In a global and technology society, new technologies often represent an exclusion factor for the elderly population, unlike what happens with the digital natives. By contrast, young people today are fluent in the language of the new digital technologies. Information Technologies and Communication (ICT) can be key elements to bring different generations and promote the strengthening of family ties and sharing experiences. In this context, TINA project (Information Technology for Grandparents and Grandchildren) whose main aim is to promote family cohesion between grandchildren and grandparents through the ICT including through the Internet. It presents a pilot experiment involving two groups of grandparents and grandchildren in the district of Bragança, Portugal, in 2010. Apart from living promoted by the ICT, participants were trained in basic ICT skills and participated in workshops on the use of communication/interaction technologies between grandparents and grandchildren. The project culminated with the completion of a contest based on webquests before the Grandparents day.

Entretanto...

In order to understand the differing perceptions of information needs and communication patterns of healthcare professionals as they relate to medical errors, we conducted a survey and 5 focus group sessions of inpatient physicians and nurses. Although nurses and physicians stated differing information needs, both groups expressed significant problems with obtaining patient, domain and institution-specific information in a timely manner. Identification of appropriate providers and establishing contact with those people was perceived as the most pressing communication need. All focus group participants felt that communication difficulties were common and could give examples in which such difficulties led to adverse events. Our studies suggest that information needs and communication difficulties are common and can lead to medical errors or near misses. Many of these problems may be amenable to information technology solutions.

(cont.) payoff IT investments. When the North American Aerospace Industry invests less than any other industry in the high risk investments, its foreign counterpart invests more than any other industry. The second major finding is that the governance mechanisms in place are similar in the two Aerospace Industry segments, contrary to the IT Portfolios. IT decisions are made usually by IT executives or business executives, based on the information provided by Chief level executives and at least one other business group. Finally, the third major finding is that the Aerospace Industry gets above average returns from IT by being good at IT Business Planning, Top Management involvement and User Satisfaction. However, a major effort needs to be placed on improving user satisfaction as it is not always properly managed and hinders returns from IT. The lack of extensive communication also hinders the returns from IT by not guarantying top management involvement and awareness of the IT governance mechanisms.; This thesis originated by a need for the Lean Aerospace Industry to study in the Aerospace Industry what seems to be a troublesome domain for many other industries: Information Technologies (IT). Beforehand, there were two ways to do so: study how aerospace companies implement major systems like Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) or Product Data Management (PDM). After a few short case studies...

Education in Brazil has undergone profound changes over the years. Since the enactment of the 1988 Federal Constitution and the Law of Guidelines and Bases of National Education 9394/96, it became evident a movement toward democratization, decentralization and modernization of public school. In this scenario, new expectations about the work of the school manager, starting with the challenge of transforming the administrative structure of classical force, in an educational model founded on the flexibility, efficiency and community participation, using means such as Information Technology and Communication (ICT). The current paradigms of the networked information society and have required competent and qualified professionals, equipped with technical and scientific knowledge capable of meeting the demands of social and economic policies in a globalized world. In Alagoas, a place that dominates low levels of educational development in the country, integration of technology resources within the school administration, is directly supported the prospect of significant changes in administrative practices and teaching in schools, in order to obtain better results in education students. However, there is a shortage in the scientific production of works that offer a reality that involves the diagnosis and management technologies in state schools. From this perception...

The note looks at the strategy of the Malawi Social Action Fund (MASAF) in linking the roles of information, education, and communication (IEC), designed through a process known as "systematic client consultations" which involved nongovernmental organizations, communities, government officials, as well as donor participants. Given the budget for IEC activities was high, a public awareness campaign was launched early on, and follow-on programs reinforced the benefits from MASAF subprojects: it involves a two-way communication, where facilitators work intensively with the communities on identifying IEC needs, and gaps. Significant impacts of this free flow of information have been better working relationships between stakeholders, and improved trust among the various key players. Among the lessons learned, the importance for an IEC campaign to precede project implementation is reinforced, so as to inform, and shape opinion on project features, provided such communication initiative is followed up with a second wave of clarification...

Information technology (IT) is crucial to the Navy's success. The Naval Postgraduate School must contribute to that success. One of my high priority goals for the School is to provide a model for the Navy in the use of information technology to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the entire organization. We have a long way to go to reach that goal, requiring us to manage some significant changes in the way we carry out our teaching, research, and administrative activities.

Guglielmo Marconi's trans-Atlantic wireless experiment in 1900 marked the beginning of a communication revolution that transformed the open space above the earth into channels of information flow. This dissertation grapples with the historical conditions that gave rise to such a transformation: the studies of radio-wave propagation and the treatments of radio interferences in early twentieth-century America and Western Europe. The part on propagation examines the debate between the surface diffraction theory and the atmospheric reflection theory for long waves, the development of the ionic refraction theory for short waves, the evidential quests for the existence of the ionosphere, and the studies of the geomagnetic effects on propagation. The part on interferences focuses on the engineering efforts toward the characterization of atmospheric noise and signal-intensity fluctuations, the policies of radio-channel allocation for fighting man-made interference, and the scientific research into electronic tube noise. By the mid-30s, the results from these endeavors had considerably improved the quality of radio communication. Characterizing Radio Channels builds a bridge between the history of science and the history of technology by inspecting an immaterial engineering entity--radio channels--whose control required significant scientific research. In the history of science...

This thesis uses an in-depth case study, with integrated data analysis, to compare and contrast globally distributed and co-located software teams within the IBM Corporation. Important differences in information sharing, collaboration and other behaviors were observed, along with a range of innovations in work operations. Technology and policy implications that draw on the benefits of each model are identified. The development of this thesis began with a seminar that was conducted at MIT to invite stakeholders in various areas of knowledge-based offshore outsourcing to discuss strategic, economic, organizational and technical issues raised in various environments. Large and small firms, various industries, and various business models were covered. The context provided by these stakeholders was used to design an in-depth case study at IBM, with the focus on a matched pair of software teams, which were studied for a period of one year. Both software teams were identical in aspects such as product scope, team size and domain; however, they differed in the key aspect that one team's members all work on the same hallway while the other team's members are geographically dispersed among multiple locations in the United States and India Quantitative technical data from the source control system of each team...

Empirical studies on information communication technologies (ICT) typically aggregate the "information" and "communication" components together. We show theoretically and empirically that this is problematic. Information and communication technologies have very different effects on the decisions taken at each level of an organization. Better information access pushes decisions down, as it allows for superior decentralized decision making without an undue cognitive burden on those lower in the hierarchy. Better communication pushes decisions up, as it allows employees to rely on those above them in the hierarchy to make decisions. Using an original dataset of firms from the U.S. and seven European countries we study the impact of ICT on worker autonomy, plant manager autonomy, and span of control. Consistent with the theory, we find that better information technologies (Enterprise Resource Planning, ERP, for plant managers and CAD/CAM for production workers) are associated with more autonomy and a wider span of control. By contrast, communication technologies (like data networks) decrease autonomy for both workers and plant managers. Treating technology as endogenous using instrumental variables (distance from the birthplace of ERP and heterogeneous telecommunication costs arising from different regulatory regimes) strengthens our results.

Empirical studies on information communication technologies (ICT) typically aggregate the “information” and “communication” components together. We show theoretically and empirically that these have very different effects on the empowerment of employees, and by extension on wage inequality. If managerial hierarchies are devices to acquire and transmit knowledge and information, technologies that reduce information costs enable agents to acquire more knowledge and ‘empower’ lower level agents. Conversely, technologies reducing communication costs substitute agent’s knowledge for directions from their managers, and lead to centralization. Using an original dataset of firms in the US and seven European countries we study the impact of ICT on worker autonomy, plant manager autonomy and spans of control. Consistently with the theory we find that better information technologies (Enterprise Resource Planning for plant managers and CAD/CAM for production workers) are associated with more autonomy and a wider span of control. By contrast, communication technologies (like data networks) decrease autonomy for both workers and plant managers. Our findings are robust to using exogenous variation in cross-country telecommunication costs arising from differential regulatory regimes.
