of agricultural exports...

Prior to the signing of the Long-Term Trade Agreement (LTTA) in 1978, management of China’s economic relations with Japan was centrally planned. The LTAA agreement, however, allowed the two countries to develop special bilateral economic relations, with China relying heavily on Japan for capital and technology to fuel its modernisation drive and Japan depending on China’s energy and raw materials to enhance its economic security. But China’s marketoriented reforms led to a transformation of economic relations between the two countries. Balanced bilateral trade became difficult to sustain as China’s oil production stagnated, and it became impossible to meet the huge demand for purchase of Japanese capital goods. As China reoriented its development strategy to adjust the balance between its different sectors, implementation of the LTTA agreement became harder to maintain. More generally, China’s global economic interdependence increased with internationalisation of the Chinese economy, contributing to Japan’s relative decline as a trading partner for China. Marketisation transformed the management of China–Japan economic relations, with decentralised economic interests becoming the driving force in the pattern of bilateral trade flows. From the mid-1980s...

The global balance of power is shifting towards Australia's neighbourhood. Australia's relationship with the United States has long been a foundation of its defence policy. It is therefore well placed to deepen its security cooperation with US allies in the region such as Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK). This report analyses Australia's bilateral relationships with these two countries, covering both military-to-military linkages and civilian defence industry cooperation. Successive Australian governments have given strong rhetorical support to Australia's defence relationships with Japan and the ROK. This report finds that these pronouncements have not always translated into concrete action. Japan's Constitution prevents significant military cooperation with countries other than the United States. The ROK, meanwhile, has been preoccupied with preventing war on the Korean Peninsula, so it has not engaged significantly with the Australian military. The report finds that humanitarian, peacekeeping and disaster relief missions are the most likely areas of security cooperation between the countries. However, Australian forces have difficulty working effectively with Japanese and ROK troops in joint operations. Troops face linguistic...

From Federation until the onset of the Pacific War, Australia looked anxiously north towards Japan. Its contact with Japan during this period was predominantly characterised by fear, which manifested itself in almost all dealings with Japan. However, this was tempered by the realisation, in some senior quarters, of the value of developing a viable trade relationship with the emerging Pacific Power. Australia ' s mistrust of Japan framed relations between the two countries. Its restrictive immigration policies were partly a response to Australia's fear of Japan and the Asian 'other'. Australia's identity as a white outpost of Britain affected its perceptions of Japan, while its 'White Australia' policy was insulting to the Japanese. Japan's victory over Russia in 1905 led Australia to feel increasingly vulnerable. This feeling of insecurity persisted, despite its alliance with Japan in WWI. Following the war, Australia's opposition to Japan's racial equality proposal in 1919 demonstrated its suspicion of Japan. The Australian government believed that this was a Japanese attempt to undermine the 'White Australia' policy. Trade was a central theme in Australia's relationship with Japan. The Australian Goodwill Mission · to Japan in 1934 under the leadership of the Minister for External Affairs...

Japan is fast becoming a major node of global cultural production. A host of Japanese cultural products have been created for domestic consumption, including animation, comics, film, music, and television (localization). The increasing export of these Japanese cultural products to Europe and North America underlines globalization is not merely a Western preserve but incorporates Japan (lo-globalization). As Japan has become part of this decentered globalization, it is, in turn, exporting cultural products to Asia (glocalization). However, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan are exporting their local cultural products to Japan (localization?). These developments raise a series of issues: how have local Japanese cultural products originated and changed over time; how have Japan's cultural products become popularized and insinuated themselves so effectively into Western culture; why has Japan been a latecomer in the export of cultural products to Asia; and how can the reverse process of exporting cultural products from South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan and other Asian economies to Japan be theorized? These issues are addressed by examining the origins and transformation of Japanese comics (manga), their export to the global market, the reasons for their delayed export to Asia and the reverse flow of comics from Asia to Japan.
