This review aims to provide an insight into human learning processes by examining the role of cognitive and emotional unconscious processing in mentally integrating visual and verbal instructional materials. Reviewed literature shows that conscious mental integration does not happen all the time, nor does it necessarily result in optimal learning. Students of all ages and levels of experience cannot always have conscious awareness, control, and the intention to learn or promptly and continually organize perceptual, cognitive, and emotional processes of learning. This review suggests considering the role of unconscious learning processes to enhance the understanding of how students form or activate mental associations between verbal and pictorial information. The understanding would assist in presenting students with spatially-integrated verbal and pictorial instructional materials as a way of facilitating mental integration and improving teaching and learning performance.

Recommender Systems are used by many companies that operate e-commerce to suggest items to its customers in a customized way. To achieve this end, these systems analyze the profile of the users through their personal data or by its interaction with the computing environment. Virtual Learning Environments, in turn, are computational environments used in teaching and learning in distance education, and aims to mediate the interactions among their users, such as teachers and students. In these environments are usually stored teaching materials used in courses such as word processing documents, brochures, and even audio and video. Over time, the number of textbooks tends to grow, making it important to have a tool that makes customized recommendations for users of the environment. Given these concepts, this work addresses the creation of a recommender system model of instructional materials to be used in Virtual Learning Environments, in order to suggest to users, instructional materials consistent with their profile. The creation of a recommendation system architecture, used in implementing a computer system model, to test and verify its operation, as the algorithm for generating recommendations, will also be addressed. Finally, the paper addresses the experimental work with students in an extension course...

Studies have shown that learning outcomes are related to the amount of time students engage in learning tasks. However, visits to schools have revealed that students are often taught for only a fraction of the intended time, particularly in lower-income countries. Losses are due to informal school closures, teacher absenteeism, delays, early departures, and sub-optimal use of time in the classroom. A study was undertaken to develop an efficient methodology for measuring instructional time loss. Thus, instructional time use was measured in sampled schools in Tunisia, Morocco, Ghana, and the Brazilian state of Pernambuco. The percentage of time that students were engaged in learning vis-à-vis government expectations was approximately 39 percent in Ghana, 63 percent in Pernambuco, 71 percent in Morocco, and 78 percent in Tunisia. Instructional time use is a mediator variable that is challenging to measure, so it often escapes scrutiny. Research suggests that merely financing the ingredients of instruction is not enough to produce learning outcomes; students must also get sufficient time to process the information. The quantity-quality tradeoff that often accompanies large-scale enrollments may be partly due to instructional time restrictions. Time wastage also distorts budgetary outlays and teacher salary rates. To achieve the Millennium Development Goals students must get more of the time that governments...

The Kyrgyz Republic is in a state of educational transition. Its process of reform is aimed at improving education quality by increasing the quality of its teachers, reducing inequity in education finance, and updating its curriculum and instructional materials. Improving school autonomy and accountability are two of the main recommendations made by recent analysis. Therefore, the benchmarking of these two issues is timely. Budgetary autonomy is emerging; local governments are free to assign the budget to schools but lack mechanisms to improve budgetary efficiency and equity. Personnel autonomy is latent, with district-level offices of the Ministry of education and science being in charge of teacher selection under a central pay scale. Education in the Kyrgyz Republic is regulated by the National Education Law of 1992, amended in 2003. Teachers and preschool education are managed under separate laws. There are five indicators of school autonomy and accountability that can help benchmark an education system's policies that enable school autonomy and accountability: school autonomy in budget planning and approval; school autonomy in personnel management; the participation of the school council in school finance; the assessment of school and student performance; and school accountability to stakeholders. This report focuses specifically on policies in the area of school autonomy and accountability.

Improving the quality of literacy teaching may require intervening at different levels, for example, encouraging school attendance and optimizing textbook format and teaching methods. Reading is a complex task involving perceptual, motor, linguistic, phonological, and memory components, each of which has a crucial role in determining reading rate. High poverty rates continue to have a negative impact on human resource development and education quality in Africa, further complicating the ability of most countries to reach the Education for All (EFA) and Millennium Development Goals (MDG). Moreover, Africa and Asia are hosts to most of the world's multilingual countries, in which textbook availability in major indigenous languages is sorely lacking. Therefore, it is important to take all possible steps to maximize the effectiveness of teaching interventions. In parallel, also the quality of textbooks is a crucial factor for quality education, especially in developing countries. It is important to dispose of well-written and well-designed textbooks...

O primeiro software apresentado é a planilha eletrônica e, a seguir, é estudado o software Modellus.

The Education Trust (Ed Trust) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote academic achievement for all students at all levels nationwide. One of Ed Trust’s six main advocacy agenda items is support for college- and career-ready education standards in all states. As part of its commitment, Ed Trust supports state adoption of the Common Core State Standards (Common Core) to raise the bar for student achievement across the nation. Policy Questions (1) Which states can The Education Trust identify as leaders in providing instructional materials to support teachers in the transition to the Common Core State Standards? (2) What characteristics of the leader states’ efforts in providing Common Core-aligned instructional materials can promising states use as they develop Common Core-aligned curricula? Identifying Leader States Of the 45 states which have adopted the Common Core, only some of them have developed Common Core-aligned instructional materials for teachers at the state level. Among these participating states, the threshold criterion for a “leader” state in this study is development of Common Core-aligned instructional materials and making the materials available to teachers in their states. To determine which states have made the most progress in providing instructional materials for teachers...

Our original proposal included designing, developing and delivering one entirely new distance learning history course, 302 Modern Europe and revising and upgrading an existing distance learning history course, 301 Modern America. Building these two courses would have resulted in two comprehensive bibliographies of online instructional resources, one for use in European history courses and one for use in American history courses, whether taught in distance learning or campus formats. Our experience in building these two courses using online instructional resources and the bibliographies that resulted were, in turn, intended to be used in a series of workshops for College of Liberal Arts faculty in how to locate and use readily available online instructional materials. The Learning Innovations Grant Committee recommended to the Provost, and he concurred, that only the first phase of our proposed project, designing, developing and delivering a distance learning version of 302 Modern Europe and developing a bibliography of online instructional resources for teaching modern European history be funded. Even though the proposed project was scaled down, the general hypothesis on which the project rested remained in tact : There exists an ample supply of high quality online instructional materials that can be located and used to construct effective and engaging undergraduate distance learning and blended learning courses in the social science and humanities. Existing online instructional materials are typically produced at considerable expense and often with notable technical sophistication by museums...

The development of instructional materials for the On-line Distance Learning includes important aspects that must be considered in order to reach the students' learning expectations. Agreeing with Freire (2006, 2007) about the need of instructional material reflect the principles of dialogic education, this paper analyzes the dialogical characteristics of the most current edition of an on-line course for beginning tutors. Participants were 114 students grouped by five knowledge areas, according to the contents studied. The instructional materials were analyzed based on categories inspired by Paulo Freire’s concept of dialogue: affectivity, mediation, collaboration, autonomy and critical sense. Participants answered an investigative questionnaire related to their perception about the proximity of the on-line lessons to those characteristics. Results highlight the increased presence of dialogical elements in the training course, according to the participants’ point of view. The dialogicity was verified by aspects such as the use of courteous language, the fostering of collaborative learning, the encouragement to the development of student's autonomy and to the reflection on the students' practical and theoretical knowledge related to their major knowledge areas.; La elaboración de materiales didácticos para la Educación a Distancia On-line contempla aspectos relevantes que precisan ser considerados para que correspondan a las expectativas de aprendizaje de aquellos que buscan por esta modalidad educacional.
