Nesse sentido...

In this paper I describe how a narrative approach to science communication may help audiences to more fully understand how science is relevant to their own lives and behaviors. The use of prescriptive scientific narrative can help to overcome challenges specific to scientific concepts, especially the need to reconsider long-held beliefs in the face of new empirical findings. Narrative can captivate the audience, driving anticipation for plot resolution, thus becoming a self-motivating vehicle for information delivery. This quality gives narrative considerable power to explain complex phenomena and causal processes, and to create and reinforce memory traces for better recall and application over time. Because of the inherent properties of narrative communication, their creators have a special responsibility to ensure even-handedness in selection and presentation of the scientific evidence. The recent transformation in communication and information technology has brought about new platforms for delivering content, particularly through interactivity, which can use structured self-tailoring to help individuals most efficiently get exactly the content that they need. As with all educational efforts, prescriptive scientific narratives must be evaluated systematically to determine whether they have the desired effects in improving understanding and changing behavior.

Thesis (Ph. D.)--University of Rochester. Dept. of Computer Science, 1981. Simultaneously published in the Technical Report series.; This thesis describes work done on debugging techniques and tools for communicating, loosely-coupled processes. Our work is intended to reduce the apparent complexity of large systems of communicating programs by regarding only the interprocess activities of such programs. The use of multiple, communicating processes as a model of computation allows for a very clean "cut" of what information is interesting for debugging and what is not. Our approach to debugging is to provide the user with information about how sets of these processes behave rather than what each program associated with each process does. Our tools provide various primitives for manipulating the interprocess activities of processes. We provide nothing to access the source code of any program. Our tools include a debugger program, a mechanism to fire and execute interprocess debugging demons and the ability to obtain transcripts of interprocess activities. The debugger provides commands for the user at a terminal for creating and manipulating individual interprocess events. Demons are an event-driven mechanism used to automatically monitor and modify interprocess events. Transcripts provide a record of interprocess events that can be replayed later. Our debugging techniques make use of these tools to provide individual process control...

The developing nations of the Pacific Islands face a number of issues as they move towards economic and environmental sustainability. The application of science and scientific knowledge can be valuable in addressing these problems, and moving the region towards a more stable future. However, science can have little impact unless it is effectively communicated to relevant audiences. ¶ Science communication is a relatively new and developing discipline. It is concerned with the context in which information is delivered, and the processes by which knowledge is accepted by different groups in society. ¶ I completed an introductory study of the attitudes of scientists based in the Pacific towards science communication. To study the processes by which scientists produce, and subsequently communicate, their science, I invited scientists within the region to complete a short online survey. The survey asked respondents their attitudes towards science communication, the outcomes of their science, and their opinions on the overall success and quality of science communication in the region. ¶ Results from the survey indicate a high regard for the importance of science communication, and a general consensus that the quality and reach of science communication in the Pacific is poor. Reasons suggested for the weakness of Pacific science communication include the lack of facilities and infrastructure across the Pacific for broadcasting information...

In this paper we describe preliminary results of a three-year project that examines the enculturation of doctoral students in life science programs in Taiwan, Japan, and Singapore. The purpose of the study is to examine how doctoral students in life science enrolled at universities in these three countries learn to become scientists and how information and communication technologies affect such processes. The project is in its first year, and we completed data collection in Taiwan during the summer of 2009. Data was collected using quantitative surveys, qualitative interviews, and time-diaries from advisors and doctoral students in life science programs in three Taiwanese universities. Preliminary results show that current students tend to have problems related to too great a reliance on computers, kits, and the Internet, and as a result, they fail to assimilate tacit knowledge that is invaluable in becoming the next generation of scientists.; This material is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. SBE 08-30137 and 08-30109.

This research discusses developing a FLy-Away-Kit (FLAK) to support the forming of Hastily Formed Networks (HFNs) in remote areas in support of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HA/DR) operations. The initial focus will be on the requirements, situation, area of operations and mission. Different definitions and perspectives emerge when an individual mentions HFNs, HA/DR and Complex Humanitarian Disasters (CHDs). It is the author's intention to define and describe both a HFN and a CHD, in order to justify the need for the FLAK. This process will also define the requirements for the FLAK as well as facilitate processes for ensuring those requirements are met. The personnel responding to the attacks of September 11, 2001 and the December 26, 2004 Southeast Asia Tsunami suffered Command and Control (C2) and information challenges. Even more challenges are being currently addressed by Homeland Defense, Maritime Domain Awareness, and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) abroad. From the top down, levels of administration are developing new plans, procedures, and organizations that will improve the security and communication processes of our nation. A global, broadband, rapidly deployable network node complete with Internet reachback...

Between 2006 and 2010 the World Bank sought to unmask the role of science, technology, and innovation in Ugandan industry. This report presents insights from this research based on case studies of six sectors: agriculture, health, energy, information and communication technology (ICT), transport, and logistics. Based on more than 80 interviews cutting across Uganda's small and medium-sized enterprises, universities, and government entities, the report's findings are intended to offer the government and its partners in industry increased clarity about how better to harness science, technology, and innovation to propel the economy. Enabling implementation of the recent Uganda national science, technology, and innovation policy is a parallel goal of the report. The policy articulates the government's intent to foster research and development that builds the human capital that Uganda requires for a knowledge-based economy. The case studies from which this report's recommendations are drawn depict a diverse range of experiences across industrial sectors in terms of generating...

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are changing the traditional scientific communication cycle and imposing meaningful transformations to the generation, production, circulation, dissemination, retrieval and use of information. They are influencing in different ways and levels the practices and results of the scientific activity, specially the intellectual outputs published in journal articles. This investigation analyses in what degree Brazilian researchers in genetics, working with genomics, have approved the new scientific communication standards introduced by ICTs. The results show these researchers have not yet approved the changes made by ICTs to the scientific communication cycle or, in other words, that during the period of this study electronic technologies did not altered significantly the formal processes of scientific communication in this area; As tecnologias de informação e comunicação (TICs) vêm transformando o ciclo da comunicação científica e impondo modificações expressivas no que concerne à geração, produção, circulação, disseminação, recuperação e consumo da informação.

Face to the new knowledge status, basically consisting of dispersonalization, credibility and fragmentation, decurring from the immense increase of information and knowlege currently existing, Information Science, having information as study object, contributes to scientific knowledge production. It aims at researching and developing processes, techniques, taking over information technologies and cognition and knowledge techniques for information to produce its effects: seeking for granting aprehension of sense or change in conscience status in meaning, i.e., the knowledge. Thus, science social character turns out concrete. By reflecting about Information Science fundaments, we intend to show that construction, communication and use operations which take place over its object of study materialize in information retrieval systems. In practice, such systems consist of corresponding a representation of the researcher’s necessity, or of a scientific community, with a document content representation, by means of a comparison function which assesses document pertinence and relevance, so that the information recovered may represent scientific state-of-the-art on a determined knowledge field.; Em face do novo estado do conhecimento, marcado basicamente pela sua despersonalização...

This paper aims to identify, in the literature, possible applications and semiotics contributions to the development of online reference services. In this study, which has a theoretical feature, it is possible to observe that in the area of Information Science, studies covering semiotics are limited to the processes of treatment and organization of information and knowledge, and just a few studies are about the semiotics applied to the process of communication and dissemination of that knowledge and there is even less research applied to the interaction between librarian and user in the virtual environment, such as online reference service.; O presente artigo visa identificar na literatura possíveis aplicações e contribuições da semiótica para o desenvolvimento de serviços de referência.

Above all universities teach and why, if they cooperate in the development, one of the things they do best is teach and transmit their teaching experiences. The e-learning, becoming more common because of its flexibility and adaptability, provides opportunities to exchange knowledge and advantages in organizing cooperation projects with developing countries. Around this mode of teaching have developed three cooperation projects between the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in Mozambique and Spanish Universities Distance Education and Carlos III de Madrid, whose results are reported here. The Library and Information Science is very attached to e-learning, to undertake technological literacy in the use of platforms and knowledge transfer mechanisms. But above all the finality with open educational resources, the production and use should be enhanced. So, the partner countries are not limited to being consumers. This study is founded on the assumption that journal articles represent the published science in a specific area of knowledge and that citations and co-citations give an indication of relationships established between researchers, thus allowing a knowledge network to be mapped. Based on the analysis of the articles and citations in the articles that refer to science communication published in the principal information science journals in Brazil, this study seeks to map and show the development of research in the field in the country. The results show that the most influential authors on the theme are academics from Science Communication, the most cited of whom are Meadows and Mueller. There is a high frequency of national authors among the most influential, and this shows the growth and consolidation of the field in Brazil. The theoretical influences in Science Communication in Brazil come from work within the field and also from the philosophy and history of science. This shows that Brazilian Science Communication has a corpus of significant work and research that are cited in the articles produced. The network is tightly connected, and there appear to be no isolated communities. However, there is a grouping of certain studies and authors around the most influential authors. Based on these results one can infer that the field of Science Communication in Brazil is developed in the main by educational institutions with study groups and/or post-graduate programmes with a research line in common with the subject at hand; it is connected with a group of researchers – authors of the scientific articles and also the cited authors – who work in universities and develop studies in the field...

This study aims to present the primary results of the project “The participation and social relationships of online opinion leaders on Twitter in Latin America and the Middle East” as part of the authors’ research. This study’s initial hypothesis is that despite the current rise in social networking, the communication flow model proposed by Klaus Jensen (2009) is only partially valid because these digital communication settings provide increased opportunities for the personalized exposure of messages from traditional (offline) opinion leaders rather than facilitating the emergence of new leadership at the social level. The results reveal that these users exhibit intensive Twitter use in both regions and a strong inclination to share information. However, we observed that most of their messages are personal and that fewer discuss the news. In comparison, users in Latin America achieve a greater impact on their networks than do users in the Middle East. The study concludes that the results support Kensen’s model but, as previous studies have confirmed, that new types of online opinion leaders are not actually being produced.; Este estudio tiene como objetivo presentar los resultados preliminares del proyecto "Participación social y las relaciones de opinión en línea en Twitter en América Latina y el Medio Oriente"...
